Vor unzähligen Jahren erfand man in St. Moritz den Wintersport. Das damals noch unbekannte Engadiner Dorf erhielt dafür den Nobelpreis und trägt seither den Titel «Geburtsstätte des Wintersports»… Na gut, so war’s nicht ganz. Der Nobelpreis für die Erfindung des Wintersports wurde nie vergeben und den Titel hat St. Moritz nie offiziell verliehen bekommen. Was nicht heisst, dass dieser nicht zutreffen würde. Schliesslich lockte ein innovativer St. Moritzer Hotelier 1864 tatsächlich die ersten Wintertouristen der Alpen ins Engadin. Rund 20 Jahre später kann mit dem Bau des Cresta Runs von den Anfängen des Wintersports gesprochen werden. Grund genug, dass sich die aktuelle Ausgabe des Essential Guide St. Moritz diesem Thema widmet. Seither sind nicht nur die Wintersportmöglichkeiten vervielfältigt worden, sondern auch so ziemlich alle anderen Angebote. Überzeugen Sie sich auf den nächsten Seiten davon. Denn nichts ist so schön wie ein echter Engadiner Winter. Schon seit mindestens 1864.

Once upon a time in St. Moritz, winter sports were invented, for which achievement this once-obscure Engadine village was awarded a Nobel Prize and officially titled «The Birthplace of Winter Sports»… well, ok, not quite… the Nobel Prize for the invention of winter sports was never awarded and St. Moritz was never officially titled either, but there is also truth to the story: in 1864, an innovative St. Moritz hotel owner lured the Alps’ first winter tourists to the Engadine, and about 20 years later was what is considered to be the beginning of winter sports: the construction of the Cresta Run – reason enough to dedicate this edition of the Essential Guide St. Moritz to this theme. Since then, not only the possibilities for winter sports have multiplied, but pretty much every other service as well – take a look for yourself on the following pages. For the most part, shops in St.Moritz are open from 9 am to 12.30 pm, and from 2 pm to 6.30 or 7 pm. On Saturday, most of the shops already close at 5 pm. During the high season, many of them are open over lunchtime, and stay open longer in the evening; some boutiques are also open on Sunday.

Wie wär‘s dann mit einer Schlittschuhfahrt durch den Eiskanal des Olympia Bobruns St. Moritz-Celerina, einer Schüttel-Partie am berühmt-berüchtigten Cresta Run, rasanten Snowkite-Kurven auf dem Silvaplanersee oder einem Fallschirmsprung aus über 5'000 Metern Höhe? Sie sehen: Im Engadin wird es auch diesen Winter an spektakulären Bergerlebnissen nicht fehlen…

Many things seem easier in an Engadine winter, and easiest of all is falling under the spell of the mountain mood. This was first discovered by the British through a bet: in early September, 1864, the St. Moritz hotel-pioneer Johannes

Mountain Mood Es gibt vieles, das einem im Engadiner Winter etwas leichter fällt. Am einfachsten ist es, gründlich dem Mountain Mood zu verfallen. Als erste haben dies übrigens die Engländer entdeckt. Und erst noch durch eine Wette. Der St. Moritzer Hotel-Pionier Johannes Badrutt forderte Anfang September 1864 vier britische Sommergäste auf, im Winter wiederzukommen. Falls es ihnen nicht gefalle, zahle er ihre Reisekosten ab London und zurück. Falls St. Moritz ihnen im Winter aber zusage, lade er sie als seine Gäste ein, so lange zu bleiben, wie sie wollten. Den Engländern gefiel diese Wette, bei der sie so oder so gewinnen würden. Sie akzeptierten, kamen an Weihnachten und blieben bis Ostern. Sie waren die ersten Wintertouristen der Alpen, und entdeckten eine neue Welt – die weissen Winterferien.

Badrutt challenged four British summer guests to come back in winter. If they didn’t like it, he would reimburse them for their travelling costs from London and back. If they did like it, he would invite them to stay as his guests for as long as they liked. The English were pleased by this bet that they could only win either way, so they accepted and came back at Christmas… and stayed until Easter. They were the Alps’ first winter tourists and discovered a new world: white winter holidays. Today there are 350 kilometers of ski slopes, 180 kilometers of cross-country ski trails, 9 ski areas and 88 descents prepared in the Destination Engadin St. Moritz in winter. Too tame? How about going down the Olympic Bobrun St. Moritz-Celerina ice run on ice skates, taking a back-breaking ride down the infamous Cresta Run, curving with a speeding snowkite on frozen Lake Silvaplana or parachuting from over 5,000 meters altitude? You see: in the Engadine there is no end of spectacular mountain experiences again this winter…

