elcome once again to our guide to Camps and Clinics Mania. This is our sixth Camps and Clinics Resource Guide and it never ceases to amaze me at how it grows each year we do it. In reality, though, it could probably be twice as big. Maybe it will be next year. But my typing fingers ache at the thought. In the meantime, let’s talk about this version. In addition to 40-plus pages of camp listings featuring every sport from badminton to wrestling, we looked into the vastly expanding world of indoor sports complexes. And wow, what a world. The catalyst for our main story, which you’ll find on Page 24, is the planned construction of the Shadelands SportsPlex — a massive project headed by the Hall Equities Group of Walnut Creek that will renovate and add to the former Contra Costa Times Newspaper Building and become what will be the largest sports performance and training complex in the East Bay. Researching the project and taking the tour was a bit personal for me, especially as I walked through a gutted out newsroom where I used to work along with many friends and colleagues. By 2017, that newsroom will be a state-of-the-art soccer training facility. Based

on the adverse trajectories of the industries, there’s a very strong chance that the training facility will outlive newspapers. One thing is certain, despite the detractors who warn of overuse injuries and burnout, the youth and amateur sporting world is charging full speed ahead as it caters to year-round athletes. As you’ll see from a list we compiled for the story, the Shadelands project is just the newest venue to hit Northern California. It’s quite possible that many casual sports fans don’t even realize the amount of indoor sports facilities that have sprouted in the region over the past decade. The facilities aren’t small either. It’s this rapid expansion, and the thought that every one of those facilities — and the several more that will be listed in the online version — are home to an array of camps and clinics, that reinforces my thinking that future versions of this guide are only going to grow. And grow. And grow. In the meantime, I’m going to go put my fingers on ice. Because now it’s time we get back to our everyday gig of covering all of these tireless athletes and their non-stop endeavors. ✪

hen it comes to enjoying off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation, there’s no shortage of motorized options. The list includes dirt bikes, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs), four-wheel drive vehicles and snowmobiles. These capable vehicles provide fun for the whole family to explore new destinations and enjoy California’s spectacular landscape. Among the popular options continues to be ATVs. These four-wheel vehicles are among one of the most exciting and challenging recreational activities. And it’s obvious why. Just look …ATVs are awesome riding machines! And they are exciting and fun to ride! ATVs travel on low-pressure tires for insane traction, have a straddled seat and handlebars for steering its way through all manner of terrain from dirt and sand, to mud and snow. As with any motorized vehicle, riders should always operate ATVs safely and responsibly. ATV riders should always wear proper protective gear including a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet, goggles, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and over-the-ankle boots. Along with your protective gear, riders should follow the ATV Safety Institutes Golden Rules: 1. Stay away from paved roads except when crossing. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway. 2. Never ride under the influence! 3. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people. 4. Ride an ATV that’s right for your age. 5. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys. 6. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed. 7. Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course. Visit ATVsafety.org or call 800.887.2887. It is also important to act responsibly toward the environment. In order to minimize your impact, stay on the trails, avoid wet areas and try to leave the area better than you found it. By doing your part, you will help maintain the delicate balance between outdoor recreation and a healthy environment. Acting responsibly will help ensure long-term or sustainable OHV recreation. Now, with your protective gear and ATV safety certificate, come out and play! consideringCAMPS I want to improve my game this summer, so I definitely want to go to a camp — but there are a lot of choices, and I can’t afford to go to very many. How should I decide which one to pick? C.G., El Cerrito
T
here are a lot of variables involved in picking a camp, starting with whether your high school coach is running one. If so, you should definitely do that one — if only because high school coaches are brutally underpaid, and they pick up some extra income with these summer camps. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be with your coach during the summer and get a jump start on the season, but on the other hand, playing for the same coach all the time will severely limit your development, as will playing with the same players. For example, a point guard with a goal of playing in college needs to develop her scoring, but if she plays on a high school team that has other scorers and the coach just wants her to distribute, she won’t round out her offensive game. And if she plays for that same coach in club basketball, she will never develop the scoring punch she needs to maximize her potential. And the same applies defensively: Some coaches only play zone, and playing zone year-round will not help a player become a good defender. So aside from going to your own coach’s camp, if there is one, find a camp that will help you get better — and here are some things to look for.

