From the Editor’s Desk MARCH is...
aunts, wives, and friends and all that encompasses. Once we embody that,
Women’s Empowerment and Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month
we don’t have to ask for justice. We command it without words.
This month is Women’s Empowerment and Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month. Interesting how they’re both recognized in the same month. Women bear the responsibility of birthing and raising earth’s citizens. MS, from an emotional standpoint, bears its root with being over-burdened and under expressed emotionally.
For me Women’s Empowerment means having a circle of friends who are there for one another. Not just to party and socialize, but to help bring out the best in each other. To listen without judgement. To complement without comparison. To show support both silently and out loud, to celebrate and cheer for you when you don’t have the clarity to see the light in yourself.
It is time that women come together, to lighten our load, to uplift one another. There is a shift taking place in our world and women have more opportunities to show up and make a difference. If we can become Vice President of The United States, Coach of the Boston Red Sox, and referee of professional football and basketball games, what else could we do if we were united? It is time to stop dimming your light because of what others may think and feel about you. Yes, this is still considered a man’s world, but let’s face it: we were their mother’s first. Our purpose is to not berate men. Our goal is to except our greatness and position on this planet: as life givers, warriors, lovers, gamechangers, mothers, sisters,
The emotional burden of not having support is connected to the manifestation of Multiple Sclerosis, and that’s why it’s important to me. My mother lived with MS. According to The National MS Society “more than 2.3 million worldwide” have MS. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that attacks the Central Nervous System.” There is no cure for MS… or so they haven’t discovered. All things have a resolution and perhaps, when we come together as women…supportive women, we can reverse the ravages of this disease and the “crabs in the barrel” mentality that has led to illness and women’s separation. Until Now.

JUST COACH JACQUELINE rejection, etc. These Women worked hard to become the leaders they are today and usually when anyone hears their name, it is a recognized name in the household, but wait a minute! Can we shine the Spotlight on Women Leaders who are showing up in corporate America, in the classroom, at home, in the church, in the community, in hospitals, in the blue-collar jobs like a real B.O.S.S. (Being One Smart Sister), on social media, and all the places where she may not be a household name but she’s a Leader who nurtures the culture she’s surrounded by? She’s a Leader because her passion and purpose are aligned with who God created her to be.
The Leader in Today’s Woman Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Symone Sanders, Abby Phillip, Aimee Allison, Lisa Nichols, Shonda Rhimes, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and the list could take up an entire page. These Women made headlines in their outstanding Leadership in 2020 that flourished over into 2021 effortlessly. They set the bar high for what it looks like, how it feels, and what it takes to be a Woman in Leadership today and I couldn’t be prouder to be a woman right now!
The Leader in today’s Woman is spiritual. She is resilient. She has compassion and is fierce at the same time. She is resourceful. She pulls up her sleeves and works with you and for you. Family is a big deal to her, and she expects it to be a big deal to you too. She can speak to Diversity and Inclusion with confidence. She won’t tell you that she has your back and not show up when that time comes. She celebrates you and supports you authentically. She can laugh and have fun with you and will cry and pray with you when she sees your pain. She’s not afraid to pull up another Woman who looks like her because she knows that together, they are stronger and can reach more and more future Women Leaders.
The way African American Women and Women of Color lead today empowers more and more women to push past the barriers of racism, inequality, defeat, lower salaries,

There’s no fluff with her because integrity trumps the decisions she makes. She adapts well to the constant changes in technology and is not afraid to learn and understand how it will help make her better at what she does. Mistakes will come and people will have negative things to say about her and she knows this but the leader in her owns her mistakes and learn what needs to be learned through the mistake. She is empowered to coach and mentor other women to walk them through a day in her shoes. She’s a philanthropist and is always finding ways to pay it forward. She’s not afraid to ask for help because she knows that she cannot do it alone and seeking feedback from other leaders fuels her momentum to keep moving forward in her purpose and greatness. If you’re a Today’s Woman Leader, I applaud you because I know that your passion is to bring future leaders to the front of the line by redefining and building cultures that embrace, encourage, and support African American Women and Women of Color wholeheartedly.

LAQUITA HOGAN celebrate those Partnerships whether newly established or established beforehand. Many statistics and stories often point out the problematic side and how perilous it can be to navigate through it. Being a former partner, I have witnessed what can happen when the right people come together, and the sum total is truly greater than the individual parts.
What is a Partnership? When doing business, partners are personally responsible for the business obligations during that partnership. Meaning that if the partners can't afford to pay creditors or the business fails, the partners are individually accountable to pay for the debts and the creditors can potentially go after personal assets such as bank accounts, cars, and even homes.
To launch or sustain a successful business partnership, you must enter it with the right expectations. Partnerships are like marriages, you expect it to end in divorce: It can be impossible for two or more people to be on the same path forever. When this is known upfront, it becomes the key to planning before and during the progression of the partnership; to ensure its strengths and accomplishments. It goes to say that women can excel and benefit excessively from business partnerships, because of their drive and creative ideas. Countless studies have shown that women embrace participatory leadership and excel in relationship-based management. These qualities are what’s needed in a good partnership.
Let’s not forget about the positive side to partnerships and some of the many benefits. This is Women Empowerment Month, and we need to
Spotlight Sister Magazine| 9
Find a partner who has what you lack.
Here are four ways to overcome a partner’s bad-credit problem:
Don't partner up with someone who's just like you. Equity is an expensive way to make friends.
1. Transfer of Ownership
When entering a partnership, remember the importance of credit.
