elcome to what I like to call “Oh-Ten.” I’m so glad you’re with us, and that you’ve got your copy of Spot’s Top Dog issue, including the directory giving you quick access to the ‘Best in the Biz’ for whatever you may need for your pets this year. Please join us in celebrating our ’09-’10 Top Dogs at Hotel Monaco Thursday Jan. 7, 6-8pm. As with all Spot/Monaco events, everything’s free (though we happily accept donations for the evening’s featured rescue), and your beloved canine companion is welcome! Putting this edition together was exciting and fun. It was interesting to note the changing complexion from last year’s Top Dogs — many new pet-friendly favorites appear in numerous categories this year. Please scan the lineup and get acquainted.
These folks are the Best in the Biz, and you’ll be glad you found them! When you call on one or some of these pros, please let them know you found them in the Top Dog directory — they’ll appreciate it! The Top Dog directory has its own cover, so it’s built to pull apart. After you’ve perused your customary January Spot, just tear off the outside section and toss your Top Dog directory in the murphy drawer so it’s there when you need it, all year long.
Attention Cover Models
We’d planned to feature our winning Cover Model this month, along with an inside spread of all the beauties who entered Spot’s Cover Model Search in April. The holiday shuffle necessitated a change, so please look for the models in February, our annual issue that’s all about love.

This year is starting off with a Thank you so much for your support, your friendship, your ideas and your input, always. Cheers! Here’s to a wonderful Oh-Ten together!

2-month-old pet foood bank chalks up a GREAT year The Pongo Fund Pet Food Bank, which serves anyone who needs help feeding their pet(s), will be open noon to 3pm Sundays Jan. 10 and 24 at 910 NE MLK Jr Blvd, near the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. After opening Nov. 8, The Pongo Fund provided more than 25,000 meals for 700 companion pets in November, and more than 7000 meals for 269 companion pets on a single day in December. The Oregon Spay/Neuter Fund was on site Dec. 13, finding overwhelming interest for its services. Over 30 pets were enrolled in under three hours. A Buy a Bag for Pongo Pet Food Drive conducted at Howliday Inn in December was a success, with more than 83 bags of Canidae purchased in the first week alone. Finally, a $5,000 grant from the Hedinger Family Foundation was leveraged into more than $30,000 of high-quality Canidae dog food. To learn more about The Pongo Pet Food Bank or related efforts, visit www.thepongofund.org.
OHS wraps ‘09 with a bang The public’s response to two huge animal rescues mid last month was “nothing short of overwhelming,” say the folks at the Oregon Humane Society. Following two rescues that brought nearly 200 animals to OHS, the shelter’s storage areas were overflowing with donated pet food, and shelter staff were working overtime to keep pace with adoptions of the previously neglected dogs. Soon after the rescued animals from the Harney County and Tillamook rescues were made available to the public, OHS experienced the largest adoption weekend in the history of the 141-year-old nonprofit. “The public’s response was incredible,” says Sharon Harmon, OHS Executive Director. “The community showed its concern and compassion for the rescued animals in our care.” The public adopted 224 animals Dec. 11-13, twice the number usually adopted and well above the previous record of 192 pets who went home over a similar three-day period in Nov. 2007. And while dozens of the rescued dogs from Harney County and Tillamook found new homes, so did 86 cats and kittens, seven rabbits, four birds and one Guinea pig. “I think people understood that our shelter was strained to capacity,” says Harmon, “and they decided this was the right time to bring a new friend into their family.”
6 SPOT MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2010
In addition to taking animals home over the weekend, people dropped off record donations — so much that OHS has asked not to receive more donations of dog food, towels or shredded paper. “We are grateful for all the donations so far, as we rely entirely on private contributions for everything we do here,” says Harmon. The two rescues could cost OHS, which gets no support from national humane organizations, over $150,000. OHS still does need large dog crates, dog toys, wet cat food, laundry soap, bleach and monetary donations. Some of the dogs from Tillamook and Harney County were still available at presstime, and of course there are other lovebugs ready for forever homes, including cats, birds, rabbits, ferrets and others. CAT needs help With families struggling to make ends meet, Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood reports being overwhelmed with homeless cats and kittens, including pet cats who have been with families for years. So far this year, 3,021 CAT kitties have found new families. Also, many families with cats are utilizing CAT’s Cat Food Bank, which provides free cat food monthly. A surge in need last April has not slowed to date. After the December distribution day only six pounds of adult cat food remained on the shelves. The need is great and you can help; details catadoptionteam.org.
Willamette Humane opens low-cost spay/neuter clinic After more than four years of preparing, planning and fundraising, construction is complete on the region’s first high-volume, low-cost spay & neuter clinic. WHS’s Spay & Neuter Clinic officially opens Jan. 11, offering low-cost spay/neuter services to all. The goal of the clinic is to reduce the number of stray and unwanted animals and, ultimately, the number of animals entering shelters. Currently, WHS receives over 10,000 animals each year. During “kitten season” (the spring/summer months), WHS takes in litter after litter of kittens — sometimes as many as 70 cats and kittens in a single day. There simply aren’t enough homes to absorb them all. Research shows that in areas where low-cost spay & neuter clinics exist, euthanasia and shelter intake rates drop dramatically. The clinic, located at the front of the WHS shelter in Salem, is expected to perform up to
7,500 surgeries annually. All adoptable pets from WHS will be sterilized on site, and low-cost services will be available to partner rescue organizations and the public. The general public will pay $35 to neuter a male cat and $55 to spay a female. Male dogs will be neutered for $58; female dogs will be spayed for $74. Other services — including vaccinations, de-worming and microchips — will be available for an additional cost at the time of surgery. Contributions from over 1,000 donors made the clinic possible. A recent $66,000 grant from PetSmart Charities will help cover much of the costs for equipment and medical supplies. “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many people who helped make this dream a reality,” says WHS Executive Director Susan Carey. “Together, we are taking the proactive step to combat pet overpopulation at its source and put an end to the needless euthanasia of adoptable animals in our community.” WHS will host a Grand Opening/Open House Friday, Jan. 15, 4-7pm. An official ribbon cutting will take place at 4. The public is invited to drop by to tour the new facilities, meet the staff and enjoy light refreshments. To learn more about the clinic or to schedule a spay or neuter appointment, go to willamettehumane.org/ clinic or call 503-480-SPAY.
42” big screen TV now through Jan. 30 for $10/ticket. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Raffle tickets are available at CAT’s shelter, 14175 SW Galbreath Dr. in Sherwood, or by mail order form (available at catadptionteam.org). Mailin raffle tickets must be postmarked by Jan. 25.

