THE CAMPS ARE A-COMIN’

I

n early March, my family and I headed north for the weekend to attend my nephew’s third birthday. My dad is a pretty routine follower of SportStars, so we typically spend some time talking about what’s coming up for the magazine. When he asked on this visit, I said it was almost Camps & Clinics time. And at that, my dad just shook his head. “It just amazes me how many options there are in there.” Us too! For the first time, in our ninth year of building our Camps & Clinics Resource Guide, the options were too plentiful. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have them ready for you. It’s just that you’ll need to dial up our online camps home to find some of them. That said, readers will still find a ton of options — close to 20 pages worth of listings — in this particular version. We’ve also included our usual helping of camp-related content, including one of my favorites: Our short Q & A interviews of current high school standouts regarding their own camp experiences. We have as many as seven in this issue, so make sure you find each one. And when you’ve thumbed through all that we have here, and you’re thirsty for more, be sure to check out SportStarsMag.com. You’ll not only find more camp listings than my dad can shake a stick at, but you’ll also find all of our current high school coverage. Our website is the only place you’ll find our coverage of the state basketball championships, including features, slide shows and more. We also will have final NorCal boys and girls rankings. And if it’s spring sports you’re looking for, we’re cranking up our coverage of baseball, softball, track and more as March progresses. So start thinking about more sunshine and let Campdemonium wash over you. ✪

T

Tips On How To Make Yourself More Recruitable he recruiting process can be an emotional rollercoaster for an unsigned/uncommitted senior volleyball athlete (and for juniors in the same situation). As the author of CollegeVolleyballCoach.com, I receive numerous emails from volleyball families who are a bit panicked because college coaches

are telling them they are done recruiting, or not responding at all. Families must remember that the fall is the most important time of the year for college volleyball coaches; the collegiate playing season. College coaches are trying to not get fired, to secure a raise, get a contract, or pushing for a great record so they have the opportunity to move up the job ranks, etc. While recruiting never ends, the coach’s focus is almost exclusively on the players in the gym and achieving the best possible season right now. As the collegiate playing season comes to a close, the collegiate recruiting season starts. College volleyball programs will have immediate roster spots and scholarship positions to fill for seniors and juniors. From NCAA Division I to junior colleges, injuries, academics, homesickness, playing-time issues or job changes can all create immediate roster spots and scholarship opportunities which may not have been available one month ago. The active collegiate recruiting season begins in late November, when the collegiate seasons come to a close. Make sure you are ready to be recruited. ›› Be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and have your NCAA ID number listed on all your recruiting literature/profile. ›› If you are a junior or a senior, have a current copy of your high school transcript and ACT/SAT test score ready to send to colleges. ›› Use the small window of time between the end of high school volleyball and the start of club volleyball to address any injuries or physical issues. Rest does not fix problems, it only masks them. ›› As a senior, you need to be at the top of your game early in the club season. College coaches are looking to make immediate recruiting decisions on seniors, so you don’t have time to play your way into shape. ›› Use practice to improve your weaknesses, but always play to your strengths in early tournaments: Show your best skills to watching college coaches. ›› Re-examine your list of outreach schools. If you have been contacting a certain level of program and no school is getting back to you, then it is time to adjust. Responses, or lack of responses, from a grouping of schools provides valuable feedback. ›› Create a five-minute highlight or skills video of your most recent court time to have available for collegiate coaches. Don’t show clips/repetitions from September of your high school season, as it will be too old. Film the last matches of high school, or better yet, film the first few club volleyball practices. ›› Stay active in your outreach to colleges and communication. Roster openings will be occurring all through the holidays. Even though you may have already written a school, college coaches don’t go back through all of their emails when they have an opening, they respond to the next incoming email. There is still time on the recruiting clock for seniors (and definitely juniors), but no more time to let slip by. ✪ — Matt Sonnichsen for NCVA

MORGAN HESS Heritage-Brentwood Softball / Idaho State-commit Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite memory is probably meeting athletes from all around the country. I really enjoyed playing with athletes from all around and competing with a wide range of girls. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Be louder and more outgoing during camps. College coaches love to see girls who hold a leadership role on the field, and I was pretty shy throughout my first few camps I attended. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? A camp setting is different from a practice setting because you are surrounded by a completely new group of girls, coaches, players, etc. It’s a new environment that makes you have to come out of your shell and perform on the spot. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps were the camps that were fast-paced and competitive. Some camps involve standing in a lot of lines and standing around, but the good camps were always constantly going and busy. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? Stand out and be a leader. Be noticed! There are so many girls who play softball and who are striving to play college softball. Standing out makes it easier for colleges to notice you. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The first thing I’d want my camp to have is many instructors for the athletes attending, so they could ask for help and advice. 6th-9th graders will play small games and have competition to develop con dence and a love for the game. Why Non-Traditional Sports Activities Can Have Power For Your Kids By Bob McFarlane