3. Establish Business Credit
“Choosing a business partner is like choosing a wife or husband?” Money and fear are two things you deal with constantly when running a business— finances bring out the worst in people. A positive personal credit rating will tell you that he or she is good at managing money and is considered creditworthy to lenders. As partners, having good personal credit ratings can benefit your business in many ways. If your business partner has bad credit it can hurt your chances of getting financing, banks require all owners with a 20 percent or greater ownership stake in the business to be included on the application. When one of the applicants has a bad credit rating a lender may deny your credit request.
2. Find a Potential Partner
4. Start a Personal Credit Recovery Plan As women entrepreneurs, we have an inherent advantage in establishing effective partnerships by using the leadership skills so many of us already possess. If your business partner’s bad credit is holding you back, don’t lose hope. There are real solutions and proactive steps as partners to take to build credit. Much Success, Laquita Hogan

No two butterflies are alike. Do you take women on a journey of becoming the unique woman they were meant to be? MN: The only thing in life that we all can count on is change, and change can be beautiful; if we expand our perspective. Like the metamorphosis from caterpillar to Butterfly, every human life is in the process of growth, sometimes, moving through the darkness, other times embracing joy, then bursting out of the cocoon to fly to higher heights. So, yes, I invite every person I work with to choose to go on that kind of journey towards their Bliss—becoming who they are meant to be. Knowing the power of both intention and words, I named my company Butterflies & Bliss to embody the incredible experience someone can have when they trust the process of becoming by getting clarity around their purpose and passion. All of which is the unfolding of what will lead to greater happiness, Bliss! And there is no better reward than inspiring another person to come alive to the beauty of their dreams, showing up unapologetically authentic as they continue to walk the path that they choose. SS: This is women's empowerment month. How can a woman obtain inner bliss?
Spotlight Sister Magazine 14
MN: I know how it is easy to get stuck in life, far short of where you want to be, and whether you feel trapped by tedium or pain, it's hard to keep from despairing that this is all there is and that Bliss is just a myth. I invite women to start with my book “The Magical Guide to Bliss: Daily Key to Unlock Your Dreams, Spirit & Inner Bliss.” Empowering women to take steps towards inner Bliss, the reader can begin to shine a glorious light into the darkness and go on a life-changing journey of self-discovery that helps one recover a sense of meaning and fully realize your passions. I organized the adventure into 366 steps that correspond to one calendar year. Presenting daily quotes and reflections that are paired with magical keys, I challenge the readers to learn the art of seizing the day in January, and by the time December comes, you'll be witnessing aweinspiring magic and miracles! I believe whole-heartedly in an affirmation practice to replace the negative chatter that goes on in all of our minds, many times when we feel down. With my book, “Sparkle & Shine: 108 M.A.N.T.R.A.s to Brighten Your Day and Lighten Your Way,” I offer a handbook that sets out to inspire the reader to embrace their magic within through the practice of M.A.N.T.R.A.s, or reinforced positive affirmations. This book offers a supplement to the wisdom in my guide; it keeps the reader moving forward on their hero's journey with daily tools to help with their amazing transformation. With this, get ready. It's time to manifest the life of your dreams and get inspired to come alive to the wonderful possibilities that await you! I believe that the world is full of wonders and ripe with possibility. In my upcoming
memoir, “Butterfly Awakens: A Memoir of Transformation through Grief,” I share the vulnerability of my own story of becoming a butterfly. “Butterfly Awakens,” depicts my story as I moved through unimaginable grief and sadness watching my beloved mother lost her battle to breast cancer. This tumultuous life experience shifted my world, causing me to question my life choices and opening me up to my soul's calling. I intended to bring the reader along on my journey through a dark night of the soul as I dealt with the grieving process, a toxic work environment, and intense stress that results in depression, anxiety, and an acquired somatic nervous disorder called tinnitus. Through it all, I never gave up, instead of looking for the help I needed to start to heal and find my light. In the end, like the metamorphosis from Caterpillar to Butterfly, this story is a beautiful love letter that honors my mother's legacy, while detailing the awakening of my own. SS: You are a former Homeland Security Attorney. Wow! What an amazing position you held. Was this a hard transition from attorney to writer, success coach, and inspirational speaker? MN: It was an honor to serve my country as an Assistant Chief Counsel with the Department of Homeland Security. For nearly 20- years, in addition to representing the Federal Government in various matters, I also spearheaded the Legal Intern Program, where I hired, trained, supervised, and mentored over 300 law students from different national law schools. My work with the interns, coaching them towards professional and personal success, was the highlight of my tenure there.
