A View From Springfield College

LET OUR SPIRIT MOVE YOURS. Spirit is hard to define, but you know it when you feel it. Spirit can show up in your life in many ways. In an optimistic outlook. The desire to contribute. Respect for others. A sense of responsibility. Spirit is what gets you ready to face the day. It’s feeling pride in your work, never backing down from a challenge, sticking up for the underdog, or simply being helpful. Springfield College runs on spirit, like some kind of super-octane jet fuel. Only this fuel never runs out. In fact, the more you use, the more you get in return.

“AT FRESHMAN CAMP, WE ALL GO TO THE CHAPEL OF THE PINES, WHICH IS KIND OF A SPIRITUAL PLACE FOR EVERYONE. WE WALK DOWN AT DUSK—EVERYTHING IS CANDLELIT—AND BY THE TIME YOU GET DOWN THERE IT’S NICE AND DARK. PEOPLE READ POETRY, SPEAK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES...WE JUST KIND OF COME TOGETHER. YOU CAN FEEL IT IN THE AIR. WHEN WE FINALLY GET UP AND LEAVE, NOT A SINGLE PERSON IS SPEAKING. WE ALL JUST WALK OUT, AND IT’S THIS AWEINSPIRING, BREATHTAKING MOMENT. VERY BEAUTIFUL, VERY MOVING, VERY EMOTIONAL. FOR ME, THAT’S ONE OF THOSE TIMES WHEN SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE REALLY SHOWS ITS TRUE CHARACTER.” Daniel Abar ’07, Recreation Management See more of Dan’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

FLEX THE MUSCLE BETWEEN YOUR EARS. At Springfield College, you’ll stretch and strengthen your mind beyond what you can imagine. You’ll learn how to analyze and solve problems, how to find things out on your own, how to research, access—and sort through—the trillions of bits of information buzzing around the universe. You’ll absorb. Communicate. Challenge. Debate. Create. We put you through these mental gymnastics for a reason: your brain needs exercise just like the rest of you. And a well-trained mind will take you places.

THINKING IS GOOD. DOING IS BETTER. Learning only begins in the classroom. It’s not until you get out into the world and actually start doing and experiencing things that you finally put it all together. We talk a lot about Humanics, the age-old Greek ideal of the balanced individual. We believe, as did the ancient Greeks, that a person’s emotional, intellectual, and physical lives are interconnected. So, just as it’s important to have a positive attitude and study hard, it’s equally important to get out there and practice where it really matters.

From day one at Springfield College, you’ll test classroom theories in real-life situations, think on your feet, explore the world beyond the campus, and begin to make the kinds of differences you can see—and feel—for yourself. It’s pretty simple: you learn by doing. The more you do, the more you learn.

“WE GOT A CHANCE, RIGHT FROM THE START, TO WORK WITH CHILDREN. YOU GET AN IDEA—RIGHT AWAY—IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WANT TO DO.” Julianne Perreira ’07, Elementary Education See more of Julianne’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

TEACHERS WHO TALK THE TALK, WALK THE WALK—AND REMEMBER YOUR NAME. Helping students attain their full potential is how our faculty serves humanity. They approach their jobs the same way they’d want you to approach your own: with enthusiasm, energy, dedication, and a burning desire to make a difference. The student-to-faculty ratio at Springfield College is 14 to 1. This means your class sizes will be small and you won’t be lost in the crowd. It means your teachers will not only get to know you, they’ll get to know what matters to you. It means they’ll be available if you need extra help, or some good advice.

They’re really smart, too. 80% of our faculty members have earned the highest degrees attainable in their areas of expertise. 64% hold doctorates (the national average among university professors is only 54.2%). And most have years of professional experience working in their fields. What can we say? They rock.

The School of Arts, Sciences & Professional Studies offers a broad and engaging curriculum, including computer science, communications and sports journalism, psychology, management and economics, criminal justice, education, and the visual and performing arts.

The School of Health Sciences & Rehabilitation Studies provides an academic and clinical foundation for careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, communication disorders, rehabilitation studies and disability, emergency medical services management, and as physician assistants.

OUR MINORS ARE PRETTY MAJOR, TOO. The schools that are part of Springfield College are unequaled in their areas of concentration. In close conjunction with alumni and professional networks, they regularly place graduates at the highest levels in their chosen professions. Our unique YMCA Career Candidate Program is designed specifically to prepare you for a successful and rewarding career as a YMCA professional. No matter which of more than 50 programs or what field of study you decide to pursue, our system of General Education Requirements ensures that as you specialize you’ll also receive a well-rounded background in history, literature, writing, sciences, the arts, and health and wellness.

The School of Health, Physical Education & Recreation focuses on the study of physical and health education, including applied exercise science, physical education, outdoor leadership, recreation management, sport management, and athletic training.