Now’s the time to spay or neuter fertile cats, before springtime’s bounty of unwanted kittens. Thanks to the Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood, cost shouldn’t be a hindrance during its annual Feline Fix-a-Thon, happening this month and next. Qualified families can have a female spayed for $20 and a male neutered for $10. Over 22,000 cats were euthanized in shelters across Oregon in 2008 (11,404 in the Portland area alone). Spaying/ neutering cats is the best way to prevent these lost lives. For details or to schedule an appointment, call 503-925-8903 or visit catadoptionteam.org. Call early; appointments fill fast.

Cosponsored by The Humane Society of the United States and OHS, the HSUS Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) is the premier basic training for animal disaster responders nationwide. The 3-day course equips participants for disaster situations and provides the skills required to be an effective emergency animal relief responder. After completing DART, graduates have a basic understanding of disaster response for animals and are in a position to help develop DART teams in their own communities. After years of budget shortfalls, Dovelewis closed its SE Hospital near Mall 205 Dec. 11. Spokespeople at Dove say while the satellite facility has closed, “our commitment and dedication to the animal-loving community and veterinary professionals remains the same” and that the organization will continue serving the greater Portland area at its hospital at 1945 NW Pettygrove in Portland, which staffs specialists and the most boardcertified doctors and vet techs in the state. In the coming months, Dove hopes to finalize plans to expand its emergency and critical care services to other markets in the state that are currently underserved. Details dovelewis.org.

