From the EDITOR A feature, more of self-promotion really, from the EDITOR who attended the Rand Air Show - an annual event on the public aviation calendar - and depics the event from the eyes of the public. The Pilot’s Lounge Assignments, off Flickr®. This month’s issue features the “Formations”, and this chapter is fabulous. Also featured is a full-size, hi-res of the “Cover Girl” Meteor by @naemick©. Picking my way through the net found some unusual images. See them in the Historical and the Images chapters. The Editor .......

The Editor has had a number of requests from Aviation Photographers to include within the pages of LCV a portfolio of their works. It’s a good idea, so those of you who wish to see your portfolio here, submit via email to spotlightkid@gmail.com your selected images and a short Biography and we will do the layout for your pictures and words. Also, as an extension to this, we are looking for ‘documentary’ submissions as well. Fancy that.

An extract from “The Real Rand Air Show “ A Visual Documentary by Paul Lindenberg©2009

Images depicted in this publication are Copyright Paul Lindenberg©2009.

Attending Air Shows gives the aviation photograher, or a photographer doing aviation photography, an opportunity to add to their collection of aircraft pictures. The essence of this documentary is to include images which capture the atmosphere of this special Air Show along with renditions in the form of ‘Aviation as Art’. The Rand Airport has a long history, more of a tradition, of public air shows dating back to the 1920’s. Mostly informal events showing off the latest aircraft of the day, such as Tiger Moths, the Cessna models, and military aircraft from the SAAF. Some time in the 1980’s organisers saw the opportunity to commercialise the annual Air Show having analysed the progressive increase in crowd numbers. Today, in the 21st century, commercialisation still dominates and revenues from attendees in excess of 40,000 help to make this spectator sport viable. Nothwithstanding the expenses incurred by participants such as private aircraft owners, sponsored aircraft, armed forces aircraft displays and police, who are all compensated in the form of fuel and landing fee waivers, the profits are still staggering. LCV readers can download the Full Version of “The Real Rand Air Show” from http://gpaulindenberg.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/smallrandairshow.pdf Link to Red Bubble® to view how the images turn out framed : http://www.redbubble.com/people/spotlightkid/art/everything/tags/aviation

The author attended the Rand Air Show with a minimal equipment list and an idea on how the documentary should turn out. Using one camera body (a CANON® EOS 30D) and one lens (on purpose only a CANON® 17-85mm IS USM zoom lens was used). The reason for the one-lens policy was to force the author to see the air show from the crowd’s point of view. The author saw no need to capture the miriad of aircraft on display and in action as his library contained the attending aircraft pictured at many airfields around the country. Having seen the images posted on various web sites showing the Rand Air Show from the professional photographers it became apparent that the authors philosophy pertaining to a documentary was justified. The many images posted on the internet are just that, pictures of aircraft (stunning, technically superb, wonderful compositions) which could have been shot anywhere. A bit of peer pressure or competition from fellow professionals must have prevailed. The dozen or so images in the last section (Selected Renditions) are available as prints in A3 format, printed on Super Gloss Silky exhibition paper. Enquire on spotlightkid@gmail.com for ordering and pricing details. Paul Lindenberg EDITOR le Cirque Volant© eDIGImag® USA

About

The preceeding pages show the Panavision® 2:48:1 ratio, except where it is obviously not that format. The author decided to use this format as most presentations such as this Adobe® PDF file are viewed on computer screens. The Panavision® format is widely used by landscape photographers so as to contain as much detail and visual information as possible and here the author has cropped the standard DSLR ratio to 2.48:1 which only shows the relevent picture information, discarding the top and bottom segments in most cases. All images were captured in RAW format, processed using Adobe® Lightroom©2.1 with the resulting images exported to Adobe®Photoshop©CS3 for final Post-Production. The frame-to-print workflow developed by the author allows speedy renditions to Adobe®PDF file RGB format for printing on digital printers up to a size of A3, and in Adobe® CMYK format for Large Format Printing up to 1100mm at the widest point. Materials, or print media, for the Large Format Printing are varied, from standard super glossy, Matt and special papers such as metalics and Vinyls. All work is carried out by a professional digital print company, Kurtli® contactable via http://www.kurtli.co.za. You can order your prints by opening up a dialogue with the author using the following eMail address : spotlightkid@gmail.com

