What types of accessibility equipment are available? Stair supports Stair supports provide extra safety and security when going up or down the stairs as you step up or down. The bar can be leant against on the descent down the stairs and used to pull oneself up on the ascent. Depending on which supplier you choose these can be fitted by someone competent in DIY or a fitting service can be arranged.

Stair climbers A stair climber is a less well known solution to getting up and down stairs. It is a portable ‘trolley’ fitted with rotating wheels so that it can be guided up or down stairs. The advantage of a stair climber is that you can take it with you wherever you go. You always need to have someone to guide the stair climber from behind, they do not need to be strong, as the motors of the stair climber do all the work.

Stair lifts A stair lift is a well-known way of staying independent in your home when you start to find that getting up the stairs is not as easy as it used to be. Attached to a rail that is fixed to your stairs, a stair lift can be installed within a matter of hours. There are different seats available to suit different users. Stair lifts are suitable for straight or curved stairs, there is even an outdoor version.

Home lift A home lift seems like a luxury you couldn’t afford – but you’d be surprised - we certainly were! These through-floor lifts can be fitted just about anywhere in your home, with a minimal amount of building work required. A home lift is attractive, discreet and quiet. Home lifts can carry up to two people and there are designs that are suitable for wheelchair users.

Stair Supports If you are a little unsteady on your feet and want extra reassurance when going up or down stairs, then a stair support could be the ideal solution for you or your loved one. This is a less expensive option than a stair or home lift and unlike the stair climber doesn’t require a second person to operate giving you freedom at home to conquer the stairs with ease. At Spring Chicken, we offer two solutions from different partners.

Simple assistance for your stairs StairAID is an innovative, cost effective system that fits easily into your home. It provides you with extra safety and security when going up or down the stairs. The handrail glides freely when released and locks solidly into place by a ratchet system designed specifically for this purpose. The handrail’s unique shape cleverly allows for two types of grip, a lower one for climbing up the stairs, and a higher one for when coming down the stairs. StairAID allows the user to put their full weight onto the extended handrail to support them going up or down the stairs. It really helps you to stay independent and you’ll have no fear of falling. l l l l l l l

StairSteady Ltd. was invented by Sheffield’s Ruth Amos, who won the prestigious ‘Young Engineer for Great Britain’ award for its creation.

Be Steady on the Stairs The StairSteady is a high quality handrail with a supporting rail coming off it that slides when pushed but locks when weight is applied. It acts as a support aid when both ascending and descending the stairs. Your StairSteady will consist of a rail that will be attached to the wall of your stairs and a folding handle. The rail will usually run along the external wall of your flight of stairs. The handle is attached to the rail and this is moving part that will provide you with the support you require. The handle locks in place whenever you put any pressure on it, thus allowing you to have a rest at any point on your stairs safely. It also provides you with a sturdy and secure handle to hold on to as you walk up or down the stairs at your own pace. You will be able to maintain your independence and freedom without compromising on appearance. l l l l l l

Stairclimbers Stairclimbers use a sophisticated brake system to remain safely on each step, as the wheels power up or down to the next step to continue your journey – all without damaging your stairs in any way. A stair climber always needs to be operated by a capable second person, who does not need to be strong, as the stair climber does all the lifting, but who must be steady on their feet to be safe. A stair climber has a distinct advantage because it is portable so you can use it outside the home, or when visiting others.

1

Integral seat stairclimber from £4,500 ex VAT

2

Wheelchair stairclimber from £4,500 ex VAT

Stair climbers with integral seats are suitable for people who need assistance when climbing stairs. The seat is compact and there are steerable front wheels, so it’s incredibly easy to manoeuvre in small spaces and on narrow stairs. There are 2 in 1 combination stairclimbers that convert from an integrated seat into a wheelchair carrier should needs change (also accommodates a motorised wheelchair if needed.)

These stair climbers have the ability to attach a wheelchair to them, so anyone who is in a wheelchair can be helped up or down stairs without the need to transfer. Advice will be given on wheelchair compatibility by both our partners before a home demonstration.

3

Tracked Stair Climbers from £4,500 ex VAT The tracked stair climber manages most wheelchairs. The tracks glide up the stairs with the touch of a button, a great solution requiring minimal effort or management by the user and a smooth comfortable transition for the passenger from start to finish without the need to move from their own chair.

Will I fall off?

FAQs

No – all stair climbers have a lap belt and those with an integrated seat have movable arms so will feel very secure.

This section aims to answer those nagging questions about Stairclimbers– no matter how big or small they may seem. How do stairclimbers work? You stay sitting in your Wheel Chair or integrated seat whilst your carer stands behind the stairclimber to operate the controls as it climbs the stairs. It uses a series of powered motor’s, rotating wheels or Tracks with a sophisticated automatic braking system to climb or descend stairs or steps.

How is the stair climber powered? The stair climber is powered by a rechargeable battery pack that can be removed from the climber and charged by a standard wall plug. The battery needs to be regularly charged.

Does a stairclimber damage my stairs? No, there will be no scratches, carpet damage or tyre marks left on the stairs due to the unique climbing mechanism and abrasion resistant tyres or tracks used by our partners.

