NATIONAL CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO SPRINGFIELD!

The 2024 National Christian HomeSchool Basketball Championships return to Springfield, March 11-15. The event has been held in Springfield since 2009. Basketball competition will fill the city with almost 400 teams expected to converge in Springfield for the event.

Action will take place at over 25 different gym floors in Springfield. In a true partnership amongst all facilities and entities in Springfield, the event will feature over 900 games. Games will be played at facilities such as Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town, The Clubhouse, The Field House, Strafford Sports Center, Baptist Bible College, Drury University, Evangel University, Springfield Public Schools facilities, and community centers in the region.

The event creates a significant impact on the community. Teams converge from all over the nation which generates significant overnight travel. The Sports Commission estimates anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000 room nights are generated through the event at hotels and short-term rentals in the Springfield area. The 8,000 to 10,000 guests will visit area attractions, shop, and dine in the Springfield area, and create estimated direct economic spending of over $5,200,000.

Executive Director Lance Kettering said, “We are excited to welcome nearly 400 teams to Springfield for a basketball competition. Springfield prides itself on being a basketball community and we look forward to our version of March Madness in the Springfield Area!”

WILSON LOGISTICS ARENA

OPENS WITH MISSOURI USA WRESTLING

Recently the Sports Commission and Convention & Visitors Bureau inked a three year commitment to host the Missouri USA Wrestling State Championship Series. The agreement calls for the Rookies, 6U, Boys State Championships, Girls State Championships and the Greco & Freestyle Championships to Springfield at the Wilson Logistics Arena at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds.

During the January 19-21 weekend, Springfield’s newest venue hosted the Missouri USA Rookies and 6U Championships. Over 900 wrestlers competed at the Rookies level with another 400 vying in the 6U Championships. The event was the first youth sports event held at Wilson Logistics Arena. Estimated direct economic spending for the event for the four weekends is over $1.9 million that will be pumped into the local economy.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

2024

January 19-21 Rookie & 6U Championships

March 8-10 Boys State Championships

March 30 Girls State Championships

May 3-5 Freestyle & Greco Championships

Lance Kettering, Executive Director of the Sports Commission, commended the Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds team for their vision to build the new arena. “It has been very clear that the arena was going to be a huge asset for travel and tourism. The interest in sports events has been tremendous. We look forward to hosting many events at Wilson Logistics Arena, we know our guests will enjoy the opportunities at this facility.”

MAJOR USA BMX NATIONAL EVENT AND USA CYCLING

EVENTS COMING TO SPRINGFIELD

The Sports Commission, alongside partners Spokes BMX and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, left an indelible mark on the national BMX scene by hosting the USA BMX Gold Cup in 2015 and 2021, as well as the 2017 USA BMX Mid America Nationals. These successes laid the groundwork for Springfield’s recognition as a top contender to host an Indoor National event.

The Wilson Logistics Arena played a crucial role in securing the bid for the 2024 Nationals, thanks to its cutting-edge design and Springfield’s proven track record in hosting successful events. Beyond the USA BMX Show Me State Nationals, Springfield attracted USA Cycling’s BMX Collegiate National Championships, further solidifying its status as a hub for top-tier cycling events.

As Springfield prepares for the event, the Wilson Logistics Arena will undergo a remarkable transformation into a BMX track, creating a spectacle set to launch on Friday, March 1. Anticipation is high, with over 1,000 riders expected to converge on Springfield from across the United States, marking it as a highlight on the 2024 USA BMX tour.

That same weekend, Springfield will also host around 10 Collegiate Teams, adding another layer of competition to the mix with the USA Cycling BMX Collegiate National Championships taking place from March 2-3. These teams will vie for a National Championship title

Beyond the thrill of competition, Springfield stands to gain economically, with an estimated direct economic spending of $1.1 million, providing a significant boost to the local economy. The community eagerly awaits the convergence of talent, adrenaline, and economic vitality that will undoubtedly solidify Springfield’s position as a premier destination for BMX enthusiasts nationwide.

SPRINGFIELD ESPORTS COALITION HOSTS MOSEF EVENT

In January 2023, in response to the growing Esports market, the Sports Commission proactively established the Springfield Esports Coalition. This vital component of the Springfield Sports Commission consists of a dedicated committee, including representatives from the board of directors, with support from Contender Esports and the local gaming community.

A primary goal of the coalition was to bring state-level championships to Springfield, and this objective came to fruition with the successful hosting of the 2023 Missouri Esports Federation (MOSEF) Fall Brawl. This event showcased state championship competitions in Rocket League and Overwatch 2, marking a significant achievement for the Esports Coalition in promoting and advancing the Esports scene in the region.

