Philosophy/Mission: Lead the Pack, it’s what we do! It’s our mission. Dogs love the pack, they find joy in the pack, and when they spend the day with us — their Tails R Waggin’! At our doggy daycare, we don’t just socialize your dog and play a few games, we introduce your dog to the pack. And whether it is a pack of two (you and your dog) or 20 — to a dog, pack means family. Pack family and Alpha leaders (our human staff ) is what makes our daycare different. The pack defines the dog experience - always has,

always will. Come experience the pack life at Tails R Waggin’ and see how leading the pack makes all the difference, not just for your dog, but for you — your dog’s pack leader.

Claim to Fame/Signature Product or Service: A dog’s pure joy! The dogs love the pack and increasingly in our society the dogs don’t get to run with the pack. Dogs find comfort and security once they know their place in their natural dog pack. This is what we provide at Tails R Waggin’ . . . pack training. When they know comfort and security and they are among their friends, this equals “pure dog joy.”

D IT’S THE “YOUR CAT IS OUR CAT” PHILOSOPHY that earned Mittens Motel First Place in both the Cat Boarding and Cat Daycare categories this year. Three years in business, owners Brandy Slack and Denise Struzan emphasize comfort, kindness and care for their kitty clients, giving their cat owners peace of mind. Boarding cats with cats is much less stressful than placing them with dogs or other animals as some facilities do. Spacious custom rooms with windows, window sills to lie on, hiding spots, and even privacy curtains make Mittens Motel the cat’s meow. Special care and accommodations are available for senior or ill kitties — whether they stay for a week or just a day while catunfriendly things — like home repairs or service calls — are happening at home. Perhaps the most unique and winning feature at Mittens is that once acclimated, cats are free to mix and mingle in a common area if they like, returning to their rooms in the evening. And, yes, assures Slack: they know which room is theirs. Purrfect. – Gail Krueger

CARE AND COMMITMENT TO PET HEALTH MIKE AND CHRISTINE MALLAR, owners of Green Dog Pet Supply in Portland, take pride in keeping their customers’ pets healthy. Mike grins broadly when telling of recently helping a dog owner change her dog’s diet. Turning digestive disasters into more healthy, happy pets is what keeps the Mallars going, and a big reason NW pet lovers voted Green Dog this year’s Top Dog Neighborhood Pet Supply AND Holistic Merchant. Mike says it’s like a lightbulb moment when he’s able to help people realize the connection between their pets’ food and their health, and that food value is much more than a price point. Mallar loves knowing he’s making a difference. He says seeing a pet’s improved appearance and the owner’s satisfaction makes the job of running a neighborhood business worth all the hard work. Personal service, care and commitment to health for pet cats and dogs are the Mallars’ mantra. Add to that their passion for local products — from handmade cat toys to pottery dog treat jars and special treats for chickens — and you get a shop that wears the label “neighborhood” — not to mention “Top Dog” — proudly. – Gail Krueger Top Dog Directory 2013 | D 17

WONDERS NEVER CEASE FOR WONDER PUPPY, NW Portland’s favorite place for training. Kerry Ryan, a Wonder Puppy trainer, won First Place again this year, while four other trainers at Wonder Puppy placed in the Top 10. The facility itself took first place in the Playgroups/ Spaces category.

D 18 Spot Magazine | spotmagazine.net

The Wonder Puppy philosophy holds that a solid foundation in basic skills lays the groundwork and that anything can start from that. Owner Casey Newton says training is offered in individual and group sessions, all designed to make puppies and their peeps successful. Puppy-people teams gain a

foundation for pups to grow into healthy, happy dogs who successfully function in a human-oriented urban environment. While everyone is welcome, the focus is on pups from when they are just a twinkling idea to age two. Ryan, who teaches private lessons at Wonder Puppy and has her own training company, Dog Adventures Northwest, offers her recipe for success: More exercise, managing the environment and positive reinforcement of desired behaviors. Ryan believes most local dogs get maybe a quarter of the exercise they need. As for managing the environment, she says slippers don’t get eaten when they’re kept out of reach. Positive training, positive environment and positive attitude — that’s the Wonder Puppy way. – Gail Krueger

G R E AT FA R E I N A P U P- F R I E N D LY AT M O S P H E R E LIFE IS GOOD WHEN YOU CAN head to the pub with your best friends after work. And if your best friends happen to have four legs and wagging tails, Portland has you covered in style. Cheryl Huerta and her two Pit Bulls like to hang out at Lucky Labrador Brewing Company, and they’re in good company. With pizza, pub fare, and craft beers on tap, Lucky Lab’s four metro locations top the pet-friendly pub category. Three other local haunts round out the “pupular” pubs list. The Mississippi neighborhood’s hipster casual Amnesia Brewing ties for second place with the beloved Roscoe’s jukebox joint on SE Stark. Third place goes to North Portland’s Fifth Quadrant Lompoc restaurant and brewery, offering a slightly more ambient vibe and an upscale twist on classic pub food. Truffle oil pub fries, anyone? Tin Shed Garden Café in NE Portland is the favorite haunt of Maureen Kelly and her dog Henri. “As soon as we’re seated, we two-footers get our menus and the pup gets a bowl of water,” she says. Henri highly recommends the special dog menu’s burger and rice dish. Followed closely by Lucky Lab and the casual, nautical vibe at Beaches, Tin Shed tops the pup-friendly restaurant list. With happy red doggie bandanas, selfserve dog treats and frequent fundraisers for Oregon Humane and Fences for Fido, Maureen says, “What more could you ask for? We love Tin Shed.” – Michelle Blake

Oregon ranks high in national standings for pet ownership — of course! According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Oregon ranks fourth in the nation for having pets in the family, with over 63.6 percent of Oregon households having at least one pet. Oregon also hit the Top 10 for cats at home, ranking third overall for cats tolerating humans in more than 40 percent of the state’s homes. Meow!

