Dear Guests It gives me great pleasure to welcome you once again to the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. This is a special year for us, as the world’s best and most prestigious polo tournament on snow is celebrating its 30-year anniversary. 1985 was the very first time that polo was played on the frozen and snow-covered Lake St. Moritz. From humble beginnings has blossomed the world’s most prominent and highest-level winter polo tournament. Like parents proud of their successful children, so too am I of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. For 15 years, exactly half of the tournament’s existence, we have been organising this magnificent venture, and have succeeded in making the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow an internationally renowned event. We are proud of our ability to attract competitors from all five continents; as we are currently the only high-goal tournament on snow in the scope of the World Polo Tour, this allows us to feature four high-goal teams with impressive handicaps ranging from 15 to 18 goals. They will be representing Cartier, Deutsche Bank, Ralph Lauren and BMW – all sponsors of impeccable pedigree. This promises superior sport, as well as thrilling and absorbing duelling, as each team seeks to claim the largest slice of the birthday cake: the coveted Cartier Trophy. Above all, I owe the highest gratitude to all those who have contributed to the success of this tournament in the Upper Engadin alpine region. Without our local partners and the volunteers from the region, the support of the local authorities and the commitment of our global partners, this tournament on the frozen Lake St. Moritz would not have made it into its 30th year. In this alpine setting we are, without a doubt, heavily dependent on the weather, as each year, low temperatures are required to ensure the appropriate snow and ice cover. Special attention must also be paid to the well-being of the polo ponies to ensure that these four-legged athletes are well-equipped to cope with the extreme conditions, as they endeavour to deliver consistently outstanding performances. The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow shall continue to be a shining example of high prestige and excellent sport, but just as importantly, of ecological sustainability and the responsible and appropriate handling of horses.

Richard Davis

After last year’s success, having been named the World Polo Tour Most Valuable Amateur Player for January 2013, Richard Davis returns to the snow with his trusty teammates Tarquin Southwell (4) and Jonny Good (5) as patron of BMW. John-Paul Clarkin, with the highest handicap of the tournament (8), completes the quartet. Playing with a 0-goal handicap, Davis and his two teammates broadened their experience in snow polo by playing both in St. Moritz and at the Valartis Bank Snow Polo World Cup in Kitzbühel, where he was patron for the winning team of Audi.

From snow to the lush British countryside, Davis competed at various tournaments during the 2013 British season with his team Clashleigh. Having placed second at the John Prestwich 8 to 12 Goal Challenge Trophy at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in May, Davis went on to compete in a 12-goal tournament at Coworth Park last summer – The Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy, in memory of the well-known polo photographer and writer. Following this, Davis played in the JaegerLeCoultre Autumn Cup in September, the final event of the British season, at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

Jonathan Munro Ford

An avid Australian patron and part of the team that won the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2013, Jonathan Munro Ford returns to the snow as patron for Team Cartier, playing with a 0-goal handicap. In addition to the success of 2012, having won the majority of the low- and medium-goal competitions at Guards Polo Club with his team Black Eagles, Munro Ford was also quite successful in 2013. Having begun the year on snow at St. Moritz, Munro Ford headed to the heat of the desert as patron of team CNN competing in the 8th Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge at the Desert Palm Resort. Moving to slightly cooler sands, Munro Ford competed at the HPA National Club Championship arena polo at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club,

where he won best string of the tournament. In June, he won the Laureus Polo Cup, a charity polo match at Guards Polo Club, with his team Mercedes-AMG. The Laureus Polo Cup is an acclaimed event on the British polo calendar and raises money for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Munro Ford retained his title at The Fox & Hounds Social Cup with his team Black Eagles, earning his 6th victory at Guards Polo Club last summer. He then went on to compete in the JaegerLeCoultre Autumn Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club to end the British season. This year Jonathan Munro Ford is back to defend his title alongside six-goal players Max Charlton, MVP of last year’s tournament Chris Hyde and Hissam Ali Hyder.

