It offers a full bar and, along with pickleball, various other yard games. Looking to play pickleball outdoors? Any of the Springfield-Greene County Park Board outdoor parks is a great option.

GOLF

If you’re seeking a more traditional game, look no further than the public golf courses of Springfield: Bill & Payne Stewart Golf Course, Horton Smith Golf Course and Rivercut. BigShots Golf is a great way for friends and family to compete against each other while also enjoying good food and beverages. There are also several mini golf courses throughout town, perfect for a fun family night out.

DISC GOLF

Want to get in on the disc golf fun? Lake Springfield has their own course, which is complete with 18 holes. McBride Park and Oak Grove Park have their own unique disc golf as well. Miller Farm Park in Willard and the Lucky 10 Disc Golf Course in Republic are two popular spots just out of town.

TENNIS

Cooper Tennis Complex offers plenty of courts where you can practice and play competitive matches. Their facilities also include a shop to get new gear and a fitness area. With lots of indoor courts too, Cooper Tennis Complex is a great option to get some exercise playing tennis even during the wintertime. If you seek a more low-key atmosphere, Phelps Grove Park features its very own Perry Tennis Courts.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Ozark Beach Volleyball offers players the chance to play on 10 beach courts, complete with food, drinks and a good time. A no-pressure environment is the name of the game here, and you can either reserve a court by the hour or drop in during openplay times!

Everyone knows Springfield is famous for Bass Pro, Wonders of Wildlife, Fantastic Caverns and Route 66. While every one of those things is well worth a spot on your itinerary, as a travel and outdoor writer who recently moved here from out west, I can tell you firsthand that there’s so, so much more to explore. Over the past year-ish, I’ve put a ton of time and energy into doing exactly that. The result? I’ve discovered a lot of local experiences and hidden gems that showcase what makes Springfield the rightful Queen City of the Ozarks—things even seasoned travelers often overlook. Here, I’m sharing some of my personal favorites.

VISIT FINLEY FARMS

Most people head to the Ozark Mill for dinner or drinks with some of the best views in the area. However, Finley Farms itself is a destination in its own right. Between events

like Kayaks & Cocktails (which is exactly what it sounds like—kayak upriver, then stop for cocktails along the water), riverside live music, a bustling summer farmers market and seasonal workshops—where the topics could be anything from how to make your own dried floral wreath to baking gluten-free desserts—there’s always something new here.

To clarify, you should absolutely still make reservations for brunch or dinner. Just be sure to check a few of these other things off your list while you’re there. Oh, and head downstairs to The Garrison for cocktails in a speakeasy-esque lounge.

GET COMPETITIVE AT 1984 ARCADE

No matter how old you are, a serious affection for old-school arcade games seems to be universal. This retro spot downtown is a dream for gaming purists, with classics like Pac-Man,

Space Invaders and Frogger, plus, of course, tons of pinball machines. The best part?

Admission gets you unlimited plays, with the exception of pinball, which are pay-to-play.

SUPPORT LOCAL AT FARMERS MARKET OF THE OZARKS

This year-round Saturday morning market is impressive, and I came from a city where they’re practically a way of life. Tucked away in the unassuming Farmers Park Pavilion on the southern end of town, you’ll find everything from local produce and specialty gourmet foods to artisan jewelry and food trucks at this community hub.

CHEER ON THE SPRINGFIELD CARDINALS

Our family adores the wholesome-yet-electric atmosphere at Hammons Field. Especially on warm summer evenings, when you can

enjoy $2 brats and Friday night fireworks. On Thursdays throughout the summer, the team plays as its alter ego, the Springfield Cashew Chickens—a nod to the city’s iconic dish.

LEVEL UP YOUR COOKING AT PICKWICK & CHERRY

Pickwick & Cherry is amazing for foodies who want to sharpen their skills in the kitchen. Classes cater to all skill levels and just about every interest, from perfecting pie crust to elaborate, multi-course holiday dinners. They even offer Young Bakers’ Camps for those visiting over school holidays.

EXPERIENCE

THE MAGIC OF A MIDWEST

PIZZA CLUB

Millsap Farms’ Pizza Club made me fall headover-heels in love with the Midwest. Held on Thursday nights in the summer and fall, the “club” is a super casual gathering where locals

come in droves for wood-fired pizzas topped with unexpected, fresh-from-the-farm ingredients. The offerings are different every week, though there’s always a plain cheese option. A couple of our favorites have been Bacon ’n’ Blue and a fall pizza with brown butter sage cream sauce and potatoes. Bring a blanket (and your appetite).

TAKE A HIKE WITHOUT LEAVING THE CITY

One of my favorite things about Springfield (and really, the Ozarks in general) is the easy access to nature. The Springfield Conservation Nature Center is a prime example. This beautiful, wooded escape is within city limits. A network of six trails, about three miles total, winds alongside the lake and through forests and fields. Plus, the center hosts a variety of nature-focused educational programs for all ages, many of them free.

EAT & DRINK YOUR WAY THROUGH TOWN

The thing that probably surprised me most about Springfield—and still surprises me to this day, actually—is its incredible foodie scene. My husband and I have running lists on our phones of places to try, and it seems like every time we check a couple off, new places open! I cannot possibly pick even a few favorites, so here are a bunch of quick recommendations for specific situations.

Best BBQ: City Butcher and Barbecue

Best coffee shop for working or studying…and cute dogs: Black Lab Coffee Co. Galloway. *Insider tip: Pair this with a walk at the peaceful Sequiota Park, right across the street.