Which stairclimber is right for me? At a home visit the assessor will listen to all your requirements and talk to you through your options.

Can I have a stair climber if I have narrow stairs? Yes. At your home visit the assessor will discuss where you want to use it and make sure it is the right choice for you.

Will my stair climber be comfortable to use? The special wheel system means that the ride is smooth and comfortable.

What happens if I no longer need my stair climber? There is a private resale market depending on the age and condition of the stair climber.

Can I rent a stair climber? Yes. For a special event or for a visitor you may only need a stair climber for a short time. In these circumstances a rental arrangement might be best for you. Weekend rental prices begin at £350.

What safety standards should my stair climber have? Stairclimbers carry the CE mark and are tested to current European legislation.

I live alone. Can I use a stairclimber? No. You always need a second person to operate a stair climber, so if you live alone a stairlift or home lift might be better for you.

My partner is not very strong. Can we use a stairclimber? This shouldn’t be a problem. The stair climber has a powerful electric motor that does the lifting. Your partner needs to be able to operate the simple controls, and guide it. We suggest you book a free demonstration so your partner can test it.

Rental options It is possible to rent a stair climber for a day or more, this is ideal if there is a special occasion, like a wedding, or special day out.

Short term rental from £350

Longer term lease from £150 per week

Stairclimbers can be rented for a weekend - Friday to Monday for as little as £350. This may be an option if you are not sure how long you will be needing the stair climber.

If you need a stairclimber for a longer period of time say 12 weeks rentals can be arranged from £150 per week.

Stairlifts There are three main types of stair lift and one of them will usually fit the layout of your staircase. As staircases are all different, your stairlift will be tailored to your particular stairway. Many people believe stair lifts are fitted to the wall but, in fact, they fit to your stairs or steps via a track – which means there is minimal work and no need to redecorate! With easy to use controls, in-built safety features and attractive fold-away seats, we are sure you’ll find a design that is right for you and your home. There are even special seating options if you have limited flexibility in your hips, knees and shoulders. Your stairlift will include a choice of upholstery designs, an easy-to-use seatbelt, easy controls built into the arm, wall controls, plus a selection of optional extras so you can customise it for your needs. If you choose to use one of our partners you can expect an excellent level of service – and no pressure selling - guaranteed!

1

Straight stairs £1,750 - £4,000 ex VAT

2

Curved Stairs £4,000 - £8,000 ex VAT

3

Outdoor Stairs £2,500- £5,000 ex VAT

If you have straight stairs you will be recommended a straight stairlift. This is the easiest and cheapest design to make and install as there is no bending of metal when making the aluminium track. Straight stairlifts can be installed within 4-5 working days from the time you order

You will be recommended a curved stair lift if you have a staircase or landing that bends. The rails have to be custom made to the correct angles and then fixed to the steps of your staircase. Multi storey installations are available, if you need to travel up more than one floor. As it is a more complex process to build and fit a curved stairlift, the cost is higher than a straight stairlift. The time from order to installation is usually within 10-14 working days.

An outdoor stair lift will help you to navigate outside steps more easily. These have been especially designed to withstand the unpredictable British weather all year round! The outdoor rail is straight and can only be fitted to solid concrete, solid wood or metal stairs. It comes with a handy protective cover to keep your stair lift clean and dry when not in use. Unfortunately these are only suitable for straight staircases but are usually fitted within 3 weeks from order. Our trusted partners

What happens if I no longer need my stairlift?

FAQs This section aims to answer those nagging questions about Stairlifts – no matter how big or small they may seem. Do I need a stairlift? Many people who find it difficult to climb the stairs introduce a stairlift to their home to help them get from one floor to another more easily. Stairlifts are much safer than trying to climb the stairs if you have poor mobility. They allow you to live more independently in your home, keeping the energy you would have used climbing the stairs for more interesting pastimes like gardening or playing with grandchildren

How do stairlifts work? Stair lifts consist of a rail, a carriage and a seat. The carriage contains the motor which powers the lift up and down the rail which fits directly to the treads of the stairs (not the wall). The seat sits on top of the carriage and the controls are usually built into the arm.

Are stairlifts easy to control? Yes stairlifts are designed to be really easy to use. The control options need the lightest of touches and can be controlled by hand, wrist or arm, helping those with the most limited of dexterity.

Will I fall off the stairlift? The stairlift has an integral seatbelt that is easy to put on and take off. You will feel very secure while using the stairlift.

What happens if there is a power cut? Stairlifts are powered from rechargeable batteries, this means that in a power cut the stairlift will use its stored energy to continue to function for as many as 6 journeys.

Most reputable companies will remove and dispose of your stairlift if you no longer want it in your home. There may be a charge for this. If your stairlift is fairly new it may be possible for parts of it to be recycled as a reconditioned model, in which case you may be able to recoup a small percentage of the original cost.

What safety standards should my stairlift have? The main UK stairlift standard you should look out for is BS 5776:1996 - British Standard - ‘Specification for powered stairlifts’

Is there a re-sale value for a stairlift? This is an important consideration as there is no re-sale value in a stairlift. Think of them as a fitted kitchen that has been specifically made to fit your kitchen, there will be very few people who will have the identical stairs as you.