W

hy Do Non-Traditional Sports Activities Have Power For Your Kids? It was our second summer after starting our sports camp. A parent came to me right after checking in her son Owen on Day 1. She said “I really hope he likes it. He had a bad experience at school and he will not let me sign him up for any teams. I had to move mountains to get him to try your camp for one week.” As I probed, I found out that he had tried several times to go out and play traditional sports with the kids on the school playground and each time was told “you don’t know the rules, you don’t know how to dribble, or you stink.” After the third rejection, he determined sports were not for him and he was not an athlete. The saddest part, Owen was only in first grade. The real question, how many millions of kids have had the same experience? I am actually a huge fan of traditional sports — when they are done right. After 30 years of teaching P.E., special education, coaching varsity teams and building summer sports camps, I believe the power of a great sports program is in its creativity and appeal to the masses. It’s a fact that traditional sports create an immediate hierarchy, regardless of the age level

or platform of play. It doesn’t matter which sport you pick, by third grade, the kids who have had the experience and training start to shine and others are left to feel inferior. Traditional sports camps follow the usual pattern: periods where kids rotate with their teams from one sport to another. If the camp describes the games and it sounds familiar (football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc.) then the camp lacks a non-traditional approach. Unique yet competitive, modified games are what you are looking for because they eliminate boredom and balance the playing field for any level of athlete. Traditional sports are fine to use, but it should be a choice. Non-traditional games are designed around the premise of creatively modifying games, drills and activities in order to make them more inclusive and more engaging for all athletic levels. In short, the end goal is to create a great game that everyone loves and can feel successful at. When no one is an “expert athlete” at a particular game, then the traditional hierarchy is minimized. As a result, the potential for appropriate challenge, inclusion, teamwork and successful athletic experiences for

every level athlete is increased. Culture is the umbrella over all activities and can also be non-traditional. What does the organizational leadership do to train their coaches across multiple platforms? What is the structure of the camp message, or is it too vague that you really can’t tell? At our camp, we teach campers how to be a Triple Impact Competitor as defined by the award-winning national organization, The Positive Coaching Alliance. We PCA-certify our coaches, teach the campers segments each morning, use “sticky message” reinforcement techniques all day long, and have a huge awards ceremony at the end of the week to recognize the camper from each team who best exemplifies the TIC message. Everything we do at camp revolves around a well-defined culture. Our camp motto is to “Redefine What It Means To Be A Winner.” Camps, leagues, club teams and teachers should have a clearly defined message or they are just rolling dice with what your kids take away from them. My suggestion: Read through the lines of marketing material vs. actual substance. There are a lot of phenomenal programs out there, but do your research. Thankfully, Owen had a great week at our camp, won the TIC award, and asked his mom to sign him up for several leagues following camp. We can’t always protect our kids from the negative situations, but we can make sure they get some great experiences to balance out the equation. ✪ Bob McFarlane is the co-founder and director of Bald Eagle Sports Camps. He’s also a Positive Coaching Alliance-certified coach and P.E. teacher at Los Altos High School. Learn more about his camps at baldeaglecamps.com

CHASE SALDATE Gilroy Wrestling / Michigan State-commit Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? Dorming with my best friends always makes memories. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would say to pay attention more. I was more about fun and less about paying attention. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? Bonding more with your team. You are with them for multiple days not just two hours a day. This just brings the team closer. What did the best camps you attended have in common? They all were overnight, and although serious, they still had games in some of the sessions. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? Definitely to keep your dorm clean and to be responsible with time. No one is there to make you go to a session. Today I keep my room more organized and show up to practice on time. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would say a great cafeteria. Wrestlers love their food — so having good food is definitely important. player and coaching experience. Held on the Branham campus in San Jose, beginning players will learn the basics of field hockey while more experienced players will be challenged in their skills and game play. Serving Up Aid USTA NorCal Prepares To Once Again Award $8,000 In Scholarships To High School Tennis Players Of Various Heritages

