EAR GUESTS It gives me great pleasure to welcome you once again to the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. In its 29th year of existence, our tournament promises to be the best and most prestigious polo tournament on snow, thanks to the four excellently assembled teams representing world-class sponsors. As the world’s only high-goal polo tournament on snow in the scope of the World Polo Tour, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow possesses enormous appeal. In polo, this tournament enjoys a distinct status, not unlike that of the Olympic Games in the context of global sport. Our tournament inspires, creates sustainable added value and is a permanent fixture on the calendars of the world’s best polo players. Winning the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is an unforgettable experience, and to hold the Cartier Trophy aloft against the backdrop of the wonderful mountain region of the Upper Engadin is akin to winning an Olympic gold medal. Following on from the games of 1928 and 1948, the Winter Olympic Games could take place in St. Moritz for the third time. The Swiss Confederation supports St. Moritz and Davos’s endeavour to submit a bid for the 2022 Winter Games. The potential bid is also supported by the canton of Graubünden and Swiss Olympic, the governing body for Swiss sport. The vote to decide upon the bid will be held in Graubünden on 3 March 2013. I am confident that the public will also support this project, because a regionally rooted sport event with international reach has a very strong appeal. Year after year, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is proof of this. Therefore, I would like to thank all those who will contribute to this tournament: Team Ralph Lauren with captain Michael Bickford, Team Cartier with captain Jonathan Munro Ford, Team Sal. Oppenheim with captain Richard Davis and Team BMW with captain Andreas Knapp Voith, all of the sponsors and tournament partners, the officials, assist-ants and also the spectators, who come out to enjoy the polo on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. I hope that you will take pleasure in the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2013. Once again, it promises to be an event unlike any other.

Andreas Knapp Voith

With a passion for speed, Andreas Knapp Voith, a polo enthusiast and automotive aficionado with a zero-goal handicap, will be competing with team BMW. Knapp Voith enjoyed a successful year of polo, predominantly in the warmer climes of St Tropez, where he played with Pink Energy in June – winning the Tournoi de Pentecôte. He then went on to

play arena polo in July with team Julius Baer, winning the 3rd Ascona Polo Cup at Polo Club Ascona on the north shore of Lake Maggiore. After a hot season and an arena win, Knapp Voith is now ready for polo on snow alongside Argentine six-goal players Bautista Ortiz de Urbina, Ignacio Tillous and Lucas Labat.

Jonathan Munro Ford

An avid Australian patron, Jonathan Munro Ford plays off a zero-goal handicap. During the past year Munro Ford enjoyed a victorious British season as the patron of his team Black Eagles, with several successes at Guards Polo Club including winning the 6-goal spring tournament on the Prince’s Ground at Smiths Lawn, The Duke of Wellington Tournament and The Fox and

Hound Social Cup. Most recently, Munro Ford and his team competed in the 12-goal Autumn Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, where the British Open is played, and he has now come to St. Moritz to compete on snow as the patron of eighteen-goal team Cartier alongside six-goal players Max Charlton, Nacho Gonzalez and Chris Hyde from Great Britain.

Michael Bickford

With a handicap of one goal, Michael Bickford is the highest-handicapped patron in the tournament. A polo aficionado, Bickford has enjoyed a successful time as patron of his team Cold Smoke, who were named the Arena Gold Cup champions in 2010 at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club and the Arena Silver Cup champions in 2011. However, 2012 got off to a rough start for Cold Smoke, with Bickford receiving a broken collar bone at the arena high-goal chal-

lenge at Hickstead last spring. Despite this, Bickford was not deterred and went on to play with his new team La Indiana in the mediumgoal at Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande later in the season. Having enjoyed the warm Spanish summer and fully recovered from his injury, Bickford is now embracing the cold of the snow, competing as the patron of team Ralph Lauren with Argentine top players Marcos Araya and Nacho Figueras as well as Jamie Morrison from Great Britain.

