SPRINGFIELD SPORTS COMMISSION ON THE ROAD

The Springfield Sports Commission has an exciting lineup of travel and trade show appearances planned for FY25, creating valuable opportunities to connect with industry leaders and attract top-tier events to Springfield.

The fiscal year kicked off in August with Stan Adams representing Springfield at Connect Marketplace in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known as the industry’s longest-running reverse trade show, it features the most appointments, with Adams meeting over 30 professionals to foster key relationships.

In September, Stan and Ali Finnan traveled to Anaheim, California, for the TEAMS Conference and Expo, where they joined the Show Me Missouri Sports team. Over two days, the group connected with more than 50 industry leaders, strengthening partnerships that support not only Springfield but also Missouri’s sports tourism efforts.

In October, Ali attended S.P.O.R.T.S The Relationship Conference in Wichita, Kansas. This event, which maintains a 3:1 supplier-to-planner ratio, allowed for meaningful relationship-building with sports event rights holders. Ali successfully met with 16 suppliers, reinforcing Springfield’s presence in the industry.

In November, Stan and Ali attended the SportsETA 4S & Rights Holder Summit in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the first time. This event provided insights into the latest trends in strategies, services, sales, and sponsorships (4S)—key factors in the success of sports events and tourism.

The second half of the fiscal year begins with the SportsETA Chief Executive Summit in Fort Worth, Texas, on February 1819. Lance Kettering will attend this event that brings together CEOs and industry experts to discuss leadership, crisis management, and organizational success, equipping sports tourism executives with essential tools to advance their missions.

In March, Lance Kettering and Stan Adams will attend the Missouri Sports Travel Exchange at Lake of the Ozarks from the 3rd-5th. This twoday reverse trade show connects sports event organizers with Missouri destinations and venues through business exchanges, networking, and educational sessions. Springfield was proud to host this event in 2024 at University Plaza.

From April 14-17, the entire Sports Commission team will participate in the SportsETA Symposium in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the industry’s largest annual gathering. This event brings together sports destinations and event organizers to build partnerships and explore trends shaping the future of sports tourism.

Wrapping up the fiscal year, Springfield will host the first-ever “Great 8” Fam Tour, organized by the Huddle Up Group. This event will welcome eight like-minded Sports Commissions and destinations and over 20 rights holders, creating a valuable 3:1 ratio for fostering new event opportunities.

Through these events, the Springfield Sports Commission continues to showcase the city as a premier sports destination, driving economic impact and strengthening its position in the sports tourism industry.

The AGFinancial Arena, the latest addition to the Evangel University campus, made its grand debut in September 2024. Spanning an impressive 70,000 square feet, this state-of-the-art facility is poised to become a hub for collegiate athletics and community events in Springfield.

The arena itself encompasses 40,000 square feet, featuring a collegiate regulation basketball and volleyball court designed to meet the demands of competitive play. In addition to the main court, the facility boasts two full cross courts, providing ample space for practices, tournaments, and various athletic events.

For those seeking an elevated experience, the arena includes four VIP lounge and box suites situated above the lower bowl, which has a seating capacity of 1,600. The concourse area enhances the visitor experience with concessions, a box office, and gathering spaces, all equipped with LED screens and a cutting-edge production room to support live events.

Athletes will benefit from modern amenities, including dedicated locker rooms for basketball and volleyball teams, as well as four visitor locker rooms and officials’ facilities. An athletic training hub conveniently located near the main court ensures that players have access to essential medical support.

Adjacent to the arena, the Randy Rowden Training Facility occupies 30,000 square feet on the south side of the Valor Center. This facility is designed to support Evangel’s football and soccer programs, featuring VIP box seating that overlooks the north end zone of Coryell Field. In addition to athletic director offices and operational spaces, the training facility includes a state-of-the-art strength training room, an athletic medicine hub, and a versatile 2,500-square-foot multipurpose room ideal for campus events and meetings.

The south entrance plaza of AGFinancial Arena will serve as a vibrant venue for student gatherings before and after games, complemented by additional parking to accommodate attendees. With its modern design and comprehensive facilities, AGFinancial Arena is set to elevate the sports experience at Evangel University and become a cornerstone of the Springfield sports community.

