E

ach year as we work on compiling this annual Camps & Clinics Resource Guide — and we’ve been at it for over a decade — I’m always reminded of my own camp experiences growing up. I attended a nearby high school’s basketball camp from 4th through 8th grade. I also attended a three-night kids summer camp in Lassen National Forest for a couple years as a middle schooler. I always looked forward to each experience, which is why I made it a point to return to both later during my high school years — as a student instructor (at the basketball camp) and camp counselor at the Mt. Lassen camp. It’s the latter experiences that I found myself thinking about most this time around. Part of the reason for that is a job fair that we’re helping one of our advertising partners promote. You can learn more about the job fair by visiting page 5, but it’s basically looking for camp assistants and counselors. If you enjoy teaching your sport, or enjoy being around young kids, don’t pass up those types of opportunities. Being a student assistant at a sports camp, or a counselor in charge of your own group of kids at an outdoor camp, can be a ton of fun. (Psst! It also looks good on college resumes too.) But beyond that, it’s a chance for athletes to give back to a camp that meant something to them growing up. A chance to pass on the positive experience that they received. And there’s no shortage of NorCal student athletes who have had positive camps and clinics experiences. Take a peek at our collection of athletes highlighted throughout the magazine talking about the value of their camp experiences. We’ve included several from over the last couple years, plus added a few new ones as well. I didn’t get paid for either one of the camps I volunteered to work at — so if there are some offering actual employment (like at a job fair! Hint hint.) it may be worth checking out. Sharing a passion for one’s sport, or for a love of the outdoors, is priceless though. Don’t be afraid to dive in. And if you’re still looking to be the camper, well there’s no shortage of options to check out on the following pages. Dig in and find your next chance to get better, or to discover something new. ✪

NCVA Finds Success With Developmental Youth League

I

t’s that time of year where one can visit just about any community baseball field on a Saturday morning and see 4- and 5-year olds playing a T-Ball game that loosely resembles baseball. The boys and girls who play are never sure if they’ve won or lost, or if they were safe or out. But they’re excited to come back the next week. And in many cases, the kids continue in the sport up through the more competitive divisions as they grow older. Now, think of the T-Ball concept played out on the volleyball court. That’s the concept of the Northern California Volleyball Association’s Youth League, though with slightly older participants. In association with some of its Bay Area-based clubs, the NCVA began the developmental league in the fall of 2012. It now runs twice a year. “We really wanted to offer something for our clubs that allowed for younger programming,” NCVA Chief Program Officer, Melissa Walker said. “On the boys side, we’d just barely started our 14U power league. It was growing, but after we started youth league it doubled the next year.” NCVA Youth League began offering just two age groups of 5th/6th graders and 7th/8th graders. Points are kept, however the matches are played with some adjusted rules to help the new players develop and gain confidence within the sport. The league consists of four league days each season with round robin tournaments that typically run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Now in 2022, there are Youth Leagues for both boys and girls in the spring and fall. There are four division now: 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade, 7th/8th grade and 9th grade. “For a long time volleyball was really considered a high school sport,” Walker said. “Kids don’t really find it until they attend high school. Participating in Youth League starts by finding a club that participates in it. Some of the Bay Area clubs that take part include NorCal Volleyball Club of Pleasanton, Mountain View Volleyball Club, Absolute Volleyball Club of San Rafael and SF Juniors of San Francisco. The 2022 Spring Youth League will wrapped up on April 10. Fall Youth League begins in mid-October and runs through mid-December. For more information on the league, visit NCVA.com/girls/leagueplay/youth-league/ ✪