Rescue me! Mister
Mister is ‘just right’ — pet him and he delivers the perfect cat purr (not too loud, not too soft . . . just right). He is affectionate, loves to be held, loves to get kitty kisses, and really enjoys relaxing in your arms. He likes a little alone time too (just the right amount). Come and meet this great ginger fellow at CAT’s shelter, 14175 SW Galbreath Dr. in Sherwood. Details 503-9258903 or catadoptionteam.org.
Butternut Butternut is an adorable kitten who really loves people. And she enjoys being with other cats too. She’s affectionate, gentle, mellow, and fun to be around. Just watching her bat at a feather wand or play with a cat toy is a crackup! Come and meet her at CAT’s Sherwood shelter, or call 503-925-8903 or visit catadoptionteam.org.
Gypsy Please don’t over look me. I am a serious but loyal girl looking for a home that is forever. I came to the shelter last fall and my family has not come to look for me! I hope my next home is more diligent than the last. Let’s see, what can I say about me? Well, I am beautiful with a sleek and shiny brindle coat, I need a home with NO CATS or small animals, and I think I would just prefer to be the only pet. But if you have a social adult male dog, talk to a counselor. I can climb a 6-ft chain-link fence. If you are an active and breed-savvy single person, couple, or family, ask to meet me today!! I’m ready to come home! I am 54 lbs and about 4 years old. I’m a featured dog on Comcast Cable TV/On Demand/Local/ Pet Adoptions/MCAS Dogs.

Portland-area Mountain Dogs meet up at Fernhill Park at 10am the last Saturday of the month. Join the fun! Meet north of the intersection of NE 42nd & Killingsworth. Questions? Email ldmiller@aracnet.com. Larry Miller, Portland
Vegas is a 3-year-old Great Dane who is not only an incredible family pet, she competes in agility and is quickly moving up the levels in CPE and will be competing at the Rose City Classic. Of the breed commonly known as the gentle giant, Vegas quickly captures the hearts of all who meet her. Kennedy Morgan, Portland
Meet Buddy
Buddy was ‘spotted’ at a recent Thurston High School football game in Springfield, OR. During a pouring-down rain, Buddy peeked out from under Lisa’s rain poncho to watch his AJ play football. Buddy loves to play with Art (Dad) and the boys, but cuddle time is saved for Lisa, his favorite. Buddy is 71⁄2, mostly Poodle, but mixed with Chihuahua and Pomeranian. He loves to go anywhere in the car, especially to his grandparents’ in the country — he gets excited several miles before arrival. Buddy also loves camping and is a great tent camper. He has one doggie friend he likes to swim with. A bit of a daredevil, one day during a car ride Buddy saw something that interested him and jumped right out the window! Marnie McCammon, Springfield
Meet BonniBelle and Willie
BonniBelle (black) is a rescue from the Seattle Pure Bred Dog Rescue (www.spdrdogs.org). She came from the Scottie/Westie rescue; the organization handles many breeds. BonniBelle was given up by a military family at Fort Lewis. She is 3 and definitely the boss of these two. Willie (William Wallace) is 10 months. He was originally purchased from a breeder in Bellevue and was then returned because he was “too big.” We were contacted to foster him . . . and couldn’t let him go once we met him! They love to ride in the car and lay on the couch with their mommy. Jenny Kamprath, Portland

he first thing Gordon Landon noticed walking through the doors of the Oregon Humane Society was how clean it was. “It was orderly, calm, very well-managed and maintained; a comfortable atmosphere for clients, volunteers and animals.” Gordon and Darin Barry, owners of The Brews Brothers coffee shop in NE Portland, adopted Isabella Rosselleni, a Snowshoe Siamese cat (featured in Reader Spotlight, Spot Dec. 09) from OHS over a month ago. They immediately fell in love with the feline who Darin had first noticed actually “hugging” a volunteer in one of the spacious cat colony rooms just off the OHS lobby. These captivating rooms are something to see. One in particular, created by a volunteer, replicates a cozy living room complete with mock fireplace (very realistic!) and ledges. OHS “did not have the heartbreak scenario you think of for an animal shelter,” says Gordon. The Barry brothers say their adoption experience was also positive. “Way easy and super accommodating,” says Gordon. Experiences like this happen countless times each day at OHS. It’s no wonder they chalked up a grand-slam win in Spot’s 2009 Top-Dog Awards — not only in the Rescue/Shelter category, but in Adoption as well. In fact, OHS won in SEVEN