“MY PARENTS LOVE THE SCHOOL. EVERY TIME THEY COME DOWN HERE THEY’RE AMAZED BY THE WORK I’M DOING, THE WORK MY CLASSMATES ARE DOING. EVERY YEAR IT JUST GETS BETTER.” Nathan Levesque ’08, Computer Graphics See more of Nathan’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

YOU CAN LEARN A LOT IN OUR BACKYARD. Here’s where the whole spirit, mind, body thing really hits home. It’s often said that Springfield College graduates are found in the heart of every community. The same goes for our students. As a leading institution in our own community, we’re privileged to serve our neighbors throughout the city of Springfield. In fact, Evan Dobelle of the New England Board of Higher Education recently recognized us as a “Savior of Our Cities” for the leadership role we play.

The city of Springfield is like an extended laboratory where students can gain experience doing the kinds of things they might do for a living after college. A wide range of community-based programs are integrated with the academic curriculum. Through internships, volunteer service, and co-curricular initiatives, you’ll have the opportunity to interact directly with real people and find out, firsthand, what it’s actually like to work in a specific field. We call it Service Learning—you help people out, feel great about it, and get priceless experience in return. How cool is that?

START MAKING A DIFFERENCE—RIGHT NOW. Volunteer in a city classroom. Learn lifesaving skills. Practice therapeutic techniques. Be a mentor. Run a summer rec program. See the challenges, hard work, and rewards that are part of rehabilitation therapy. Take part in programs that address important neighborhood issues, like an AmeriCorps program that helps local families and serves as a national model, and Humanics in Action Day—a Springfield College tradition of putting our hearts and hands together to help our neighbors. We can connect you with amazing organizations: Alternative Spring Break, international volunteer opportunities, national service programs like Habitat for Humanity or Teach For America, and nonprofit internships in public service organizations around the country. On-the-ground experiences like these can be intense. They’re not for everyone. On the other hand, the insight, knowledge, and leadership skills they provide simply cannot be achieved any other way. We make them available, because we know you’re up to it.

“ONE PATIENT I SAW WAS A KID JUST A COUPLE OF YEARS OLDER THAN ME. HE WAS GOING THROUGH REHAB FOR DRUG ADDICTION AND HE HAD LEFT REHAB BECAUSE HE DIDN’T THINK IT WAS WORKING FOR HIM THAT DAY. SO HE CALLED IN FEELING SICK AND WANTING TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. ON THE RIDE IN—ME TALKING TO HIM, HIM TALKING TO ME—THE CONVERSATION WE HAD PRETTY MUCH CONVINCED HIM THAT HE NEEDED TO GO BACK INTO REHAB AND GET HIS LIFE TOGETHER. AT THE END HE SAID, ‘THANK YOU, YOUR TIME TALKING TO ME HAS BEEN GREAT, I’M GONNA GO BACK NOW.’ I WAS THINKING ABOUT THAT FOR DAYS, MONTHS. I STILL THINK ABOUT IT.” Joshua Greenman ’07, Emergency Medical Services Management See more of Josh’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

YOUR FAMILY SUDDENLY GETS A LOT BIGGER (AND A LOT MORE FUN). The most common first impression that incoming students have of Springfield College is that it’s really, really friendly. They say everybody here says “hello,” even if they’ve never met you. It sounds like an urban legend, only it’s true. You’ll see for yourself.

Springfield College is a place to live, to work, to play, to study, to chill, to discover your true self. It’s kind of like having a 150-acre back yard and a couple thousand other super-energetic kids to do stuff with. Boredom is not an issue. Join a club or organization, and get to know others who are interested in the same things you are. Check out a new academic, charitable, cultural, or social interest. Play rugby. Put a band together. Make art, or perform in theatre, musical, or dance programs. Organize a student event, deejay a radio program, work on the school paper—you name it, and it’s probably here. At Springfield College, you get involved. Explore. And enjoy.

“THERE WAS A WEEK-LONG ORIENTATION MY FRESHMAN YEAR, SO I GOT TO KNOW ABOUT 70 KIDS BEFORE SCHOOL EVEN STARTED. THAT HELPED ME BE A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE WHEN THE YEAR BEGAN. I DIDN’T FEEL LIKE A STRANGER. I FELT LIKE I WAS ALREADY A PART OF THE CAMPUS.” Paul McCloskey ’08, Physical Therapy See more of Paul’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

WE’RE ALL THE SAME ON THE INSIDE. Students come to Springfield College from all over the U.S. and all over the world. A warm, welcoming community and a friendly campus make it easy to feel at home here. Diversity makes us a stronger, better institution. It makes discussions more stimulating, seeing others’ points of view easier, and life more interesting. We celebrate our differences with pride, and look for the common ground that unites us all. The way we see it, the more we get to know and understand the world around us, the more we can do to make it better.