the

bending rules A few of the primary rule adjustments applied to NCVA Youth League play. SERVING: ›› Players unable to serve ball over the net from the end line on their first attempt may re-serve after being allowed to take a step onto the court. ›› If the player takes a step in and makes the serve over the net, then the player must take a step backward at their next serve attempt. ›› A player who can jump server is not allowed to re-serve or step on the court before serving. ›› Re-serving is not allowed on balls that go over net but out of bounds. 3RD-6TH GRADE PLAYERS: ›› This division uses timed matches that last 35 minutes each. ›› Scoring is continuous for 15 minutes, with no limit. The most points at the end of the 15 minutes wins the “set.” Teams then switch sides for another 15-minute set. ›› Teams limited to three serves in a row. Then a side-out is declared without awarding a point. 7TH-9TH GRADE PLAYERS: ›› There is not a point cap for this age group, teams must win by two points. ›› Teams are limited to six serves in a row. Then a side-out is declared without awarding a point. Follow Us On Twitter & Instagram, Like Us On Facebook!

Paradise dise Overnight And Destination Camps Should Regain Popularity This Summer, And A Series Of Running Camps In Oregon May Be Among The Most Appealing

I

f last summer was a soft re-opening for summer camps and clinics, 2022 appears ready to blow the doors open. With much of the pandemic seemingly in the rearview, the camps and clinics scene is back with a full variety of offerings. Among the styles of camps expected to have a huge uptick this summer, as opposed to last summer, are overnight camps. While several camps returned last year following the vaccine rollout and state “re-opening” in June, many families were still justifiably skittish about travel and lodging. That trepidation won’t be as strong this summer, and destination camps should thrive. In compiling our many camp listings for this resource guide, one set of overnight camps seemed worthy of highlighting. The Youth Runner Camp series produced by Youth Runner Magazine seems to be a perfect marriage between setting, training and overall experience. If you’re a young track, cross country or overall running enthusiast, we can’t think of a better set-up than what the Youth Runner Camps are offering. All three camps take place in Oregon. The first two are open to runners ages 12-18, and the last one is a middle school-specific camp for 11-14 year-olds. Let’s start with the first one. The four-day camp begins on June 20, the first day after the Nike Outdoor Nationals conclude at The University of Oregon. Thus setting up the opportunity for campers to attend the nationals before attending the camp approximately 45 miles east in Blue River, Oregon. The Blue River site is located in a mountain setting with a track that recently hosted an international competition during an off-day in the U.S. Olympics Trials. It will feature instruction from some of the nation’s most renown coaches, including Gonzaga University coach Pat Tyson (who just so happened to be Steve Prefontaine’s roommate at Oregon). There will also be a whitewater trip along the McKenzie River as a bonus. The second camp may have even more appeal to young running fans. It’s based in Eugene, Oregon, from July 17-20 — the same time over 200 international teams are there for the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field. Campers will be able to attend two sessions of the championships, as well as take part in the Asics 5K run hosted by the championships and open to the community. Finally, the Elite Middle School Camp is held from July 31-Aug. 4 near Mt. Hood. It’s drawn national acclaim for camps designed for this age group and attractis runners from throughout the country and beyond. Camp organizers say it will host two girls from Switzerland this year. “The fact that it’s strictly middle schoolers is in itself unique,” Bob Williams said. Williams was a decorated University of Oregon runner and steeplechase All-American in the 1960s. He’s coached at Concordia University and several high schools over the years. “We’re in a position to help these kids learn how to be the best they can be as runners and people. Typically we have kids who are competitive, who love to run and love to learn.” Among the running highlights from the Middle School Camp is a bus trip to Timothy Lake for a nine-mile run that includes awesome views of Mt. Hood. Learn more about the Youth Runner Camp series by visiting youthrunnercamp.com A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME A few other overnight camps caught our attention — both basketball related. NorCalSportTV is once again offering it’s five-night camp in Sonora. This year they’ve expanded again to offer a total of five camps, three for boys and two for girls. Info on that camp can be found at norcalsportstv.com/camp. For those looking for a shorter overnight option, the Father-Son Basketball Camp at Saint Mary’s College is worth a look. This weekend (July 16-17) camp is for younger kids (ages 6-12) to attend a camp with their dad and includes the option of a one-night stay in an SMC dorm room. ✪ — Story By Chace Bryson

