BAKERY CUPCAKE JONES TO P DOG
Proprietors: Lisa Watson & Peter Shanky 307 NW 10th Ave. Portland, OR 503-222-4404 · CupcakeJones.net Est. July 2007
Philosophy/Mission: Cupcake Jones is a labor of love for Oregon natives Lisa Watson and Peter Shanky. In the winter of 2002, on a weekend trip to Vancouver, B.C. Lisa and Peter saw the cutest little shop ever, called “Cupcakes.” After a few visits, they knew this was something Portland needed. Four and half years later, after a long search for the perfect location, lots of market research, months of work on a business plan, and lots of sleepless nights, they opened Cupcake Jones July 11, 2007. The fulfillment of Lisa’s lifelong dream of owning her own business, Cupcake Jones is the namesake of her father, Robert Jones Watson. It is also a play on the popular slang term “jonesin” or “having a jones,” meaning something you really CRAVE! Lisa and Peter are working hard with their team of talented, creative bakers and the most fun & upbeat counter staff imaginable, to bring you the finest in service and quality found anywhere.
Community Involvement, Special Notes: Lisa and Peter are committed to giving back to their community through weekly donations to Blanchet House, a local agency providing housing, meals, jobs and aid to the homeless and others in need. Other beneficiaries have included numerous local schools, Camp Fire USA, Boys and Girls Club, animal shelters, and The Red Dress Party, which supports various agencies for the GLBT community, among others. Cupcake Jones is also committed to the environment. We recycle everything possible in our business. Even the paper towels used to dry hands all day get recycled. We use only non-aerosol cleaners, most of which are biodegradable. Being “locally grown” themselves, Lisa and Peter are committed to buying local whenever possible. Local flowers, fruit, and ingredients are the cornerstone of our products.

Historic Vet Hospital Wins Big Vonnie Harris • Spot Magazine
A
s Portland’s first veterinary hospital (they celebrated their centennial birthday last year), Rose City Vet is an old and loyal friend in the Northwest pet community. “We are excited to have won in so many different categories and appreciate everyone’s votes,” says Jasmine Bachrach, Hospital Manager. The veterinary hospital won 3rd place in the Cat Medical category, and placed in numerous others, proving to be a favorite for a variety of reasons. Dr. Craig Quirk placed 4th among Veterinarians, a huge honor considering the hundreds of vets who received votes in the 2012 Top Dog Awards. Rose City also placed 4th for Veterinary Practice, and in the top 10 for Cat Boarding, Medical Specialty, and Cremation/Memorial. Rose City’s facility is a gorgeous remake of the much older clinic it replaced, fittingly housing the hospital’s state of the art technology and highly trained, friendly staff dedicated to exceptional care. Their complimentary coffee and fresh baked cookies — for both people and pets — is a nice touch, too.
Our purpose is to be the greatest little cat care center your family cat will ever know. We achieve this by providing outstanding care to cats while their people tend to other matters. We like to think of ourselves as your cat’s built-in support system: when you can’t be there, We Can!
Claim to Fame/Signature Product or Service: When you trust your cat is in good hands, you can truly focus on the matters taking you away. While kitty is in our care, it’s like he or she is with a trusted relative. Our boarding service provides a 14 SF master bedroom so your cat can stretch her legs and feel at home. Kitty’s room has a queen-sized bed, rocking chair, cat cubby, TV, 8-ft cat condo, and full-sized windows to view gardens and Crystal Creek. Smaller boarding options available. We routinely care for cats with special needs. We’re skilled at administering oral and topical medications, insulin injections, and subcutaneous fluids. Cat Grooming and cat sitting services also available.
Community Involvement: We’re a part of the community and we see friends in need. That’s why we annually participate in an auction for the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon. You can support them too by visiting www.feralcats.com. We also contribute to the Cat Adoption Team. Many of their rescues have complimented us by using and referring cat owners to our services.

This includes dogs other shelters don’t have space for, long-term residents who have run out of time, and dogs other shelters may consider ‘unadoptable.’ We take in dogs from animal control agencies and humane societies in Oregon and Washington. We also work with smaller rescue groups across the country and a limited number of owner-surrendered pets. Family Dogs works on matchmaking our dogs with their adopters. We will only introduce you to dogs we are comfortable will be a good match for both you and the dog. Our shelter is unique in that we do not house our dogs in kennels or dog runs, but in large play groups or ‘packs’ from 8-20 dogs. Since Family Dogs began in 2004 we have placed over 8000 dogs into permanent homes. Family Dogs believes in community, and we hope, with your help, we will continue reducing the number of dogs euthanized each year. Together we can make a difference.

