After back-to-back losses dropped the Minutemen’s overall record to 4-6 on April 8, Concord bounced back in a big way by sweeping four games in two days to win the HASA Tournament in Antioch. Wynne contributed in a variety of ways, and had a big impact in each of the last three games. Her batting line for the four games was 6-for-11 with five runs scored, seven RBI and three stolen bases. She hit a home run in the 6-4 win over College Park-Pleasant Hill in the championship game. Wynne, who normally anchors the Minutemen infield at shortstop, also made relief pitching appearances in three of the games. She combined to pitch six innings in the tournament, allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out six. Concord returned to Diablo Valley Athletic League play on April 14 seeking its sixth league title in as many years.

DROPPED OUT: No. 16 St. Mary’s-Stockton and No. 20 Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa

BIGGEST MOVER: Los Gatos continues its rapid climb by reaching No. 3 this week. The Wildcats went 2-0 over the second week of April, picking up wins over previous No. 3 Valley Christian-San Jose and previous No. 8 Serra-San Mateo. Heritage-Brentwood and California-San Ramon both return to the rankings, the latter having won the St. Francis Elite 8 Tournament. The Grizzlies defeated No. 1 College Park in the championship game. Though it didn’t face either of the Falcons’ top two pitchers, Cal certainly deserves credit for the 4-0 win. TEAMS REMAINING FROM PRESEASON TOP 20: 12

With a few savvy senior leaders and standout freshman pitcher, Amador Valley appears to have skipped its rebuilding phase Following in the footsteps of greatness is never easy. The 2014 Amador Valley High softball team was nothing short of great. Heck, the Dons of Pleasanton were mythical national champions. For a high school softball team, it’s hard to be greater than that. With six seniors graduated, five of whom were starters, the Amador Valley team which began practice in February knew what it was up against. Then it set a goal to repeat as North Coast Section champions anyway. And the Dons could pull it off. With just more than half of their regular season in the books, the new-look Dons sported a 10-3 overall record that included a 4-1 showing at the Michelle Carew Tournament in Anaheim and a 2-1 start in the loaded East Bay Athletic League. “I think we’re getting better all the time,” Amador Valley coach Teresa Borchard said. “We’re a young team with some kinks to still work out, but I think we’ve gotten better every step of the way. ... They are determined and very focused.” That focus and determination is directly linked to the team’s senior leadership and captains Courtney Hennings, Katey Moore and Sammy Salustri. Hennings is a Cal State Monterey Bay-bound center fielder. An Amherst-bound second baseman, Salustri is the team’s leading hitter with 18 hits (.474 average) through 13 games. Moore is her partner on the right side of the infield. The first baseman may have the most unique collegiate athletic commitment, as she will wear the blue and white of EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. “They’re just fantastic leaders,” Borchard said. “They’ve seen the vision and what it takes to get there, and they have really passed on that vision.” Danielle Williams — despite being just a freshman in 2015 — probably had a pretty good idea of the vision as well. Williams has grown up watching Amador Valley softball games. Her sister, Krista, was a 2013 graduate who played for three Dons teams to reach the NCS Division I finals before accepting a scholarship to play at Northwestern University. So Danielle has been part of the Amador Valley extended family for some time. “I’ve probably known Danielle since she was about 4-years old,” said Borchard, whose daughter Nicole was a 2012 graduate and played on teams with Krista Williams growing up. “Many have a hard time

believing it, but I had never seen her pitch or play until tryouts this year.” Which means Borchard was treated to the mother of pleasant surprises. Williams has stepped into the pitching circle — replacing the program’s greatest and most-decorated pitcher to date, Cal-Hi Sports’ 2014 Ms. Softball State Player of the Year, Johanna Grauer — and hasn’t blinked. Through 12 starts, Williams holds a 10-2 record with a 1.12 ERA. “I still see Danielle as a little girl on her own off to the side, and now she towers over me,” Borchard says with a chuckle. “I’d heard she had a lot of potential, but I really had not seen her pitch. I’m glad I kind of left it open to evaluate her. I didn’t want to put any kind of pressure on her. Following Johanna was going to be pressure enough.” Grauer, now at UCLA, was the linchpin to the 2014 senior class that brought the Dons two NCS titles and the mythical national title bestowed by MaxPreps.com a year ago. Williams could very well be the centerpiece to another three- or four-year run. There are certainly other talented underclassmen in place to help make that happen. There are seven sophomores on the roster, three of which currently hold starting spots on the infield. Courtney Dinelli has assumed the catcher position, replacing four-year starter Victoria Molina, and has made a huge impact in the lineup. Hannah Myers replaces four-year starting shortstop Ashley Lotosyznski, and Jenyce Dutcher has grabbed the third base job after being called up from junior varsity earlier this year. Jillian Pluschkell and Ashley Balestreri are two juniors who have impacted the 10-3 start as well. The Dons first loss in EBAL play was a 1-0 defeat at Livermore on April 14. The Cowboys have been one of the most improved teams of the 2015 season and look to be part of a three-team race that will include Amador Valley and Foothill-Pleasanton. Outside of the EBAL, the NCS Division I field includes NorCal-ranked teams such as James Logan-Union City, Heritage-Brentwood and Castro Valley. “We know we have some things that we need to work on,” Borchard said. “But they work very hard and they’re open to coaching. The goal they have is to get to NCS and win it. I told them we don’t have to win every game along the way to accomplish that. We just have to continue to improve and stay consistent.” ✪ — Chace Bryson, Editor

