El Dorado-Placerville, Baseball, Senior The Cougars’ slugger closed out an amazing regular season with a four-game stretch that produced four home runs and 10 RBI to increase his Sac-Joaquin Section-leading totals to 14 homers and 57 RBI. In helping El Dorado to a 22-5 overall record, a Sierra Valley Conference championship and the No. 1 seed in the Division IV playoffs, Smith batted .598 (fourth-best in the section) with a sectionleading 55 hits and 15 doubles. His 1.217 slugging percentage is second best in the section, and he has nine more homers than anybody else in the section. Committed to bring his bat to Sacramento State in the fall, he had a hit in 26 of the Cougars’ 27 regular season games and entered the postseason with a 19-game hitting streak. His prodigious offensive numbers also include 21 multi-hit games and at least one RBI in 24 games. El Dorado won the league title with a 12-3 record, and ended the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. MATT THE BAT: “I have been seeing the ball good all season. I have been working out a lot with a personal trainer and take more than a thousand swings per week.” Like us on Facebook

PROTECTION: “I don’t worry about guys pitching around me because I know that the batters behind me will pick me up. I look for a good pitch early in the count, but I don’t have a problem taking a walk to set up the 4, 5 and 6 hitters.” STREAKING INTO THE POSTSEASON: “The win streak helps to give us confidence, but our mind-set for the playoffs is to play every game like it’s our last. We know that if we play our game, then we can beat anyone.”
Nevada Schultz carries himself with a quiet grace that is reflected in his diving—fluid precision in sport and life that rarely leaves more than a gentle ripple. The humble junior from McClatchy High School is determined to improve upon the Sac-Joaquin Section Diving Championship he earned as a sophomore, and does so with workmanlike determination. “He is a beautiful diver to watch,” said McClatchy diving coach Dee Robbins, who has worked with Schultz since he came to the school three years ago. “He is talented, yet very determined and works very hard to get better. He has not reached his full potential yet.” That potential could be realized through year-round competition and a training regimen of two hours per day, five days a week that Schultz shrugs off as “not that strenuous.” The work is clearly being put in to build on a love for the sport that began only four years ago when he began diving in middle school. Schultz had enjoyed watching diving in the Olympics—American legend Greg Louganis is a favorite—and got his start after his mother found an opportunity for her son to try diving. Growing up in team sports like soccer and baseball, Schultz preferred the freedom and accountability of individual sports such as snowboarding and skateboarding, as well as the acrobatics of the more extreme sports. He combined the appeal of an acrobatic sport with the routine of trying flips on a trampoline to literally dive into his new sporting passion. “The individual aspect appealed to me,” Schultz said. “All of my focus was on me and I knew that I had no one else to blame but myself if I did not succeed.” He found success quickly with a fourth-place Sac-Joaquin Section Finals finish as a freshman. Building on that, he won the SJS title in 2014 after consistent training at school and in the Junior Olympic program. Schultz followed his 2014 title with a runner-up finish May 8-9 that qualified him for the inaugural CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships, which will take place May 22-23 at the Clovis Olympic

schultz files Accolades: The McClatchy junior won the 2014 Sac-Joaquin Section Diving Finals as a sophomore and was runner-up at the SJS Diving Finals this year. He is a two-time High School All-America and qualified for the USA Diving 2015 Zone E Finals in Beaverton, Ore. Favorite Diver/Idol: Greg Louganis: “He is the best diver I have watched. He is very graceful in the air and I appreciate the way that he dives.” College Try: Schultz is looking at colleges where he can compete on a quality diving team. His search is currently wide open with the school’s diving team “really important.” Favorite dive: Reverse 2 ½ in tuck position Swim Complex. Each of the last two years, Schultz’s performance at the section finals qualified him as a High School All-American. This year, though, qualifying for the state meet was an added bonus. Robbins sees state as an excellent opportunity for Schultz. The coach has come to know and appreciate the hard work and humble demeanor of his star diver. But, as a former college All-American and Masters National Champion, Robbins sees a great diver and performer that