op Dog Winner Lazy Dog Crazy Dog is reinventing doggie daycare and boarding in Portland. Its owners, Pete and Jackie McClellan, are also inventing a new language for their industry. For example, “tommy and taddy,” meaning “temporary mommy and daddy,” refers to them and their eight employees. The McClellans maintain the philosophy that a dog “is more than a family member.” Says Jackie, “We treat our dogs like they’re somebody’s kids. Like they’re our kids.” Their innovation and dedication are apparent upon entering the Montavilla facility. Cheery yellow, raspberry and espresso-colored walls and high ceilings lend an open feel to the 5000 SF play room. As 35 dogs cavort in two areas, the adjacent fenced “lazy” corner offers cots and quiet space while allowing resting dogs to observe the fun. After an initial two-hour evaluation, the McClellans and their employees, many of them PCC vet tech students, place each dog in a group according to play style. “We strive to maintain a peaceful kingdom, a balance in energy levels,” says Jackie. “We have dogs who play nonstop and dogs who play intermittently.” Pete and Jackie came to Portland in 2009 with two dogs and a host of pet rats via Hong Kong, where they were teachers. They had also lived in Australia; she says her eldest pet rat traveled in all three countries, to the chagrin of a few customs officials. The human/canine/rodent

family arrived in the Northwest “Portlandia”-style, in a VW bus that serendipitously broke down near their current facility at SE 88th and Stark Streets. “We looked at the whole city but we fell in love with the Montavilla neighborhood,” says Jackie. Having fostered, boarded and rescued dogs in Hong Kong, the 30-something couple opened their P-Town business in November 2009 and rapidly outgrew their first location. “We have customers from the whole metro area and beyond,” says Jackie, who hopes the structure, care and consistency at Lazy Dog Crazy Dog is obvious to her clients. In addition to day care, the facility provides overnight boarding, also with a twist. Dogs can stay in 6’x5’ “private suites,” or they can sleep in group areas with their doggie friends. Additionally, dogs socialized to sleep with people can sleep in a bedroom, even in a bed, with the night tommy or taddy. “We are pretty adept at matching the dogs’ sleeping needs with one of our different sleeping arrangements,” says Jackie. One such canine was Amber, Linda Dixon’s three-year old Lab-Feist mix. Likely abused by her previous owner, Amber had never slept with a person in bed before trying it out at Lazy Dog Crazy Dog. Amber has also attended day care these past 18 months. Originally reactive to other dogs, Amber “has gotten very social there,” says Dixon. “They have helped her come around and she has learned how to play.” Why does Jackie think her customers voted her business #1? “Trusting us with their kids is the highest compliment we could receive,” she says. “I just hope that our supreme dog love shines through.”

For example, testing concerns such as heartworms as part of routine wellness care, as they pose risks for long-term and potentially fatal complications. I work with owners to manage weight, including appropriate activities and joint supplements, if appropriate, to maintain quality of life in breeds prone to arthritis.
Community Involvement, Special Notes: I am a board member at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital. I have volunteered to spay/neuter cats at Feral Cat Coalition, and am an active member of PVMA (Portland Veterinary Medical Association).

Claim to Fame/Signature Product or Service: I love dentistry! A recent dental procedure uncovered a painful hidden abscess in a Labrador Retriever. After fixing the tooth, the dog, who the family thought was “getting old,” showed a jump in energy. Such reports are common during dental follow-up appointments, and I love to hear them.

rum roll please . . . “And now, the Top Dog in two major categories — Veterinarian and Veterinary Practice. And the award goes to . . . Dr. Courtney Anders and Pearl Animal Hospital!” Congratulations — Spot readers spoke loud and clear and the veterinary pearls of The Pearl came out shining. Participation was up in this fourth year of the Top Dog awards, which meant stiffer competition. Clearly the hospital and doctor’s hard work, dedication, and mission mean a lot to the pet community. As most pet owners know, what we don’t know scares us and sometimes what we do know — or learn — scares us more. The great team who “gets it” at Pearl Animal Hospital provides information and genuine compassion, which can make the difference that matters. Perhaps it is a practical philosophy, a way of doing business that boosted the hospital to #1. Namely, helping clients understand what’s going on, what options are available, and why one might be better than another, all the while showing kindness for the animal and owner. Nestled on NW 10th, this gem of a practice is open six days a week. On staff, in addition to Dr. Anders, are two associate veterinarians, Dr. Williams and Dr. Lord, along with support personnel. Their experience and interests are vast, and the clinic website has lots of helpful nuggets of information — including local links worth bookmarking.