NATIONAL CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Springfield is proud to host the National Christian HomeSchool Basketball Championships, a premier national event that will bring approximately 415 teams from across the country to the Greater Springfield area from March 10-15, 2025. Recognized as the largest homeschool basketball tournaments in the nation, this annual championship showcases incredible talent and fosters community among athletes, families, and fans nationwide.

The event will take place across more over 20 gym floors throughout the Greater Springfield area, including top facilities such as Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town, The Field House, Strafford Sports Center, Mission University, Drury University, Evangel University, Springfield Public Schools facilities, Springfield-Greene County Park Board facilities and various regional community centers. This widespread collaboration underscores Springfield’s reputation as a premier destination for sports and events.

This national competition promises a fantastic experience for players and spectators alike. The tournament also brings significant benefits to the Springfield community, generating an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 room nights at area hotels and short-term rentals. Local businesses, attractions, and restaurants are expected to welcome 8,000 to 10,000 guests, creating an estimated direct economic impact of more than $5.2 million.

Springfield, Missouri, is about to step onto the national rugby stage in a big way. From May 2 to May 4, 2025, Springfield will host the USA Club Rugby Northern Super Regionals at the Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town. The Springfield Sports Commission, in collaboration with Wilson Logistics Arena, successfully hosted four Missouri Wrestling Championships in 2024. Springfield and the Wilson’s Logistics Arena will also host the events in 2025 and 2026.

The Missouri USA Wrestling Championship series brings in more than 3,500 boys and girls wrestlers from across the state of Missouri to the city over three weekends. The influx of athletes and spectators generated over $2 million in direct economic spending in the greater Springfield area.

Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission, Lance Kettering, praised the contributions of Aaron Owen, Casey Owen, and Olivia Grellner at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, stating: “The success of hosting events like this is a direct result of the hard work and vision of Aaron, Casey, and Olivia. Pat Ream, Missouri USA Wrestling State Chair remarked, “Missouri USA Wrestling exists to provide statewide wrestling opportunities for all our members including athletes, coaches, officials or as volunteers. Our goal is to develop, promote and maintain high levels of wrestlers, coaches, and officials within the state of Missouri.”

SPORTS COMMISSION CUP UNVEILED

The Springfield Sports Commission celebrates the outstanding athletic achievements of entire athletics programs at each school based on their performance in MSHSAA-sanctioned sports. The prestigious Sports Commission Cup, now heading into its second year, has quickly become a highly anticipated award, sparking excitement and competition among schools striving to earn this honor. The winning school proudly displays the Cup at their district for the year before it is passed on to the next recipient.

This past December, the Sports Commission team of Stan Adams and Ali Finnan went to Fair Grove High School to present the inaugural Sports Commission Cup. The Eagles rallied in celebration bringing in all students and student athletes to mark this momentous occasion.

After the presentation, Fair Grove’s Athletic Director, Damon Seiger, shared his excitement about winning the first cup: “It has been an honor to be awarded the Sports Commission Cup. Good luck to every school this coming year because we plan on keeping it!”

Check out the leaderboard after the conclusion of the Fall Sports Season!

The point system for the Sports Commission Cup is based on championships sponsored by MSHSAA and features separate structures for bracket and non-bracket sports.

Bracket Sports: Points are awarded in descending increments, starting with 75 points for the state champion. Final Four teams receive points in 10-point increments, while other brackets descend by five points. Football is unique, with no third-place game and a modified structure.

A SPRINGFIELD TRADITION

THE BASS PRO

TOURNAMENT

The Bass Pro Tournament of Champions has been a staple of the Springfield Community since its first iteration in 1985. The prestigious High School Tournament is best known for being America’s Highest Attended High School Basketball Tournament. This year’s event did not disappoint with an announced attendance of 21,000+ from January 1618, at the Great Southern Bank Arena, which brought in an estimated $516,413 in economic impact.

With this being a marque event in Springfield, it is a no-brainer for the Springfield Sports Commission to be a proud sponsor of the event. “The Sports Commission is proud to serve as the media room sponsor for the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, the nation’s most highly attended high school basketball tournament,” said Lance Kettering, Executive Director. “It’s an honor to support this premier event, which not only brings incredible talent to Springfield but also shines a national spotlight on our city. We deeply appreciate Springfield Public Schools for their dedication to showcasing our community through education-based athletic experiences and for elevating Springfield to the national stage.”

