elcome to the 10th Annual Camps & Clinics Resource Guide 2.0 Back on March 20, we found ourselves in a bit of a pickle. Schools, businesses and leagues were all closing as quickly as they could due to the coronavirus breakout. And here we sat with our newest annual NorCal summer camps guide. It was not ideal. We chose to publish it anyway while admitting that some might think it a bit silly to be publishing it with so much of our immediate social future in doubt. However, we also subscribed to the idea that the guide might offer a little hope. That perhaps some of these camps could be something for athletes and families to look forward to when the outbreak slowed. And now it looks like we might be near that time. Shelter-in-place restrictions have begun to loosen throughout the state. The Bay Area, which has held some of the strictest guidelines for re-opening, looks as though it will loosen things considerably in June. We’re not out of the woods at all when it comes to defeating this virus, but maybe we’re starting to catch some light from the end of that tunnel. With that in mind, and the knowledge that some cities and schools are beginning to move forward with heavily modified summer camp plans, we wanted to put together an expanded re-release of our Camps & Clinics Resource Guide. This new expanded version includes updated listings for several of the camps we listed in March, as well as 300 or more additional listings of camps and businesses that may be starting up again soon in some capacity. Every listing has contact info on it to check if the camp is still operating. You can also look for updated listings on our virtual campsite, https://sportstarsmag.com/camps/ These last 11 weeks or so have been tough on all of us. But hopefully the active life that so many of our readers crave may be just around the corner. And if we can help connect them to those activities, even better. ✪

Life Sa NCVA’s Evan Orlando Donates Marrow After Being Marked As A Match Game, set, Be The Match. The majority of blood cancer patients — people with varying forms of leukemia, lymphoma, or sickle cell — don’t have a matching donor in their family. As a result they require a transplant from a stranger in order to survive. Their doctors search the Be The Match registry, looking for a matching donor. Unfortunately, that need arises

every day and approximately 14,000 times every year. The challenge is in finding the perfect “match” for those patients in need of a transplant. This year, NCVA’s very own Evan Orlando was able to help save the life of one of those patients in need. Years prior, Evan joined the registry by filling out some information and swabbing the inside of his cheek. It took roughly ten minutes for Evan to join the registry and years

aver of waiting before he received a call from Be The Match. After being on the registry for years, Evan was matched with an individual across the globe who was in need of a marrow donation. In true hero fashion, Evan did not hesitate to say yes. They scheduled a check-up, to make sure he was physically fit, and organized some tests to ensure he was a perfect match. The donation process includes injections of filgrastim, which helps increase the number of bloodforming cells in the body. Once he was set, Evan was asked if he would be willing to travel to the new transplant center in Boca Raton, Florida, to do the donation. In most cases the donor stays in the state they live in, but occasionally the donor may be asked to fly to a transplant center. The trip is covered by Be The Match, including meals, rental car, and hotel stay for the donor and one other individual to join. Additionally, if an individual misses work it is also covered. The donation is simple. In 80 percent of cases, marrow donations are similar to donating blood. An IV is inserted into the left arm, and not remotely what individuals see on television. Patients are free to watch movies, surf the web or enjoy some rest while blood is being drawn. Evan donated in February. He has no idea who his recipient is, and will be unable to know for at least one year. What is known is, he saved a life. Evan selflessly donated marrow to a stranger in need. When asked if he would donate again should he be needed, he did not hesitate to respond with a simple, “Of course.” Evan continues to be an advocate and encourages others to join the registry by going to Join.bethematch. org/ncva and ordering a swab kit. Ten minutes or less can potentially give someone years to live, and continue to inspire hope. ✪ — Gilbert Martinez for NCVA and Be The Match