categories, placing 1st in Adoption, Rescue/Shelter, Pet Care Products & Pet Event; 2nd in Cremation/Memorial and Neighborhood Pet Supply; and third for Training. A great showing for the oldest humane society in the west and third oldest in the country. OHS was founded by Dr. Thomas Lamb Eliot over 141 years ago after he witnessed the heartless beating of a carriage horse in downtown Portland. The doctor took immediate action, creating one of the first humane animal welfare organizations. “The Society,” as it was called, initially focused was on the plight of draft animals, but in a few short years was advocating for the safety and well-being of companion animals and children. The agency served as the official state child protection agency from 1881-1933. Improving the lot of animals involved teaching humans respect and empathy, and this facet was added to the mission statement in 1882. In 1918, OHS purchased the acreage on Columbia Boulevard in Portland where it resides today. The original building was destroyed by fire, and the new facility built in 1939 housed the shelter for 60 years. By the nineties, the organization and the community had outgrown its facilities. In June 2000, the shelter we know today opened its doors. It was about this time OHS embraced an adoption process based on trust rather than suspicion of prospective adopters, thus improving adoption rates.
OHS adoption figures are available to the public online and at the shelter. “We want to be totally transparent to the community we serve,” says Barbara Baugnon, OHS Marketing/ Public Relations Director. OHS won in SEVEN OHS’s adopcategories, placing 1st tion rates are typically three in Adoption, Rescue/ to four times Shelter, Pet Care Products higher than the national & Pet Event; 2nd in average, all Cremation/Memorial and the more Neighborhood Pet Supply; remarkable considering and third for Training. this includes animals transferred from other agencies or adoption” says Baugnon, adding, “pets stay at OHS until we can find rescued in neglect cases. The “save rates” (adoptions plus them a home.” The shelter can accommodate transfers to other humane groups and reunions with owners) are also over 200 cats and more than 100 stellar: 99% for dogs, 95% for cats dogs in its state-of-the-art environand 92% for other small animals. ment. A major undertaking putting OHS on the national radar in September 2007 was the opening of its Animal Medical and Learning Center, adjoined to the shelter. Involving a partnership with Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine, this is the first veterinary teaching hospital connected to a shelter providing 24-hour care for its animals. The alliance gives veterinary students hands-on experience in their field of study while providing muchneeded care for shelter animals. Students complete a two-week residency on a rotating basis, living in dorms above the 4,000 squarefoot medical center. Prior to its existence, staff had to transport sick or injured animals to generous veterinarians who donated their services. “All spay and neuters are now done in-house,” says Baugnon. “Eight-thousand so far this year.” The center has room to expand youth education. A “best-kept secret,” according to Baugnon, is the shelter’s Animal Behavior Training programs, which help dogs become good pets, reducing their chances of being returned to shelter care. The agency’s 3rd place Top Dog win in Training is not surprising when you consider all OHS offers the community. Help is available online, by phone and in person, and the training department conducts a wide range of classes and workshops. “We like to think outside the box when it comes to dealing with people’s schedules and their pets’ issues,” says Tanya Roberts, OHS Shelter Behavior Specialist. “You can pick and choose what works best for your situation.” All three staff trainers and one assistant trainer believe that rewards-based training and educat-

Some classes are free, some are not. Discounts are available to new adoptive families, who are advised of class offerings. “We have worked with so many animals, we know what works, what the triggers are,” says Roberts. Classes and workshops change, with offerings added regularly. “It’s all community-based,” says Roberts. “The behavior help line is big,” says Sue Lay, OHS Training & Behavior Facility Coordinator. She estimates OHS receives five to seven calls and numerous e-mails every day. “We support everyone,” Lay says. Of course a vital element in any successful organization is its people, and OHS undoubtedly is hitting the high notes these days thanks to the more than 1,000 compassionate people lending their time, energy, talents and love of animals. “Volunteer retention is high,” says Baugnon. Another indicator of a thriving organization.
From the huge roster of pet-related events offered in and around Portland, the OHS Doggie Dash was voted #1 in a landslide by Spot readers. The 2009 event broke all records for attendance . . . over 3,000 dogs and 5,500 people turned out for the festivities last May. Baugnon says, “Doggie Dash is a great event even if you don’t own a dog. You can view hundreds of different breeds all in one area.” While some of their wins are not surprising, the awards for Pet Care & Neighborhood Pet Supply are firsts for OHS. Clearly Spot readers have discovered OHS’s Best Friends Corner at the shelter, which is filled with a great assortment of reasonably-priced products. “Sit. Stay. Good Dog,” aptly named for its location in OHS’s neighboring Learning Center, specializes in the latest training products at competitive prices and boasts a knowledgeable, friendly staff. “We have the toughest critics in the land when it comes to pet products,” says Baugnon. “With 10,000 pets critiquing the products we know what works.” Better still, all proceeds from the retail shops benefit the animals at OHS.