Spotlight Sister Magazine 15
As far as the transition from attorney to writer, success coach, and the inspirational speaker is concerned, I am doing the same things I did then, but on a bigger scale. The biggest challenge for me was actually leaping in faith into the entrepreneurial setting, leaving that job's safety and security behind. I was told recently that professional growth and security could not exist together. If you want growth, you will have to get a little or a lot uncomfortable as you jump outside the box. I would say that was a challenge since I had the responsibility of raising my young children at the time. But, with my husband as a partner, albeit reluctant at times, I could bet on myself and see where this new path was going to take me. I also took steps to invest in my education, to get my certification in coaching and other programs around business acumen, and successful speaking. I feel privileged to help others with my books, blogging, speaking, webinars, and coaching. I am grateful that I never gave up on myself as I move forward on my path towards my bliss. SS: Can you share what empowering another woman means to you? Why is it important for women to empower one another? MN: As a lover of words (I speak four languages: English, Spanish, Italian, and French), a reviewer called me a wordsmith, and it was one of the greatest compliments I have ever been given. That being said, I like to look at the etymology of the words that I use. According to the Macmillan Dictionary, the word "Empowerment" comes from the Old French prefix 'en' meaning 'in, into.' The root of 'power' which comes from the early 1300s, means 'ability, strength, might.' So,
empowerment means giving power or authority. To empower another woman gives them the authority to choose the direction they want to go in their lives. Choice is an amazing gift. To offer another woman the space to choose and think about what they want for their future and their legacy is life-changing. Then, to strategize around the next steps that align with their path is just magical. When we empower each other to wake up and become aware of what we can do, then that is an uplifting and magical cycle that can be passed from one generation to the next and the next. Together we do rise. The most amazing thing is to be a part of that kind of transformation in the world that will have a ripple effect beyond what we could ever imagine. SS: Your mantra and affirmation book called Sparkle & Shine, 108 M.A.N.T.R.A.s to Brighten Your Day and Lighten Your Way came out this past October 2020. Can you share on mantra/affirmation that will empower women to never give up on themselves and their dreams? My book Sparkle & Shine is divided into three main parts (Ask, Believe, and Receive), and a final section (Get Ready-What are You Waiting For?) Each part has a section (inspired by Mary Oliver's poem, Instructions for Living a Life: Pay Attention, Be Astonished, Tell All about It) made up of 33 M.A.N.T.R.A.s. There are 108 M.A.N.T.R.A.s in total that will help you to adopt, guide, or start your own magical affirmation practice. In eastern philosophy, the significance of the number 108 is considered to be a sacred number of the wholeness of existence - when you come
Spotlight Sister Magazine 16
to the end of the circle, like a string of Hindu prayer beads called malas, can also look to rosary beads in Christianity, you complete the M.A.N.T.R.A.s and catapult to another level of peace. Like the insights in my first book “The Magical Guide to Bliss,” the M.A.N.T.R.A.s in Sparkle & Shine are written in a modular format. You choose how you would like to read it. If you prefer, you can read it straight through from beginning to end. However, you can read the entries in any order. I chose this modular format to provide a condensed, easily accessible format for the busiest person. As a bonus, there are 11 inspirational letters in text boxes throughout from me to you. I chose this Magical M.A.N.T.R.A. from the Receive Section: Magical M.A.N.T.R.A.: I enjoy the magic of my journey. "A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you can control it." John Steinbeck, American author, 19021968.
There is magic when you release the need to control everything. There is actual freedom when you do what you can and step back to allow the universe to do its thing. When you try to control everything, you may miss out on something greater that awaits you. Just listen at this moment to the whispers of your soul as it calls out "stop, stop, and stop - pay attention." Take a moment to get still on your magical journey to bliss and listen to the inner workings. You can actually experience the magic of what you have set into motion. You are in this moment at the exact place you are meant to be— enjoying the magic of your journey. SS: How can others connect with you? HER GROOVE
Dr. Marcia Sherman
Her Groove “I am passionate about the unity of women and dedicated to assisting them to implement life-changing strategies, so they will experience the freedom to become all that God has purposed them to be.”- Dr. Marcia Sherman Spotlight Sister had the amazing opportunity to interview the Phenomenal Dr. Marcia Sherman. She is the founder and CEO of “HERGROOVE and Intimate Altar Ministries.” She is described as “Vivacious, humble, and a Jesus Girl.” Let’s get to know Dr. Marcia Sherman. SS: You are an amazing powerhouse. Vivacious, Humble, and a Jesus Girl, Counselor, Author, Ordained Minister, Motivational Speaker, Nurse, and Wife. Wow! You are very busy. How do you handle it all? DMS: It most certainly can be challenging. However, I have learned (through trial and error) that
everything I do must be intentional. To handle multiple facets of life, we must learn to strategize, plan accordingly. I handle it by intentionally developing a focused plan, including making sure that I have quality family time. I didn’t always have a plan, and I could definitely tell the difference. It would be madness. Now I know, to handle it all, I must be intentional and prayerful about how, when, and where my time is being spent. SS: During this pandemic, are you still working as a Nurse? I know because of HIPPA laws you can’t speak about what you have been seeing. Can you share if this pandemic changed your view of the world? Thank You for your dedication in providing care for people who are and have faced Covid19. DMS: Yes, I am currently working in my nursing scope of practice serving our country during this pandemic, and by leaps and bounds, it has impacted me greatly! When the pandemic first began, I was only working part-time in nursing so that I could largely dedicate my time to the ministry God has called me to and I almost didn’t jump in to assist! I saw picking up my stethoscope and joining the fight as taking me away from what I wanted to be spending my time doing. But I am so glad that I did! The experience changed me in ways that I will always be grateful for. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. SS: How would you describe yourself? DMS: I would describe myself as a quiet woman who likes to be at home
Spotlight Sister Magazine 19
with family. Although, I never hear others use the word “Quiet” to describe me— that’s funny! SS: Can you share one challenge you have faced and how you overcame it? DMS: Growing up in poverty, I faced a lot of ridicule as a child. Therefore, as an adult, I was preoccupied with what others' opinions and thoughts of me were. You know, do they like me, and do they like what I said? I was always attempting to make sure that I was not the blunt of the joke or that I was accepted. It was the birth of my oldest daughter that became the turning point for me. I now had her tiny little life in my hands and I could no longer focus on my own self-pity, but I had to set my eyes on building something greater than myself- legacy. It took time but eventually through prayer and consistent daily habits of meditating upon God’s Word, I overcame needing the validation of others. SS: This is Women’s Empowerment Month. What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with adversity in her life? I know everyone in some way has been affected in dealing with Covid- 19. A lot of women feel isolated. Uncertain of their future. DMS: Let’s give a big hand clap to women’s empowerment month! I think it’s absolutely beautiful and to my sisters, who may be experiencing difficulties, I say to you, “Do not grow weary while well doing for in due season you shall reap if you faint not.” (Galatians 6:9) Remember, there is
always a solution and there is always a choice to be made. First, choose to believe. Secondly, set a course of action upon that belief, and thirdly, put feet to that Purpose, Action! You may be crying but crying while moving forward doesn’t change the fact that movement is happening!