BIGGEST MOVERS: Not much movement inside the Top 10, but Elk Grove had a nice Easter Break. The Thundering Herd went 5-0 on the week, which included winning the Platinum Bracket at the Nor Cal Classic Tournament in Tracy. The four tournament wins extended Elk Grove’s winning streak to 11 games dating back to a 5-4 loss to Benicia on March 13. Only one debut this week as River City breaks in at No. 17. The Raiders’ only losses have been to Rocklin (6-5) and current No. 4 Pioneer-Woodland (4-0). TEAMS REMAINING FROM PRESEASON TOP 20: 11

The new Livermore-based baseball tournament concluded April 9 when co-host Granada-Livermore defeated Freedom-Oakley 5-1 in the championship game. HEALTH WATCH: DR. NIRAV K. PANDYA

Young athletes often look forward to their growth spurt, but it’s also a time to be cautious With summer right around the corner, many young athletes wonder, “Is this the summer that I am going to grow six inches?” Although growth is an exciting prospect for the athlete, there are several key points that directly relate to sports performance and risk of injury. First, our bones grow from an area called the physis (a.k.a. growth plate). These are areas of cartilage which eventually fuse with the rest of the bone when an individual is done growing. On average, growth ends around 14 years of age for girls and 16 for boys. The majority of leg growth occurs at the end of the thigh bone (9 millimeters/year) and top of the shin bone (6 mm/year). Due to the fact that the physis is made of cartilage, these areas are weaker than the rest of the bone, and can be susceptible to injury. For example, poor throwing mechanics and over-use can cause injuries to the growth plates of the elbow and shoulder (Little Leaguer’s disease) as these are weaker areas in the arm. In addition, if you are unlucky enough to break your bone while you are still growing, the physis can be injured. This can lead to larger growth problems down the road based on a patient’s age and amount of growth remaining. Of particular concern for the athlete is that during periods of rapid growth, the muscles can’t keep up with the expanding length of the bone. This leads to muscle tightness and inflexibility. These tight muscles can cause chronic pain around the growth plates of the heel (Sever’s disease) and the knee (Osgood-Schlatter). As a result, although growth may be an exciting time, young athletes should be aware that they need to be particularly vigilant about stretching, practicing good mechanics, and resting when their bodies are sore. The physis has amazing potential to turn us into mature adults, but also can be a source of pain and frustration for many athletes. ✪

In its first season under a new coach, Lincoln-Stockton girls soccer has romped through the newly super-competitive TCAL After coaching at Stagg High in Stockton for eight years, Chris Viri was given an unknown commodity when he took over the Lincoln-Stockton program this season. “I knew this team had some potential when I got the position. I worked with some of these girls in club soccer,” Viri said of taking on the job of rebuilding the Trojans program. “This wasn’t a failing program, but they had never really gone deep into the playoffs. “At the beginning of the season, I figured we could be a playoff team, but the unknown was how deep this new (Tri-City Athletic League) would be.” This year’s TCAL, after some reshuffling of schools, is comprised of six schools which each had their girls soccer teams reach the postseason a year ago: Lincoln, Tracy, St. Mary’s-Stockton, Lodi, Tokay and West-Tracy. “These schools are regulars in the section playoffs,” explained Viri. Through April 13, Viri had his Lincoln team on top of the TCAL league with a 17-1-2 overall record and an 8-1-1 mark in league play. In the preseason, Viri quickly learned that he had something special. “It was the surprising play of my freshmen and sophomores during preseason that made me realize that we’d have a shot at the division,” he said. One of those freshmen is Samantha Rascon, who along with senior Amber Deanda, is tied at the top of the TCAL with 23 goals scored. Their matching goal totals are 12 better than the third-leading goal scorer in the league. Rascon also leads the league in assists with 20, giving her 66 total points. Her 20 assists is tops in the nation for the spring girls soccer season. Her 66 points currently places her fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section. What separates Rascon from the rest of the league, according to Viri, is the ability to strike the ball with both feet. “Sammie does it better than anyone. She has power in both feet,” Viri said. “She is just so blessed with the finishing skill and she makes the game look so easy.” Viri also has the luxury of having two stellar goalkeepers. Through mid-April, junior keeper Xyla Guerrero leads the league in goals against average at 0.6, and freshman Devany Wolfe is third in the league with 1.2 goals allowed per game. “Our freshman Wolfe really pushes Xyla in net,” Viri said. “They both are tremendous, and it is nice to have that luxury.” Viri calls senior defensive stalwart Aubrey Kimball the “glue” of the Trojans’ defense, and refers to senior Adele Looper as the “beast.” Looper typically marks the opposing team’s star forward. Viri points to her ability to “shut down the team’s scorer, physically and mentally” as the key to containing the potent offenses that Lincoln has faced. As for Kimbal, Viri says “there is nobody smarter or more calm when she does her work.” Schools with top programs in whatever sport it may be, take time to develop. Often schools will excel in a particular year when the talent all lines up, but to keep it consistent is often a challenge. That is especially true with public schools. Viri acknowledges that it does take the first “special” year to get a program going. It also helps if you have success against the team who is projected as the team to beat. That team to beat, year after year, is cross-town rival St. Mary’s. Lincoln has twice defeated St. Mary’s this season — 3-2 in a tournament and 3-1 in the teams’ latest TCAL matchup on April 9 — and played the Rams to a 0-0 draw in a March 25 TCAL tilt. Lincoln’s only hiccup through April 13 was a 3-2 loss to Lodi. “To be a part of this new TCAL league is a good thing,” said Viri. “Any team can beat another. This league will provide many years of some entertaining games and great playoff preparation for the teams that make it through.” Making it through the TCAL and making it far into the postseason are goals for the “unknown” commodity of a program that Viri took over. Now, the Trojans are known as a team that has the talent and camaraderie to capture its first ever section championship. ✪ — Darrin Wissner, contributor