1.
Day-long camps are basically day care. No one can play volleyball or soccer for eight hours, or any other sport for that matter. If a camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., most of the day will be spent killing time. Not only do the players get tired but so do the coaches.
2.
Find out the coach-player ratio. Usually, camps are broken up in groups. If there are 15 kids in each group and one coach, that’s not going to be nearly as effective as having seven kids and one coach. Studies have actually shown the maximum number of people even a strong leader can manage is around nine — more than that, and people get lost in the shuffle.
3.
Find out if the coaches get paid. If the coaches are high school players who are working for their high school coach, it’s probably not going to be a great camp. The more adult club and high school coaches working directly with the campers, the better. The quality of instruction is crucial, and just because a high school boy is a really good player doesn’t mean he can coach.
4.
Don’t go to a college camp expecting to go to that college as a result. The head coach will generally wave to the campers on day one, and then the rest of the time it’s a moneymaker for the assistants. The college players generally work the camp, but just because you’re a good player doesn’t mean you’re a good coach. If you’re good enough to play for the college, they won’t care if you came to their camp; and if you’re not good enough, it won’t matter either.
Of course, playing is better than not playing no matter what camp you choose. But since you’re spending someone’s hard-earned money, you want to get maximum value. A camp with high school or club coaches working with groups of 10 or less that runs no more than three hours a day is your best bet to get the most value — though supporting your own coach is a pretty good strategy too. ✪ To submit a question for Behind the Clipboard, email Clay Kallam at clayk@fullcourt.com

Using karate to train for baseball? Ain’t that a kick We compile close to 700 camp listings for this resource guide, and few of them catch us by surprise. But the joint training efforts of longtime karate coach, Tom Westernoff, and former collegiate standout and professional baseball player, Jonny Tucker, forced us into a double-take. Westernoff has been a martial arts instructor for three decades and served on the U.S. Olympic Committee for karate. He knows some things. And he wants to share some of those things with aspiring baseball players. “I talk about how karate and baseball are very similar,” Westernoff said. “So much is alike, including how we stand, footwork, the way our bodies move, especially hip-rotation and throwing motions, hand-eye-coordination to the target or ball, proper body posture, rotation of the arms from shoulders to the wrist, elbows kept in and how to explode from inside out.” Hoping to blend the two sports into a training system, Westernoff sought out Tucker, who offers private lessons as part of Tuck Academy. Tucker was a De La Salle graduate who went on to star at Florida University and played eight seasons of professional baseball in the Orioles and Nationals systems. Tucker signed on and the unique camp will be held at Bentley High in Lafayette later this summer. Do you want to know more? We don’t blame you. A massive sports training complex taking rise in Walnut Creek is the newest sign of the times in youth sports
O
utside it’s an unseasonably warm January weekday afternoon in Walnut Creek. But Mike Samuels is inside. And happy to be there. Samuels is showing off the brand new 40,000 square-foot Ultimate Fieldhouse. The East Bay’s newest sports facility is home to four full-size hardwood basketball courts, a basketball training center and more. About to begin its final week of a soft open before hitting full stride in February, the empty, quiet complex carried a serenity and peacefulness. An atmosphere like that will range from rare to never over the next year for the Ultimate Fieldhouse. Because in the Age of the Year-Round Athlete, there’s always a tournament to be held or an athlete who wants to put in extra training hours. That also means there’s always room for more facilities. And there has been no shortage of cities, developers and planning commissions racing to build them. The Ultimate Fieldhouse is a mere part of perhaps the ultimate example of this type of growth in Northern California and throughout the country. The facility is merely the first phase of a larger project that will convert the former Contra Costa Times Newspapers building into a multi-sport performance and training venue expected to exceed 200,000 square feet upon completion. In addition to the already completed Fieldhouse, the Shadelands SportsPlex by Hall Equities Group will feature state-of-the-art training centers for soccer (complete with a full-size indoor turf field and european training equipment currently unavailable anywhere else in the country), volleyball, baseball, aquatic sports, indoor cycling, dancing, gymnastics, martial arts and yoga. “We want this to be considered the hub of advanced sports training in this market,” said Brandon Farrell, Hall Equities Group’s senior vice president of business development. Each sport facility within Shadelands SportsPlex — which is slated to be completed in early 2017 — will be run independently by local clubs and organizations which have already established strong reputations in their sport. Farrell said some of the potential tenants who are al-