Karan Thapar

Making his debut on snow with a 0-goal handicap, Karan Thapar arrives at St. Moritz as patron of Deutsche Bank with his teammates Ryan Pemble (5), Oliver Hipwood (5) and Glen Gilmore (7). Thapar brings an array of high-goal experience to the snow this year having competed in a variety of tournaments around the world during an eventful 2013, as patron of his team EFG Bank Aravali. During the British season, Thapar competed alongside some of the world’s top players. In June, they reached the quarterfinal of the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Played at Guards Polo Club, this is one of the most notorious tournaments in England. Thapar also played in the Coworth Park Challenge

on the grounds where the English national team trains at Coworth Park, Dorchester Collection’s country house hotel and spa in Ascot. Thapar also competed in the Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup alongside England national team player and teammate Mark Tomlinson. The impressive trophy, traditionally presented by HM The Queen, is the premier mediumgoal tournament on the English polo calendar and has been played at Guards Polo Club since the Club‘s inaugural year 1955 and continues to attract the leading players of the sport. This year, Thapar takes on a new challenge, embracing the sport of kings in the most extreme environment known to this discipline.

Michael Bickford

With a handicap of 1 goal, Michael Bickford is the highest-handicapped patron in the tournament. With extensive experience in arena polo, Bickford made his debut on snow in 2013. His team Cold Smoke won the Arena Gold Cup in 2010 and 2012, as well as the Arena Silver Cup in 2011 at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. However, 2012 was also a challenging year with Bickford sustaining a broken collarbone at the arena High Goal Challenge at Hickstead. Despite this setback, Bickford came to St. Moritz in 2013 as patron of Team Ralph Lauren. He then went on to enjoy a very successful year with his

team La Indiana both in England and Spain. In June, Bickford and his team won the 18-goal Jaeger-LeCoultre Duke of Sutherland Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club and won the Apsley Cup at Cirencester Park Polo Club. La Indiana then went on to compete in the medium goal at the Santa MarĂa Polo Club in Sotogrande. Combining a wealth of arena skill and grass speed, Bickford is now playing his second tournament on snow as the leader of Team Ralph Lauren, accompanied by Australian top player Ruki Baillieu (7), Nacho Figueras (6) from Argentina and Jamie Morrison (3) from Great Britain.

30-YEAR ANNIVERSARY | 15

The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 30 years of history from its beginning to the present day

The period from 30 January to 2 February 2014 – when the world’s polo elite convene on the frozen Lake St. Moritz to compete for the coveted Cartier Trophy – marks the 30-year anniversary of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. The three founders of the tournament – Reto Gaudenzi, Gianni Berry and Hans Peter Danuser – could not in their wildest dreams have imagined that they would start a worldwide trend when they staged the first winter

polo tournament on the frozen Lake St. Moritz in the 1980s. Now, 30 years on from the world premiere, snow polo is played across the globe – from Cortina in Italy and Aspen in America to Tianjin in China. Today, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is the most prestigious and highest-level winter polo tournament on snow, attracting over 12,000 spectators to the cosmopolitan town of St. Moritz each year – which is reason enough to take a look back.

16

founded the St. Moritz Polo Club in 1959 – with the then owner of the Palace Hotel Andrea Badrutt, Christian Mathis and spa resort director Peter Kaspar – to hold international polo tournaments in the Engadin. Between 1961 and 1964, tournaments were contested among teams from Argentina, Italy, the USA and England. A temporary end was brought to polo in St. Moritz when the polo field was unceremoniously converted into a high-altitude training camp for athletes in the run-up to the Summer Olympics in Mexico City,” states Gianni Berry during the interview. First summer tournament poster