From Disney to the gridiron

Sometimes going to a camp or clinic helps us think about our sport in different ways. For Artie Gigantino, a football coach who has worked at every level, including the NFL, inspiration was found in the unlikeliest of sources — Walt Disney. “As a young football coach, I always had a great interest and curiosity in finding easier and clearer ways in which to communicate information to my players,” said the coach who now does individual player evaluations and helps families through the recruiting process. But one night while watching a documentary on Walt Disney, he became intrigued at the Disneyland creator’s use of storyboarding in developing his famous animated shorts and films. The light bulb went on. “I took Mr. Disney’s idea and applied it to football,” he said. “I started to draw defenses on a dry erase board in my office, and left them up there for a month or two at a time. By simply seeing it each day, ideas and concepts of how to utilize this defense alignment would come to me. What type of blitzes to run? What type of stunts to run? To this day, every office I have ever worked in has walls of dry erase board in it in which ideas are storyboarded.” When you’re at your camp or clinic this summer, take it all in. PIL A TE S

More than you think D

id you know that Pilates is incredible cross training for any sport? Perhaps you always thought that Pilates is “just for girls”? Actually, Joseph Pilates was a professional boxer. Beginning in early 19th century Germany, Mr. Pilates extensively trained boxers, wrestlers, gymnasts, circus artists, dancers, actors and police officers. In our era, Joseph & Clara Pilates’ work has been embraced by professional athletes of every sport. Standout NFL receiver Antonio Brown, tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, Tiger Woods, John England, the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic and many others all use Pilates as an integral part of their training. Pilates is a method designed to strengthen the core, while increasing whole body strength, flexibility, balance and healthy body mechanics. Many commonly used training regimens utilize high repetitions with heavy weights, followed by stretching (hopefully) to prevent the tightening of muscles. In contrast, Pilates emphasizes short reps focused on perfect form and the “eccentric” contraction of the muscle. (An eccentric contraction occurs when the powerful work of a muscle happens while it is lengthening rather than shortening.) Flexibility is interwoven with balance in each exercise, and an “inside-out” approach to strengthening is used — working the deep muscles that stabilize the joints before addressing the superficial muscles. The result is a fantastic workout, newly found body awareness and a re-training of faulty body mechanics. And solid, healthy body mechanics create a smart and efficient quality of movement that allows athletes to harness untapped power to throw the ball farther, run faster and jump higher — all while preventing injury. Athletics require dynamic, multi-dimensional movement of our bodies. In sports, movements are complicated and two-dimensional. Tackling and hitting require rotation and torquing in any given direction with force. This means that two-dimensional bicep or hamstring curls or crunches don’t translate well into the complex movements needed for the power and agility of elite athletics. Specialized spring-resistant Pilates machines (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair) enable athletes to train dynamically, target the body’s deep muscles that stabilize the joints and build strength in multiple planes and alignments. This conditioning seamlessly translates to success at throwing a ball effectively, swinging a bat, dismounting off of an apparatus, sprinting towards home or defying injury from a hard hit. Strength and flexibility also determine speed. You may have a very fast gait, but if your muscles are tightly bound, your stride will be shorter than its potential. And tight muscles often lead to injury which can haunt an athlete for an entire career or force early retirement. Pilates can help prevent injuries, and can improve on strength, flexibility and speed after returning from injury. And Pilates training is a phenomenal resource for plyometrics. While decreasing the effects of gravity during jumping drills, athletes are able to re-pattern inefficient body mechanics that are slowing them down and dampening their power. Pilates takes an athlete’s already-dynamic body and mind and transforms it from the inside out. What happens when you increase deep core strength, flexibility, balance and new movement possibilities? An athlete’s game goes through the roof. ✪ — Tonya Maries Amos