Richard Davis

After a successful British season, Sal. Oppenheim patron Richard Davis, plays off a zerogoal handicap. In February 2011, Davis launched his 10-goal team Clashleigh and enjoyed many successes that year, including winning the Holden White Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club in July and the Autumn 10 Goal Tournament where he played on the stunning grounds at Coworth Park, Dorchester Collection’s lux-

ury country house hotel in Ascot. 2012 proved to be just as successful with Davis enjoying a great British season, leading Clashleigh to victory at the Brecknock Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, and the Polo Festival at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club alongside teammates Jonny Good and Tarquin Southwell. Eduardo Novillo Astrada with the highest handicap of the tournament (9) completes the quartet.

CHILDREN BEYOND

BEYOND is a dialogue of religions, driven by a world-embracing language: music. Three women from different traditions, united in their commitment for religious tolerance, invite you to accompany them on a journey. In October 2011, under the title Children Beyond, the three singers Tina Turner, Regula Curti and Dechen Shak-Dagsay released their second album. The aim of this project, which follows on from the platinum album Beyond, is to make a contribution to peace and tolerance.

“When you sing you do the right thing – sing!“ BEYOND is a charity, all proceeds are passed on to foundations. In this way, the singers support intercultural, peace-promoting projects in music education and research for children and youths, as well as projects for children, mothers or women in distress. At the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2013, a local project, chosen by BEYOND, benefits from our various charity actions: Giuvaulta, an integrative school for mentally and physically handicapped children in the alpine region of Graubünden, Switzerland. www.giuvaulta.ch

Oliver Ellis TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR AND UMPIRE

Having begun playing polo at Cowdray Park Pony Club in his childhood years, Oliver Ellis has enjoyed an extensive career playing professional polo. At the peak of his career he reached a six-goal handicap and played at the majority of the top polo clubs around the world. Among his many successes he has represented England, won the British Open, the Warwickshire Cup and the Prince of Wales Cup. With a successful career playing professional polo and as a member of Cowdray Park Polo Club for over 30 years, Ellis was then made Polo Manager at Guards Polo Club from 2002 to 2012. With extensive polo experience both at home and abroad, Ellis is now exploring pastures new and will return this year as the lead umpire at the St Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. Having played and umpired all over the world, Ellis is a highly experienced umpire. During his time at Guards Polo Club he organised various umpiring meetings and talks for members and players. He encouraged playing members to take their umpire test while providing influential speakers, both from the sport and outside the world of polo, to inspire and motivate players. Ellis maintains that, to be a good player, umpire training is paramount as it donates an in-depth understanding of the game and requires respect for all players. As a result of Ellis’ instrumental efforts, the umpiring team at Guards Polo Club has expanded significantly. During the British season, Ellis umpires at committee level at Cowdray Park Polo Club as well as at other prestigious Brit-

ish polo clubs and private polo events. During the winter months he can often be found umpiring at the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. Irrespective of the playing surface and climate, polo is a fantastic sport to watch and play. As such, Ellis states that any well-played match with both teams playing with style and charm is always a pleasure to watch and especially umpire. Having experienced all levels of polo, Ellis has acquired a vast knowledge and understanding of the sport, which has earned him both popularity and respect from players and pat-rons alike. He understands the most important elements of the game and what his priorities must be when umpiring. A credit to any club, team or match, it is no surprise that Ellis has been invited not only to umpire but also to take up the prestigious position of Tournament Director for this year’s St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow.

In ancient Greece, caviar was introduced by fanfares at banquets, and in Roman literature it is described that a bowl of caviar cost as much as a hundred lambs. The Persians in turn used caviar as a medicine and the Russian tsars considered caviar to be “the food of the gods”. Raised in the wild and environmentally friendly In 2011 the UN prohibited the fishing of wild sturgeons and consequently the trade of “wild caviar”. In contrast ZwyerCaviar‘s sturgeons grow up in an unspoilt natural landscape in a largely untouched environment. The sustainably run aquafarms meet the highest health and quality standards. Central is the aim of producing the world’s best caviar true to nature. The emphasis is clearly on quality and not quantity and makes this caviar a genuine rarity. The growing international client list includes: The Savoy London, The Dolder Grand Zurich, Park Hyatt Zurich, Fairmont Bab al Bahr Abu Dhabi, Ritz-Carlton Singapore, Le Bon Marché Paris and Harrods London.

