Companion and working animals are important, beloved members of the family. Spot Magazine is the one-stop resource for information, ideas, and events of interest to these animals and their people.

You and your fellow Spot readers voted for “the Best in the [pet] Biz” in 31 categories last summer, from attorney to groomer, veterinarian to trainer, and “everything pet” in between. Once again you’ve made it a blowout, bringing many new professionals and businesses into the Top Dog spotlight. I love this process, as it can really boost pet professionals doing great work. Case in point: a note from a reader last year said, “Thanks a lot for naming my groomer Top Dog . . . now I can’t get the dogs in for 2-3 weeks!”

And that’s exactly why we do this — it’s good for everyone! You, the reader, get a Directory of the best in the biz by popular vote — making the listings much like a referral from a friend. Professionals and businesses doing great work are recognized and showcased in a way they’re at your fingertips when you need services and products in the year ahead. After you’ve read your regular Spot content in the outside 16 pages, just tear those off and keep the Directory handy for reference throughout the coming months. You’ll notice the Directory has a heavier cover, so it pulls out with ease. And, if you misplace it (or need to give it to a friend), copies will be available at pet events and venues all year long. I hope you’ll scan the entire Directory now — in addition to the listings there are stories highlighting those who warrant a special little something for noteworthy achievements and successes. This is a great chance to acquaint yourself with them, and all of our wonderful NW merchants and practitioners. We’re blessed here in the Northwest to have such a deep, rich field of talent in the animal “arts,” “sciences,” and welfare arenas, and the more you know who/what’s out there, the better equipped you’ll be if/when you have a specific need this year. Thanks again for voting this year, and many thanks to all the wonderful businesses and professionals who participated, who support Spot, and who do so much to uplift, enrich and educate our pet-loving community. A great big round of applause to you, winners all! Yours in everything pet,

rescueme! Cinnamon

Hi, I’m a Basenji in a tough spot, and am hoping you find my message and go: “He’s the one!” I was rescued 2 years ago at about age 2, found running alone on a California road. Things have been fine with my “mom,” the cats and the kids, but I just can’t seem to leave the other dog, a Pit-Mastiff, alone! I try, but he gets me going, and then . . . trouble. If you could love and work with someone like me I will be the happiest boy in the world! Thanks for reading . . . please call Sherry at 360-628-3754 or 541782-5532 to learn more or meet me.

Gina

Jot

This two-year-old grey Tabby is hungry for attention. In return, her purr motor kicks in to let you know she is one happy cat. She loves being petted and lying next to you. She’s also a playful girl who loves batting the feather wand and will fit great in a home with lots of interaction. Jot is currently at Hillsboro PetSmart. To learn more or to meet her, call 503-615-5900 or visit catadoptionteam.org.

Kahlua

Mamma Mia and Muskrat

This mother and daughter are calm, quiet, and love each other very much. They are initially cautious with human caregivers, but warm up and snuggle when they understand all is safe. When out and about for exercise they are curious and energetic. They love to eat lots of hay and other bunny foods, and enjoy lounging together in their cardboard tunnel. These beautiful bunnies will blossom in a loving indoor-only home with room to play and lots of attention. Children in the family should be able to be calm and respectful around them. To learn more, contact nellie409@yahoo.com.

Scout

Scout is a sweet, brown Tabby who was in a home for 4 years when, through no fault of her own, wound up at the shelter. Her family described her as friendly and said she loved to sleep curled up on the bed. Scout enjoys being petted but not held. She likes interacting with people, but isn’t demanding, and like most cats, appreciates her independence. Scout is a good family companion but might be shy around guests. She’s playful, so bring on the toys! Scout is waiting at CAT’s Sherwood shelter. To meet her or learn more call 503-925-8903 or visit catadoptionteam.org.

I might have a silly name, and I might be a silly girl, but I am full of love! Sometimes new things scare me and I may need some patience and time to settle in. I am learning house manners in my foster home, and am almost potty trained. I currently live with children, and would do well in a home with respectful children. To meet me, please contact my foster mom Angela at 503-807-9134.

Breed Overview Size: Grooming: Exercise: Environment: Temperament:

small/medium demanding undemanding a small yard will suffice independent but loyal

Interesting Facts

Common Health Problems

The Chow dog’s mouth and tongue are blue-black. The breed originated in China where they served as guard dogs and companions.

Chows are prone to minor health concerns including entropion (eye irritation) and ear infections. Hip and elbow dysplasia are seen in some dogs.