The first St. Moritz Polo Team It all began in the heat of Andalusia. That the frozen Lake St. Moritz would become the stage for a world premiere, and thus the birthplace of winter polo, is thanks to two Engadin equestrian sportsmen, as one of the founders, Gianni Berry, explains: ”Reto Gaudenzi and I were both working in the hotel industry in Marbella, and spending most of our free time in the nearby Polo Club in Sotogrande. That’s where we put together the first St. Moritz polo team after retired British officers and local polo players had introduced us to the art of the game. They had a field day with us mountain folk.” Back home, gripped by polo fever, the pair founded the first Swiss National Polo Team with Nikki Hahn and Uberto Gasche in 1983. ”With this line-up we competed in various international tournaments, until it was time to bring polo back to St. Moritz. After all, the polo tradition was already there. The first polo field was laid out as early as 1899 in St. Moritz Bad, when members of the British cavalry would play polo both as part of their military training and to while away the time. However, it was 60 years after the officers had been drafted to South Africa due to the Boer War before my father, Dr Peter Robert Berry, spa doctor in St. Moritz and horse enthusiast,

Much obliged to the British Berry and Gaudenzi were not the only ones forging plans to revive polo in St. Moritz in the early 1980s. Newcomer to the post of St.  Moritz spa resort director Hans Peter Danuser was making preparations for the Cresta Club’s centennial celebrations, and began the search for a new event with British roots. The idea to organise a winter polo tournament came up during lunch after a meeting of the Cresta team’s organisational committee. “Even back then we said that St. Moritz wasn’t just a ski resort. Thanks to Bob, Cresta and the British influence we have much more to offer our visiting tourists. That’s why I thought right from the start that the idea of a polo tournament was perfect to market St. Moritz. But when I started approaching people who had staged summer polo tournaments in the 1960s they just dismissed the idea, saying it would never work. Only one person really got behind the idea: Reto Gaudenzi.” The idea is officially born However, a winter tournament on snow was not enough, adds Berry: “We wanted to hold it on the frozen Lake St. Moritz, so we did a first test run in 1984. Our ‘test horses’ from the riding hall had never seen a polo stick before, and put on a real rodeo as one might have expected. There were also still a few things to try out and fine-tune as far as equipment and rules

were concerned. But despite all that, one thing had become clear: polo on snow works!” To mark the participation of the St. Moritz polo team in a Munich tournament in the summer of 1983, to which resort director Hans Peter Danuser had travelled specially to promote St.  Moritz as tourist destination, the three founders broke the news to the gathered press: “St. Moritz announces world premiere: polo on snow” read the headlines in the Bavarian press the next day. There was no turning back now.

ment via telephone conference with the words ‘ça marche’.” To this day Cartier remains a loyal sponsor of the tournament. The founders certainly demonstrated real ingenuity in raising the required funds for the tournament. “We even auctioned off plots of ice on the frozen Lake St. Moritz at the first polo gala. Dividends were distributed in the form of drinks at the Carlton Hotel’s polo bar,” laughs Gianni Berry, recalling the daring adventure they had all embarked upon with their idea.

Precious jewels and melting shares “Without Reto Gaudenzi, who even back then already had excellent contacts and tremendous sales talent, we would never have been able to convince so many people of the viability of the idea of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow,” insists Hans Peter Danuser. “He was also the one who got Cartier on board as the main sponsor,” adds Gianni Berry, going on to recall: “I remember as though it were yesterday, Reto and I were standing in the office at Cartier and their president Alain Dominique Perrin assured us of his commit-

on snow, was replaced by a slightly larger, inflatable polo ball. Bright orange was decided upon for the colour of the ball to enable it to be seen from a distance in the hoof-churned snow. The biggest concern, however, was how the polo ponies would react to the unfamiliar white ’turf’. The high speeds and sudden turns which are decisive during polo games meant the founders had really struck gold upon discovering Peppino Cattaneo’s invention. The bon vivant and extreme sportsman had developed a special hoof grip that prevents lumps of snow and ice forming on the sole of the hoof so that he could really put his Hungarian gelding through its paces in winter. The Cattaneo Huf Grip is still used for snow ponies to this day and ensures improved safety for amateur riders in winter. An unexpected opposition front and a VIP tent for the ponies The preparations were well underway, every trick in the marketing book of that time was being used to promote the event and an army of volunteers had been deployed, including local resident Daniela Aerni-Bonetti, member of the organisational committee since 1985 and to this day the official timekeeper on the tower. “In the run-up to the event pretty much everything was an unknown. We couldn’t