HERITAGE-BRENTWOOD ’19 | IDAHO STATE SOFTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite memory is probably meeting athletes from all around the country. I really enjoyed playing with athletes from all around and competing with a wide range of girls. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Be louder and more outgoing during camps. College coaches love to see girls who hold a leadership role on the field, and I was pretty shy throughout my first few camps I attended. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? A camp setting is different from a practice setting because you are surrounded by a completely new group of girls, coaches, players, etc. It’s a new environment that makes you have to come out of your shell and perform on the spot. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps were the camps that were fast-paced and competitive. Some camps involve standing in a lot of lines and standing around, but the good camps were always constantly going and busy. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? Stand out and be a leader. Be noticed! There’s are so many girls who play softball and who are striving to play college softball. Standing out makes it easier for colleges to notice you. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The first thing I’d want my camp to have is many instructors for the athletes attending, so they could ask for help and advice.

JACKSON PAVITT CARDINAL NEWMAN-SANTA ROSA ‘20/ CAL POLY-SAN LUIS OBISPO FOOTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? The QB Collective camp in Southern California. I gained the most knowledge at that camp that I have at any other camp by far, and had a great time competing/participating. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Focus less on going to a bunch of camps, but instead just working on my own craft and going to fewer camps. ... Instead of going to a bunch of singular college camps, go to two or three mega camps where there are many eyes in one place. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? If camps are done in the right way, it allows you to slow down and focus on certain specific pieces of your skill set without all the additional distraction/action. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps all gave me something to work on at home by the time I was leaving. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? At QB Collective, the quarterbacks all learned a warm-up for arm care, and I use that same warmup before every time I throw the football now. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The one thing I’d want to have at my camp is either have it be a free or low-cost camp, so it is more available to everyone. CALIFORNIA-SAN RAMON ’22 | LSU BASEBALL SIGNEE What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Work hard. It’s important to play hard, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. We are humans and we all make mistakes. If you get 1 percent better everyday then you’ll be 7 percent better in a week. What did you gain from a camp setting that you couldn’t have gained in a practice setting? I was always able to gain more information and learn more from the coaches running the camp. They have to run practice so it’s hard to get that one on one action but I’m camps, you are able to get those. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you? One thing that has stayed with me is working hard. Sometimes you go to a camp and you do not know what the talent is like. TANNER SALISBURY SAN RAMON VALLEY-DANVILLE ’22 | UNLV FOOTBALL SIGNEE Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp or clinic memory was at the Stack Sports showcase. I trained for a few months leading up to it mostly working on my 40 yard dash. I ran a 4.62 and was very happy with my performance. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would tell my younger self to relax, have fun, and enjoy and embrace the competition. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? Pushing myself out of my comfort zone. In life and football I learned the more I pushed myself to do things that I wasn’t used to or didn’t personally like at the time, the more I grew as a person and athlete. What did the best camps you attended have in common? Talent and competition. Those two elements really brought the best out of me and other athletes there. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? I learned to not be afraid of failing or matching up against better competition, but instead to embrace it and show everybody what you got and that you belong there as well! If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would want my camp to have people who want to be there to compete and show what they have. No matter the talent level of the camper, I would make sure to help them succeed and give them advice on what their long term goals are — and what they need to do to achieve those goals.

MARIN CATHOLIC-KENTFIELD ’20 | LOYOLA MARYMOUNT VOLLEYBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? Playing doubles with my friends and having fun. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I wish I could tell my younger self to start playing volleyball earlier. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? At camp I got to play against older girls with more experience and got to learn from them. What did the best camps you attended have in common? They were all really fun and very informative and I got a lot out of going. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? That volleyball is a team sport (There’s no “I” in team) If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would want my camp to be fun, and a camp where people want to come back to. I also want my camp to be competitive where kids learn something new everyday.