This was not any ordinary Bass Pro Tournament of Champions; this was the 40th year.

Tournament Director, Josh Scott, knew he and his team needed to elevate this year’s event with it being the 40th Anniversary. “We already had your traditional dunk contest, but we thought to ourselves, what if we brought in a Celebrity to be a judge this year? With our amazing partnership with Convoy of Hope we were able to bring in two-time Master’s Champion, Bubba Watson,” said Scott.

OF CHAMPIONS

Other additions included: a shot clock, a new 3-point contest, and for the first time all 12 games were live-streamed through the Nixa LIVE! student production team.

The event always includes two local teams, this year represented by Central and Parkview. The other 6 teams included Milton (GA), Bullis (MD), Millennium (AZ), Oak Ridge (FL), Christ the King (NY), & Link Academy out of Branson, MO. This year’s Championship Game saw Oak Ridge take on Link Academy, with Link Academy taking home the trophy with a 67 - 55 win. This was Link’s 2nd time in the last 3 years to win the prestigious tournament.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT SMC PACKAGING GROUP

There are so many great local companies that are involved with the Bass Pro TOC every year, but probably the most unique is the SMC Packaging Group. Last year the Sports Commission partnered with them to create the official interactive bracket that became a huge success. They not only wanted to partner again but wanted to take their display to the next level. Their incredible creative team outdid themselves once again with their newest addition of an interactive Sports TV Set.

Dylon Wake, with SMC Packaging group commented, “It has been a tremendous opportunity to collaborate with the Springfield Sports Commission. Through this partnership, SMC Packaging Group not only benefits from increased visibility at these events, but we also have the privilege of supporting a local business in attracting more sporting events to the Ozarks.

The projects we develop for these events allow us to demonstrate that the corrugated industry offers far more than just basic packaging solutions. We look forward to fostering our continued partnership moving forward.”

Stan Adams on behalf of the Sports Commission team offered the following, “At the Sports Commission, we greatly appreciate the support of partners like SMC Packaging Group to enhance our sports events. This year’s interactive display was even more impressive than last year’s. We can’t wait to see what Dylon and his team have up their sleeve for next year.”

The Springfield Sports Commission, in collaboration with the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds team, secured a major long-term commitment from USA BMX. Young athletes had the unique opportunity to compete and learn from Maggie Nichols, a former elite gymnast and NCAA champion whose inspiring journey has left a lasting mark on the sport. The event not only provided an unforgettable experience for participants but also delivered a significant boost to the local economy, with an estimated impact of $568,700.

“We’ve brought our gymnastics meet to Springfield for two years and can’t wait for year three! The staff at the Expo Center is amazing to work with, always attentive to our needs to ensure a first-class event,” said Jim Lucas, co-founder of LR Productions.

With world-class gymnastics and an atmosphere of encouragement and empowerment, We Are Strong continues to be a standout

event, inspiring future champions and reinforcing Springfield’s reputation as a premier sports destination.

Ali Finnan, Coordinator of Sports Strategies & Events for the Sports Commission, shared her excitement for the event: “This event is about more than just gymnastics—it’s about empowering the next generation to be strong, confident, and fearless, both on and off the mat. NCAA WEST REGIONAL - USA TRIATHLON

Springfield, Missouri, welcomed elite collegiate triathletes on October 12 as Fellows Lake served as the backdrop for the USA Triathlon West Regional Championship. The event, hosted in collaboration with City Utilites of Springfield, Drury University and the Springfield Sports Commission, featured 16 teams from Division I, II, and III battling for a coveted spot at the NCAA National Championships.

With Heartland Racing directing the competition, athletes swam, biked, and ran their way through a challenging course, vying for a top-three finish to secure their spot at nationals. In Division I, Arizona State University took first place, followed by the University of Arizona and the University of Denver. In Division II, the host school, Drury University, claimed victory, with Colorado Mesa University and Black Hills State University rounding out the top three. North Central College, Central College, and Calvin University emerged as the top finishers in Division III.

Beyond the intense competition, the event made a significant impact on the local economy, generating an estimated $97,868. Springfield’s successful hosting of the championship reinforced its reputation as a premier sports destination, setting the stage for future high-profile events.

