Steve Kittrell takes the reins as the head coach of the Badgers. Kittrell takes over a team

dominated by youth but extremely motivated. “We’re a fairly young team,” he says. “So we’re going to have to experiment with our lineup

in the early parts of the season by getting a lot of people in the game and in a lot of different positions. With that said, the players all have great attitudes, work ethics and character.”

Kittrell admits that his infield has suffered

some early injuries and may not be the lineup he originally penciled into position, but he

is confident in his squad. Freshman Caroline

ic Conference (SIAC) All-Conference Relief La., looking to move into the starting slot

backed up by Brenton. Red shirt freshman

Julia Waters of Newark, Del., and freshman

Tiffany Hughes from Gulf Shores, Ala., will also see time in the circle as needed this season.

The outfield appears to be in solid hands

with Johnson having staked her claim to

left field and senior veteran Brooke Vosloh

of Destrehan, La., moving into center field. “Vosloh is providing the senior leadership

that we need on both offense and defense,”

Kittrell says. “It’s important for a young team to have direction and Brooke is really step-

ping up to that responsibility.” Right field will

athletic player,” Kittrell says. Freshman Brittany playing time on the left side of the infield, es-

pecially in the early stages of the season while sophomore outfielder Sarah Johnson from

Eunice, La., might also serve on the infield as the season progresses.

On the right side, freshman Delaney

Thomas out of Baker High School in Mobile will handle the duties at second base, but

Kittrell expects to have her play shortstop if

needed. “Our youth and health will alter our

lineup as we approach each game,” he says.

“But our players are all willing to do whatever

we need and that attitude is key.” Senior Randi DeArmitt from Metairie, La., is scheduled to

cover first base, but freshman Hannah Brenton from Mobile (Ala.) Christian School will share time in the role if DeArmitt is asked to step

into another position. Behind the plate, junior Aly Fowler of Dripping Springs, Texas, moves

into the starting job, but Kittrell says that sophomore Cassidy Mehr from Tallahassee, Fla.,

will share the duties.

Badger pitching will feature depth this

experiment we will have to conduct over the Fairchild of Defiance, Ohio, will be the wild

card in Kittrell’s deck covering whatever role

he needs. “Fairchild is the definition of a utility player,” he says. “She’s versatile enough to

play both infield and outfield, so that’s going to be important for us until we can figure out where all of our pieces fit together.”

Despite the uncertainty of the early

lineup, Kittrell is ready to get the year started. “The key to this year will be getting healthy

and staying healthy,” he says. “Right now we have several players out of position, but our

pitching and defense are still very strong. Our offense is swinging the bats well, but we must be good in our execution and move runners along when we get the opportunity.”

With no true starters back from the 2017

campaign, Kittrell falls back on one of his

favorite old sayings. “At South Alabama, I used to say our goal is to be better in April than we

were in March,” he says. “And that’s absolutely true this year, so we’re excited to get the sea-

son started and begin our great experiment.”