“I don’t think you should feel like you’re getting behind, or your child is getting behind, if they don’t specialize.” — DePaul University women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain

n today’s society, there is a strong cultural emphasis on elite status as a requirement for athletic success. Whether this status is gained through scholarships or professional participation, it goes consistently in hand with pressuring children towards single-sport training. Parents and coaches are looking to fulfill the 10,000 hour practice requirement perpetuated in the media; they are urged towards early-age, high-intensity training by the popularized triumphs of Tiger Woods and Andre Agassi. The consequence of such promotion is an increase in early sports specialization. “Four years ago, I was trying to find a basketball team for my daughter,” former collegiate All-American and NBA veteran Keith Van Horn wrote for his blog. “She tried out and made one of the top teams in the state (Colorado), but before we agreed to join the team, we had to agree to the coach’s conditions which were for the most part reasonable, except for one. We had to make a one-year commitment and only play for that team. “The coach stated we must focus only on basketball or my daughter will not become as good as she can be.” Early specialization in a single sport has increased tremendously in recent years. Young athletes are participating more in multiple, high-commitment teams of the same sport and pursuing extra training from specialists. While this intensified training might be expected to produce a higher caliber of athlete, in reality it can be mentally and physically damaging. The repetitive microtrauma of specialization leaves athletes vulnerable to overuse injury and burnout as well as can deter athletes from long-term participation in a sport. Alternatively, multi-sport participation has shown to build strong athletic foundations and increase chances of gaining elite status (whilst maintaining enjoyment) in one sport. “I think playing multiple sports can maybe help you in the sport that you’re the best at,” DePaul University women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain said in a video produced by the Positive Coaching Alliance. “You can have different roles on different sports teams.” It is critical for parents and coaches to promote a regimen of diverse athletic activity that accommodates a young athlete’s interests. When physioFollow Us On Twitter & Instagram, Like Us On Facebook!

logical and skeletal development are still occurring, the practice of repetitive movements will increase risk of injury. Additionally, serious athletic time commitments can be socially isolating and psychologically stunting. “In youth sports, more isn’t always better. Sometimes it’s just more,” Van Horn wrote, riffing off a quote by screenwriter Barbara Benedek. Young athletes should instead immerse themselves in a variety of sports to attain long-term success. “I don’t think you should feel like you’re getting behind, or your child is getting behind, if they don’t specialize,” Chastain said. “Sometimes that leads to burnout and it may lead to not recognizing that you’re going to be very good at another sport also.” A focus on comprehensive, physical skills rather than specifics, as well as avoidance of excessive time commitments, can prevent burnout and injury and create a healthier lifestyle for the athlete. Below are some key statistics around early sport specialization that were highlighted by Dr. Joe Donahue, a former physician for Stanford Athletics and the San Francisco 49ers. Donahue, a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Leadership Board, used a collection of 2019 reports from professionals Seth Cheatham, Mia Smucny and others. ›› Only one-half of one percent of high school athletes make it to the professional level. ›› Up to 54 percent of all injuries seen in pediatric sports medicine are related to overuse. ›› Young athletes who are highly specialized are 36 percent more likely to suffer a serious overuse injury than those who are not. ›› Focus on one sport can slow critical social development and lead to stunted psychosocial growth. ›› At one Division I university, 88 percent of the athletes had participated in two to three sports as children. Nearly 70 percent delayed sports specialization until the age of 12 or older. ›› As much as 97 percent of professional athletes believed being a multisport athlete was beneficial to their success. ✪