build on established structures and fields of responsibility like we can today. Everyone just got on with it – improvisation was the order of the day.” But the biggest challenge emerged in the form of animal rights activists trying to get the event banned. They were concerned that the warm-blooded horses, soaked with sweat after each chukka, would catch a cold in temperatures of –10 to –20ºC. On the advice of the veterinarians who were also responsible for the animals’ well-being at the annual winter horse races, it was decided to erect a tent on the lake to shield the horses from the elements. The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow was also breaking new ground in this respect, as there had never been a tent on the lake before. Thus, Reto Mathis, who still today sees to the culinary side of things, was not alone with his small catering tent, being joined by the first ever VIP tent for ponies. Battling snowstorms and sceptics Things didn’t bode well on the inaugural day of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow – 50 centimetres of snow had fallen during the night of 25 January 1985. Visibility was poor, an icy wind was blowing and the snow was unrelenting. The successful staging of the first Polo World Cup on Snow – and further annual events – was hanging in the balance. That is,

until Reto Gaudenzi got up and instigated a mass snow-clearing operation. Urs E. Schwarzenbach

A new era The oldest and most high-profile winter polo tournament has become larger and more professional over the years. The pony tent on the lake has since been joined by a real tent village offering a wide variety of culinary delights, exhibitions, shops and a large VIP tent. The tournament’s tale took a real quantum leap when Urs E. Schwarzenbach assumed responsibility for organising the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. “I didn’t hesitate for a second when the opportunity to assume responsibility for the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow presented itself in 1999,” he explains. “At that time, the organisation was having financial difficulties, and it would have been a real pity to me if the polo games could no longer have been held on the frozen Lake St. Moritz.” Urs E. Schwarzenbach was elected President of the

St. Moritz Polo Club in 2001. A passionate polo player and, at that time, owner of the high-goal team The Black Bears – whose tradition is today being continued by his son Guy – Urs E. Schwarzenbach managed to use his extensive contacts to attract even more top-class players and distinguished guests to St. Moritz. The constant rise of the teams’ handicaps has also earned a growing international reputation, leading to bigger crowds and increased media interest. Now, 30 years on from the first St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow, the tournament is the highlight of the winter polo season, a fixture in the calendars of polo fans across the globe – and being able to take part at least once is the dream of every professional player.

For the welfare of the ponies Markus Müller has been the veterinarian at the Polo World Cup on Snow for 30 years now.

Thirty years ago, the idea of playing polo not just on snow, but on the frozen Lake St. Moritz seemed a very reckless undertaking. Consequently, the best and most expensive polo ponies were not available for the first attempts. Once the team captains and players had gained positive experiences playing against the wintry mountain backdrop, however, they began to bring ever stronger and more talented ponies with them to St. Moritz.

Markus Müller

Since the very first time the tournament was held, in January 1985, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow has had Markus Müller as its official veterinarian. “Polo has developed tremendously over the last 30 years,” says the equine vet and sports horse specialist in response to the question of how the current tournament differs from its beginnings. “At that time, playing polo on snow and ice was considered very daring. Now, however, the Polo World Cup on Snow is an established event, and this is also reflected in the quality of the ponies used to play.”

For playing polo on snow, you need extremely fit, fully trained ponies, because physical activity at alpine altitude is strenuous, and galloping in the snow saps energy. That is no different for horses than it is for people. Both four-legged and two-legged beings are able to move more easily on a hard surface than on a soft layer of snow. “On hard snow, a game of polo is much faster than on soft snow,” says Müller. A thick, compact surface that is not too hard thus offers the best conditions, as far as he is concerned. It absorbs the forces that play on the horses’ legs, and reduces the pace. “The risk of an accident occurring is highest in a fast game on a hard surface,” says Müller. He is glad that, for the sake of their horses, the players do not push them too hard in such conditions. “In the history of the tournament, there has never been a serious accident; no pony has ever been seriously injured.” This is one reason why the vet can look back in satisfaction on his work so far at the Polo World Cup on Snow, and has no horror stories to tell. There have, however, been minor aches and pains and injuries to deal with. Polo is a competitive team sport in which the competitors chase after the ball at full gallop, fighting for