rises to the occasion and level of competition. “He is a great competitor, practices well, and works very hard, but he shines in competition,” Robbins said. “You can’t teach that. It’s showtime and the competitiveness comes out for everyone to see.” Because Robbins only has Schultz for a couple of months during his yearround training, he knows that the pair must focus on refinement of technique. Points of emphasis for the pair include boardwork for optimum height and position to execute more difficult dives, and Robbins believes that his student’s ceiling is higher than he can jump. “He is continually getting cleaner,” Robbins said. “In the air, his form is crisp and defined. He has such fluidity, grace, and beauty. “If he has a real good day and peaks at the state meet, then he has a chance to do real well. He is right up there with the best divers in California.” Schultz is excited about the chance to compete against the state’s best high school divers as it will help with his preparation for qualifying for the USA Diving Zone E Finals in June. He qualified for the Zone Meet with a solid finish at the regional level, and his ultimate goal is to reach the USA Diving National Championships in Orlando, Fla., in the late summer. He qualified for nationals as a freshman, but did not make the trip because he was “not as committed to diving” at the time. But his commitment and talent continue to rise to where he could compete collegiately as well as nationally with USA Diving. The sky’s the limit. But don’t expect a huge splash from the humble Schultz if he reaches his full potential. ✪
knee pain: hunter greene, m.d.
Osgood-Schlatter disease isn’t as menacing as it sounds, and while painful, should only be temporary f knee pain in growing adolescents. Though its name sounds ominous, Osgood-Schlatter is not actually a disease, but an overuse injury. It can be quite painful, but usually resolves itself within 12-24 months. Osgood-Schlatter disease is an inflammation of the bone, cartilage and/or tendon at the top of the shinbone (tibia), where the tendon from the kneecap (patella) attaches. OSD usually strikes active adolescents experiencing growth spurts during puberty. The disease occurs most often in children who participate in sports that involve running, jumping and swift changes in direction, such as soccer, basketball, figure skating and ballet. During activity, your child’s thigh muscles (quadriceps) pull on the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shinbone. The repeated stress can cause the tendon to pull away from the shinbone a bit, resulting in the pain and swelling associated with Osgood-Schlatter disease. In some cases, your child’s body may try to close that gap with new bone growth, which can result in a bony lump at that spot. While there is no cure for Osgood-Schlatter, the key to pain relief is rest. In mild cases your child’s doctor may advise him or her to limit activities that cause the pain. They may be able to continue their sports as long as the pain remains mild. When symptoms flare up, a short break from sports may be necessary. Over-the-counter pain relievers and applying ice to the knee may be helpful. A physical therapist may prescribe exercises to stretch the thigh’s quadriceps and hamstring muscles, which may reduce tension on the spot where the kneecap’s tendon attaches to the shinbone. Strengthening exercises for the quadriceps can help stabilize the knee joint. Most symptoms will disappear when a child completes the adolescent growth spurt, usually around age 14 for girls and age 16 for boys. ✪ Hunter Greene, M.D., is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with Summit Orthopedic Specialists in Carmichael. Gusts of
confidence When it comes to boys golf in the North Coast Section, there’s no substitute for the East Bay Athletic League. That fact was never more evident than at the NCS Tournament of Champions on May 11. Battling nasty wind conditions at Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro, the EBAL dominated the leaderboard. The league swept the top three team spots as De La Salle-Concord edged Foothill-Pleasanton by six strokes, 384-390, and Monte Vista-Danville rounded out third place with a 399. All three teams qualify for the CIF/NCGA NorCal Championships at Corral De Tierra Country Club near Salinas on May 18. Foothill is the defending NorCal champion after edging Central Catholic-Modesto by two strokes a year ago. The four individual NorCal qualifiers were also led by an EBAL talent in Amador Valley-Pleasanton’s Noah Woolsey. From Disney to the gridiron