T

ennis is a game one can take with them throughout his or her life. All it requires is a racquet and a place to play. The Northern California section of the United States Tennis Association wants to make it easier for players to take the game to college. USTA Northern California’s four Champions of Character Scholarships have been making a difference in young tennis players’ lives for more than two decades now. The four scholarships are designed to support and encourage multicultural tennis participation among high school students entering college. Even though applicants must be tennis players, the scholarships are awarded based on the merit of the character of the applicant, and how they embody and connect with the scholarship’s namesake. Each scholarship is named after an iconic tennis player: Arthur Ashe (open to all), Michael Chang (open to AsianAmerican applicants), Pancho Gonzalez (open to Hispanic-American applicants) and Althea Gibson (open to AfricanAmerican applicants). Academic merit, written narrative, financial need, community service leadership and “unusual force of character” are all part of the criteria considered by the review committee. 2018 USTA scholarship recipient and El Cerrito High The most recent winSchool graduate, Cienna Clark ners of the four scholarships are Sarah Bahsoun (Arthur Ashe), Hillary Phu (Michael Chang), Marianna Herrera (Pancho Gonzalez) and Cienna Clark (Althea Gibson). Bahsoun is a Los Gatos High graduate who helped the Wildcats win the CIF Northern California Regional Championship as a senior. She currently attends and plays for Claremont McKenna College. Phu began playing tennis as part of Youth Tennis Advantage in Oakland. She later became a leader for Westmoor High in Daly City. She currently attends Skyline College in San Bruno. Herrera hails from the central part of the state, graduating from Kerman High. Her love of tennis has been a stabilizing force in her life. “Not only did this sport get me through issues in my life, but it also allowed me to create long lasting friendships with my teammates,” Herrera told USTA. Herrera now attends San Jose State. Finally, Clark grew up in a tennis family and attended USTA camps before joining the El Cerrito High tennis team. She’s currently a freshman at Mills College in Oakland. The deadline to apply for the 2019 scholarships — each carrying a $2,000 value — is April 19. The application, list of requirements, past recipient spotlights, and much more can be found at www.norcal.usta.com/scholarships. ✪

ALI BAMBERGER Carondelet-Concord Basketball / Washington-commit What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would go back and tell myself to pay more attention to the lectures. At excel camps, there used to always be a meaningful lecture, and to us campers it was a break from playing and the heat outside. Now that I am older, I have heard replays of the camp lectures, and wish I would’ve payed more attention. Coach Frank Allocco was one of the best coaches I’ve met, and I wish my middle school self would’ve payed more attention to his insight on the game of basketball and life. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a pratice setting? Since I am definitely a social person, I would have to say meeting new people. I got to meet new players and coaches throughout these camps. Everyday during these camps you were playing against new people: in games and every single competition. At practice, things can sometimes get monotonous, but at camps everyday was a new experience. What did the best camps you attended have in common? All the coaches had great, welcoming attitudes. Being a young girl (in a coed setting), these camps didn’t have as many girls as boys. The camps included the girls, and let us compete against the boys. This was definitely another one of my favorite things. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? I think it would have to be, that basketball is fun. The game of basketball isn’t just as simple as putting the ball in the basket. It can be learning new moves that you’ve never seen or tried before, and for me getting out of my comfort zone is something that made me great. Getting out of your comfort zone to learn new things should be fun. It shouldn’t make you uneasy or worried. How else are you supposed to get better if you just constantly practice and do the same things? If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The first thing my camp would have, would be to have as many girls as possible. To me, growing the game of basketball for little girls is so important. Being able to compete with other little girls is what’s going to make them fall in love with the game. When I was younger, being one of around seven girls at a camp was intimidating. But being around more girls made me more comfortable. Camps aren’t always about purely becoming the best basketball player ever. They are about improving you as a player but for some they are an exploration to see if you truly like the sport or not. star player. NCVA Finds Success With Developmental Youth League