TRE MARONIC Bear River-Grass Valley Football Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp was definitely the University Of Wyoming football camp. It was the best ran camp I have ever attended. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? The biggest thing for me was that I always tried to get myself noticed at the camps by being the first one in lines and first one in drills. Coaches loved to see who would step up first. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? The biggest difference between a camp and a practice is that you get to perform and compete in front of coaches and kids you don’t see everyday. Being able to compete against other great players makes it a whole new ball game. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps were the ones where the coaches actually interacted with the players. The coaches actually cared about teaching you the game. The best camps for me were the ones that were not in it for the money, but in it for the game and the players. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? You never know who is watching, but someone always is. Work hard in everything you do at the camps because you never know if someone is watching you or not. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would start with a coaches introduction. So every player knew the coaches or who was helping, that way they would feel more comfortable asking questions. The camps that didn’t do this made it harder for me to go up to coaches to ask questions. When they did the introduction at the start, I felt more comfortable talking to them about the game.

LUCAS COOK Lincoln Wrestling Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp is the FCA Christian camp at UCLA. I found some great people I can call family and strengthened my faith there. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I wish I could have told my younger self to be more productive and go get it and not wait. Wish I could have started the grind a lot earlier. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? What you can gain from a camp is perspective. In the wrestling room at a normal practice you’re used to the flow and the environment and the family around you. At a camp, you’re adapting to a new environment and energy, and overall you want to strive harder to prove yourself. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps I attended all were infectious in the way that everyone around you was good and grinding. It fed off of everyone and each other. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? FCA camp on faith. How to be a humble beast. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I’d want my camp to have sessions off the mat to discuss life, faith and issues. Wrestlers have a life, too. As a camp director I know that and would want the kids to have something to remember off and on the mat. top coaches and trainers from

n today’s society, there is a strong cultural emphasis on elite status as a requirement for athletic success. Whether this status is gained through scholarships or professional participation, it goes consistently in hand with pressuring children towards single-sport training. Parents and coaches are looking to fulfill the 10,000 hour practice requirement perpetuated in the media; they are urged towards early-age, high-intensity training by the popularized triumphs of Tiger Woods and Andre Agassi. The consequence of such promotion is an increase in early sports specialization. “Four years ago, I was trying to find a basketball team for my daughter,” former collegiate All-American and NBA veteran Keith Van Horn wrote for his blog. “She tried out and made one of the top teams in the state (Colorado), but before we agreed to join the team, we had to agree to the coach’s conditions which were for the most part reasonable, except for one. We had to make a one-year commitment and only play for that team. “The coach stated we must focus only on basketball or my daughter will not become as good as she can be.” Early specialization in a single sport has increased tremendously in recent years. Young athletes are participating more in multiple, high-commitment teams of the same sport and pursuing extra training from specialists. While this intensified training might be expected to produce a higher caliber of athlete, in reality it can be mentally and physically damaging. The repetitive microtrauma of specialization leaves athletes vulnerable to overuse injury and burnout as well as can deter athletes from long-term participation in a sport. Alternatively, multi-sport participation has shown to build strong athletic foundations and increase chances of gaining elite status (whilst maintaining enjoyment) in one sport. “I think playing multiple sports can maybe help you in the sport that you’re the best at,” DePaul University women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain said in a video produced by the Positive Coaching Alliance. “You can have different roles on different sports teams.”