Best breakfast spot: Druff’s

Most unexpected in a Midwest city: El Cafecito (Latin American) and Café Cusco (Peruvian)

Best date night restaurant: Tied between Flame Steakhouse & Wine Bar and Char Steakhouse and Oyster Bar, which happen to be sister restaurants

Best special occasion restaurant: Harvest Best pastries: Blue Heron Farm & Bakery

Best burger: Casper’s Diner

Best tacos: I Love Tacos

Best bar for a night out with friends: Golden Girl Rum Club

(Bonus) Unique date ideas: Firehouse Pottery, a Pickwick & Cherry class or after-hours events at Wonders of Wildlife

GO BACK In Time

The story of Springfield’s history is one worth discovering. Explore these historical sites during your trip!

Springfield, Missouri, has rich history and intriguing tales that make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. If you’re exploring the remnants of Civil War battles or walking through the streets that once witnessed the birth of the iconic Route 66, Springfield promises a fascinating glimpse into the past.

THINGS EVERY VISITOR SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SGF’S HISTORY

The first settlers arrived in Springfield in 1829, and it has always been a rural agricultural area. The arrival of the railroad in 1870 transformed it into a significant commercial center.

Interestingly, Springfield was two separate cities for 17 years, divided into North Springfield and South Springfield, which explains why the city has a street called Division Street. North Springfield developed around the railroad depot on Commercial Street. By 1887, the two cities merged, leading to a unified Springfield.

This merger influenced the city’s layout. City Hall, the courthouse, the old city hall and the only high school at that time were all built along Central Street, halfway between the two business districts, making it a central hub of activity and governance.

FUN FACTS

Springfield is celebrated as the birthplace of Route 66. In 1926, after a meeting at the Colonial Hotel, a telegram was sent from Springfield to officials in Tulsa and Missouri, suggesting the number “66” for the new highway. The city’s role as a crossroads has deep roots in Native American history, when Springfield was a significant meeting point for several indigenous tribes. Five different trails converged here, and they were drawn by the area’s abundant potable water, which was vital for their travel and trade. Did you know that Springfield is perhaps

the only city in the United States to have experienced a cobra outbreak? In 1953, a pet shop dealing with illegal animals accidentally released a dozen cobra snakes. The city spent 60 days hunting them down, and even LIFE magazine featured it.

Springfield is not just a city; it is a storybook filled with fascinating chapters waiting

to be explored. Whether you’re intrigued by quirky historical events, the evolution of American transportation or the steadfast preservation of historic districts, the City of the Ozarks offers a rich and engaging journey through time. So, pack your bags, put on your history hat and get ready to step back in time.

STEP INTO THE CAVE STATE

Did you know that Missouri is known as the “Cave State”? We have more than 7,500 recorded caves—and there could be more out there. The Springfield area is home to some of the most beautiful caves just waiting for you to explore.

⊳ FANTASTIC CAVERNS

Springfield, fantasticcaverns.com

Juno the dog scampered after another animal—John Knox never found it (neither did Juno), but the pair discovered a massive cave in 1862. Then, in 1867, a group of 12 from the Springfield Women’s Athletic Club ventured into the cave. Now you can explore it from Jeep-drawn trams led by tour guides. The path follows an old riverbed for nearly an hour-long experience. Marvel at the giant columns all around. Look for stalactites—the small tubular ones are called soda straws— and gaze at sparkling minerals. Keep an eye out for bats, too!

Fun fact: You can find a statue of Juno in the parking lot!

SMALLIN CIVIL WAR CAVE Ozark, smallincave.com

Deep in the Ozarks lies a legendary cave where people previously sought shelter and secrecy. The infamous outlaw Wild Bill Hickok hid here during the Civil War, and so did soldiers. You can take an hour-long tour of this little gem, where you’ll enjoy waterfalls cascading into a clear pool—and keep an eye out for salamanders and crawdads. Then, be sure to check out the arrowheads in the gift shop. Feeling extra adventurous? Book a guided Off-Trail Wild Tour where you’ll walk through two-foot-deep water—headlamps and helmets are provided.

Fun fact: The Osage people lived here for thousands of years.

CRYSTAL CAVE

Springfield, visitcrystalcave.com

You’ll encounter the gates of the old Springfield jail before you descend into Crystal Cave. Your hour-long tour includes stops at the Ghost Room, named for its two-foot-tall bright white stalagmites. Check out the vintage arcade games or play a quick round of mini golf. Try your luck mining for gemstones and fossils, too. Feel like crawling through a creek bed below ground? Sign up for a two-hour Wild Cave Tour.

Fun fact: A formation nicknamed “Washington Monument” was replicated by Smithsonian researchers for the National Museum of Natural History.

TALKING ROCKS CAVERN Branson, talkingrockscavern.com

Talking Rocks is fun for everyone! Hop on a tour—your guide will help you explore this mind-blowing space, which is about 100 feet tall. Tours last just under an hour. Back above ground, dig into the sluicing troughs and hunt for gemstones, play a round of mini golf or take a hike on one of four nature trails. If you still want the feel of a cave without getting in too deep, crawl through the SpeleoBoxes that simulate caving. Be sure to check out the gift shop and take a crack at a geode.

Fun fact: The first explorer, Truman Powell, initially called it “Fairy Cavern.”