TRE MARONIC BEAR RIVER-GRASS VALLEY ’20 | WESTERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp was definitely the University of Wyoming football camp. It was the best ran camp I have ever attended. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? The biggest thing for me was that I always tried to get myself noticed at the camps by being the first one in the lines and first one in drills. Coaches loved to see who would step up first. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? The biggest difference between a camp and a practice is that you get to perform and compete in front of coaches and kids you don’t see everyday. Being able to compete against other great players makes it a whole new ball game. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps were the ones where the coaches actually interacted with the players. The coaches actually cared about teaching you the game. The best camps for me were the ones that were not in it for the money, but in it for the game and the players. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? You never know who is watching, but someone always is. Work hard in everything you do at the camps because you never know if someone is watching you or not. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would start with a coaches introduction. So every player knew the coaches or who was helping, that way they would feel more comfortable asking questions. The camps that didn’t do this made it harder for me to go up to coaches to ask questions. When they did the introduction at the start, I felt more comfortable talking to them about the game. Football Camp is on athletes serious about football at the next level. The four-day camp (June 20-23, 12:30-3 p.m.) which will be focused on high level technique mirroring the practice and tradition of De La Salle’s storied program. ALI BAMBERGER CARONDELET-CONCORD ’19 | SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would go back and tell myself to pay more attention to the lectures. At excel camps, there used to always be a meaningful lecture, and to us campers it was a break from playing and the heat outside. Now that I am older, I have heard replays of the camp lectures, and wish I would’ve payed more attention. Coach Frank Allocco was one of the best coaches I’ve met, and I wish my middle school self would’ve payed more attention to his insight on the game of basketball and life. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? Since I am definitely a social person, I would have to say meeting new people. I got to meet new players and coaches throughout these camps. Everyday during these camps you were playing against new people: in games and every single competition. At practice, things can sometimes get monotonous, but at camps everyday was a new experience. What did the best camps you attended have in common? All the coaches had great, welcoming attitudes. Being a young girl (in a coed setting), these camps didn’t have as many girls as boys. The camps included the girls, and let us compete against the boys. This was definitely another one of my favorite things. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? I think it would have to be, that basketball is fun. The game of basketball isn’t just as simple as putting the ball in the basket. It can be, learning new moves that you’ve never seen or tried before, and for me getting out of my comfort zone is something that made me great. Getting out of your comfort zone to learn new things, should be fun. It shouldn’t make you uneasy or worried. How else are you supposed to get better if you just constantly practice and do the same things? If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The first thing my camp would have, would be as many girls as possible. To me, growing the game of basketball for little girls is so important. Being able to compete with other little girls, is what’s going to make them fall in love with the game. When I was younger, being 1 of around 7 girls at a camp was intimidating. But being around more girls made me more comfortable. Camps aren’t always about purely becoming the best basketball player ever. They are about improving you as a player, but for some they are an exploration for if you truly like the sport or not.

Why Non-Traditional Sports Activities Can Have Power For Your Kids

W

hy do non-traditional sports activities have power for your kids? It was our second summer after starting our sports camp. A parent came to me right after checking in her son Owen on Day 1. She said “I really hope he likes it. He had a bad experience at school and he will not let me sign him up for any teams. I had to move mountains to get him to try your camp for one week.” As I probed, I found out that he had tried several times to go out and play traditional sports with the kids on the school playground and each time was told “you don’t know the rules, you don’t know how to dribble, or you stink.” After the third rejection, he determined sports were not for him and he was not an athlete. The saddest part, Owen was only in first grade. The real question, how many millions of kids have had the same experience? I am actually a huge fan of traditional sports — when they are done right. After 30 years of teaching P.E., special education, coaching varsity teams and building summer sports camps, I believe the power of a great sports program is in its creativity and appeal to the masses. It’s a fact that traditional sports create an immediate hierarchy, regardless of the age level or platform of play. It doesn’t matter which sport you pick, by third grade, the kids who have had the experience and training start to shine and others are left to feel inferior. Traditional sports camps follow the usual pattern: periods where kids rotate with their teams from one sport to another. If the camp describes the games and it sounds familiar (football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc.) then the camp lacks a non-traditional approach. Unique yet competitive, modified games are what you are looking for because they eliminate boredom and balance the playing field for any level of athlete. Traditional sports are fine to use, but it should be a choice. Non-traditional games are designed around the premise of creatively modifying games, drills and activities in order to make them more inclusive and more engaging for all athletic levels. In short, the end goal is to create a great game that everyone loves and can feel successful at. When no one is an “expert athlete” at a particular game, then the traditional hierarchy is minimized. As a result, the potential for appropriate challenge, inclusion, teamwork and successful athletic experiences for every level athlete is increased. Culture is the umbrella over all activities and can also be non-traditional. What does the organizational leadership do to train their coaches across multiple platforms? What is the structure of the camp message, or is it too vague that you really can’t tell? At our camp, we teach campers how to be a Triple Impact Competitor as defined by the award-winning national organization, The Positive Coaching Alliance. We PCA-certify our coaches, teach the campers segments each morning, use “sticky message” reinforcement techniques all day long, and have a huge awards ceremony at the end of the week to recognize the camper from each team who best exemplifies the TIC message. Everything we do at camp revolves around a well-defined culture. Our camp motto is to “Redefine What It Means To Be A Winner.” Camps, leagues, club teams and teachers should have a clearly defined message or they are just rolling dice with what your kids take away from them. My suggestion: Read through the lines of marketing material vs. actual substance. There are a lot of phenomenal programs out there, but do your research. Thankfully, Owen had a great week at our camp, won the TIC award, and asked his mom to sign him up for several leagues following camp. We can’t always protect our kids from the negative situations, but we can make sure they get some great experiences to balance out the equation. ✪

