He assumed the reins of the women’s program in the summer of 2014. PREVIEW 2016 The Spring Hill College men’s and women’s tennis teams begin their second season of play in NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in 2016 head coach John Dotson is enthusiastic about his teams’ prospects. “Last year we had a learning experience about our new conference,” Dotson said. “But this year we will be more familiar with the schedule and opponents, so that should translate into a good season.” On the men’s side, Dotson sees his squad as being very competitive in the SIAC. “Our men should be strong and deep enough to make the adjustments that will be needed this season,” he says. “I like the mix of this team. We have a good combination of American and International styles of play and the players have really come together as a team. They are learning about each other and each other’s cultures.” Senior Alejandro Hastings Oro from Mexico City will start on the No. 1 singles court while fellow senior Sebastian Arias of Dorado, Puerto Rico, and sophomore Lars Bajohr of Versmold, Germany, will share time in the Nos. 2 and 3 courts. Junior Martin Jaramillo of Manizales, Columbia, and sophomore Nick Cruz of Foley, Ala., will battle for the Nos. 4-5 spots with sophomore Andrew Risley from Ocean Springs, Miss., along with freshmen Ferdinand Amanor of Murphy High School in Mobile, Joel Fonseca from Hahnville, La., and Matthew Pinto Ocean Springs. “The doubles situation will be very fluid at the start of the year as we work on team chemistry,” say Dotson. Dotson’s ladies’ team has much more experience than the 2015 squad, but it still faces some growing pains in the new year. “The women’s squad will play hard,” he says. “But we are thin on numbers this year and won’t have much room for adjustments.” In singles play, sophomores Maria Hastings Oro of Mexico City and Elizabeth Peters of St. Louis, Mo., will continue to make an impact. “I am are excited to see how Hastings and Peters will perform this year,” Dotson says. “They were nice additions to the team last season and should only be better this year.” Senior Chandler Burkenstock of Mandeville, La., along with juniors Allison Gmelich of St. Louis, Kate Sotolongo from Kenner, La., and Heather Sutton of Faith Academy in Mobile look to solidify the Badger line up while freshmen Madison Artigues of New Orleans, La., and Brenda Carrada of Mexico City will be strong additions to the squad. Spring Hill tennis will face a tough schedule in 2016, but that is the way Dotson planned it. “I wanted to add some higher competition this year as measuring sticks to see how we’ve improved and where we need to improve,” he says. “It will be an interesting year, but our players are fitting into their roles, so I’m excited to get started.”