Clavadatsch Hütte Die Clavadatsch Hütte ist ein kleines Juwel mitten im Suvrettagebiet. Von der windgeschützten Terrasse mit gemütlichen Strandkörben geniessen die Gäste einen einmaligen Blick über die Oberengadiner Seenlandschaft zum Corvatsch. Innen sorgt der original erhaltene Kuhstall für eine urchige Stimmung. Auf der Speisekarte stehen feine Haxen, Grillhähnchen und Rösti vom offenen Feuer sowie leckere Pizzas aus dem Steinofen. Der Geheimtipp ist eine tolle Location für Privatparties bis ca. 45 Personen. Leicht erreichbar zu Fuss oder mit Skiern. The Clavadatsch hut is a jewel in the Suvretta area. From its wind-protected terrace with cozy canopied beach chairs, one enjoys a magnificent view of the Corvatsch over the Engadine lakes. Indoors, the former cow barn has a rustic ambience. On the menu are excellent roasts, grilled chicken and Rösti cooked over the open fire as well as delicious stone-baked pizzas. A popular rendezvous under deep blue St. Moritz skies offering unbeatable views over the Upper Engadine’s lakes. The wonderful spacious sun terrace invites guests to relax and enjoy the good things in life. The restaurant serves traditional fare including Grisons barley soup, tortelloni and polenta in a friendly and informal mountain-hut ambience. Well worth a visit – even if only for the sweet dishes such as sugared pancakes with raisins (Kaiserschmarrn), crumb cake (Streuselkuchen) and apple strudel – all on the changing menu. The whole restaurant can be rented for a «mountain-hut» evening or other social occasion for a minimum of 40 guests, with maximum seating for 140 people.

This traditional sports shop in the center of St. Moritz offers a complete selection of skiwear and winter clothing for men, women and children at fair prices: top fashion by Vist, Colmar, PostCard and Mammut complemented by sporty or trendy pieces. Der Künstler aus dem Fex zaubert daraus mit intuitiver Schöpfungskraft Skulpturen und Objekte von archaischer Schönheit. Gestalten zwischen Licht und Schatten, Leben und Tod. Seine Werke versprühen eine ganz eigene Ästhetik und entwickeln dabei beinahe mystische Energie – ähnlich den Kultobjekten primitiver Stämme. Von dort bezieht Marco Zuffellato auch einen guten Teil seiner Inspiration. Die neuen Werke können in der Galerie im Fex nach Voranmeldung besichtigt werden. Sie symbolisieren alpine Sagengestalten, Berggeister und Fabelwesen. Marco Zuffellato’s basic materials are organic elements such as driftwood, skulls, feathers and horsehair as well as crude metal and seemingly useless finds. With intuitive creative power, the Fex valley artist creates sculptures and objects of archaic beauty - forms between light and shadow, life and death. His work radiates a unique aesthetic quality with an almost mystic energy – similar to the cult objects of primitive tribes, where Marco Zuffellato finds much of his inspiration. Galerie Peter Vann / S-chanf ESSENZIELLES AUF AUGENHÖHE Die Galerie wurde von Peter Vann gegründet, da hatte er mit seiner ikonografischen Automobilfotografie längst Weltgeltung erlangt. Das war 2006. Nun nach etwas mehr als drei Jahren mit Galerie-Stammhaus samt Dependance in S-chanf und Ausstellungsräumen im Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains in St.Moritz hat sich das künstlerische Spektrum in mehrfacher Hinsicht erweitert: Hier Peter Vann, der Landschaftsfotograf im Engadin, mit den Serien Essenz des Augenblicks und – aktuell mit einer Sonderausstellung im Suvretta House – mit der Serie «Auf Augenhöhe», dort Werke der Künstler Michel Scarpa, Manuel Geerinck und Didier Hagège. In diesem Winter zeigt die Galerie Peter Vann in S-chanf eine Sammlung neuer Zeichnungen sowie Malerei des Wahl-New Yorkers Manuel Geerinck unter dem Titel «Zwischen Fantasie und Figuration». Und: Wer Peter Vann als Landschaftsfotograf im Engadin kennen und schätzen gelernt hat, wird sein Spektrum erweitert sehen. Ein neues Sujet veranlasste ihn zu den «Stamm Bildern: Vom Licht zur Struktur». Bäume aus den Wäldern im Umfeld Berlins komponiert er zu einer Fixation landschaftlicher Stille, die dennoch vielfältige Assoziationen zum Gären bringt.

When Peter Vann opened this gallery in 2006, he had long earned world prominence with his iconographic car photography. Now, a little over three years later, with the main gallery in S-chanf and exhibits in the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains in St.Moritz, the artistic spectrum has broadened: on one end is Peter Vann, landscape photographer in the Engadine, with the series “Essence of the Moment” and «At Eyelevel», currently featured in a special exhibit in the Suvretta House; on the other end are works by artists Michel Scarpa, Manuel Geerinck and Didier Hagège. Peter Vann in S-chanf will be showing a collection of new drawings and paintings by New York resident Manuel Geerinck, titled «Between Fantasy and Figuration». Those who already appreciate Peter Vann’s Engadine landscape photography will see his own spectrum has also broadened. A new motif inspired him to «Trunk Pictures: From Light to Structure». Trees from the forests around Berlin are composed to still landscapes prompting a range of associations.