Walnut Creek’s Ultimate Fieldhouse, the first phase to Shadelands SportsPlex. ready in contract talks to join the Shadelands facility include Vibe Volleyball Club, Mike Murphy Baseball, American Swim Academy, Encore Gymnastics and Sparta Taekwondo. None of this project should appear out of place to those who have paid attention to the youth and amateur sports industry over the past few years. Massive indoor complexes and training facilities are dotting the map everywhere across the U.S.. The largest of them all is a 700,000 square-foot behemoth in Pennsylvania called Spooky Nook. And the same company behind Spooky Nook recently announced the planned development of a 500,000 square-foot complex in Ohio. So many of these facilities rise under the familiar mantra of, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ And so far, the sporting world continues to come in droves. “We’re probably booked out for (weekend) tournaments almost two years in advance,” said Jordan Boreman, co-founder of National Basketball Courts, a five-basketball-court facility in Livermore that will turn two-years old this summer. In a market research report released in March of 2015, SportsEvent Magazine estimated the economical impact of the sports event marketplace to have reached $8.92 billion in 2014. That was a near-nine percent rise from 2013. Also in the report, the magazine referenced research that suggested a typical family with two kids playing sports will spend close to 14 percent of their income on participation costs. The same report from March 2015 suggested there were no indications of the market slowing down, either. Among the factors it cited were the continued increase in facilities; the expansion and growth in popularity of sports outside of the traditional giants; a population spike that has led to close to five million more sports-aged youth now than a decade ago, and many parents buying into a national narrative that Follow us on Twitter & Instagram, and like us on Facebook!

Swimmers Shine In Sierra Short Course Championships Despite the wind and rain that occurred for the Sierra Nevada Swimming Short Course Junior Championships on March 4-6 there still was incredible competition from the 26 teams which participated. The action all took place at the Roseville Aquatics Complex and was hosted by California Capital Aquatics (CCA) and Placer Valley Tourism. Nearly 600 swimmers competing in the 8-under, 10-under, 11-12 and 13-14 age groups were undeterred by the weather conditions and swam their hearts out at this USA Swimming sanctioned event. “The meet was fabulous and we gave out 1,200 awards with first through tenth places in individual events and first, second and third awards for relays,” said Janet Vargas, CCA booster director. CCA took a respectable third-place team finish and had several stand-out swimmers including Bianca Ignacio, who was the leading point scorer in the 10-under age division and Korbin Vera who finished with the second most points in the 11-12 boys division. here aren’t many clubs or organizations that can promote participation in their programs as a potential pathway to Olympic competition. But when it comes to the the Santa Clara Aquamaids, splashing a headline like “Road to Rio” across an advertisement for its spring and summer camps isn’t as hyperbole-laced as one might think. The Aquamaids and their regional rival, the Walnut Creek Aquanuts, have had their footprints on the U.S. Olympic Team since it became a medal sport in 1984. In fact, matriarchs Gail Emery of the Aquanuts and Chris Carver of the Aquamaids, were key individuals in the United States’ push for the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games. Four Aquamaids — Becky Dyroen-Lancer, Jill Sudduth, Suzannah Bianco and Heather Simmons-Carrasco — came up through the club’s age-group program and culminated their careers by winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games in team routines choreographed and coached by Carver. Carver remains the lead coach and director of the Aquamaids. As for the most recent national teams, a glance at USA Synchro’s website during the fall of 2015 reveals that more than half of the 23-swimmer combined roster for the junior and senior national team was comprised of Aquamaids and Aquanuts, most of whom have attended area high schools. The list included Claire Barton, Katie Gu, Isabel Malcolmson, Rebecca Moody, Sarah Rodriguez, Karensa Tjoa, and Amanda Urke of the Aquamaids. And Karina Boyle, Gillian Brassil, Dana Drury, Joanna Langner and Sandra Ortellado of the Aquanuts. Malcolmson, a Saratoga High grad and former Aquamaid was a member of the Team USA 2015 Pan-American Games roster along with Barton, Rodriguez and Tjoa. Tjoa was born in Japan but grew up in San Jose and began swimming with the Aquamaids at age 11. She’s now a student at UC Berkeley. Aquanuts Ortellado and Miranda Koroleva — who represented the U.S. in a duet team at the 2012 London Games — were also on the squad. Both programs have spring and summer offerings. The Aquamaids have a series of camps in April, June and July while the Aquanuts offer various “Try It Days”. While attending these may not put one on the fast track to the Olympic podium, there’s probably a good chance of meeting and learning from a swimmer who’s already been there. ✪ — Chace Bryson Follow us on Twitter & Instagram, and like us on Facebook!
