MARCH 16, 2017 NORCAL EDITION VOL. 8 ISSUE 130
MISSION:
Happy Campers W
elcome, once again, to our wide world of camps. Now in its seventh year, it’s clear that we can’t stop this annual resource guide. We can only hope to contain it. And that’s literally true. It took all we could muster to make this guide fit into 60 pages. You’re holding (or clicking through) our most robust Camps and Clinics Issue to date. Camp listings appear on 35 pages of this edition, a 17 percent increase from last year’s previous high of 30 pages. I say it every year in this space: If one can’t find a camp or clinic that fits them with this guide, then I question their motivation. That brings me to a question brought up every year when we do this special issue: With so many options, how does one choose the right camp? In previous versions of this issue, we’ve tried to have coaches and camp directors answer that question. And each time, they had good things to say and tips to follow. This year, we wanted to try something different. So we chose to ask successful teen athletes for feedback
on their best camp experiences: What led to their best camp experience? What should campers expect? What would they do if they directed a camp? Their answers were very illuminating. And different. That was probably the biggest takeaway I had from reading the responses we received. A camp experience is a personal experience. Every athlete is going to process it differently. And a camp that excites and motivates one athlete, may not do the same for another. That’s why I especially encourage the athletes who read our magazine to read the responses from the four Q & A’s posted throughout the camp listings. The first one can be found on P. 18. We had to condense the athlete interviews for print, so be sure to look for the full responses at SportStarsMag.com as well. And now the best thing I can do is get out of the way and let the camps and clinic bonanza begin. Happy hunting, fine readers. ✪

CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER
USTA NorCal Uses Four Scholarships To Reward Students Of The Game
L
ocated in Alameda, the United States Tennis Association, Northern California Section is a not-for-profit volunteer-based organization with approximately 34,000 adult members, 16,000 junior members and over 300 organization members. USTA Northern California is one of the 17 sections of the USTA, the governing body of tennis in America. As one of the larger geographic sections, USTA NorCal has been promoting, servicing, and administering tennis programs since 1953. With our volunteer Board of Directors, a staff of over 35 members, and hundreds of volunteers, USTA NorCal is devoted to promoting and developing the growth of tennis as an inclusive and inviting lifetime activity in Northern California and Northwest Nevada. Part of that promotion and development includes the annual Champions of Character Scholarships. These scholarships are designed to support and encourage multicultural tennis participation among high school students entering college. Even though applicants must be tennis players, the scholarships are awarded based on the merit of character, and how they embody and connect with the scholarship’s namesake.
The review committee looks at the following criteria. ›› Academic Merit ›› Written Narrative ›› Financial Need ›› Unusual Force of Character — X-Factor ›› Community Service Leadership USTA NorCal began awarding these scholarships more than two decades ago, making a difference in the lives for many of our youth. “There are more students of colors playing, but having financial help like this scholarship will definitely facilitate making tennis and higher education more possible for them,” said Kindness Nwakudu of Oakland, the 2013 Althea Gibson Scholarship recipient. The four different college scholarships are: ARTHUR ASHE SCHOLARSHIP (Value: $2,000/year; Open to: All): In 1994, the section enacted in perpetuity the Diversity Committee Arthur Ashe College Scholarship in memory of the valuable contributions Arthur Ashe made to tennis and the world at large. MICHAEL CHANG SCHOLARSHIP (Value: $2,000/ year; Open to: Asian-American applicants): In 2003, USTA NorCal enacted the Diversity Committee Michael Chang College Scholarship in honor of the valuable contributions Chang has made to tennis for his play and his sportsmanship. year; Open to: Hispanic applicants): In 2005, USTA NorCal enacted the Diversity Committee Pancho Gonzalez College Scholarship in honor of the valuable contributions Pancho Gonzalez made to tennis for his play and his sportsmanship. As the only Latino player of his time, Pancho Gonzalez experienced great adversity and obstacles in his life. It could be argued that this helped his tennis career. ALTHEA GIBSON SCHOLARSHIP (Value: $2,000/year; Open to: African-American applicants): In 2007, USTA NorCal enacted the Diversity Committee Althea Gibson College Scholarship in honor of the valuable contributions Althea Gibson made to tennis, as well as in honor of her memory, life, and achievements of this exceptional pioneer who paved the way for millions who followed. The deadline to apply is April 14. The application, list of requirements, past recipient spotlights memory, life and achievements and much more can be found at www.norcal.usta.com/scholarships. “I wasn’t very outgoing and had no self-confidence,” 2015 Michael Chang Scholarship recipient Taylor Chan said. “But, like Michael Chang said: ‘You know, I feel like if I don’t change something, then the results maybe are going to continue the way they have. That for me is not something I want to really be a part of.’ I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life standing in the corner. I wanted to stand out.” ✪ — All photos and copy provided by USTA NorCal

