thumbs up/ thumbs down Well, the Warriors. Obviously. Turns out they were really that good. And a sidenote: The odds on a future Draymond Greencentered reality show are at an all-time high. Sports Illustrated’s Andy Benoit said stupid things about women’s sports (that they’re all unwatchable). Let’s let Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler take it from here. CLICK HERE

count 'em Number of years it had been since Cal-Hi Sports had named a North Coast Section baseball team its State Team of the Year prior to bestowing the honor on the 2015 College Park baseball team. The last NCS team to accomplish the feat was El Cerrito in 1983.
say what? “You have to give up a lot in high school. You have to tell yourself you want to make this team — that it’s more important than hanging out with friends or going to dances. Everything is worth it.” Jackie Gilbert, recent Amador Valley-Pleasanton graduate, speaking to Lacrosse Magazine about her motivation to make the U-19 National Team which competes at the World Championships in Scotland this July.
GETinthegame Camps & skills sessions are fine, but you can learn just as much playing pick-up hoops
I’m a basketball player, and I want to get better this summer. Should I work on my skills with a trainer one-on-one, or go to a bunch of camps? Or should I try to get stronger and get in better shape? G.O., Rocklin How about “none of the above”? How about playing pick-up with older guys at the park or in a gym? How about getting better by playing the game as a whole rather than focusing on parts of the game? OK, that’s an exaggeration. Young players need to work on skills, so smoothing out shooting form, getting more comfortable with the ball, working on rebounding fundamentals — all of these are worthy pursuits. But too often players, especially girls, spend all their time with the pieces of the game and not nearly enough time putting the pieces together. So that’s one reason why pick-up basketball is so important; it forces players to be more than the sum of their skills. They have to apply those skills in game situations, and oh by the way, they have to do so and try to win at the same time. (One of the great values of pick-up basketball, in most locales, is that if you don’t win, you have to sit down and watch — which is a Darwinian way of figuring out whether what you’re doing is really working. If you keep losing, think about why rather than complaining about your teammates.) And why old guys? After all, “old man” basketball is derided on TV and pretty much everywhere else, so why should young players seek that kind of game out? The reason is simple: Old guys can’t rely on being better athletes than whoever it is they’re playing, so they have to be as smart as possible on the court. Or they’ll lose, and they’ll sit down. Unless you’re LeBron James, the day will come when you’re playing against a better athlete, and you better have a plan. Older players consistently frustrate high school players in pickup games, and it’s not because they can jump higher or run faster. It’s because they are more efficient and get the most out of whatever talent they have left. That kind of efficiency is equally effective in high school because it leads directly to winning — and coaches are going to notice which players help them win. Of course, it’s easy to get away without defending in a pick-up game, but if you’re serious, you can work on defending there too, and that’s something that you don’t get much of in one-on-one training or camps. Defense is a fluid, reactive part of the game, and it can’t be isolated (like shooting form, say) from actually playing. In a pick-up game, a serious player can get better by always volunteering to guard the other team’s best player, and working on simple things like being in help position and screening out every time for rebounds. That helps those traits become habits rather than something that has to be thought about. There’s a lot to learn in pick-up basketball, and a lot to learn from older guys who don’t run as fast as you or jump as high. But if they keep playing and you keep sitting, there are reasons — and the sooner you figure out what those reasons are, the better off you are. ✪
Welcome to the third annual Bay Area 75 — SportStars’ countdown of the top 75 Bay Area athletes from the 2014-15 school year. This is the first of two unveilings of our prestigious list, featuring athletes ranked No. 75-51. This year’s list includes at least one athlete from each county and has 14 different sports represented. All sports fans know rankings are an opinion, and certainly subjective. They also spark debate and conversation, which is why we love them. As you look through this list, we encourage you to share your thoughts. Who do you think winds up No. 1? Use hashtag #BA75! —Chace Bryson, Editor

Do you fear
success
Believe it or not, many athletes may not reach their goals because they fear the pressure success might create
As athletes, we dream of one day cashing in on all the blood, sweat and tears for the glory of our sport. We imagine winning the championship, earning the scholarship and even winning the gold medal. Ironically, many of us also fear success. Surprisingly, at times we actively sabotage our chances of success. Why on earth would we purposely diminish our chances for the glory we dream of? Intuitively we fear that a fully executed commitment also sets us up for a complete failure. A failure that comes without excuses and may bring truths that we don’t want to face. Success can also bring the crushing weight of pressure. Pressure to continue to be successful. Pressure to meet the expectations that your success established. It can be a lot to live up to. What does fear of success look like? ›› Not completing your workouts for the week. ›› Not eating proper nutrition/poor timing with eating ›› Not getting proper sleep and recovery needed to manage your training load. ›› Getting frustrated and deciding that you just can’t get better, stronger or faster. ›› Spending a lot of time thinking in the future about “what ifs” (“What if I win