The author and photographer, Paul Lindenberg, has photographed aviation related subjects since the 1960’s, using 35mm, 2 1/4 still film, and 8mm, 16mm snd 35mm movie pictures, and Broadcast Video formats. Pioneered the first in-flight live video image down-link using UHF technology for broadcast, and specialised still and video mounted work. You might find the visuals disturbing to your sense of order. Be aware that the author uses many techniques to capture aviation visuals - amongst them are ‘blur-on-purpose’, very-slow shutter speeds, over-exposure, under-exposure, crash-zooms, multiple exposures, exacting camera moves during exposure and so on. Post-production sees the use of rendition ‘filters’, a combination of rendition ‘filters’, Faux effects and manipulations, high- and low-contrast and colour settings that go beyond the norms. All the techniques bring to the viewer the most unusual, yet surprising images, which can be printed, mounted and framed. The next part of “The Real Rand Show” are images that have been rendered for print production. Only available on A3 super glossy exhibition paper. Order those you would like and I will post to anywhere in the world. Note : I do not supply frames or post them (too heavy) but what I send out are the physical A3 prints on 300gm exhibition paper, securely wrapped around a protective bubble-wrap core. You pay the shipping as is normal practice. Currently, a number of images have been sold to collectors in Germany, Japan and the UK.

Black Eagle Projects ICE RESCUE This is the story of the rescue of the crew and passengers of the ship the Magdalena Oldendorf stuck in the ice in Antarctica. The Magdalena Oldendorf was tasked to collect Russian Scientists from the Russian Antarctic bases Novolazareskaya and Mirny. As soon as she departed the pack ice surrounded her, and the Captain turned her into the safety of the Muskeg Bukta bay and anchored into the ice. She became completely trapped in the ice and with only fuel and food for 34 days the Captain sent out a distress call. Without being rescued or replenished all would have perished. The South Africans had a wealth of knowledge in the Antarctic summer, however in the winter it was a different matter, and the longer the delay in heading south the less the chance of survival of the crew and scientists. The South African Air Force agreed and quickly got their two Oryx helicopters ready. ( the helicopters had to be refitted with De-icing devices and long range fuel tanks ) The department of environment affairs ship the Agulhas was being serviced as this was her time for maintenance and repairs. The hatches had to be re-installed and the ship prepared. The Agulhas was made ready and when the helicopters arrived on board, she set sail for the Antarctic. The Captain knew that he had to get the Agulhas within 200 miles of the stricken ship so that the helicopters could rescue the crew and Scientists. Through the roughest seas and into the ice the Agulhas got within range and the helicopters flew to the ship knowing that if they went down they would have no chance of survival or rescue. These brave men thought nothing of the danger and in temperatures of as low as minus fifty degrees went to work‌The film is made up of footage taken during the rescue attempt with interviews after the fact and extra footage of the Antarctic taken this year. The film is 36 minutes long. So for all of the helicopter enthusiasts this is helicopter work at the limit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsjcHMIa95I I am very pleased to be able to announce that the Imperial War Museum at Duxford have placed the first order for the Vulcan Returns and Hawker Hunter, Dakota and Shackleton films.

The Vulcan returns will be launched in the UK soon. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=WH_w8zOJ2gU The Silver Falcons new look and the five ship formation has given the Air Force the opportunity to display their capabilities to the public. I have only heard positive commentary and with the leadership of Maj. Scott Ternent “ Falcon I “ the team has impressed us all with their commitment and polished displays. I always enjoy watching the team when they interact with the public, the effect that they have on old and young alike is incredible. Their dedication and friendly manner has influenced many youngsters to start a career in aviation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciC3ilZ_tVI On that note the Red Arrows have announced that Flt Lt Kirsty Moore will join the team from 2010 until 2012.The 31-year-old pilot currently serves with a Tornado squadron based at RAF Marham in Norfolk. The RAF said that Red Arrow team members were picked from "some of the very finest fast-jet pilots", but up until now no woman had made the grade. Every year about 30 fast-jet pilots apply to the Red Arrows, based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, but only the very best are successful. Flight Lieutenant Moore is not the first woman to apply for a place, however she is the first to be selected to join the Arrows.