SS: I have heard that Intimate Altar is amazing. Can you share with our readers more about this? DMS: Oh Wow! I am blessed that you have heard such positive things about IA! Let’s break this down, Intimate means personal, and Altar (within a Biblical context) usually involved sacrifice. So, Intimate Altar is all about dedicating your personal sacrifice, your time, talent, and treasure to focus on the things of God. It is always a wonderful time of fellowship that I host at the beginning of the year as my “First fruit” seed to God to serve his daughters. There is no entrance fee for women to attend. We have now set our hearts on building
Spotlight Sister Magazine 20
Intimate Altar Wellness Center, which would allow us to house women in need of mental health wellness and safety from domestic violence. SS: You also are the founder of HerGroove. I love the name. Can you tell us a little more about HerGroove? DMS: Shout out to #GROOVENATION! HerGroove is all about God’s daughters shining brightly using their gifts, talents, and abilities, or as I would say their “Grooves” It is a marketplace ministry that allows me to minister to women who may not ever walk through the doors of a church. We have now expanded to not only being a resource to women seeking to launch their own business, but a thriving #makeupwithamission philanthropic company that creates beauty products promoting positive affirmations for women. You gotta check out the lipglosses! The shade names are super dope and the colors are #groovetastic! The best part is we donate those resources back to the cause of building the wellness center. It's women helping women! SS: Why is it important to have a relationship with God? What would you share with others who are on the fence about God? DMS: That’s a pretty loaded question! I could spend all day on it. But in essence, having a relationship with God is the most vital thing mankind can possess. It powers you up for a daily living and connects you with created purpose. Isn’t that what we all at some point ask, what am I here for? To the
many who are on the fence about God, (and the numbers are many, statistics show that Christianity is declining in numbers especially with Generation Z) to you I say, why not try it? Give it a real dedicated shot. You have given everything else a try. If it doesn’t transform your life, then so be it. However, I am willing to bank on everything I have, that when yielded in God’s presence, the transformation will happen. SS: What is next for Dr. Marcia Sherman? DMS: After I finish serving our country during this pandemic, I look forward to getting back to my plans to launch an online ministry for women that will include discipleship classes, women’s bible studies, and more. I also look forward to completing plans for the construction of the Intimate Altar Wellness Center for Women. SS: How can others connect with you? DMS: While I am nursing, I am not as present on social media but I ask that everyone out in #groovenation, please be patient. The groove never stops and I will be back sharing soon. Connect with me at @mariciasherman all over social media and definitely visit www.hergroove.com and purchase one of those awesome shades of lip gloss. Your purchase matters to women who need mental health wellness and unable to afford services. Thank you, Dr. Peavy, for the opportunity to share. I see your groove! Dr. Cheryl Peavy

Live Life on The Promise Of IMPACT! Carenda Deonne Your #1 Change Agent
WWW.CARENDADEONNE.COM Spotlight Sister Magazine 28
You have shared that you had two failed marriages and failed business relationships. How did you heal yourself from these relationships?
Carenda Deonne You are known as being vibrant, pulsating and charismatic woman. " In our world today, women place unnecessary pressure on themselves striving to live a life of perfection.” Why do you think women do this? Sometimes as women we think that perfection is the road that leads to open doors. However, perfection can be your greatest downfall. Women can tend to ignore their own red flags because the appearance of having it all together looks better than the opposite. However, can I tell you some of my most tremendous growth came out of faults, failures and pain. Please do not be deceived, perfection is not the answer. However, it’s being able to gracefully more forward in your purpose, even when you mess up.
Yes, I faced going through a second divorce, but not divorcing my purpose. When I launched Carenda Deonne LLC March 15, 2019 my finances were being devoured by debt, my faith was being tested and my greatest fear was in front of me. I was facing insurmountable personal challenges. I was bitter, hurting and wanted to point the finger at everyone else. I remember speaking with a friend and telling them life has given me some hard lemons and I don’t want to make lemonade. My friend said, well don’t, what about TAKING AIM! When they said that to me, a lightning bolt went all through my body. I felt a strength and resilience from God that I truly needed. Those two words, TAKE AIM was the turning point in my life and career. Healing from these relationships was not easy. It’s hard to cultivate forgiveness when you are bitter. I had grandparents who were married over fifty years, but now I am not even forty (at that time) going through divorce number two. It’s easy to be dismissive and blame others for why something didn’t work, but true growth takes place when you can take accountability for your own actions. I was able to heal first by confessing and repenting of my own sins. In doing that the Lord forgave me and cleansed me from all unrighteousness. Second, I leaned on my support system. It is a blessing to have a support system in times of turmoil. They help to not only keep you focus, but water the seed of hope that has buried itself deep into doubt. Last but not least, I connected with a spiritual life coach

if they stay untied you will fall, don’t be your own stumbling block”. When life gives you lemons attempting to discourage you from your dreams and self-worth, that is a great time to find strength while tying your shoes in order to TAKE AIM.
This is Women’s Empowerment month. Can you share a motivational message that will empower women to never give up on themselves and their dreams?
You are a Marketing Consultant. How did you get started in business?