I’m worried that I won’t remember what is said at the home visit assessment. It is always best to have someone with you when you have the home assessment. It will give you someone to talk through what was discussed after the visit. After the visit you will be given a detailed written quote which will allow you to consider your options and choose in your own time, if you want to go ahead.

Do I have to pay VAT on my stairlift? If you meet the government criteria for VAT exemption you will not need to pay the VAT on your stairlift. We can asses you when you call to see if you will need to pay VAT, and it will be confirmed at the home visit.

Do I have to pay for my home demonstration? No, home visits and demonstrations are free of charge with no obligation to buy. Having a home visit is the only way to get an accurate cost, as everyone’s house is different. Our partners understand this and are always happy to come out and assess your needs with absolutely no obligation to buy.

What happens if the lift has been left upstairs, and I’m downstairs? This can happen when two or more members of your family use the stairlift. In this situation your assessor will advise you to have two controllers – one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

What happens if something gets in the way of the stairlift while it is moving? Stairlifts have several safety sensors built into them so they will automatically stop if an object is detected in its path.

Will I still be able to use the stairs as normal if I have a stairlift? As long as your staircase is not particularly narrow you should be able to use your stairs as normal.

Home Lifts Once you get over the shock that it is entirely possible to install a through floor lift into an ordinary home – the next thing to think about is what type of lift would suit your needs? Home lifts come in two main types. One can accommodate up to 2 passengers and the other is designed to accommodate one passenger seated in a wheelchair. Home lifts vary in style and can be customised to fit into your home décor. Because these lifts don’t need major fixings to walls or floors, they can be fitted virtually anywhere in a home, making them a real alternative to moving house when the stairs get too much. They take up a very small area, can travel through one floor and can add real value to your home.

1

Lift for up to two passengers Lift & installation from £11,998 to £20,000 inc VAT These lifts are suitable for 2 standing passengers, some models can have a flip down seat so one person can sit. Lifts are also ideal for transporting heavy objects like a vacuum cleaner or precious cargo like a pet!

2

Lift that can take a wheelchair Lift & installation from £13,188 inc VAT These lifts have been designed to take one passenger seated in a wheelchair. A home lift is a great way for for wheelchair users to stay independent in their own home.

What happens if something gets in the way of the lift?

FAQs This section aims to answer those nagging questions about Home Lifts– no matter how big or small they may seem. How much space will the home lift take up? Home lifts come in varying sizes but the smallest has a footprint of just 0.62 square metres (6.74 square feet).

The lifts have a safety mechanism that ensures the lift stops until the obstructions moves e.g. a pet!

How do I control the home lift? The person travelling in the lift controls the lift by pressing buttons in a very similar way to controlling a commercial lift. There is a button for travelling up and a button for travelling down – you only need to press the button once to activate it.

Do I have to pay for my home survey?

Will I have to take out a servicing agreement with the home lift supplier?

No. All home surveys are completely free of charge with no obligation to buy. It is the only way you will find out whether a home lift is right for you, so we suggest you get both our partners to assess your home and discuss which of their products would be best for you.

Our partners offer varying levels of servicing agreements which they will discuss with you at your home visit. What safety standards will my home lift have? It will carry the CE mark and is tested to current European legislation.

Will the lift need to be fitted on a load-bearing wall? Our partners’ lifts work on a system which is a completely self-supporting structure. The weight of the entire structure and lift is carried in compression through the rails into the floor of your home. It does not, therefore, add any extra weight burden on your home and its walls.

What happens if the lift gets stuck?

Can a home lift travel through more than one floor? They only travel through one floor – although you can have more than one home lift if required to get to other floors.

Do home lifts have doors? Yes. The home lifts are fitted with doors.

Will my electricity bill increase dramatically?

Our partners have never experienced this. However the units are not completely sealed so there is constant airflow, and the charge in the batteries would safely return the lift to the ground floor. We recommend regular servicing by the installer to keep your lift in tip-top condition.

You should not notice any significant increase in your bill. The lifts vary slightly in running costs – the cheapest to run delivers 10 journeys for the same cost as boiling your kettle; the most expensive lift to run costs around £2 a month in electricity.

Do I need to use a builder to install my home lift?

Will my home lift have a warranty?

No – both our partners do all the building work for you. This is all included in the quotation given to you after your home assessment.

Our partners offer warranties, which you can extend if you wish. This will all be discussed at the home visit.

What is the lead time if I decide to go ahead with a home lift? It depends on which lift you choose and how customised you want your lift to be, but normally lifts can start to be installed anytime between 3 - 12 weeks from the point you order it. As your home assessment our partner will discuss the lead time for your chosen lift.

What happens if there is a power cut? Will my lift still work? Yes. Home lifts are equipped with a battery backup facility which means your lift will descend to the lower level until the power returns. One of the added extras you might want to consider is paying for an uninterruptable power supply. This gives you enough power to make several trips up and down during a power cut.