CAMPS + CLINICS 2017 CAMP PROFILES RIPKEN REYES The Cal sophomore middle infielder started nine of Cal’s first 14 games at second base in 2017. He appeared in 16 games as a true freshman in 2016 and recorded hits against Texas, USC and Northwestern. Prior to being a Golden Bear, he was a career .314 hitter at St. Mary’s High in Stockton. He was named the Tri-City Athletic League MVP in 2014. How much do you feel you improve in a camp setting vs. a practice setting? Camps offer a certain competitive nature that practice doesn‘t bring. You‘re up against people you don‘t know in a setting that might be uncomfortable, which I think brings the best out of a player. A practice setting offers more attention-to-detail oriented things that allow you to hone your skills. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? That you never know who is watching you. When you attend a camp, all eyes are on you. Your every move is analyzed and evaluated, and I have learned that it is the same way in life. Whether you‘re being evaluated by a coach, by your boss or by a teacher. … So when I‘m out on the field and in the classroom, I make sure to put my best foot forward, give 100% in everything I do while doing it with integrity because you never know when someone is watching you. Led By A Former Globetrotter, The Harlem Wizards Headed Are To The Bay Area
T
o most basketball fans, the word “Harlem” with basketball means only one thing: The Globetrotters. What many fans don’t know is that an off-shoot of the Globetrotters, The Harlem Wizards, was created in 1962 to provide a more “intimate” basketball show experience, taking all the trick-dribbling and high-flying comedy of the Globetrotters but pitting the Wizards against a customized team of a community’s choosing. In doing so, the Wizards became well known (especially in the Northeast United States) as a way to bring communities together, meet and interact with the players, laugh and enjoy a family-friendly event more accessible than the Globetrotters. This revision on an old classic has now brought laughter and “Wows” to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Sure enough, the Harlem Wizards are bringing their act to the Bay Area, performing at Northgate High gymnasium in Walnut Creek on Sunday, April 30, at 1pm. Among the Wizards performing at Northgate is Eric “Broadway” Jones. A native of Bronx, N.Y., and a former Globetrotter himself, Eric starred at Our Savior Lutheran High and — while only 6-foot, 2-inches — averaged a team-leading 15 rebounds per game to go with his 15-point scoring average. From there, “Broadway” went on to Urbana University of the Mid-Ohio Conference, leading his team to a 48-14 record over a two-year span. Although he once starred with the Globetrotters, Jones said his favorite moments have come as a Harlem Wizard. Dan Ourian, coordinator of the JFK University LEAP Program, a non-profit organization that uses Sport Psychology mental skills with underserved youth, is working closely with Northgate Athletic Director Dr. Earle Paynton to produce the event — which will raise funds for LEAP and the Northgate athletic department. These show-stopping Wizards will play against a team of teachers, staff, players and other “local celebrities,” who will be announced as the event gets closer. Adonal Foyle, former Golden State Warrior and ambassador for the team, will be on hand as the celebrity coach of the Northgate All-Stars. “The Broadway Unit will be in Walnut Creek for the April 30 game,” said Ourian, who worked for the Wizards as a staff person 10 years ago. “We are thrilled to have the Northgate All-Stars give it their best shot against the Wizards, helping to raise money for a great cause and putting on a fun-filled show!” Jones and the Wizards will make sure of the latter. “We live to entertain and put smiles on faces,” Jones said. “Every Wizards game we play in, it’s a different feel with a different crowd. But one thing never changes: everyone goes home happy.” About Jones, Ourian says, “Broadway is one of the funniest showmen alive. I’ve seen him in action many times and he never fails to make the crowd laugh and get them excited about the action. He even dances in the stands with the kids. We are lucky to have him and his unit coming to Northgate.” Tickets for what the Wizards call a “Slamtastic” event are currently on sale online at https:// harlemwizards.thundertix.com/events/100975 and will be available at Bancroft, Walnut Acres, and Valle Verde Elementary schools, as well as at Foothill Middle School. Advance tickets are $18 for students and $22 for adults, and will be $20 (students) and $25 (adults) at the door on game-day. Tip-off is 1pm; doors open at noon. ✪

What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? To attend camps as soon as I was of age and go to as many as possible. I would especially tell myself to attend specific college camps where I might be interested in attending. What expectations should an athlete have when attending a camp? I think that it’s normal and expected for an athlete to feel nervous when attending a camp; however, it helps to remember that everyone is nervous. I think it’s important to recognize that you will be introduced to new tips and techniques, but that’s what camps are all about. It might be awkward to try, and you might struggle, but trying new things is what makes you better. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would want my camp to have some form of scrimmaging or game situations. I believe it is important because it allows you to improve the intangible qualities that are essential for any athlete such as composure, sportsmanship and quick thinking. not started your college freshman year, you are eligible to attend. RUGBY 10