the sprint and now I’m expected to always win the sprint? What if I win the tournament and now everyone is watching me and expecting me to win?”) Fear of success is subtle and often hard to detect, but it deviously undermines our best performance. Here are some tips to help minimize and overcome fear of success. ›› Set up a weekly goal plan with everything you need to do in order to be prepared for game day. Update and execute this plan every week with 100 percent commitment. ›› Share your goal plan with your coaches, trainers and/or your sport psychology professional to review for additional accountability. ›› Manage your self-talk to be sure you are staying focused and not giving yourself permission to let down. ›› Manage emotions that can lead to irrational behavior which may make us feel “justified” in not staying committed. ›› Discuss your fears out loud with your coach, trainer or sport psychology professional to give them a voice and to help get some strategies to overcome. I often say, it’s your mental game that controls your physical game. Being mentally strong allows you to prepare and perform your best. Performing your best is nothing to be afraid of. ✪ Erika Carlson is a certified mental trainer and owner of Excellence in Sports Performance in Pleasanton.w

Walnut Creek is the home to a very unique summer camp where the campers learn to take care of the athletes
welcome to
p m a C t e V Attending summer camp is a beloved tradition that dates back more than 150 years in the United States. Camp allows young people to meet new people — often from different states and countries. Camp allows young people to mix up their daily routines, enjoy new experiences, challenge themselves, learn new skills, feed their passions and have fun. One such camp that does all that and more for animal lovers and aspiring veterinarians is Bay Area Equine Vet Camp (BAE Vet Camp), happening Aug. 1–7, 2015. Based in Walnut Creek, at the Bay Area Equestrian Club Stables at the foot of Mount Diablo, 2015 BAE Vet Camp is an intensive seven-day, equinefocused summer camp designed and geared for mature, highly motivated middle school and high school students and college undergrads. Now in its second year, BAE Vet Camp is the only camp of its kind in Northern California, and a welcomed camp option for horse lovers who are interested in the science of veterinary medicine. BAE Vet Camp was developed by Shanna Gage Lai and her daughter Taylor, 13, both accomplished equestrians who want to offer students an alternative to the more traditional equestrian camp — one focused on equine medicine, rather than horseback riding. Designed in collaboration with noted veterinarian, specialist surgeon, author, and camp mentor Jamie Textor, DVM, PhD, Vet Camp offers students up-close and personal, hands-on experiences in the real world of veterinary medicine through workshops, facility tours, mentor presentations, guest speakers, independent and team projects. “It’s been a lot of fun to get back into teaching and being involved with these very engaged, very passionate students,” says Textor. “It’s amazing to watch them light up as they experience not only horses, but science and veterinary medicine in general.” An added plus, notes Lai, is that students can
use their hours spent at BAE Vet Camp on their academic résumé and college applications for veterinary school, which require practical and clinical experience working with a veterinarian. “We take a collaborative and experiential approach to learning,” says Lai, describing Vet Camp as a full educational curriculum with all the fun and camaraderie of the summer camp experience. “We’ve incorporated STEM [science, technology, engineering & math] into the week, as well as art, writing, music, and yoga and Pilates for equestrians.” Students will learn about horse breeding and racing; meet rescue horses and learn about their rehabilitation; research and debate controversial veterinary issues; and try their hand at driving a pony cart. “This year we’ve planned some extra fun activities—I’m personally very excited,” says Lai. “Camp mentors Kevin and Martina Keith are bringing several exotic animals —including monkeys, baboons, and a pot bellied pig — to demonstrate how to interact and handle exotics. And, we’ve recently acquired a beautiful purebred Arabian mare, a five-time National Champion. Campers will meet her and her trainer Tamera Collins and learn about the veteri›› WHEN: August 1–7, 2015; 8am–5pm nary and training needs of a highly competitive, top equine athlete.” ›› WHERE: Bay Area Equestrian Club Campers will be on the go, traveling as a Stables, Walnut Creek, CA group via chartered bus, to UC Davis, School ›› COST: Commuter $2,000; Residenof Veterinary Medicine; Stanford University tial $3,000. Textor will spend several days with the students, between the Bay Area Equestrian Club Stables and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, the top ranked U.S. veterinary school. At UC Davis, Textor will offer an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital and discuss how young people can work with horses and what it takes to become a veterinarian. Students will visit the Clinical Pathology Department and the Materials Testing Laboratory of Susan Stover, DVM, PhD, where limbs, horseshoes, and track surfaces are mechanically tested for physical properties — demonstrating the interface between veterinary medicine and biomedical engineering. Students will also learn about equine diagnostic imaging, oncology, dermatology and regenerative medicine using stem cells. Kyle Kline, a student at Cal, majoring in molecular environmental biology with a minor in nutrition and toxicology, plans to apply to veterinary school and attended Vet Camp last summer. “During camp, I had the opportunity to learn about different fields of technology within veterinary medicine that I didn’t even know were available.” said Kline, who plans to specialize in working with horses, particularly in the field of orthopedics for equine athletes. In other workshops, students will work with horse breeder Jill