ogs — and their owners – keep digging Dogs Dig It, a doggy daycare and boarding facility in inner SE Portland owned by Ellie Davis and Janel Hanson. In 2008 Davis and Hanson took home a slew of awards (three 1st-place nods). This year they shine again as Top Dogs, winning 1st in Doggy Daycare and Pet Transportation, 2nd in Boarding, and 3rd in Playgroups/Playspaces. The aptly named daycare began as an idea Hanson had while working as a swimming instructor in 2000. At that time she and Davis didn’t have the money to launch a new business, so she focused on research. “I think it was a good thing,” says Hanson now, looking back. For years Hanson taught swimming and prepared for the day she’d have canine clients. In addition to a good location and a low dog to staff ratio, Hanson wanted a daycare where dogs had a positive connection with humans. “Training style was a huge thing,” says Hanson. “Positive reinforcement was the biggest thing I wanted to focus on.” Before she could put her well-laid plans into effect, Hansen and Davis needed to find the right facilities. In 2006 they did. It was close, off MLK,

and had plenty of space. Then the deal fell through. “Discouraged” is how Hanson felt about the lost opportunity. But while on a drive the same day they found a promising old shop building on 12th & SE Salmon. It wasn’t quite love at first site. “It was a grease pit,” says Hanson. The prior tenants were chain link fence manufacturers. The ones before that were bus mechanics. Hanson vividly remembers patrolling the yard with a magnet for three months, picking up galvanized steel chain link pieces. For three weeks after they opened the summer of 2006, Hanson says she had only one customer, Lilly. But in just three months they had enough customers to pay the bills. “Now we have customers from everywhere,” says Hanson. They even have a Beagle that comes from Washington twice a week. The staff at Dogs Dig It sees 80 to 100 dogs a day. Hanson’s absolute limit is 1 staff member per 20 dogs, and there’s no multitasking for staff on dog-watching duty – their sole job is to monitor behavior. In fact, Hanson trusts her staff so much she installed web cams soon after opening. “It’s addicting,” she says. Also, after trying bare asphalt (tough on doggy paws) and Astroturf (dogs like to
“The best part about this job is the dogs.” — Janel Hanson

Walking about in the play area you forget it’s not real grass. Staff sprays it down nightly to wash away any doggy deposits that can’t be bagged up. While examining the lawn I was greeted by a tumultuous – well-behaved – pack of 10plus dogs. After ascertaining that I wasn’t a threat and also wasn’t concealing treats in my pocket, they focused on Hanson, who is clearly at ease with the jostling and nudging. For me, accustomed to hanging out with a much smaller pack of four, it was a little daunting. When I asked her about the experience of stepping in to “their” world each day (the fence, play structure, grass and treats might be “ours” but it’s definitely their world), she said, “That experience doesn’t get old.” “The best part about this job is the dogs,” she continued. “How can you be in a bad mood? They’re amazing.” When asked about her success these past 31⁄2 years, Hanson recounts the webcams, the pro sport grass, and the fact that
they have the largest doggy daycare in the city. “We have great customers,” Hanson says. Their policy at Dogs Dig It, she says, is, “We’d be happy to do it, you just have to ask.” Hanson went thoughtful when asked about her plans for the future. Her customers want her to branch out to other areas, she says, especially the west side. But Hanson sounds hesitant. “I like to make sure everything is going 110% here.” To find out if your dog might dig it, check them out here: 1132 SE Salmon in Portland, on the web at www.DogsDigIt.net, call 503-236-8222, or follow on Twitter @dogsdigit.