t’s that time of year where one can visit just about any community baseball field on a Saturday morning and see 4- and 5-year olds playing a T-Ball game that loosely resembles baseball. The boys and girls who play are never sure if they’ve won or lost, or if they were safe or out. But they’re excited to come back the next week. And in many cases, the kids continue in the sport up through the more competitive divisions as they grow older. Now, think of the T-Ball concept played out on the volleyball court. That’s the idea behind of the Northern California Volleyball Association’s Youth League, though with slightly older participants. In association with some of its Bay Area-based clubs, the NCVA began the developmental league in the fall of 2012. “We really wanted to offer something for our clubs that allowed for younger programming,” NCVA Chief Program Officer, Melissa Walker said. “On the boys side, we’d just barely started our 14U power league. It was growing, but after we started youth league it doubled the next year.” NCVA Youth League began offering just two age groups of 5th/6th graders and 7th/8th graders. Points are kept, however the matches are played with some adjusted rules to help the new players develop and gain confidence within the sport. The league consists of four league days each season with round robin tournaments that typically run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Now in 2019, there’s a spring Youth League for girls and a fall Youth League for both boys and girls. The divisions go as low as 3rd/4th grade now. And while the number of participating teams throughout the divisions hasn’t significantly grown, the competitive divisions at the younger levels have. “For a long time volleyball was really considered a high school sport,” Walker said. “Kids don’t really find it until they attend high school. “This year (NCVA) had an 11U Power League and an 11s division in every tournament we offer. Now our 12s have grown, and our 13s in girls went from 50 teams to 90 teams. These age groups and younger groups have really grown because of the Youth League.” Participating in Youth League starts by finding a club that participates in it. Some of the Bay Area clubs that take part include NorCal Volleyball Club of Pleasanton, Mountain View Volleyball Club, Absolute Volleyball Club of San Rafael and SF Juniors of San Francisco. The 2019 Spring Youth League will wrap up on April 7. Fall Youth League begins in mid-October and runs through mid-December. For more information on the league, visit NCVA.com/girls/ league-play/youth-league/ ✪

the

ending rules A few of the primary rule adjustments applied to NCVA Youth League play.

SERVING: ›› Players unable to serve ball over the net from the end line on their first attempt may re-serve after being allowed to take a step onto the court. ›› If the player takes a step in and makes the serve over the net, then the player must take a step backward at their next serve attempt. ›› A player who can jump server is not allowed to re-serve or step on the court before serving. ›› Re-serving is not allowed on balls that go over net but out of bounds. 3RD-6TH GRADE PLAYERS: ›› This division uses timed matches that last 35 minutes each. ›› Scoring is continuous for 15 minutes, with no limit. The most points at the end of the 15 minutes wins the “set.” Teams then switch sides for another 15-minute set. ›› Teams limited to three serves in a row. Then a side-out is declared without awarding a point. 7TH-9TH GRADE PLAYERS: ›› There is not a point cap for this age group, teams must win by two points. ›› Teams are limited to six serves in a row. Then a side-out is declared without awarding a point.

NOAH BLAKE Del Oro-Loomis Wrestling / Air Force-commit Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp memory is when I was in Illinois and Coah Powell (one of Oak Park’s coaches) told me to wrestle Chris Dardanes, Izaya White, and one other junior in a four-mat rotation when I was a incoming freshman. It was a huge honor and a really fun experience. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? The only thing that I would possibly change is that I wish I branched out a little more to meet more people. Because the other kids that attend camps are likely a lot like-minded to me. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? The camp setting lets me learn from new people with new perspectives that I might not get from my coach. It also lets me branch out and network with other coaches and wrestlers that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps I attended had instructors who really love the sport of wrestling. And kids who are there to learn, not screw around. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? To be comfortable with failure in the practice room, and to not hold back just because I’m wrestling someone new. Another very helpful thing I learned from Ryan Loder at camp was how to approach all aspects in my life with the correct mindset, and how to prepare myself accordingly. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? Good well-known technicians so that more kids will show up, and they will learn high-level technique. camp focuses on fundamental ball skills, positioning and game-like situations for rising 5th-8th graders. PEYTON OMANIA De La Salle-Concord ’18/Michigan State; Former State Wrestling Champion Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp and clinic is the Greco World Duals at the Concord Youth Center. We have 2-3 foreign teams come in for two weeks of training. I think it is really important to expose yourself to as much wrestling as possible if you want to be the best. On top of that, several states will bring teams to wrestle. It’s a really fun and competition week of training. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? To soak it all up. Everyone who is talking to you is talking to you for a reason. But don’t forget to have fun. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? You get to see new things. Sometimes coaches and wrestlers do things different than you and your coach does. You might find some stuff you like more than your own. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? It taught me to fight a lot harder. Sometimes new training partners spark up some new energy. WRESTLING De La Salle Wrestling Camp Designed as an introductory and intermediate level camp. We will be emphasizing the fundamentals needed to learn more advanced sport specific wrestling skills and tactics. Our curriculum is geared to prepare campers for beginner and intermediate level competitions. Open to incoming 4th-9th graders.