Sherman, professional cowboy and champion saddle bronc specialist Nick LaDuke, horse trainer Kim Bredehoft, equine chiropractor Tracy Rainwaters, hoof care and rehabilitation expert Ann Ramsey, equine attorney Victoria Townsend and San Francisco Bay Area designer, architect and author Cathy Remick. Remick will help students design an equine medical facility or equestrian center. Students will also meet Lauren Locke, with African Conservation Experience, an organization that places students and volunteers on wildlife conservation projects in Africa, and esteemed flutist and music arranger Monica Williams, who will conduct an exclusive workshop on equine music therapy. Designed as both a day camp for local students and an overnight sleep-away camp for long-distance travelers, BAE Vet Camp has welcomed students from across the state, throughout the country, and around the world. This summer, BAE Vet Camp has already registered a student from Dubai. Residential students stay in the camp’s horse-themed dorm located at Bay Area Equestrian Club’s private estate, just steps away from the stables and pastures. ✪ — Linda Rimac Colberg for BAE Vet Camp

From Disney to the gridiron
Sometimes going to a camp or clinic helps us think about our sport in different ways. For Artie Gigantino, a football coach who has worked at every level, including the NFL, inspiration was found in the unlikeliest of sources — Walt Disney. “As a young football coach, I always had a great interest and curiosity in finding easier and clearer ways in which to communicate information to my players,” said the coach who now does individual player evaluations and helps families through the recruiting process. But one night while watching a documentary on Walt Disney, he became intrigued at the Disneyland creator’s use of storyboarding in developing his famous animated shorts and films. The light bulb went on. “I took Mr. Disney’s idea and applied it to football,” he said. “I started to draw defenses on a dry erase board in my office, and left them up there for a month or two at a time. By simply seeing it each day, ideas and concepts of how to utilize this defense alignment would come to me. What type of blitzes to run? What type of stunts to run? To this day, every office I have ever worked in has walls of dry erase board in it in which ideas are storyboarded.” When you’re at your camp or clinic this summer, take it all in. The secret that could unlock your potential may be lurking as something totally unexpected. ✪ The camp is designed to condition players mentally and physically to be successful playing competitive baseball. P ILATES
More than you think D
id you know that Pilates is incredible cross training for any sport? Perhaps you always thought that Pilates is “just for girls”? Actually, Joseph Pilates was a professional boxer. Beginning in early 19th century Germany, Mr. Pilates extensively trained boxers, wrestlers, gymnasts, circus artists, dancers, actors and police officers. In our era, Joseph & Clara Pilates’ work has been embraced by professional athletes of every sport. Standout NFL receiver Antonio Brown, tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, Tiger Woods, John England, the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic and many others all use Pilates as an integral part of their training. Pilates is a method designed to strengthen the core, while increasing whole body strength, flexibility, balance and healthy body mechanics. Many commonly used training regimens utilize high repetitions with heavy weights, followed by stretching (hopefully) to prevent the tightening of muscles. In contrast, Pilates emphasizes short reps focused on perfect form and the “eccentric” contraction of the muscle. (An eccentric contraction occurs when the powerful work of a muscle happens while it is lengthening rather than shortening.) Flexibility is interwoven with balance in each exercise, and an “inside-out” approach to strengthening is used — working the deep muscles that stabilize the joints before addressing the superficial muscles. The result is a fantastic workout, newly found body awareness and a re-training of faulty body mechanics. And solid, healthy body mechanics create a smart and efficient quality of movement that allows athletes to harness untapped power to throw the ball farther, run faster and jump higher — all while preventing injury. Athletics require dynamic, multi-dimensional movement of our bodies. In sports, movements are complicated and two-dimensional. Tackling and hitting require rotation and torquing in any given direction with force. This means that two-dimensional bicep or hamstring curls or crunches don’t translate well into the complex movements needed for the power and agility of elite athletics. Specialized spring-resistant Pilates machines (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair) enable athletes to train dynamically, target the body’s deep muscles that stabilize the joints and build strength in multiple planes and alignments. This conditioning seamlessly translates to success at throwing a ball effectively, swinging a bat, dismounting off of an apparatus, sprinting towards home or defying injury from a hard hit. Strength and flexibility also determine speed. You may have a very fast gait, but if your muscles are tightly bound, your stride will be shorter than its potential. And tight muscles often lead to injury which can haunt an athlete for an entire career or force early retirement. Pilates can help prevent injuries, and can improve on strength, flexibility and speed after returning from injury. And Pilates training is a phenomenal resource for plyometrics. While decreasing the effects of gravity during jumping drills, athletes are able to re-pattern inefficient body mechanics that are slowing them down and dampening their power. Pilates takes an athlete’s already-dynamic body and mind and transforms it from the inside out. What happens when you increase deep core strength, flexibility, balance and new movement possibilities? An athlete’s game goes through the roof. ✪ — Tonya Maries Amos