Appearance

Best Match

A Spitz breed, the Chow has a square build with a tightly-curled tail and upright ears. His coat is thick and plush, and may be black, red, blue, fawn or cream. Chows can reach 22 inches at the shoulder. Their movement appears slightly stilted thanks to a stiff-legged gait.

The Chow’s best match will be prepared for frequent grooming, about every 6 weeks, as he’ll do some serious seasonal shedding. His heavy coat requires at least bi-weekly brushing in order to be groomed effectively and not mat. At home I suggest a de-shedding brush such as the Andis or Furminator between grooming sessions. The Chow, like most dogs, would prefer a person or family with whom she can spend a great deal of time. This dog is not a great choice for someone who frequently entertains or who has high expectations for a fast friend — he needs time to warm up to people.

Personality This is a laid-back breed but can be wary of strangers. They are very loyal to their guardians.

Size: 55 lbs Life Expectancy:

Featured Adoptable Bruno is a tad timid, but responds well to kind words and attention. He walks relatively well on leash but would benefit greatly from additional training. This non-aggressive sweetie loves walks and hopes to find someone to share this passion with him. He is alert and eager to please, and will do well in a home with older, respectful children. This senior pooch has many more years of love to share. Bruno is a neutered, adult male who is house trained and current on shots. Meet Bruno at Homeward Bound Pets in McMinnville, OR, call 503-472-0341 or visit hbpets@frontier.com for more information.

a little spice in your blog reading? Look no further than My Life with Flyball Dogs (mylifewithflyballdogs. blogspot.com). From cats to dogs to sports to menu planning, author Crystal keeps the flavors a changin’! Her true love, as the title tells it, is flyball. But she and her catchy canines, Koira and Pallo, have recently started to venture into the world of competitive obedience as well. In fact, you just might catch them at one of the upcoming dog shows.

FURDry Wearable Dog Towel, by FURminator

Like most true Pacific Northwesters they enjoy the great outdoors, and that includes the glorious white stuff up on the mountain. Crystal, Pallo, and Koira, along with Crystal’s mom, checked out the slopes recently, tried skijoring, and had a blast (January 7, 2012). Rain or shine, these guys are up for adventure —from picking blackberries at the park (Sept. 6, 2011) to dodging sprinklers or playing “lost” in the wilderness to help search and rescue teams train (Sept. 5, 2011).

Many dogs enjoy chewing the marrow from antlers, while their humans appreciate a preoccupied dog and the benefit of clean teeth. Wild Chewz Antler Hemp Rope, a combination chew, fetch and tug toy, comes from free-ranging elk, so the antlers are hormone-free. The hemp comes from Romania, reputed to have higher water and air quality than other leading hemp exporters. Additionally, hemp has natural insecticide properties, so these ropes aren’t treated with pesticides like some. Once a dog gets ahold of one, the hemp may fray into small Double E Pet products is a family-run business in Bend, Oregon that fibers, but I didn’t find it messy and understand hemp is more digestible manufactures and distributes high-quality, eco-friendly pet products. than chunks from cotton rope. Reactions from the four dogs I treated to the ropes ranged from elated — one wouldn’t give up the rope antler at bedtime — to occasionally chewing and playing fetch with it. The hemp smell really seems to attract dogs!

My Life with Flyball Dogs

FURminator, the maker of the well known de-shedding pet brush, has a new item: the FURDry wearable dog towel. FURDry towels help pet parents dry their dogs without a commercial dryer, and eliminates having a wet dog all over the car, carpet or furniture. Throw it on after an afternoon outdoors, a swim, or a visit to the dog wash. The towel slips over the dog’s head and tail and cinches around the body with a Velcro strap to fit snuggly and comfortably, even for more active dogs.

One of my favorite things about this blog is that it includes real life! There’s so much cool stuff, including yummy recipes (holiday baking is discussed Dec. 12, 2011), references to other helpful blogs (check out Menu Planning Mondays), cool videos, great training tips and ideas, contests, health topics, and great discussions (check out the one on BSL Oct. 21, 2011). The pictures are plentiful, the videos and content expansive. Head on over and check them out!

This is one of those products where you wonder where it’s been all this time. I did initially have trouble finding a dog that fit the medium-sized FURDry towel, so measure your pup before purchasing and don’t just follow breed guidelines. An online sizing chart can help with the measurements. Get it: FUR Dry is sold at pet stores such as PetCo, and is available online at FURminator.com.