CHASE SALDATE GILROY ’20 | MICHIGAN ST. WRESTLING Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? Dorming with my best friends always makes memories. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would say to pay attention more. I was more about fun and less about paying attention. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? Bonding more with your team. You are with them for multiple days not just two hours a day. This just brings the team closer. What did the best camps you attended have in common? They all were overnight, and although serious, they still had games in some of the sessions. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? Definitely to keep your dorm clean and to be responsible with time. No one is there to make you go to a session. Today I keep my room more organized and show up to practice on time. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would say a great cafeteria. My favorite clinic is Linemen Win Games coached by Jon Osterhout, head coach at American River College Football. He teaches offensive and defensive linemen agility, blocking techniques and pass protection techniques. Several great players have gone to the camp including Eddie Vanderdoes of the Oakland Raiders, and my two brothers of course. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Not to be anxious. Have fun and enjoy every minute of it. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? A camp setting it completely different from normal practice because you’re learning alongside the guys you usually complete against. During that practice, we’re all in the same boat so we become allies instead of enemies. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps are well organized and have plenty of coaching staff so the athletes get personal attention and learn more. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I’d want my camp to have a diverse coaching staff. This gives the athletes many different looks, and the opportunity to learn from various programs.

(In a camp), being around collegiate athletes and some of the best coaches in the game made me want to perform better and show off a bit. Rather than in a practice setting where i’m more relaxed and focused on getting the kinks out. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? That in order to be the best you have to practice and have the mindset like the best. You have to mentally prepare yourself for every condition, situation and possibility. FREEDOM-OAKLEY ’18 | FRESNO STATE SOFTBALL What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? To attend camps as soon as I was of age and go to as many as possible. I would especially tell myself to attend specific college camps where I might be interested in attending. What expectations should an athlete have when attending a camp? I think that it’s normal and expected for an athlete to feel nervous when attending a camp; however, it helps to remember that everyone is nervous. I think it’s important to recognize that you will be introduced to new tips and techniques, but that’s what camps are all about. It might be awkward to try, and you might struggle, but trying new things is what makes you better. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would want my camp to have some form of scrimmaging or game situations. I believe it is important because it allows you to improve the intangible qualities that are essential for any athlete such as composure, sportsmanship and quick thinking.