“I don’t think you should feel like you’re getting behind, or your child is getting behind, if they don’t specialize.” — DePaul University women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain It is critical for parents and coaches to promote a regimen of diverse athletic activity that accommodates a young athlete’s interests. When physiological and skeletal development are still occurring, the practice of repetitive movements will increase risk of injury. Additionally, serious athletic time commitments can be socially isolating and psychologically stunting. “In youth sports, more isn’t always better. Sometimes it’s just more,” Van Horn wrote, riffing off a quote by screenwriter Barbara Benedek. Young athletes should instead immerse themselves in a variety of sports to attain long-term success. “I don’t think you should feel like you’re getting behind, or your child is getting behind, if they don’t specialize,” Chastain said. “Sometimes that leads to burnout and it may lead to not recognizing that you’re going to be very good at another sport also.” A focus on comprehensive, physical skills rather than specifics, as well as avoidance of excessive time commitments, can prevent burnout and injury and create a healthier lifestyle for the athlete. Below are some key statistics around early sport specialization that were highlighted by Dr. Joe Donahue, a former physician for Stanford Athletics and the San Francisco 49ers. Donahue, a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Leadership Board, used a collection of 2019 reports from professionals Seth Cheatham, Mia Smucny and others. ›› Only one-half of one percent of high school athletes make it to the professional level. ›› Up to 54 percent of all injuries seen in pediatric sports medicine are related to overuse. ›› Young athletes who are highly specialized are 36 percent more likely to suffer a serious overuse injury than those who are not. ›› Focus on one sport can slow critical social development and lead to stunted psychosocial growth. ›› At one Division I university, 88 percent of the athletes had participated in two to three sports as children. Nearly 70 percent delayed sports specialization until the age of 12 or older. ›› As much as 97 percent of professional athletes believed being a multi-sport athlete was beneficial to their success. ✪ Follow Us On Twitter & Instagram, Like Us On Facebook!

n the world of summer camps, baseball, basketball and soccer seem to be the Big Three. Choosing the right camp is likely going to follow the same guidelines no matter which sport you choose. There will always be the essential questions to consider, such as length of camp, cost of camp, coach-to-player ratio and so on. In all sports, the variety of camps will be widespread. There will be competitive camps, noncompetitive camps, skills camps and position-specific camps. But when one boils it all down, Julio Borge may be operating with the most surefire philosophy when it comes to running a camp. “The biggest thing I stress in my camps, and what I’ve learned through the years, is to keep it generic,” said Borge, former Director of Coaching for Pleasant Hill/Martinez-based Heritage Soccer Club. “We want to thoroughly teach the basics — how to pass, how to shoot, how to receive the ball — at the end of the day you simply want solid soccer players.” Camps which show an attention to the basic details make sense. And Borge says he takes it a step beyond. “I want our players to develop a love of the game,” he said. “We make it fun.” Borge and his staff make a point of not just increasing soccer skills knowledge among their campers, but increasing their overall knowledge and appreciation of the game. Regardless of the player’s skill level, if they walk away with a stronger passion for the game of soccer, Borge considers it a win. Borge knows that his camp isn’t the only one out there, though. He realizes many families will be taking the time to consider different camps for their young soccer players. If there’s one element Borge says families should consider most it’s quality of staff. “Make sure the coaches are teaching and instructing their kids, not babysitting” he said. “We have college kids who come out and help us out with all the peripherals so that the only thing our coaches are doing is instructing.” Tom Ginnochio, the Director of Coaching for Brentwood’s Impact Soccer Club with more than 20 years of experience, also makes a good point about coaching staffs creating an environment where “you make sure that kids aren’t bored, but that they also don’t become overly frustrated when they find something challenging.” But maybe you aren’t a family looking to place a young kid in a camp. Perhaps you’re a high school player who is looking at adding to your skill set to take your game to the next level. In that case, it’s best to look for a camp that is going to properly evaluate your game first and then provide honest feedback. The best upper-level camps will be those which can give players a road map to what they need to work on once the camp ends. At that point, it’s not about the camp or clinic anymore. It will be up to the individual to put in the drilling needed to further excel in their sport. ✪ — Chace Bryson, Editor