ALLISON SPORTS TOWN, SWMO RUSH & SPORTS COMMISSION HOST SUCCESSFUL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKENDS!

The 2025 Springfield Futsal Shootout, held over two weekends in January, has wrapped up with great success, bringing top-tier futsal teams from across the region to compete at Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town. Organized by Lake Country Soccer and SWMO Rush, the event, presented by the Springfield Sports Commission showcased the collaborative efforts that Springfield is known for.

The girls’ tournament, held from January 3-5, featured 55 teams, while the boys’ tournament, held from January 10-12, hosted 115 teams. With nearly 50% of the teams traveling from outside the Springfield area, the event generated a substantial economic impact, estimated at $393,000 for the girls’ weekend and $497,000 for the boys’ weekend.

Chris Martin, General Manager of Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town, expressed his appreciation for the event’s success. “Partnering with the Spring field Sports Commission and SWMO Rush to host the Springfield Futsal Shootout has been an incredi ble experience. We’re grateful to have welcomed so many teams from across the region to Springfield for two exciting weekends of futsal,” said Martin.

Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Springfield Sports Commission, emphasized the value of local collaboration. “Working with both Sports Town and the SWMO Rush and the Lake Country Soccer administrative team on this event has been fantas tic. It’s been a goal of ours to partner for champi onship events, and we’re hopeful that this indoor futsal tournament will pave the way for many more opportunities in the future,” Kettering said.

John Markey, Executive Director of Lake Country Soccer, echoed Kettering’s sentiments. “While hosting the event in Branson has been great, bringing it back to Springfield has been a true highlight. Our partnership with the Sports Commission and Allison Sports Town made this event a tremendous success, and we’re excited for the positive impact it will have on the Springfield community,” Markey added. The Springfield Futsal Shootout has proven to be a major success, not only in terms of competition but also in boosting Springfield’s economy and strengthening local partnerships. The event marked an exciting new chapter for futsal in the region, with hopes for future growth and collaboration.

PBA RETURNS TO SPRINGFIELD WITH BOWLING ICON PETE WEBER

The PBA Tour has officially announced their return to Springfield Feb. 10 -16!

Enterprise Lanes will host the Pete Weber Missouri Classic for the second straight year. In the inaugural professional event, the 76-person field competed over 4 days and saw Anthony Simonsen defeat Bill O’Neill in the Nationally Televised Final on FS1. Pete Weber himself was in attendance every day of the event including the final where he presented the trophy and $25,000 prize money personally to Champion Anthony Simonsen.

The impact of having this event on television was a major factor for why Enterprise Lanes wanted the event to return. “The big thing about it being televised is that it puts Springfield bowling on the map,” Enterprise Park Lanes co-owner Steve Wiemer said. The Springfield Business Journal reported, “Around 300 people watched the Springfield tournament live on location this year. According to 11Frame.com, a digital bowling news site, approximately 368,000 people

tuned in to watch on television, giving it the highest viewership for a PBA event on FS1 since 2021, according to past reporting”.

On the PBA Tour returning to Springfield, Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports Commission said, “We are always on the lookout for ways to put Springfield on the National Sports Map and what better way to do it than to support one of the most iconic athletes of our generation.

Even if you aren’t a bowling fan, I can guarantee you know or have seen clips of the iconic Missourian”. The 2025 event is projected to generate $250,000+ of economic impact.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

with DAN REITER

Q: Are you originally from Springfield? If not, what brought you here?

A: My parents met and fell in love in Springfield, but I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They moved our family back when I was in 8th grade and our family has been here since.

Q: What role does the Springfield Cardinals play in driving tourism and local business in Springfield? How does this align with the Sports Commission’s goals?

A: We try to be an outlet for Fun and Community Spirit. Whether it’s people close to home or far we want to provide a unique and top-notch Fan Experience that brings people back. Like the Sports Commission we want to be the Rising Tide making the Ozarks a sports and recreational hub.

Q: When you are not working during the season vs off-season, does what you do for fun or to relax change?

A: HAHAHA. There is no off-season! I’m a parent so there also isn’t relaxation. We have two boys in sports and I try to coach them and cheer for them year-round.

Q: What’s been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?