it pony to pony. “It can happen that they trip over each other’s feet,” says Müller. For the horses, this can lead to ball or coronet injuries. These are abrasions or small wounds at the intersection of the hoof and the horse’s leg. Müller once also had to stitch a laceration to a pony’s head because it had been hit by a polo stick in the heat of the fight. “These are all things that we can treat immediately on site, without hospitalisation,” says the specialist. Besides Müller, the veterinary team includes Anton Milicevic, whose practice in Sils is easily reached in the event of an emergency. The mobile practice of Marcus Schneider, who has complemented the veterinary team at the Polo World Cup on Snow for several years now, is also very well equipped. If required, he can X-ray a horse on site on the lake.

oration with St. Moritz Polo Corporation, he has worked out a series of pioneering guidelines for handling polo ponies. These comply with Swiss laws on animal protection, which are very progressive in comparison with other countries, and they ensure that the horses are prepared weeks in advance for their deployment in the Engadin. Every team entering the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow also has to designate a responsible coach.

So the veterinarians are well armed to face an emergency. However, they also put great emphasis on preventive care. For this, Müller does not simply rely solely on the professional polo players bringing fit and healthy ponies to the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. In collab-

Müller discusses the prescribed standards for the horses’ welfare with each coach. One standard is, for example, that no pony is permitted to take part under the influence of medication. Doping is of course absolutely forbidden at the Polo World Cup on Snow. “We as vets, St. Moritz Polo Corporation as the organiser, and the coaches as representatives of the teams all work together very well,” Müller concludes. “When it comes down to it, we all share the same goal. We want to experience fantastic, interesting polo, and we can only do that if we have fit and healthy ponies.”

When only the best is good enough A Swiss Caviar Brand – pursuing perfection

For 5,000 years, caviar has been firmly anchored as a delicacy in almost every great culture and has been produced unchanged for centuries. In ancient Greece, caviar was introduced at banquets by fanfares, and in Roman literature it is described that a bowl of caviar cost as much as a hundred lambs. The Persians in turn used caviar as a medicine and the Russian tsars considered caviar to be ”the food of the gods“. Raised in the wild and environmentally friendly In 2011, the U.N. prohibited the harvesting of wild sturgeons and consequently the trade of “wild caviar“. In contrast, ZwyerCaviar‘s sturgeons and salmons grow up in an unspoilt natural landscape in a largely untouched environment. The sustainably run aqua-farms meet the highest health and quality standards. Central is the aim of producing the world’s best delicacies true to nature. The emphasis is clearly on quality and not quantity and this makes the award-winning caviar and Zwyer‘s new Ultra-Premium Salmon Fillet from the crystal clear fjords of Scandinavia a genuine rarity.

Culinary summit with three of the nation’s top chefs 53 Gault Millau points gala dinner

In the searing heat of the battle for the points, forks and stars essential for any restaurant’s reputation, elite chefs used to guard their secrets zealously. The modern generation have become much more open and are happy to exchange ideas and give each other inspiration. Thus, for the 30th anniversary of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow, a gourmet joint venture is being undertaken: three of Switzerland’s finest chefs will be responsible for the gala meal. The Swiss star chef Andreas Caminada, chef de cuisine at his own hotel and restaurant Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau, invites you to the summit. Together with Tanja Grandits, the grande dame of the gastronomy scene and Gault Millau‘s Swiss Chef of the Year 2014 from Restaurant Stucki in Basel and Gault Millau‘s Discovery of the Year 2011 Nenad Mlinarevic from the gourmet restaurant ”focus“ in Park Hotel Vitznau, he will take you on an unprecedented culinary journey for the senses. Every course of the four-course gala meal bears the signature of its inventor: the first course by Grandits, the second course by Mlinarevic and the dessert by Caminada. The most unique aspect of this gala dinner, and something that can be regarded as the first of its kind, is the main course, a collaborative creation that was devised and prepared in perfect harmony by three pairs of hands. The official premiere of the dish will form the highlight of this year’s gala.

