Our new Spotter and founder of the iconic Surf Lodge Jayma Cardoso reflects on 15 years of running her beloved destination and her tips for nailing this season at the “end of the world.”

Early in my career, I knew I would love to open a hotel one day, and as I’m from Brazil, it would have to involve a beach, of course. Fast-forward to this summer, and we’re celebrating The Surf Lodge’s 15th anniversary. The entire journey has been nothing short of a fantastic whirlwind ride.

Originally a motel and bar with live music that catered to the town’s local fishermen, the property felt magical to me from the moment I first stepped foot on it. I’m proud of the cultural destination we’ve created, with The Surf Lodge becoming a place to experience art, wellness, fashion, and music, while still maintaining and staying true to its original charm.

Building Surf Lodge has been the experience of a lifetime, filled with some truly unforgettable moments. John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Willie Nelson, and Lauryn Hill have all graced our stage; we’ve also partnered with some of my favorite chefs, including Jean-Georges, Daniela SotoInnes, and Eric Ripert.

This season, I’m looking forward to our Concert Series and welcoming back many of our favorite acts, such as Bob Moses, Donavon Frankenreiter, Lauv, and new ones like Fisher. We’re also returning with The Surf Lodge’s Wellness Series and collaborating with Vita Coco to bring a who’s who of

b Make it to the beach as much as possible. There’s nothing better than heading over to Ditch Plains and enjoying the incredible surf or having a bonfire at night surrounded by your family and friends.

the fitness world to the property in July, with my longtime friend Isaac Boots kicking things off with his TORCH’D workout.

Our in-room Beauty Mini Bar has become a favorite with hotel guests, and each summer I look forward to curating it with amazing products—and it’s complimentary with each weekend stay! Brands this year include Milk Makeup, Biossance, Fekkai, Dr.Jart+, ILIA, Boscia, and Vegamour.

On the food front, we’re now open for brunch daily and have partnered with the amazing team at Two Hands on a delicious menu featuring all its beloved classics. It’s one of my go-to places to have breakfast in the city, and now we get to have them in Montauk!

Summer after summer, I’m so fortunate to see the same faces that have been frequenting the property since the beginning, and I’m so thankful for this community. I look forward to the next 15 years and celebrating with everyone this season! T b Catch as many sunsets as you can. I might be a bit partial, but I think The Surf Lodge is the best place to watch the sunset right over Fort Pond. Montauket and Crow’s Nest also offer amazing views. b Enjoy all things local. Take advantage of the incredible produce that comes from nearby farms and the fresh seafood that arrives straight off the boats in Montauk. Gosman’s Fish Market is my favorite; it has the best selection of seafood. b Explore! To me, Montauk is one of the most magical places in the world, with countless hidden little gems. Climb the buffs along the water’s edge at Shadmoor State Park, stroll the cliff walk at the lighthouse, go trail riding on the beach with Deep Hollow Ranch, and experience all the beauty Montauk has to offer. b Stay till “the end.” Life is short, and summer is even shorter. Take that long weekend, soak in every minute, and stay in Montauk for as long as you can.