Tricks of the Trade…

little newsbits to chew on

Partnering with your Pet

reat photos happen when your vision for a photograph aligns with what your subject has to offer. You both play an equally important role — your pet as the star and you as photographer. Thus, a good portrait session is when you and your subject partner in a way that you both get something out of the experience. Your pet could probably care less about the photos you want. In my experience once they’ve determined the camera is not a great thing to either eat or play with, they conclude it’s pretty boring. I think they find it even more boring when we hide our faces behind the camera. So the challenge is to figure out what’s in it for them. The more fun the photo session is for your subject the better the expressions you’ll capture. Since we can’t verbally negotiate a plan with our pets like we can with people, you’ll find you create the most powerful photographs when you follow your pet’s lead, and then nudge them in a direction and see if they’ll go there. For instance, if you’re hoping for action photos, try making a few quick, fun and energetic movements to see if your pet is up for it. If they jump up ready to play, then you’re all set. If they stare, signaling they have no interest in playing, then try a Plan B. Just remember, pets speak and understand body language much better than verbal communication. The key is to find something you’re both excited about. If they aren’t in the mood for action, maybe now is the time for cute “resting in bed” photos. Or maybe they’re in the mood for “I’ll look excited while you give me treats.” You’ll know when you’ve hit on a good plan when things start to flow naturally. You’ll feel like you and your pet are moving smoothly together in the same direction. Once things are flowing, stay tuned in and engaged with your pet. It’s easy for us photographers to get so interested in what’s happening behind the camera that we disengage from our subjects. Once that happens they often get bored and begin to

FCCO offers limited free S/N

look for something fun to do. So don’t just be an observer — be a participant with your pet in whatever is happening. Don’t worry if you miss an occasional great photo because you were engaged with your pet and not behind the camera. You’ll more than make up for it by all the other great shots you get from being connected and having fun. Another benefit of ensuring you both get something out of the photo sessions is that your pet may start to look forward to them. Ideally, your pet will be excited to see your camera, knowing it means fun times.

This month’s assignment is to create a photo of your pet enjoying a photo session. So it can be anything your pet wants to do — play, take a walk, watch the birds out the window, etc. — anything where you follow their lead. I’d love to hear about your experience as well as see your photos. Please send them to david@davidchildsphotography.com with the subject “Spot Photo Class” so we can share them online.

When Mark Tipperreiter began getting praise for Blanketbooster, designed as a “tent for people’s toes,” he didn’t expect his invention to benefit furry family members as well. Blanketbooster is a free-standing frame that lifts blankets just above the feet, creating a better night’s sleep for those who feel cramped or uncomfortable from the weight of bedding. It turns out people aren’t the only ones who appreciate a little extra room at the foot of the bed. “We had people saying, ‘My dog loves sleeping under the Blanketbooster,” says Tipperreiter, “and ‘My cats just curl up in the tent.’” With these and other testimonials, Tipperreiter met with Western Pet Supply in SW Portland, which agreed to carry Blanketbooster for those seeking greater bedtime comfort for themselves and their companions. Tethering limit bill moves forward

Teaming up with Representative Roger Goodman (D-WA) and Senator Nick Harper (D-WA) the Washington state based group, Limit Tethering, is working to get HB 1755 and SB 5649 passed into law during the 2012 session. These bills “will be implemented to end the suffering of continually tethered dogs. It will enable responding animal control and/or police officials the ability to remove these dogs from the end of a tether, preventing tragic deaths, needless human and animal injuries, as current animal cruelty laws do not cover the situation of a continually tethered dogs.”

The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon will provide free spay/neuter services for stray or feral cats Feb. 28-Mar. 17. Space is limited so appointments are necessary. The two-week clinic commemorates World Spay day (Feb 28), the annual Humane Society of the United States’s campaign to encourage people to spay and neuter feral animals. According to HSUS, six to eight million animals enter shelters each year, nearly half of which are never adopted. S/N helps prevent adding to the number of stray animals as well as the pain and suffering of living on the streets or in shelters. To learn more or RSVP, call 503-797-2606 or visit FeralCats.com.

Both bills limit the amount of time a dog can be tethered to no more than 10 hours per day, as well as restrict the weight of the chain and the type of collar used on a dog — banning the use of choke, pinch or prong collars on tethered dogs. Legislators heard testimony from citizens and other supporters of the bill at the capitol in Olympia in January. To learn more, visit: LimitTethering.wordpress.com.