A short introduction to polo Ponies and safety first At first sight, polo looks fairly simple. However, the written rules of the game, governing all the moves and rights of way, are myriad. The safety of the ponies and their riders is paramount and given the highest priority, in addition to balanced, competitive and fluid play. To give a broad understanding of polo, and make it possible to follow the game, the main rules are outlined on these pages.

Teams Each team consists of four players. Number 3 is usually the captain, who organises the team. Number 4, also known as ”back”, is responsible for defence, while the other two players are attackers. Handicap Depending on ability, each polo player plays with a handicap ranging from –2 to +10. While the entry level of –2 denotes a beginner, very few players in the world hold the highest possible handicap of +10, and most of these are Argentinians – such as Pablo MacDonough. A player‘s handicap is reviewed annually, according to his performance. When a team is put together, the handicaps of the four individual players are added up to give the team handicap. Tournament Tournaments are promoted in various classes of play (low, medium or high goal), and the handicaps of the teams must correspond to these. If teams of different handicaps play against each other, the difference is made up by allocating the appropriate number of goals to one team.

The field Polo can be played on practically any level field of sufficient size. The ground must be firm and constantly maintained. The official international dimensions of a polo field are 182 metres wide by 274 metres long. Polo on snow is played on smaller fields, as the physical strain of playing winter polo, mostly at higher altitudes, is greater for the ponies than in summer polo on grass. The goal has uprights but no crossbar, and is 7.3 metres wide.

Chukka Depending on the organisation of the tournament, a polo match consists of four, five or six time periods known as chukkas. In high-goal snow polo, a match normally consists of four chukkas, each lasting 7.5 minutes. The last chukka of the game lasts exactly seven minutes. A pony can be played in no more than two chukkas in any one match, and not in consecutive chukkas. If polo

THE RULES OF POLO | 31

is played on grass, at half-time there is a fiveminute break, during which the spectators are asked to walk on to the field and “tread in“ the divots of turf carved up by the ponies‘ hooves. Direction of play The game has one tradition, which always confuses newcomers to polo. Whenever a goal is scored, the direction of play switches. The rule traces its origin to the hotter climes of the empire on which the sun never set. Playing against a low and dazzling sun put one team at a decisive disadvantage. The rule also prevents excessive damage to the turf at the weaker team‘s goal mouth due to one-way play.

Line of the ball The fundamental and most important rule of the sport of polo is known as the “Right of Way“ (ROW). Whenever the ball is in play, a right of way exists and is always deemed to be held by the player who is established on, or at the closest angle to, the “Line of the Ball“ (LOB = the extended path along which the ball has travelled, or is travelling). No other player may enter or cross this ROW. Players may not position or check their ponies over the line if this poses the slightest risk of collision with the player who currently has ROW. “Hooking“ and “riding off“ The player with ROW can only lose ROW by being “ridden off“ or “hooked“. “Hooking“ means using the stick to prevent the other player from retrieving or striking the ball.

This is done by blocking the opponent‘s stick during a swing or while the other player is tapping or dribbling the ball. It is forbidden to hook over the body of the opponent‘s pony. “Riding off“ means trying to force an opponent off course, who is riding parallel, similar to a body check, so that the player can no longer hit the ball. “Riding off“ is allowed, provided it takes place parallel, and not at an angle, to the player who has ROW. Tapping techniques In principle, the ball is tapped on the right side of the pony, known as the “offside“. Tapping takes place in a forward (offside forehand) or backward (offside backhand) direction. For a “nearside“ play, which takes place on the pony‘s left side, the player has to twist in the saddle and, still holding the stick in his right hand, bring it to the other side of the pony. Nearside forehand and nearside backhand are the corresponding forward and backward plays. “Under the neck“ refers to strokes performed in front of, or under the neck of, the pony. Among the trickiest manoeuvres are “tail strokes“, performed to the rear of the horse.