A: I’ve been with the Springfield Cardinals since the Inaugural Season in 2005, so I’ve got a wonderful memory bank of rewarding moments. Luckily, every Opening Day brings up those positive emotions and allows me to reconnect with fans.

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self just starting out in this business?

A: Take the time to enjoy the special moments. Learn to strategically know when to fight or be silent. Make decisions to make your life better, not just your job. All three of these are important now but I wish I could have learned sooner.

Q: What are your favorite sports now compared to when you were growing up?

A: Growing up Cardinals Baseball was clear cut number 1. I was almost unaware of other sports. Now my favorite is whatever my kids are playing, closely followed by Cardinals baseball.

SPORTS COMMISSION PARTNERSHIP WITH LAMAR ADVERTISING PAYS BIG DIVIDENDS WITH SPORTS GROUPS

Attracting sports events to Springfield means distinguishing our destination from others, and the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission has found a unique way to do that: a customized billboard program with Lamar Advertising.

“Our partnership with Lamar Advertising allows us to create personalized welcome messages for athletes, fans, and spectators,” said Executive Director Lance Kettering. “Additionally, the billboards help us raise awareness locally of our events and our mission to promote sports tourism in Springfield.”

The partnership has proven invaluable for events like the MSHSAA State Basketball Championships. “Whenever we needed assistance promoting our events, Bryan Jones and his team at Lamar Advertising were always there for us. Their unwavering support of our mission and their genuine assistance in helping us achieve our goals as a local nonprofit organization mean the world to us,” added Kettering.

Lamar Advertising is equally proud to support the commission. “We will continue to back the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission as they create economic growth for our community,” said Lamar Advertising General Manager, Bryan Jones. “Thank you to Lance and the whole team for all you do at the Sports Commission!”

If you’re a local business interested in partnering with the Sports Commission to enhance our events and support our mission, we’d love to hear from you. Contact our team at sports@springfieldmo.org to learn more about how we can collaborate.

SPRINGFIELD TO HOST SPORTS CONFERENCE AND FAM WITH HUDDLE UP GROUP

The Springfield Sports Commission has been selected as the inaugural host of the Great 8 Conference. This brand-new conference will take place May 27-29 and will feature 8 Sports Commissions from similar markets from across the country to Springfield for education and tradeshow meetings with 20 different rights holders.

This unique event is the brainchild of Jon Schmieder and the rest of his amazing team at the Huddle Up Group. During this 3 day event, attendees will get to experience Bass Pro Wonders of Wildlife & Aquarium, The Springfield Cardinals, and a first-hand look at all of the top sports facilities Springfield has to offer.

The Springfield Sports Commission stated, “We are thrilled that Jon and his team have trusted us to kick off this event which we hope will set the tone for future years. We look forward to continuing our long history of successful partnerships with Huddle Up Group and can’t wait to show why Springfield, MO is one of the premier sports destinations in the country”.

NEW FIELD SURFACES AT COOPER PARK TAKING SHAPE

After being announced in November of 2022, the Lake Country Soccer Renovations have been completed! Officially opening in January of 2025, part of the total $25 million project sets Lake Country Soccer as one of the top Soccer Complexes in the Midwest. The improvements include: 8 fields upgraded with synthetic turf, brand new LED Lights, improvements to the existing soccer stadium, new restrooms, new locker rooms, new concessions, new ADA-accessible walkways, additional parking, and additional shade/fan-friendly areas.

John Markey, Executive Director of Lake Country Soccer, on the impact of these new renovations, “In order to compete with other communities and bring the economic dollars into Springfield, it just became a need.” Markey on the specific need for turf fields, “In previous years, Lake Country had to cancel large soccer tournaments due to rain, which creates muddy, rutted and unsafe fields for the players. Then teams don’t want to take a chance of being canceled, so they end up going to other tournaments being held on turf fields like Kansas City, St. Louis or Boonville.”

Stan Adams, Director of Sports Business Development for the Springfield Sports Commission, adds “The importance of this project will be felt by the entire Springfield community for decades. Not only will this allow us to bring in even bigger soccer tournaments but other sports such as football, lacrosse, and many other field sports”.

PHASE 1 OFFICIALLY COMPLETED IN FALL OF 2024!