I was born to motivate. My purpose is to empower women that when life gives you lemons do not make lemonade, instead TAKE AIM! I want women to know that they have the faith, forgiveness, and fortitude to throw those lemons back. God created you for the purposes of doing His will. Giving up is equivalent to given up on God’s perfect will for your life. To not live fully in Christ will lead to a disappointed life. In Christ you live, move, and have your being. In Christ not only do you have security, but you also have settlement. When you are facing challenges, suffering and even grief, TAKE AIM by resting in God’s finished work that is yet to be fully revealed. You are exactly where God would have you to be. Sometimes we are like the disciples running in anxiousness to awaken Jesus because of the storms in our lives. After Jesus speaks to His disciples He then speaks to the storm. I know you are ready for God to change a situation in your life, but always remember that before He calms the winds and the waves, He will first have a conversation with you. Please never give up on your dreams and self-worth. If you are ready to listen, the Lord is ready to speak. Take courage, and don’t fret when He speaks to your heart prior to calming your storm. I have a personal quote that I share with my clients. “If your shoes are untied you will trip,

I received my BA in Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology. I have always enjoyed marketing. It allows you to be creative with a strategic plan. Your strategic ideas are intentional in-order to build the gap between your message and your audience. I am purposed to help new start-ups and entrepreneurs to build a sold marketing foundation in-order to grow successfully. The four-week online course I created covers these critical four topics: Marketing 101, Determining, Defining and Discovering Your Target Market, Creating Your Marketing Matrix, and Promotional Strategy and Media Exposure. The course is truly a game changer for anyone’s business, as well as the foundation that every entrepreneur and start up needs to thrive. As an Entrepreneur what challenges have you faced? How did you overcome them? One challenge I had as an entrepreneur is comparing myself to others, as well as complaining when things didn’t go my way. There is nothing wrong with admiring what others do in your industry, but sustainability comes when you are true to yourself and your passion. Complaining gets you nowhere. I decided to see everything as training ground and development. I also started writing a gratitude list daily. Just
Spotlight Sister Magazine 30
Carenda Dadeonne – Cont’d making those tweaks has totally shifted my mindset. What advice would you give women who want to go down the road of Entrepreneurship? The advice that I would give is before you go down the road of Entrepreneurship, you must do three things. 1. See every opportunity as training and development. Do not complain about where you are in the process, it will only stunt your growth. Be faithful and a good steward over the resources and influence you currently have. Every chance you have an opportunity to attend a training or use your gifts and talents, do it. Preparation is so imperative as an entrepreneur. Do not rush the process, trust the process. 2. Pray for wisdom! As an entrepreneur you will attract people and be presented with opportunities. However, you need wisdom to know is this attraction and opportunity God’s will, or a distraction. Wisdom will help keep you calm and focused. You will be able to make decisions not based on emotion, but solid judgement. 3. Prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers. As an entrepreneur you must prosper in your mental and physical health. Entrepreneurship takes energy, commitment and consistency. If you are always tired, fatigued and irritable, that will affect your progress. For me, working out has been a great stress reliver as an entrepreneur. Also reading books, taking walks and not neglecting my hobbies has yielded balance and sustainability. Taking care of yourself also makes you more open and receptive to ideas. You are not going to receive the strength and strategy needed from munching on chips and watching reality TV. You must build your muscle of faith and endurance from the inside out. Some of you
may say, “I don’t have time.” Let me say this if you do not have enough time to invest in your health and well-being, you are too busy. Take inventory so that you can prosper in your mental and physical health. You have mentioned that women are born are born for a purpose and to have a life of impact. What do you say to women who know this but somehow can’t walk in this? For women who know this, but somehow can’t walk in in their purpose, I would encourage them to revisit the bountiful love that God has for them. I am a firm believer that love heals. The word tells us that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son. If someone is reading this and you feel stuck or stagnant, pray and repeat this daily, “Lord, thank you for revealing your love towards me even more this day. Your love gives me strength and shall sustain me even in my weakness. Therefore, I speak to the lion within me to rise up and possess the land”. When you embrace His love, your perspective, mindset and spirit will shift. It is my sincere hope that when you make Jesus the lover of your soul, you shall be able to do all things through Christ that gives you strength. I believe that God should be involved in a woman’s business and personal life. As a minister, can you share your first experience with having a relationship with God and the importance of having a relationship with God? Let me say this, intimacy with God is EVERYTHING! However, it can only be cultivated understanding the power of love that Christ has for you. Listen, I might be in my 40’s now, but I still sing Yes, Jesus Loves Me. From the untimely death of my baby brother, financial hardships, health challenges, two divorces and more I could
Spotlight Sister Magazine 31
Live Life on the Promise of IMPACT say, one thing that I know is that Jesus Loves ME! My first experience with having a relationship with God goes back to when I was in high school. There was a period where I didn’t want to go to church. I had all of these questions about God and became defiant. I started building a relationship with a friend in school and decided I wanted to be a Muslim. I was reading all sorts of books, learning all about the religion on my lunch breaks and even was ready to change my name. I remember my mother saying with boldness, “As for me and this house, we will serve the Lord.” Later in the school year I was in a terrible accident. I fell asleep behind the wheel of the car and crashed into a parked car. My vehicle caught on fire and glass was everywhere. Then the Lord, sent an angel to pull me out of the vehicle, call 911 and call my parents. When helped arrived, I looked around and that person was gone. Then I looked at myself, even in shock, and noticed that I didn’t have neither scratch, bruise nor broken bone. That night when I returned home from the hospital, I got down on my knees and thanked the Lord and dedicated my life to him in my bedroom. Our love relationship, and my intimacy with Christ grew stronger ever since. How can our readers connect with you? came into existence. His words will rule over us the same way on judgement day. So, I ask the question, if we are striving to be in God’s image, why don’t we understand the importance of the words we speak? Or do we?
