SPORTS COMMISSION SECURES FOUR-YEAR COMMITMENT WITH USA BMX
Following a successful event in Springfield from March 1-3, 2024, the Springfield Sports Commission, in col laboration with the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds team, secured a major long-term commitment from USA BMX. In August, the Sports Commission signed a four-year agreement with USA BMX to host the Show Me State Nationals in Springfield, continuing to hold the event at Wilson Logistics Arena.
Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Spring field Sports Commission, expressed his excitement about the agreement: “We’ve been working to ward this for a long time. Our relationship with USA BMX began in 2015 at Spokes BMX, where we teamed up with the local BMX Club volunteers and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board to host the USA BMX Gold Cup series. From there, we kept the momentum going with a National event in 2017 and another Gold Cup Series in 2021. Securing the Indoor National event was always our goal, but we knew we needed the right facility to make it happen. Thanks to the construction of Wilson Logistics Arena and our strong partnership with the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, we were finally able to bring this vision to life for Springfield.”
The 2024 event saw 1,001 riders from 41 states and four countries, and also featured the USA Cycling Collegiate BMX National Championship. The event made a significant economic impact on Springfield, generating an estimated $1.1 million in spending and filling approximately 2,800 hotel room nights.

SPRINGFIELD HOSTS MISSOURI WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS, BOOSTING LOCAL ECONOMY
The Springfield Sports Commission, in collaboration with Wilson Logistics Arena, successfully hosted four Missouri Wrestling Championships in 2024. After a competitive bidding process, Springfield was selected in the summer of 2023 to host the prestigious events.
These championships brought more than 3,500 boys and girls wrestlers from across Missouri to the city over four weekends. The influx of athletes and spectators generated over $2 million in direct economic spending in the greater Springfield area.
Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission, Lance Kettering, highlighted the significance of the newly constructed Wilson Logistics Arena: “These events would not have considered Springfield as a location without the construction of this facility. We are thrilled to be the home for these championship events, and it truly showcases the positive impact the arena has on our community.”

The three-day competition will bring together some of the Midwest’s top track and field athletes, with an estimated 2,000 participants. Early projections suggest the event will generate more than 2,200 hotel room nights and estimated direct economic spending of 2.1 million for the Springfield area.

The Springfield Sports Commission and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board have teamed up to bring the MSHSAA State Softball Championships to Springfield from 2026 to 2031. This five-year deal is a big win for the city, reinforcing Springfield’s role as a top spot for major sports events and showing the community’s commitment to supporting youth athletics.
The championships are expected to have a strong economic impact, with an estimated $374,000 spent locally each year and a total of $1.87 million over the five years. On top of that, more than 400 hotel room nights will be booked annually, bringing over 2,000 room nights in total during the contract period. Board Spotlight
with Kyle McClure
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Q: Are you originally from Springfield? If not, what brought you here?
A: I’m not originally from Springfield—I’m actually from Warrensburg, MO. However, I came to Springfield to attend Drury University, where I had the opportunity to swim competitively throughout my college years. The sense of community here in Springfield and the experiences I had as a student really cemented my connection to this city, and I chose to stay after graduation.
Q: What do you do for work, and what does that role entail?
A: I serve as the Director of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy for City Utilities of Springfield. In this role, I’m responsible for navigating the complex relationship between the utility and local, state, and federal government agencies. This means advocating for policies that benefit our community while ensuring that the utility remains compliant with regulatory requirements.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A:The variety, no two days are alike! Every day brings something new, and after 25 years in this role, that’s saying something. It keeps me energized and engaged, knowing that what I do makes a meaningful impact on the city.
Q: Why did you decide to join the Springfield Sports Commission?
A:Sports have always been a big part of my life, so joining the Sports Commission felt like a natural fit. I was particularly drawn to the idea of supporting Springfield’s sports tournaments and events. I’ve come to appreciate how much these events contribute to the local economy. The economic impact of sports tourism— hotels, restaurants, and local businesses benefiting from visitors—is significant, and I wanted to be a part of growing that for our community.
Q: What would you consider your most significant professional accomplishment(s) so far?
A: One of my proudest achievements has been securing $100 million in earmark grants for City Utilities. This was no small feat—it required a lot of behind-thescenes work, from building coalitions to lobbying key decision-makers. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that this funding will help improve Springfield’s infrastructure and ensure reliable utilities for years to come.
Q: When you’re not working, how do you enjoy your free time?
A: My wife and I enjoy golfing together; it’s something we try to do regularly. We also love to travel and visit our son.
Q: What are your favorite sports now compared to when you were growing up?
A:Honestly, not much has changed regarding the sports I enjoy. I enjoy watching golf and swimming. - I don’t root for anyone specific. When it comes to team sports, though, I’m a fan of my Kansas City teams—the Royals and the Chiefs. And I know this might be a bit controversial around here, but I’ve always supported the University of Kansas Jayhawks when it comes to college athletics.
