BOWLING PREVIEW 2017-18
A
s Spring Hill College prepares for the new bowling season, head coach Ben Hoefs is excited to approach the lanes. “The players have really rallied together,” he says. “We’ve come a long way since the founding of the program five years ago.” Hoefs returns two teams that feature both the experience of veterans and the enthusiasm of newcomers. “What we now need to do is begin to develop the leadership of our upperclassmen,” says Hoefs. “Bowling is about constantly watching how the ball rotates going down the lane, watching how the oil of the lane is breaking down, knowing the oil pattern of the lane and then adjusting your game or the equipment to match those changes and we have to adjust as teams.” For the men’s team, Hoefs sees his starting line-up as a solid core of players. “Of course, we’ll adjust the line-up according to a variety of factors including lane conditions, but I’m very pleased with the consistency of this group,” he says. Senior Brian Bodenheimer of Kenner, La., will lead off, followed by freshman Zach Ward, senior Jackson Harris of Dothan, Ala., and sophomore Chris McNeeley. “In the Baker system of scoring, the leadoff bowler should be very consistent,” says Hoefs. “He’s the person who teammates watch to see how the lane is reacting. The fourth and fifth bowlers should be the big strike throwers, but right now I’m stressing that we always need to ‘fill the frame’ – meaning we need to knock down all 10 pins in every frame no matter how we accomplish it.” Freshman Joe Spires from Biloxi, Miss., and junior Zachary Griffin will fight for positions throughout the year along with senior Curtis Westmoland of Prairieville, La., junior Steve Wozniak of Covington, La., and junior Kameron Powell from Chicago, Ill. Sophomore
Allen Wilkerson of Ocean Springs, Miss., as well as freshmen Chandler Dupuy of New Orleans, La., and Anthony Osburn from Mary G. Montgomery High School in Mobile will also see action throughout the season depending on lane conditions and tournament format. The SHC women’s team faces the same challenges as the men, but Hoefs adds that the team has an experience core. “I’m teaching our women’s team to play the same part of the lane every time out,” he says. “This is where we need to be smart bowlers and learn how to communicate with each other during the match.” Freshman Avery Laughlin of Prairieville will lead things off for the Badgers followed by junior Anna Tankersley from Madison, Ala. Next up will be freshman Meghan Amador of Morgan City, La., with freshman Danielle Cox and senior Courtney Wagoner from Hinesville, Ga, closing out the line-up. Senior Caoilinn Murphy of Springberg, Ohio, will also be a key player for SHC as the season progresses. “Some of our players are all very young, but they are asking the right questions and they are very good listeners,” says Hoefs. “I’ve changed many of them to new equipment and altered some grips and mechanics, but they have all accepted the changes and seen improvements in their games as a result.” Senior Erianna Roy of New Orleans, junior transfer Alexandria Paolo of Hillsboro, Ore., and sophomore Kristian Connelly from Memphis, Tenn., will also provide Hoefs with valuable weapons in his arsenal of choices Overall, Hoefs and his Badger Bowlers are eager to begin this year’s campaign. “It’s will be a transition year as we move from being a young team into an experience veteran program,” Hoefs says. “But our players have really bought into the process and formed a cohesive unit.”