Andrea Merriman There is Power in the Word “NO” “The tongue has the power of life and death…” (Proverb 18:21 NIV) Do you remember when kids used to get angry with each other and someone would call a name that was derogatory? Do you remember what happened next? In my neighborhood one of the two things that normally happen. One, the other person with hands on her hips and head-shaking would shout…” sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. Then, the tongue would be stuck out and words would continue to fly until a teacher, or someone would break it up. The second scenario would be that the person on the receiving end would have her feelings hurt and she would try to walk away without hearing any more. She had become accustomed to being the center of verbal abuse. She may have listened to it at home or from other kids. Either way, the words were hurting as bad as the sticks and stones. The truth is words do hurt. They hurt is psychologically and eventually they affect our physical well-being. There is power in words. When our Heavenly Father spoke, we
For today, let’s go back to scenario number two with the young lady that wanted to melt into the proverbial woodwork as she is being ridiculed. Often time she grows up and becomes the woman that strives to please everyone. She takes the world on her shoulder and wants to make everyone happy. She feels as if she can make them happy, they will treat her better and not find a reason to sling offensive words her way. In my circle, we call this woman the “People Pleaser.” She goes through life thinking she is doing a good deed. Not realizing the harm, she is doing to herself. This type of living may even land her in toxic relationships over and over. You may recognize this behavior in yourself, or someone you love. If so, know there is a way out. Here are a couple of things you can do that can start you on the way to life ownership and harmony. Taking back ownership of your life is important whether you are dodging words or blows. It starts with the word “NO.” I know you have heard it before, but now, I want to really sit in it and own the word as if you invented it. “NO”. Sentence over. Look in the mirror and practice saying it. Repeat, “No is a complete sentence, I use it for my well-being.” When you learn to stop pushing yourself to make others happy, you will find a calm like never before. This is only the beginning of life ownership, but it is a sweet spot to start with.

VALERIE ALBARDA
Valerie Albarda
My Story of Living with Multiple Sclerosis “Conquering life… one day at a time.” In the inaugural issue of Spotlight Sister Magazine, I shared my reason behind why the magazine was created. My mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was a little girl. This is near and dear to my heart being an advocate of bringing more awareness about MS. March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month. I have the most amazing pleasure of speaking with and interviewing Valerie Albarda. She is newly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and founder of Midlife- A- Go- Go. SS: Can you share with our readers, who is Valerie Albarda? VA: I’m a wife, stepmother, and doggie momma. That’s the quick version. The real Valerie is a woman who embraces her world. I’m a writer, author and podcaster. I created my website,
Midlife-A-Go-Go, in 2015 as a way for me to embrace this stage of life that I’m in: midlife. I’m also a recent TEDxCharlotte speaker. That was an amazing experience that took me outside my comfort zone. I was inspired to apply for TEDx because of Shonda Rhimes. I read her book, “Year of Yes,” and told myself that I was going to say “yes” to things that scared me. Public speaking frightened me, so I challenged myself. TEDxCharlotte plucked me out of the pile of 250 applicants, which was then narrowed down to 48 people who were invited to audition. After the audition, 20 individuals were selected for semifinals, and the final 12 speakers were selected, of which I was one. That accomplishment feels ever sweeter given my recent health diagnosis. I set out to do something and I succeeded. Years ago, my mom likened me to a pit bull, but in a good way. She said, “You get your teeth in something and you don’t let go.” That one compliment shaped the way I view life. I dig into the things that I want. That sort of defines me, I guess. I’m tenacious. SS: You were recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Sometimes, when we receive a diagnosis that’s hard to accept, one can go into denial. When you heard the diagnosis, what was your reaction? How did you feel? VA: Honestly, I was ready for a diagnosis, for any diagnosis, because having that meant that I could finally put the questions to rest and move forward. It wasn’t closure but a
Spotlight Sister Magazine 36
beginning. Getting the diagnosis was just the first of many steps. I was able to think realistically about putting a treatment plan in action instead of the doctor hypothesizing about something that I may or may not have and prescribing a litany of pills in the hopes of alleviating my symptoms. Was I happy to hear, “Valerie, you have multiple sclerosis”? Of course not. But it was the only way to definitively open the door to the rest of my life. SS: You have been diagnosed with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. What does this mean? VA: MS is an autoimmune disease. It affects the brain and spinal cord, and it can cause problems with balance, vision, and muscle control. Essentially, my immune system isn’t being very kind to my body. It’s an attack on the myelin sheath, which is the insulating layer that protects my nerves. My neurologist diagnosed me with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, or SPMS. This stage of MS is marked by persistent symptoms that stop coming and going – also known as relapsing-remitting, which is a stage of MS that comes before SPMS. These symptoms will get steadily worse over time. My symptoms hit full on in June 2020, and I suffered every single day. Once I began infusion therapy, which is when a drug is intravenously administered, I began to notice the intensity of my symptoms improving. The drug that I’m given with the infusion therapy is designed to slow the progression of the disease.
