with a fashion column in The SpringHillian
Rae McConville, a journalism major from Atlanta, was only a freshman when she wrote for the student newspaper. But, her writing ability and propensity for style caught the attention of the publisher of Gulf Coast Bride, a bridal magazine that was just getting off the ground in Fairhope, Ala. While still a student at Spring Hill, she served as the magazine’s fashion editor for the next two years. During the spring semester of her junior year, Rae secured a sevenmonth internship at Harper’s Bazaar Magazine in New York City. Because of the connections she made through her internship, she was offered a job as market assistant at InStyle Magazine before she even graduated. “I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” she says. “So, I don’t think I would have ended up where I am today if I hadn’t gone to Spring Hill and had the experiences I did.” In 2011, Rae heard an HGTV Magazine might be in the works. She passed along her resume to everyone she knew and landed a job as an assistant editor. For the past two years, she has assisted the editorin-chief and created two signature columns for the magazine: “Wow! What Color Is That?” about paint colors, and “Don’t Buy It. DIY It,” featuring blogger profiles and project how-tos. She says, “It was a challenge to get used to juggling so much all day long, but in the end I was rewarded.” Rae was recently promoted to associate home editor at HGTV Magazine. In her new role, she continues to produce her signature columns and writes DIY and makeover stories that inspire readers. “Basically, that means I get to go to flea markets and shop Craigslist (on someone else’s dime) and create beautiful new things,” she says. Rae also works with interior designers and bloggers to find homes to feature, covers the paint and textile market, and helps to produce eye-catching magazine covers. “I’m really lucky that I get to do what I love every day,” she says. “I recognize how rare that is and feel super blessed that this is my life.”

e n g ag e d leadership rep. carlos trujillo ’04 House Representative in Florida, District 105 (R)
Carlos Trujillo ’04 cites his exceptional Jesuit education as a key reason for his success as a Miami attorney and state politician. Trujillo, the youngest person ever to be elected to Florida’s House of Representatives in 2010, adds that his experience as student government vice president at Spring Hill College helped cultivate his interest in the economy and law. A Long Island native, Trujillo went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Florida State University College of Law in 2007. The married father of two says that while he often spent his youth doing service work, he didn’t imagine a career in state legislature. “Throughout high school I was an active member of the Key Club and I often volunteered in charitable opportunities in my community; however, I never thought I would be involved heavily in public service,” he says. Trujillo recalls his most humbling experience as walking into the House chamber on the first day of session and being sworn into office by Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Ricky Polston. Since that time, Trujillo has found his position both exciting and rewarding. “First, I enjoy being able to directly help constituents,” he says. “Secondly, I take great pride in crafting effective policy that will benefit not only my constituents but all residents of the State of Florida.”

Leading the badger pack Shaniqua “Sha Sha” Buchanan ’14 Communications, Mobile, AL Shaniqua Buchanan is a force to be reckoned with on the court. A two-sport superstar and recipient of the Skip Viragh Athletic Scholarship, she came to Spring Hill from Mobile’s McGill-Toolen Catholic High School to play for the Lady Badgers volleyball and basketball teams. Sha Sha, as her teammates call her, is a three-time SSAC All-Conference and two-time All-West Division selection. Sha Sha learned that in order to be a successful student-athlete, she would need to put just as much work into her studies as she does her athletic training. “My professors really pushed me to be a better student-athlete by putting more time and effort into my work,” she says. “Over the course of my academic career, I have learned to manage my time a lot better, and I thank my professors for that because it really has paid off.” A testament to her leadership and newly honed time-management skills, Sha Sha serves as captain of both the women’s volleyball and basketball teams. After graduation, the public relations and advertising major aspires to work in San Diego, Calif., as a publicist for high-profile clients. Something to believe in ricardo pita ’15 Political Science, Miami, FL As incoming president of the Student Government Association, Ricardo Pita believes student involvement is the foundation for a healthy and active campus community. “It is extremely important that SGA promotes and encourages every student to get involved, whether it be by finding and joining an organization or finding a cause in which they can pour their heart into,” he says. Born in Venezuela, Ricardo is passionate about sharing his culture with the Spring Hill community. He leads the Community of Students from Latin America and the Caribbean, a learning community of students dedicated to promoting and celebrating different cultures. A political science major, Ricardo appreciates that Spring Hill professors take the time to get to know him on a personal level. “During class discussions, my professors may promote an ideological debate that may contradict my personal stance on a particular issue to help me see it differently,” he says. “They also make a point of highlighting details that relate to my areas of interest or ask me to contribute a personal take on a matter.” Ricardo volunteers in election campaigns in Venezuela and the U.S., and plans to pursue a doctorate in law and economics after graduation. seeking the
magis
dr. sharee broussard
Associate Professor of Communication Arts
Dr. Sharee Broussard’s
favorite definition of seeking the magis (Latin for “more”) is never settling for mediocrity. She is constantly challenging herself to be a better teacher and professional, and she expects the same level of excellence from her students. “I’ve had students say that the more you know, the more you see and understand and the stronger you are – that’s valuable insight and a testament to the importance of higher education,” she says. “I think the most rewarding aspect of teaching is when students really push themselves to be more or do more than they thought they could.” Broussard is an award-winning researcher, public relations and advertising practitioner, and community volunteer. She has recently facilitated workshops for Airbus, performed qualitative research for Mobile County Health Department’s “Just Breathe” media campaign, and coordinated more than 100 volunteers for ThyssenKrupp’s grand opening events. “I’ve found that being active on and off campus has allowed me to bring value to the classroom in multiple ways,” she says. For example, Broussard solicits local nonprofit agencies to serve as real-world clients for her students’ PR and advertising projects; involves students in professional organizations, events and conferences; and coordinates internships for communication arts and graphic design students at more than 75 organizations. Broussard recently led Spring Hill’s strategic planning and implementation teams, tasked with laying the foundation for the College’s assessment initiative. Faculty and staff members invested more than 12,000 volunteer hours into this important work. “What makes this work valuable,” she says, “is that it helps us to tangibly connect the mission of the College and the goals expressed by the Board of Trustees directly to the work done in departments and classrooms.” As Broussard enters her 10th year of teaching at SHC, she loves watching her students blossom. She says, “Who our students become and they positively contribute to our world as men and women for others makes this profession extremely rewarding.”