Rugby Culture And A Region U Editors note: This is the fourth and final installment of a fourpart series. Parts 1-3 can be found beginning with our January issue. All four articles are also available at sportstarsmag.com
I
n this, our final installment of this series, we will be spotlighting some of our local clubs, tournaments and what rugby culture is all about. One of the great things about our sport is the culture and “family” that comes with it. If you have played the game, you can go almost anywhere in the world, mention that you played and love the sport and, more likely than not, you will make an immediate connection with many fellow ruggers who will treat you like family. At Rugby NorCal, we are trying to bring that culture to our programs and to the sport in general throughout the United States. As a global game that is only just finding its footing in the U.S., some of these great traditions in our game have been forgotten. For example, in almost any other country, each rugby club owns their own clubhouse and fields. At the end of every match, the players and parents retire to the clubhouse to get some food, drink and socialize. There is usually a Player of the Match from each team awarded, and everyone goes home having made new friends and feeling good, win, lose or draw. While we may not all have our own facilities here in the U.S., the tradition continues at Rugby NorCal. All our teams have the opportunity to host home matches at the various age levels. After each match day, the host team also hosts a meal which can consist of a parent-led BBQ, sandwiches, pizza, etc., but everyone gathers and socializes with the opposition after the game is done. Player of the Match awards are given out, and coaches give speeches reinforcing rugby’s values and on what it means to be a steward of the game. This is the culture that is unique to our sport; it has no equivalent, and we want to share it with whoever will take the leap of faith to come try the best sport in the world with us.
ON THE CALENDAR The Rugby NorCal 15-a-side season is winding down for the youth and middle school divisions. We had our U8 endof-year Jamboree that was very well attended on March 4; our U10 Jamboree is March 11 and the U12 Jamboree happens March 18th. Middle School wraps up with boys and girls championships at Hall Park in Dixon on March 25th. March represents the half-way point to our High School season, which has been one of the most contested seasons to date. In the Boys Varsity Premier Division, it is wide open with two teams, Jesuit and Granite Bay, remaining undefeated. Girls varsity is going to be very interesting this year with four powerhouses: Amazons, Land Park, Danville and Pleasanton battling it out for No. 1. At Boys Division 1 & 2, Elsie Allen and De La Salle seem to be the teams to beat this year, although Sac PAL, San Joaquin and Chico may have something to say about that. On the 40

junior varsity side of things, in the Premier Division, Lamorinda and Peninsula Green lead the way, and in Boys Division 1 and 2, Sac PAL and Bellarmine are in the top spots for now. All this culminates in our high school championships, which are set for May 6 at the Stockton Soccer Complex in Stockton. It is sure to be an amazing day of rugby, and we encourage anyone to come and enjoy it with us. Over the Summer, Rugby NorCal hosts a robust Summer Sevens Series, the abbreviated version of the game, played on a full-size field, but for only seven minute halves, and with only seven players per team. This series is a lot of fun, and tournaments are hosted almost every weekend throughout the region, culminating in championships hosted in Dixon on July 30. For players new to the game, 7s are perhaps the best entry point into the sport as there is far less contact, with an emphasis placed on skill and evasiveness. For more information on the clubs in your area that participate in the Summer Sevens Series and how to get involved, please contact the Rugby NorCal office.
AREA INFLUENCES Rugby in Northern California has always been a hotbed of the sport. In fact, as a region Northern California has produced more international players on both the National Men’s and Women’s teams than any other region in the United States. Of our local clubs, Jesuit and Peninsula Green have produced the most capped Eagles (USA Rugby National Mascot) in our region on the men’s side, and Mother Lode and the Sacramento Amazons have produced the most recent Eagles on the women’s side. Since 2008, NorCal has produced eight national champions (Granite Bay – 2016 Boys Club; Sacramento Amazons – 2016 and 2010 Girls High School Nationals; Jesuit – 2013, 2011, 2009 and 2008 Boys Single School National Championships; Dixon – 2012 Boys Single School). It should be noted that the High School National Championships have been “Invitational” tournaments since 2013 when USA Rugby pulled funding and administrative support for the tournaments in favor of regional “all-star” tournaments instead. With our continued commitment to enhancing the rugby experience for our members through additional coach and referee education, advanced skill sessions for players and partnering with local rugby academies that can help further develop our players and coaches, it is clear that Rugby NorCal will continue to produce some of the country’s best rugby players and future Eagles for years to come. ✪ For more information on how to get involved, contact Mark Carney at mcarney@rugbynorcal.org or visit www.rugbynorcal.org