But now there’s a wrinkle in the saga. Recently, I had my first appointment with an MS Specialist, and he believes that I don’t have SPMS but rather Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), which is characterized by flare-ups and attacks when symptoms get worse, followed by remission. I’m in a little bit of limbo now as I’m unsure which stage of MS I’m in. SS: You experienced fatigue, dizziness, and the feeling of being drunk. What did you think was going on with you? VA: I’m a vertigo sufferer from way back. I recall one day in high school I was walking across the football field while eating a peanut butter cookie. Suddenly, I got so dizzy that I just fell to the turf. One minute I was walking and the next I was flat on my back looking up at the sky. That scene lives in my head rent free. Back then, doctors couldn’t figure out what it was, and it wasn’t until around the age of 25 that a doctor pinned the tag “vertigo” on me. I know what vertigo feels like. The feeling of being drunk doesn’t feel like vertigo for me. I know other MS sufferers will say they have vertigo, but it doesn’t feel that way for me. I wasn’t sure what was going on. One day, while walking up the steps in my home, my husband’s printer started making noises in his office. I shifted my eyes to the left, using my peripheral vision without moving my head to see what it was. The wave of dizziness that washed over me was incredible. Knowing that I
Spotlight Sister Magazine 37
have vertigo, and thinking the feeling could be related to that, I immediately went to “Dr. Google.” I made this huge leap from my peripheral vision to making my own diagnosis. When I went back to my primary care doctor, I proudly announced, “I know what’s wrong with me, Dr. O’Leary! I have peripheral vertigo!” Thank goodness for doctors with a sense of humor. He shook his head, smiled with his eyes (I couldn’t see his mouth because of was wearing a mask) and told me to stay off of Dr. Google. He knew that wasn’t the cause of my issues. I guess the moral of this story is to stay away from Dr. Google and stop trying to self-diagnose. SS: You are CEO and Founder of Midlife A-Go-Go, which helps women who thrive during the midlife phase in their lives. How does a woman who is on the path of midlife and be recently diagnosed with a disease cope? What have you learned on your journey? VA: Dealing with a chronic illness for which there is no cure is daunting. There are days when I ask myself, “What did I do to deserve this?” It’s too easy to fall into a pity trap when life gets hard. I honestly try not to. When I do, it’s mostly my husband who sees my real pain. Do I need to show that pain to the world at large? No. I choose what I put out there. I try to raise awareness about MS when and where I can. Sometimes I try to put a positive spin on it. Not the disease itself, but how I cope with it.
Let’s be honest. If you were around someone that constantly complained and bemoaned the state that they were in, would you want to be around that person? Would you want to listen to them? Nobody wants to hear that all the time. There are some people with MS who pride themselves on ‘keeping it real’ and not sugarcoating their condition. They’re unhappy, they’re in pain and they want everyone to know it. And you know what? That’s their right…their prerogative. I don’t wholly subscribe to that. I’m not shooting platitudes from the hip like a gunslinger, but I am taking a less bitter, vitriolic approach to my illness and how I deal with it. I have it. I’ll have it until the day I die. That doesn’t mean I need to be the downer in the room. I’m learning a lot about myself. About my dogged persistence, about my coping skills, about empathy. Like many people, I didn’t know a lot about MS until I was diagnosed. But isn’t that the way? We’re usually blissfully ignorant of something until it’s staring us in the face. So, I’m learning to be more attuned to what others are dealing with and going through. Everybody hurts in at least some small way, whether that’s physiologically or mentally. I believe I’m more compassionate now. We put out what we want in return, you know? SS: You have mentioned that MS has made you become a liar. What do you mean?
Spotlight Sister Magazine 38
VA: MS is an odd disease in that it’s different for each person. MS sufferers are known as snowflakes for that very reason. My MS came in like a beast – my symptoms all hit at the same time. It’s tough, and it hurts. When I’m in pain, which for quite a while was all day, I don’t want to weigh others down with that. When people say, “Hey Valerie, how’re you feeling today?” my first instinct is to go down the litany of reasons that are the source of my pain. “Oh gosh, I’m so nauseated,” “This fatigue is killing me. I can’t concentrate, my body is tired, I can’t get enough rest, and it’s screwing with my head. I hate this,” “Today I fell in front of my house. I don’t know what happened,” blah blah blah. I know people come from a place of love and concern when they ask how I’m doing, but I really don’t want to be the one to sour their day. So, I lie. “I’m fine,” I say. It saves a lot of time and a lot of awkward silence and uneasiness. I never want anyone to feel uncomfortable by my burden. SS: What advice would you share with one who has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis? How does one move forward?
magic pill, but it’s a way to help with overall help. Studies suggest that having a positive outlook can benefit our health – lower blood pressure, reducing stress and so on. Don’t drag the disease around with you wherever you go. Mentally put it on the back burner when you can.

The Rise of COLOR in the White House
Angela Edwards A familiar tear fell from the corner of my eye. I have seen the scene before—one that caused a flood of tears. The date: January 20, 2021. Kamala Devi Harris was just sworn in as the first African American woman Vice President of the United States. I reflected on the day when Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as the President of the United States on January 20, 2009, as his wife, Michelle, stood by and modestly represented “us.” I will not be selfish here and lay claim solely to the African American heritage. Women of all races and creeds celebrated the momentous occasions with great pride—as they should. After all, it was not exclusively the vote of “us” that
placed them in those positions…of POWER. The White House is often referred to as “The People’s House.” It is the same structure built by Black slave hands in 1792 (with a minute mixture of others). As I envision living in that historical time, I can hear the cracks of the whips as “my people” worked tirelessly to hoist each piece into its perfect place. I can see Black faces all around, wiping and cleaning, ensuring everything is pristine…ALL THE TIME. I sigh with despair. History was cruel to “us.” It may have taken some time for “us” to move from slaves to power. It may have
Spotlight Sister Magazine 41
taken some time for others to acknowledge the equality The Constitution grants “us.” The rise to POWER in the White House will go down in history, that’s for sure! If “they” do not want to rewrite the History books for future generations, I will gladly take the lead! “OUR” story must be told—with the truth at the helm! There is a generation of children who will not know a White House without women of color in prominent positions. Former First Lady Michelle and Vice President Kamala are women of color who, in my humble opinion, recognize the value of their positions and all they represent. There is a host of “them” always at the ready to pounce on the slightest misstep. In response to that level of anticipation, we must uplift “our own” in prayer—DAILY. Cover them with the prayers of the righteous that availeth much.
