MISSOURI USA WRESTLING BRINGS THREE EVENTS TO SPRINGFIELD FOR MULTIPLE YEARS A collaboration between the Springfield Sports Commission, Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds has yielded a significant achievement - the successful acquisition of a three-year commitment to host a trio of Missouri USA Wrestling Events in Springfield. This exciting partnership includes the prestigious Missouri USA State Wrestling Championships.

USA BMX BRINGS NATIONAL INDOOR EVENT OT SPRINGFIELD Thousands of athletes, coaches, and spectators will be in Springfield for a USA BMX National Championship Series event in 2024. The USA BMX Show Me State Nationals that will take place March 1-3 in the new Wilson Logistics Arena at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds. Over 4,600 people from all over the country are expected to attend, including 1,100 athletes. The championship will have an estimated economic impact of $1.27 million on the local economy. “The USA BMX National Series is always looking for new cities and venues to partner with and the Wilson Logistics Arena is such a perfect venue for an event of this magnitude,” said Justin Travis, USA BMX director of business development. “We are excited to bring the racers and fans in March!” “Construction of the 100,000-square-foot, $25 million arena played a major role in getting the national event booked in the city,” Kettering said. “Without Wilson Logistics Arena and the support of the team at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, this opportunity would not be possible. We look forward to the arena becoming a nationals location for USA BMX.” Another important factor that made the nationals possible is hosting other BMX events in the past, which set the stage for the bigger competitions, Kettering said. “We are grateful to the staff at the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Spokes BMX,” Kettering said. “They helped forge an exceptional relationship with USA BMX by hosting two Gold Cups and one Mid America Nationals outdoor event. Those opportunities helped put Springfield on the map for BMX and this national event.” Mark Hecquet, President / CEO of the CVB, said seeing the results of our community collaboration and welcoming a national event is exciting for Springfield. “We look forward to welcoming the USA BMX Show Me State Nationals to Springfield in 2024,” Hecquet said. ”USA BMX will bring thousands of people to Springfield, and the economic impact is tremendous. It helps support the city’s restaurants, hotels, retail establishments, and attractions.” Aaron Owen, CEO of the fairgrounds, said hosting sizeable events like the BMX nationals is precisely why the fairgrounds built the arena, and he looks forward to seeing what the future brings. “The Ozark Empire Fairgrounds is excited to welcome USA BMX in 2024 and beyond at Wilson Logistics Arena,” Owen said.

FACILITY SPOTLIGHT COOPER TENNIS & KILLIAN SOFTBALL Two of Springfield’s staple Missouri State High School Activities Association events in Springfield are softball and tennis. With stateof-the-art facilities like Killian Softball Complex and Cooper Tennis Complex, it’s no wonder why Springfield is the preferred host for these prestigious State Championships. Both Cooper Tennis Complex and Killian Softball Complex have made significant contributions to the local sports community, providing opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and fostering a love for tennis and softball among young players. The Missouri State High School Championships hosted at these facilities have become annual highlights, drawing participants and spectators from across the state, further solidifying their reputation as premier sports venues in Missouri. MSHSAA isn’t the only event hosted at the facilities, though! In 2023 Cooper Tennis Complex hosted the USA Pickleball Middle States Diamond Regional Championships. The event ran in early June and hosted over 430 athletes, the majority of which came from outside the region. Killian Sports Complex hosted the Special Olympics Missouri South Softball Regional hosting around 20 teams in August 2023. Additionally, these facilities play a crucial role in supporting local leagues, offering lessons, and organizing events that contribute significantly to the thriving sports community in Springfield. Thanks to the dedication of the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, softball and tennis continue to flourish in the area. The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, in partnership with Lake Country Soccer, are making $25 million investments in sports facility renovations at Cooper Park, including artificial turf upgrades on 19 sports fields. This includes the turfing of 11 diamond fields and 8 soccer fields.

with

Dean and Audrey Kroencke Q: How did you first get involved with volunteering for the Springfield Sports Commission’s Team Ambassador program? Q: What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer? A: The orientation process to have a successful experience was crucial for us. The information provided at orientation helped guide us through the expectations for our role as a team ambassador.

Q: Could you share a memorable experience or story from your time as a volunteer? A: In our first experience as a Team Ambassador, the coach of the basketball team was from Dean’s hometown. This was quite a coincidence and we enjoyed visiting about this. Q: What personal skills or qualities do you believe make you an effective volunteer? A: Enjoy meeting people and promoting the city of Springfield. Q: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the Sports Commission?