Place Top Dog Meat for Cats and Dogs, made news this year when she opened The Meat Locker, a mini version of Meat. The “cart,” on N. Williams Ave. in Portland, offers treats and supplies.

Practices not long ago considered strange or foreign — such as herbal and organic products, therapies once used only for humans (acupuncture, massage), and even an approach to care that considers food, lifestyle and “enrichment,” have increasingly become not just widely accepted, but hugely popular. Feeling “behind the curve” on the subject? Relax — resources abound. In addition to the pros and businesses voted Top Dog in the Holistic categories this year, their websites generally offer great resources on related subjects. Popular opinion in today’s pet community holds that the more you know about holistic practices the more you’ll appreciate and insist on them — for countless good reasons.

Additional wins include 5th place for Veterinarian (Laird Goodman DVM), Cat Boarding and Dog Grooming (tie). Murrayhill also made Top 10 for Cat Daycare. “We feel honored and fortunate to be recognized, both the hospital and the people who work here,”says Goodman of the Top Dog Awards. The doctor credits Murrayhill’s wins to its core values. He says it’s the little things adding up — compassion, enhancing the human/ animal bond, client education, progressive medicine, and diagnostics and proactive care —as well as what he calls his “Mayo clinic”of a team. Goodman started practicing in the early ‘90s at North Portland Veterinary, where he says he was mentored along with other notable local veterinarians. All Murrayhill doctors serve numerous veterinary organizations, including the OVMA, AAHA, OHS and Pet Partners. Laird says he’s amazed by Murrayhill’s Joni MacDonald, 1st place Cat Groomer. On staff for nearly 20 years, rather than “groomer,” MacDonald refers to herself as a “pet hairstylist.” Family- and community-driven, Murrayhill supports homeless pets, OHS foster animals, and the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon. –Vonnie Harris

Philosophy/Mission: My mission is to ensure that my patients live the longest and happiest lives possible. I believe in being proactive and I emphasize wellness care in order to prevent health issues. For example, administration of broad spectrum parasite control can help to prevent harmful and potentially life-threatening parasites for your pet, your family, and your community. I also believe in working with and providing education for clients to become partners in their pet’s health care. For example, I enjoy working closely with owners to manage weight in order to minimize long-term arthritic changes and also to manage oral health in order to prevent periodontal disease. These are two areas that owners can play an active role in keeping their pet healthy and happy.

www.goodneighborvet.com

My favorite moments are when I can see the health benefits of an owner’s oral home care efforts. My goal is to eliminate periodontal disease in my patients with routine dental procedures and owner education about appropriate chew toys and home care options.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Adrianne Fairbanks is joining our team at Pearl Animal Hospital. Dr. Fairbanks brings with her years of experience and her passion for pet health. We are sure your pet will love her just as much as we do.

C HOOSING YOUR PET’S SECOND-BEST FRIEND

Selecting a veterinarian is more than finding a doctor who is good with animals; you need a doctor who is good with people. Veterinarians are generally part of a team that includes techs and support staff, so consider the whole practice. In addition to basics like a clean, comfortable environment and a caring, competent team, the culture of the practice will also affect your experience.

Portland pets have a brand new friend in the Pearl District!

Prevailing wisdom suggests the first step in choosing a vet is seeking referrals from others who care for their animals much like you do. Credentials worth checking for include membership in the American Animal Hospital Association. Once you’ve narrowed your search, schedule a visit to meet staff and tour the facility. This is a reasonable request that should be granted happily. Make a list of questions ahead; here are a few that can be important yet overlooked: • Are dog and cat cages in separate areas? • Are lab and/or diagnostic work performed in-house or referred to a specialist? • What emergency services are available? • Do fees fit your budget? Are there discounts for senior citizens or multi-pet households? Once you’ve made your choice, remember that being a good client is your part in ensuring a happy relationship. Here are a few tips: • Schedule appointments and be on time. • Take your cat to the clinic in a carrier, your dog on leash. • Even in an emergency, call ahead, and if you have to wait on arrival, be patient — others are waiting too. Trust the staff’s good judgment in prioritizing patients. Excerpted in part from tips from the Humane Society of the United States. N 2012 PET PARENTS IN THE US spent an I estimated $52.87 billion on their babies

THIS SE PORTLAND CLINIC, known for its comfy furniture and high-touch service, is a consistent Top Dog favorite. Dr. Kristin Sulis opened the practice in hopes of creating a sunlit, environmentally-friendly atmosphere that would nurture her clients, patients and staff. Consecutive years of praise and top awards prove she has succeeded. “I wanted a space that was very pet friendly,” Dr. Sulis says, “hence the rough-ground concrete floors and carpet. Our weight scale is sunken in the ground so dogs only have to stand on a piece of carpet and get cookies, which isn’t too hard.” The clinic exudes a lighthearted, upbeat energy reflected back in client reviews. Sulis points to her current favorite: a client’s hilarious description of her dog “licking up every precious drop of glow-in-the-dark orange Easy Cheese” that Mt. Tabor’s award-winning Dr. Krissy Bussmann dispenses to turn a potentiallyscary needle aspiration into a pretty fun deal. Bussmann is a 2nd Place Top Dog in the individual Veterinarian category this year.