ZwyerCaviar is available at all Globus ***delicatessa stores across Switzerland and can be ordered directly at ZwyerCaviar GmbH Tel. +41 (0)71 333 40 00 • Fax +41(0)71 330 04 70 • caviar@zwyercaviar.com • ww.zwyercaviar.com

A Short Introduction to Polo PONIES AND SAFETY FIRST

At first sight, polo looks fairly simple. However, the written rules of the game, governing all the moves and rights of way, are myriad. The safety of the ponies and their riders is paramount and given the highest priority, in addition to balanced, competitive and fluid play. To give a broad understanding of polo, and make it possible to follow the game, the main rules are outlined on these pages.

Teams Each team consists of four players. Number 3 is usually the captain, who organises the team. Number 4, also known as “back“, is responsible for defence, while the other two players are attackers. Handicap Depending on ability, each polo player plays with a handicap ranging from –2 to +10. While the entry level of –2 denotes a beginner, very few players in the world hold the highest possible handicap of +10, and most of these are Argentineans. A player’s handicap is reviewed annually, according to his performance. When a team is put together, the handicaps of the four individual players are added up to give the team handicap. Tournament Tournaments are promoted in various classes of play (low-, medium- or highgoal), and the handicaps of the teams must correspond to these. If teams of different handicaps play against each other, the difference is made up by allocating the appropriate number of goals to one team.

The field Polo can be played on practically any level field of sufficient size. The ground must be firm and constantly maintained. The official international dimensions of a polo field are 182 metres wide by 274 metres long. Polo on snow is played on smaller fields, as the physical strain of playing winter polo, mostly at higher altitudes, is greater on the ponies than that experienced in summer polo on grass. The goal has uprights but no crossbar, and is 7.3 metres wide.

Chukka Depending on the organisation of the tournament, a polo match consists of four, five or six time units known as chukkas. In high-goal snow polo, a match normally consists of four chukkas, each lasting 7.5 minutes. The last chukka of the game lasts exactly seven minutes. A pony can be played in no more than two chukkas in any one match, and not in consecutive

chukkas. If polo is played on grass, at half-time there is a five-minute break, dur-ing which the public are asked to walk on to the field and “tread in“ the divots of turf carved up by the ponies’ hooves. Direction of play The game has one tradition which always confuses newcomers to polo. Whenever a goal is scored, the direction of play switches. The rule traces its origin to the hotter climes of the British Empire. Playing against a low and dazzling sun put one team at a decisive disadvantage. The rule also prevents excessive damage to the turf at the weaker team’s goal mouth due to one-way play. Right of way The fundamental and most important rule of the sport of polo is known as the “Right of Way“ (ROW). Whenever the ball is in play, a right of way exists and is always deemed to be held by the player who is established on, or at the closest angle to, the line of the ball (LOB = the extended path along which the ball has travelled, or is travelling). No other player may enter or cross this LOB. Players may not position or check their ponies over the line if this poses the slightest risk of collision with the player who currently has ROW. “Hooking“ and “riding off“ The player with ROW can only lose this by being “ridden off“ or “hooked“. ‘Hooking’ means using the stick to prevent the other player from retrieving or striking the ball. This is done by blocking the opponent’s stick

during a swing or while the other player is tapping or dribbling the ball. It is forbidden to hook over the body of the opponent’s pony. “Riding off“ means trying to force an opponent who is riding parallel off course similar to a body check, so that the player can no longer hit the ball. “Riding off“ is allowed provided it takes place parallel, and not at an angle, to the player who has ROW.

Tapping techniques In principle, the ball is tapped on the right-hand side of the pony, known as the “offside“. Tapping takes place in a forward (offside forehand) or backward (offside backhand) direction. For a “nearside“ play, which takes place on the pony’s left-hand side, the player has to twist in the saddle and, still holding the stick in his right hand, bring it to the other side of the pony. Nearside forehand and nearside backhand are the corresponding forward and backward plays.“Under the neck“ refers to strokes performed in front of, or under the neck of, the pony. Among the trickiest manoeuvres are “tail strokes“, performed to the rear of the horse.