The rise of color in the White House was not only momentous; it was necessary. I imagine that even if Michelle and Kamala’s lots were to be housekeepers in that same location, they would have done so with beaming pride and humility. Just the idea of stepping foot on hallowed ground as a woman of color in today’s largely-male political climate MUST do something to their psyche (it sure does something to mine to see them walking the halls)! I applaud them and thank them for taking that leap of faith in their respective positions. And to think: God forbid something horrific happens to President Joseph R. Biden while he is in office. That would mean Kamala would rise even further. Can you say, “President Kamala Devi Harris”? Wow. Just…wow.

“There’s a Method to the Madness” Well, my sisters, there’s a method to the madness for both. You need to decide in your heart going forth to change how you’re going to transition from one season to another. Decide how you’re going to be diligent in making sure that you don’t overindulge in a season where you cannot get to that gym or go outside to exercise, but decide that no matter what… I’m tire of this March Madness where this is the worst transition. You may say that’s not you on either of those, but I’m sure there’s something that causes a March madness for you.
Dr. Clara Peters “There’s a Method to the Madness” As I come sharing a brief word on this beautiful spring month. The month where one of the colors is “White,” which means… purity. This month is where a lot of madness comes as the season changes from being cold to sunshine, where flowers starts to blossom everywhere, and people seem to become a lot happier (go figure), yet as these changes take place it’s a crazy transition. In this season’s transition for women, it’s putting away the winter clothes and pulling out of the spring clothes or trying to figure out how you are going to lose those winter pounds.
What I want to encourage you on is making sure that when you’re in this transition time that the Method to the Madness should be simply put… I got this and stop overreacting. We as women, sometimes, make big deals out of nothing when we can just breathe and say “There’s a method to the madness” then sit down and logically figure out what we can do. We as nurturers have too much to deal with on a daily basis in order to allow things that we have control over, which will cause us to be stressed. Hypothetically speaking, I’m just going to say that you are mad because you allow the weight to come on due to it being cold and you just weren’t as active as you are supposed. The method to this madness stops today as you say I’m going to change the trajectory of how I allow myself to walk in and out of a season so that the

transition doesn’t cause me to stress. As you decide that this is the last time you have to deal with this madness, yet keep in mind that this can be implemented and adjusted as time and life shifts. No matter what the madness in your life is my sisters, just breathe and say I got this and I will not allow it to dim the lights in my life. I will walk it out until it’s where I want it to be. Remember that you have the power over your life to make sure that all transitions no matter how crazy some may be yet you hold the key. Allow this March Madness to be one that you can say “I got this,” and just allow the flowers to bloom in every area of your life. Blessings and Love, Dr. Clara L Peters

TERESA PERKINS It's Our Time If you've thought about doing something different or changing your style up a bit, think about adding red, orange, or yellow to your décor, the time is now, after all, the rainbow has many colors to choose from. It’s exciting to go shopping for new home decor, accents, and accessories. For me, once the season changes, I bring out all of my favorite jewel-tone colors, I look forward to pulling back the blinds in order to enjoy the scene of the icy roads, snow, and definitely the sun and you can do the same!
Create the Mood Depending on your budget, you can
start with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Take the Sunflower; it’s bold and vibrant, meaning pure thoughts. This would be a great addition to any room; or the Tulip, it’s subtle, colorful, and means a declaration of love. We can ALL use tulips in our lives. Scented candles have evolved into a world of its own. With all the available colors and scents one can definitely set the mood, whether you’re relaxing to some jazz or preparing for a dinner party. Another great addition is colorful tableware or a fresh bowl of fruit. When deciding where to begin, relax because you still have time. For a start, I find that a splash of color and/ or texture on a wall or area always does the trick. I have to say this for my friends on the Florida keys, Jamaica or Cabo, this makes me want to plan a girls trip okay back to what I was saying, whether you have a patio or backyard, make your home a haven. Dust off the patio chairs, add some blue, soft yellow, or blue light bulbs, add some plants and outdoor area rugs, pop in some colorful dishware, make your favorite drink and put your feet up, and look forward to family time, in style, or just simply read a good book. Hanging outdoors for me is a great way to reflect on life. I love to sit outside and listen to a waterfall, the birds chirping, or simply laughing with friends and family. Your patio or

backyard is a wonderful area to entertain. Light up the grill, put on the game and before you know it, you have a party going on. I love living in Texas because we can enjoy the outdoors most of the year, which is a luxury, so don’t forget to enjoy it to the fullest.
Change is Good The fascinating thing is everything comes back full circle in the world of décor. Think of your parent’s furniture, the green and orange lamps, and the yellow shag rugs? If we only knew, we would have put it in storage and kept it all! Here it is again and I never thought I’d see another orange lampshade or a lime green shag rug. It’s all back, I think I will keep my yellow pillows around for a while and enjoy it all.
You Deserve it! It’s time to take care of ourselves and that includes our surroundings. With everything we deal with daily we absolutely must have our most prized possession to be a relaxing and functional space. It’s our sanctuary, we’ve worked hard and should also play hard. Some people invest in their cars, clothes, or shoes, but what about where you sleep? Your bed and home should reflect who you are as an adult.
Your mattress should be upgraded every 7-8 years. We should have matching bedding and pillows. It’s not about what people see on the outside, but more importantly, what we see and experience on a daily basis, and to my empty nesters, Congratulations we made it. Now is the time to do the things we dreamed about. Pull up the old carpet, choose your favorite color to paint, and/ or add some funky wallpaper. It’s okay to invest in yourself, downsize or go big, we put our children and family first, so we can have some fun, after all, it's our home and it’s our time! Remember, decorating your home should be exciting! However, if you need help adding some spice to your home or office, we would be honored to bring your design goals to life.