Over the years we’ve asked various coaches and camp directors what they feel the most important things athletes and parents should look for when choosing a camp. Here's what some of the experts think

... When considering a baseball camp ›› 1. Instruction: It’s important to ensure that your child will learn proper fundamentals and technique that is age appropriate. ›› 2. Fun element: Having fun is a must to get players active and excited to continue playing. ›› 3. Accessibility: If you have to drive far, make sure the camp is stellar and fits with your needs for baseball instruction. ›› 4. Coaching staff: Qualified coaches who have experience, the ability to interact with players in a positive manner and communicate concepts to the age group being instructed. ›› 5. Games: Playing games is an important element as it provides a safe environment to try out the new skills they have learned without fear of losing a game. 28

SportStars™

April 25, 2022

... When considering a pitching camp ›› 1. Arm Care, Throwing and Mechanics: You cannot play without an arm. You cannot play at the next level without a strong arm. Do they provide accurate information and education on the biomechanics of throwing? What methods are they using? Video analysis, strength training programs, long toss programs? You do not want to leave the camp with an injury from inadequate coaching or arm care. ›› 2. Ratio of Coaches to Players: Are there a lot of athletes and few coaches? Has the camp invested in its staff making athletic development priority, or will you have limited time with coaches? Individual coaching is how you improve the most. ›› 3. Quality of Coaches: You want to be surrounded with baseball minds that have firsthand and successful track records in the sport. Are they knowledgeable about the game and have a history of developed & successful players? This is key ›› 4. Past Camp Participants: Research and see where former camp attendees have gone to play and how the camp has developed them. Do they have any MLB players or elite amateurs that have attended the camp? ›› 5. Attendance of Coaches and Scouts: The larger the attendance by scouts and coaches the better chance you have to impress. It only takes one scout or coach to get you to that next level.

... When considering a volleyball camp ›› 1. Serving: Becoming an efficient server is critical. ›› 2. Passing: This and serving are the two most important skills. ›› 3. Movement: Footwork, hand-eye coordination and reading the ball are all key. ›› 4. Attacking: Hitting and spiking, which is the most fun thing to do. ›› 5. Chemistry: There has to be team bonding.

... When considering a basketball camp

... When considering to begin diving

›› 1. Fundamentals: Boring? Maybe, but everyone (and I mean everyone) can improve their fundamentals.

It may be advantageous to have some background in gymnastics, martial arts or dance, but anybody can begin diving. Each diver is taught based on their skill level and comfort level. Key ingredients which make a successful diver include strength, grace and courage.

›› 2. Coach-to-player ratio: The fewer players per coach, the better. Any time there’s more than ten players per coach, it’s not a good situation. ›› 3. Adult coach-to-player coach ratio: Many camps rely on high schoolers for instruction, and though they may be good players, they’re not necessarily good teachers. ›› 4. No more than 3 hours a day: No one, not even coaches can concentrate for more than three hours, much less teenagers and below. After two hours really, it’s day care. ›› 5. Plenty of room: The more crowded it is, the noisier it is, and the harder it is to teach and learn.

›› 1. The thrill of jumping and diving into water from heights ranging from 3 to 10 feet — and up to 30 feet if you’re on the diving team. ›› 2. Learning how to properly take off a springboard, both forwards and backwards. Part of this is entering the water head first in a ‘hollow’ position, and what you’re supposed to do underwater after each dive. ›› 3. Using a trampoline to work on fundamental skills that are part of diving, and to prepare you for learning new dives. ›› 4. Using a ‘Bubbleator’ (or ‘Sparging System’), which provides a huge mound of bubbles in front of the diving board, for learning new dives — just in case you happen to land awkwardly on the surface of the pool. ›› 5. Learning to be aware of your body in space (i.e. your proprio-ceptive sense).

finding the

RIGHT FIT

With three decades of experience running camps, National Academy of Athletics founder Aaron Locks offers parents nine steps for choosing the right camp for their kid