Meet your Top Groomer . . . of dogs and cats Jake Faris • Spot Magazine
L
ast fall, about the time the Spot crew was busy counting Top Dog ballots, Jeff Slaughter was marking his 31st anniversary as a dog groomer. Answering a Help Wanted ad in Dog Butler Magazine at age 15, the future owner of The Muttley Crew couldn’t have imagined the success and adventures to come. After learning the ropes under a master groomer in Aspen, CO who specialized in Standard Poodles, Slaughter opened his first shop at age 18 in Denver. How did he get to Oregon? Simple, Jeff explains,
“I got to Oregon via Florida.” In the late ‘80s he closed up his Colorado establishment to do some consulting in Key West.

No problem!”
22 SPOT MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2010
A friend kept telling him how wonderful Portland was and that he should leave the tropical weather and ocean for the beautiful Pacific Northwest. After an exploratory visit in 1989, Slaughter did just that. He landed a grooming job in Cedar Mill and eventually opened his own shop – The Pet Spa – in Cedar Hills Mall. Construction at the mall upset his furry customers so he moved into a 350 squarefoot space he leased from Pet Barn. After 12 years he realized the business was outgrowing the space. “We were just overwhelmed,” says Slaughter. Customers were also lobbying for daycare facilities. Just blocks away, Slaughter found an abandoned bakery and decided to make his move.

“I’ve been grooming in the area for 20 years —
some customers are on their fourth or fifth dog with us.” — Jeff Slaughter
Muttley Crew, Slaughter’s fifth independently-owned grooming establishment, opened in 2006. The old former bakery now has room for grooming, daycare, bathing, and retail space. “I’ve been grooming in the area for 20 years — some customers are on their fourth or fifth dog with us,” says Slaughter. A Certified Master Groomer (CMG), Slaughter is not only proud of the work he does, he’s also proud of his hand-picked staff. His lead groomer, Martine Rohfling, has worked with him for 12 years — since she graduated from grooming school. Lori Goudy, a CMG, has 20+ years’ grooming experience and loves working on Spaniels. While each groomer has their favorite or specialty breed, Slaughter stresses that they are trans-breed beauticians. Do you have a dog whose coat makes them look “big-boned?” Slaughter has a solution: “A slenderizing haircut? No problem!” While it’s easy to see why The Muttley Crew’s talented staff has contributed to its following (Top Dog Award winner: 1st Grooming, 1st Cat Grooming, 2nd Dog Spa), thanks to Slaughter’s unique “cageless” grooming practice, even the dogs enjoy their beauty sessions. Slaughter explains, “The dogs — they seem to be more at ease.” Walking through the grooming and bathing area on a busy
Saturday I realized Slaughter was right. A roving pack of happy pups played, patrolled and policed themselves. “We’ve had dogs that were terrified to go to the groomers,” says Slaughter, “but when a dog starts acting anxious, the [other] dogs seem to say, ‘Hey, you’re not supposed to act that way.’” Slaughter stresses that owners can request their dog be kenneled, and that all canine customers must be fixed, vaccinated and well-tempered. While the diversification into retail (100% grain-free dry & raw food), pet massage, and the 2900 square-feet of daycare space is impressive, perhaps Muttley Crew’s most impressive service is cat grooming. This year the ’Crew ranked “Top Dog” in Cat Grooming. Slaughter, who is the only groomer sufficiently trained — or perhaps sufficiently crazy — to take on kitty customers, says cat grooming is popular, especially during the summer, when he might see six to seven cats on Saturdays. With their parchment-like skin and ninja-like quickness, grooming cats can be an art, says Slaughter. Still, he says, “At times I would rather groom cats than dogs.” Contact Muttley Crew at 503-626-8212, 1-888-MUTTLEY or info@themuttleycrew.com. Or check out www.TheMuttleyCrew.com.

Claim to Fame/Signature Product or Service My claim to fame is the clinic of my dreams — Mt. Tabor Veterinary Care! With the creation of my beautiful practice I now have the structure and environment to feature my style of medicine. I love getting down on the carpeted floor with my patients, giving out lots of cookies and making them feel comfortable. I also believe that our clients are the most important part of our medical team — they are the ones who know their pets better than anyone else, speak for them, and carry out medical treatments at home. We provide them with the education and the expertise to help them make the best decisions for their pets, as well as coach and support them through treatment.