Sometimes going to a camp or clinic helps us think about our sport in different ways. For Artie Gigantino, a football coach who has worked at every level, including the NFL, inspiration was found in the unlikeliest of sources — Walt Disney. “As a young football coach, I always had a great interest and curiosity in finding easier and clearer ways in which to communicate information to my players,” said the coach who now does individual player evaluations and helps families through the recruiting process. But one night while watching a documentary on Walt Disney, he became intrigued at the Disneyland creator’s use of storyboarding in developing his famous animated shorts and films. The light bulb went on. “I took Mr. Disney’s idea and applied it to football,” he said. “I started to draw defenses on a dry erase board in my office, and left them up there for a month or two at a time. By simply seeing it each day, ideas and concepts of how to utilize this defense alignment would come to me. What type of blitzes to run? What type of stunts to run? To this day, every office I have ever worked in has walls of dry erase board in it in which ideas are storyboarded.” When you’re at your camp or clinic this summer, take it all in. The secret that could unlock your potential may be lurking as something totally unexpected. ✪ The camp is designed to condition players mentally and physically to be successful playing competitive baseball. P ILATES
More than you think D
id you know that Pilates is incredible cross training for any sport? Perhaps you always thought that Pilates is “just for girls”? Actually, Joseph Pilates was a professional boxer. Beginning in early 19th century Germany, Mr. Pilates extensively trained boxers, wrestlers, gymnasts, circus artists, dancers, actors and police officers. In our era, Joseph & Clara Pilates’ work has been embraced by professional athletes of every sport. Standout NFL receiver Antonio Brown, tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, Tiger Woods, John England, the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic and many others all use Pilates as an integral part of their training. Pilates is a method designed to strengthen the core, while increasing whole body strength, flexibility, balance and healthy body mechanics. Many commonly used training regimens utilize high repetitions with heavy weights, followed by stretching (hopefully) to prevent the tightening of muscles. In contrast, Pilates emphasizes short reps focused on perfect form and the “eccentric” contraction of the muscle. (An eccentric contraction occurs when the powerful work of a muscle happens while it is lengthening rather than shortening.) Flexibility is interwoven with balance in each exercise, and an “inside-out” approach to strengthening is used — working the deep muscles that stabilize the joints before addressing the superficial muscles. The result is a fantastic workout, newly found body awareness and a re-training of faulty body mechanics. And solid, healthy body mechanics create a smart and efficient quality of movement that allows athletes to harness untapped power to throw the ball farther, run faster and jump higher — all while preventing injury. Athletics require dynamic, multi-dimensional movement of our bodies. In sports, movements are complicated and two-dimensional. Tackling and hitting require rotation and torquing in any given direction with force. This means that two-dimensional bicep or hamstring curls or crunches don’t translate well into the complex movements needed for the power and agility of elite athletics. Specialized spring-resistant Pilates machines (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair) enable athletes to train dynamically, target the body’s deep muscles that stabilize the joints and build strength in multiple planes and alignments. This conditioning seamlessly translates to success at throwing a ball effectively, swinging a bat, dismounting off of an apparatus, sprinting towards home or defying injury from a hard hit. Strength and flexibility also determine speed. You may have a very fast gait, but if your muscles are tightly bound, your stride will be shorter than its potential. And tight muscles often lead to injury which can haunt an athlete for an entire career or force early retirement. Pilates can help prevent injuries, and can improve on strength, flexibility and speed after returning from injury. And Pilates training is a phenomenal resource for plyometrics. While decreasing the effects of gravity during jumping drills, athletes are able to re-pattern inefficient body mechanics that are slowing them down and dampening their power. Pilates takes an athlete’s already-dynamic body and mind and transforms it from the inside out. What happens when you increase deep core strength, flexibility, balance and new movement possibilities? An athlete’s game goes through the roof. ✪ — Tonya Maries Amos