S

ummer camps should be an awesome experience for all children. The focus should be on fun, education and being active. After being involved in youth sports camps for more than 30 years, I’m excited to offer these tips. When selecting a summer sports camp, or any summer camp for that matter, it is very important that you do your homework. The following information will be very helpful to parents attempting to find the most engaging programs for the kids to participate in this summer. Many of these topics may seem to be common sense, but as a father of two active kids I know how important it is not to skip any of the steps. 1. TAKE TIME. Figure out your family needs. Is the camp or camps going to serve as day care, instruction or vacation fun? If the parents are working and the kids need a safe place to go, do the times and scheduled weeks fit the needs of your family? Find out the ages of the participants to make sure that the camp is age-appropriate for your child. Many of us parents feel our kids are capable of playing sports when they’re very young. Although that is true on some levels, putting your child in a camp that is not age- appropriate, can cause major challenges. 2. TALK WITH YOUR KIDS. Once you know what you are looking for, it’s a good idea to be sure itʼs something your kids will enjoy. Find out what your child is interested in or what they may want to learn, it can truly help to get buy-in and keep their interest the entire week. Many of us parents like to expand our children’s horizons by offering them the opportunity to try something new. I am a big fan of doing this in the camp environment. That being said, I do believe that a one-day clinic is a much better place to start than a commitment to a five-day camp. 3. THE FAMILY BUDGET. It does no good to find out about expensive camps or extravagant adventures if your family budget will not be able to handle it. Figure out if going to one one-week camp for $600 for is better than going to three different camps at $200 per week. The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” does hold weight here. However, often times Parks and Recreation’s, YMCA’s and other nonprofits offer some pretty cool unit programs at very affordable rates. 4. GET SPECIFIC. Once you have decided the type of camp or camps to register your child for, it is time to sift through the lots of options out there for you to choose from. Not every sport-specific camp is the same. If it is a basketball camp, does it offer competition, instruction or just fun and games. Be sure to ask questions and do your research online to find out specifically what the camp offers. Let’s face it, most of our kids want to go to camp to have fun and compete where we parents might want them

to actually learn some sport-specific and life skills. 5. WHO’S RUNNING THINGS? It is very important to know who will be working with your child. Donʼt be concerned with just the name attached to the camp, but who will be doing the coaching or teaching every day. Find out what the camper-to- coach ratio is. Most quality camps offer a maximum 10 to 1 camper to coach ratio. This allows for maximum teaching and supervision for safety. 6. HISTORY OF THE CAMP. There are many camp companies. Some have been around a short while and others have a longer history. If you are going to put a deposit down or pay for a camp that is two or three months away, be sure the company is reputable and find out their refund policies. You can check with Yelp or other online ratings. Another tip is to check if the camp has a Facebook page. See who is posting information and that will help to give you a better idea of the experiences others have had at the camp. 7. LOCATION. It’s important to make sure that the location of the camp is going to be offered has quality facilities as well as being nearby your home or office. Are the facilities in a good neighborhood? 8. GO TIME. Once you have registered for the camp, you should receive a confirmation which should include all of the equipment or things you will need to bring to camp.

Find out if they provide meals or if there are supplies you may need to purchase separately. This one is personal to me. I remember when I signed my son up for a basketball camp at a local college. On paper it looked like everything would be great. Unfortunately, when we got there, he didn’t get to play in the big gym featured in all of the brochure pictures. He played outdoors half of the time and in the schoolʼs auxiliary gym the rest. Part of the experience my son wanted was the opportunity to play on that big beautiful gym floor. Luckily the staff did a good job, and by the end of the week he ended up having fun at camp. 9. THE DROP OFF. Be sure you feel comfortable when you drop your child off at the camp. Often times the child might be uncomfortable because they are new to the sport or activity, but as the parents, we should always use our gut for judging. Parents will often sit and watch the first 15-20 minutes to make sure things are organized, running smoothly and the child is having a good experience. Be sure to double-check that the camp has your cell phone number or any other emergency contacts. Also be sure that you have a number you can use to reach the camp if needed. Finally, confirm the time for pick-up. Whether you to go to one of the National Academy of Athletics camps or another, I truly hope your child has a safe, fun, educational experience. ✪ Follow Us On Twitter & Instagram, Like Us On Facebook!