JACKSON PAVITT CARDINAL NEWMAN-SANTA ROSA FOOTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? The QB Collective camp in Southern California. I gained more knowledge at than camp that I have at any other camp by far, and had a great time competing/ participating. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Focus less on going to a bunch of camps, but instead just working on my own craft and going to fewer camps. ... Instead of going to a bunch of singular college camps, go to two or three mega camps where there are many eyes in one place. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? If camps are done in the right way, it allows you to slow down and focus on certain specific pieces of your skill set without all the additional distraction/action. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps all gave me something to work on at home by the time I was leaving. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? At QB Collective, the quarterbacks all learned a warm-up for arm care, and I use that same warmup before every time I throw the football now. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The one thing I’d want to have at my camp is either have it be a free or low-cost camp, so it is more available to everyone. Many great players aren’t able to attend certain camps because of the expenses that come with it, and they should get that opportunity. experience in a safe learning environmentall on the vibrant UC Berkeley campus. ... When considering a baseball camp ›› 1. Instruction: It’s important to ensure that your child will learn proper fundamentals and technique that is age appropriate. ›› 2. Fun element: Having fun is a must to get players active and excited to continue playing. ›› 3. Accessibility: If you have to drive far, make sure the camp is stellar and fits with your needs for baseball instruction. ›› 4. Coaching staff: Qualified coaches who have experience, the ability to interact with players in a positive manner and communicate concepts to the age group being instructed. ›› 5. Games: Playing games is an important element as it provides a safe environment to try out the new skills they have learned without fear of losing a game. 34

... When considering a pitching camp ›› 1. Arm Care, Throwing and Mechanics: You cannot play without an arm. You cannot play at the next level without a strong arm. Do they provide accurate information and education on the biomechanics of throwing? What methods are they using? Video analysis, strength training programs, long toss programs? You do not want to leave the camp with an injury from inadequate coaching or arm care. ›› 2. Ratio of Coaches to Players: Are there a lot of athletes and few coaches? Has the camp invested in its staff making athletic development priority, or will you have limited time with coaches? Individual coaching is how you improve the most. ›› 3. Quality of Coaches: You want to be surrounded with baseball minds that have firsthand and successful track records in the sport. Are they knowledgeable about the game and have a history of developed & successful players? This is key ›› 4. Past Camp Participants: Research and see where former camp attendees have gone to play and how the camp has developed them. Do they have any MLB players or elite amateurs that have attended the camp? ›› 5. Attendance of Coaches and Scouts: The larger the attendance by scouts and coaches the better chance you have to impress. It only takes one scout or coach to get you to that next level.
... When considering a volleyball camp ›› 1. Serving: Becoming an efficient server is critical. ›› 2. Passing: This and serving are the two most important skills. ›› 3. Movement: Footwork, hand-eye coordination and reading the ball are all key. ›› 4. Attacking: Hitting and spiking, which is the most fun thing to do. ›› 5. Chemistry: There has to be team bonding.

... When considering a basketball camp
... When considering to begin diving
›› 1. Fundamentals: Boring? Maybe, but everyone (and I mean everyone) can improve their fundamentals.
It may be advantageous to have some background in gymnastics, martial arts or dance, but anybody can begin diving. Each diver is taught based on their skill level and comfort level. Key ingredients which make a successful diver include strength, grace and courage.
›› 2. Coach-to-player ratio: The fewer players per coach, the better. Any time there’s more than ten players per coach, it’s not a good situation. ›› 3. Adult coach-to-player coach ratio: Many camps rely on high schoolers for instruction, and though they may be good players, they’re not necessarily good teachers. ›› 4. No more than 3 hours a day: No one, not even coaches can concentrate for more than three hours, much less teenagers and below. After two hours really, it’s day care. ›› 5. Plenty of room: The more crowded it is, the noisier it is, and the harder it is to teach — and learn.
›› 1. The thrill of jumping and diving into water from heights ranging from 3 to 10 feet — and up to 30 feet if you’re on the diving team. ›› 2. Learning how to properly take off a springboard, both forwards and backwards. Part of this is entering the water head first in a ‘hollow’ position, and what you’re supposed to do underwater after each dive. ›› 3. Using a trampoline to work on fundamental skills that are part of diving, and to prepare you for learning new dives. ›› 4. Using a ‘Bubbleator’ (or ‘Sparging System’), which provides a huge mound of bubbles in front of the diving board, for learning new dives — just in case you happen to land awkwardly on the surface of the pool. ›› 5. Learning to be aware of your body in space (i.e. your proprio-ceptive sense).