Building on an historic relationship, we partner today with the Y USA to provide training and collaborate in exchange programs. Our International Center offers program information and advice to international students and Springfield College students studying in Australia, England, Ireland, and Spain. Our Multicultural Affairs Center coordinates support services for students from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on historically underrepresented groups. And our International Student Organization hosts numerous social and cultural events and activities.

You can make sports as big a part of your life here as you like. More than 80% of Springfield College students play sports at some level. Our competitive Division III athletic program includes 26 varsity sports for men and women. A wide variety of intramural and club sports are offered as well.

Extensive indoor and outdoor facilities anchor the campus and provide excellent settings for conditioning, practice, and competition. We’re consistently ranked in the top 10% of Division III.

SOME OF OUR BEST CLASSROOMS—AREN’T. To Dr. James Naismith, who invented basketball at Springfield College in 1891, sports weren’t about winning and losing, but about building strength of character—and that’s still the way we feel today. In addition to the obvious health benefits, regular exercise has a positive effect on almost every area of life. It promotes emotional and social development, builds confidence and self-discipline, and enhances overall well-being. Maintaining a high level of fitness gives you the kind of stamina and energy that’s good for the soul.

We were chosen to host the 2006 and 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Final Four. And our alumni include Olympic athletes, professional coaches and trainers, collegiate athletic directors, sports journalists, and executives.

To us, athletics are a key component of a truly balanced education. All of our coaches are faculty members. Their classroom instruction is formed by the intensity and immediacy of the athletic experience, and their coaching is likewise formed by the thought and reflection of the classroom. Whether you’re an athlete or not, we hope to inspire you to lead an energetic life and channel some of your drive and ambition into taking good care of yourself. After all, if you don’t know how to take care of yourself, how can you take care of others?

“IT’S ALL, IN THE END, GOING TO LEAD TO A CAREER WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO BE HELPING PEOPLE OUT. THAT’S WHAT THE MISSION IS HERE. THAT’S WHAT EVERYONE IS STRIVING FOR.” Daniel Rossi ’08, Communications/Sports Journalism See more of Dan’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

“YOU GET A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY IF YOU SHOW INTEREST AND YOU’RE ACTIVE ...YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOU’RE A JUNIOR OR A SENIOR TO DO SOMETHING LIKE WE DO WITH THE BROADCASTING.” Nicholas Carboni ’08, Communications/Sports Journalism See more of Nick’s interview online at www.springfieldcollege.edu/StudentInterviews

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Springfield is a city of 150,000 people located on the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts that offers a wide range of recreational, cultural, and entertainment opportunities. Just a short drive from campus are the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the new MassMutual Center, and Six Flags New England, as well as plenty of world-class restaurants, museums, parks, clubs, and other points of interest. Bradley International Airport is right down the road, and Hartford, Connecticut, is only a half-hour away.

The surrounding region is really exciting, too, with a surprisingly eclectic mix of sights, sounds, culture, and people. You can travel to the mountains, the shoreline, and two of the world’s great cities (NYC & Boston) in a matter of hours. And with tens of thousands of other college students around (who come to this part of New England to study at the 26 other colleges in the area), there’s always something very cool going on somewhere very close. Some people call it The Crossroads of New England. Some call it The Knowledge Corridor. Some call it The Pioneer Valley. Hopefully you’ll be calling it home for the next four years (and maybe more).

BE YOURSELF. AND BE MORE THAN YOURSELF. In over 60 countries worldwide, more than 37,000 Springfield College alumni are providing leadership and making a difference in the lives of others. As teachers and counselors. As coaches and therapists. In Fortune 500 companies and in nonprofit organizations. They all share one thing in common: they got their start at Springfield College. We’re proud of our historic achievements, too. In addition to basketball, volleyball was invented by one of our alumni in nearby Holyoke. Springfield College faculty and graduates founded or helped found the Campfire Girls of America, the National Parks and Recreation Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine. They were instrumental in developing the Dewey Decimal System, and contributed to the Olympic movement in Eastern Europe. They’ve served on the United States Olympic Committee, coached professional sports, and have even brought home Olympic gold.

Simply put, a Springfield College degree will take you as far as you want to go in the world. When you leave here, you’ll take with you a wealth of knowledge and confidence earned by practical experience. With support from our Career Center, you can enter the world of work right away—or go on to graduate study. Many students continue their education here in one of our 13 master’s programs. Half of our alumni pursue graduate degrees within five years of graduation. Visit us. You’ll have the opportunity to meet students and faculty, tour the campus, and get a feel for what Springfield College life is like. Call 800-343-1257 to arrange a campus visit or for information about open houses. One person’s actions can have profound effects. If you’re ready to make a difference in the world, the time is now. The place is here. At Springfield College.