The MOSEF Fall Brawl unfolded at two different venues. On Friday, December 1, Classic’s Yard hosted the Rocket League championships, with twelve schools from across Missouri participating. St. John Vianney High School emerged as the large school division champion, while Mid-Buchanan High School claimed victory in the small school division.

Saturday’s competition moved to the Ozarks Technical Community College campus, home of the OTC Eagles Esports program, featuring Overwatch 2. Eight High School teams competed in this championship. The finals witnessed intense competition, concluding with Blue Springs South defeating St. John Vianney.

The Sports Commission thoroughly enjoyed hosting the MOSEF Fall Brawl and eagerly anticipates bidding on additional Esports opportunities in the future.

NXTPRO HOOPS SELECTS SPRINGFIELD

The NXTPRO Hoops Series is coming to Springfield July 5-7, 2024.

The high-profile basketball event will bring about 100 teams to The Clubhouse and The Fieldhouse in Springfield and the Strafford Sports Center during the Fourth of July weekend. About 95% of the teams will be from out-of-town, generating 1,500 room nights at hotels and over $1 million in economic impact.

Sports Commission Executive Director Lance Kettering expressed excitement about the upcoming event, commenting, “We are thrilled to partner with Strafford Sports Center, The Clubhouse, and The Fieldhouse to bring this high-level event to Springfield. Springfield and the surrounding area have always been known for their appreciation of basketball, and this event should further illustrate southwest Missouri’s love of basketball. We thank our facility partners for opening their doors for this event.”

Matt Reynolds, president of NXTPRO, said Springfield is an excellent location for the event. “NXTPRO and PUMA Basketball are thrilled to partner with Springfield to host one of our national events during our 2024 circuit. TRIATHLON SUCCESS IN SPRINGFIELD AND FELLOWS LAKE

The NCAA Division II Women’s Triathlon West Regional in Springfield showcases successful collaboration among diverse entities. On October 14, 17 teams from across the nation gathered at Fellows Lake for this USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Heartland Racing, Drury University, City Utilities of Springfield, and the Sports Commission joined forces to host the competition.

The synergy of City Utilities, Drury, and Heartland Racing in organizing this event at Fellows Lake was truly remarkable. The Sports Commission’s branding, alongside that of the other 17 schools, added to the event atmosphere. Reflecting on the collaboration, Executive Director Lance Kettering offered these remarks, “It was amazing to see the partnership of City Utilities, Drury, and Heartland Racing come together to put on this USA Triathlon sanctioned NCAA event at Fellows Lake. What a wonderful event! We are most appreciative of City Utilities allowing for the use of Fellows Lake for the competition, and we are already looking forward to next year.”

The competition featured a diverse array of schools, including the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Black Hills State, Cal Poly-Humboldt, Colorado Mesa, Drury, Lenoir Rhyne, Montana State-Billings, University of San Francisco, TCU, Millikin, North Central (NC), Calvin, Central (IA), Coe (IA), Concordia (WI), and Willamette (OR). The Springfield Sports Commission not only brings thrilling sports events to the city but also actively endeavors to attract event planners, providing them with a firsthand experience of what Springfield has to offer. A standout event in this effort is the Missouri Sports Travel Exchange, a gathering that brings together sports event planners and representatives from various destinations across Missouri. The primary objective of this event is to establish a platform for planners and sports destination leaders to explore potential business opportunities for their respective cities.

Taking place from March 4-6 and organized in collaboration with the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau, this event goes beyond conventional networking. It encompasses educational sessions dedicated to sharing industry insights and updates. Notably John David the CEO and President of Sports ETA will be providing an industry update to the attendees. Springfield’s very own Brett Payne, Founder and CEO of Contender Esports will present “Royal Innovations: The Tale

of a Crown Prince, ESports the Hidden Gem in Every US City.” In addition to these sessions, participants can look forward to a Sports Familiarization tour in Springfield on March 4, followed by an opening celebration at the Wonders of Wildlife. Tuesday evening will culminate in a reception in The Vantage at the Hotel Vandivort.

The Missouri Sports Travel Exchange, organized by the Missouri Travel Alliance, promises a dynamic blend of networking, education, and exploration for all involved. It represents an invaluable opportunity to showcase Springfield’s appeal and establish meaningful connections within the expansive landscape of sports events.

USA PICKLEBALL MIDDLE STATES REGIONAL RETURNS IN 2024 AND THE SPORT GROWS IN SPRINGFIELD

For the second consecutive year, the beloved sport of pickleball is leaving its mark in Springfield with the return of the USA Pickleball Middle States Regional. Scheduled to unfold at

the Cooper Tennis Complex from May 30 to June 2, 2024, this event promises thrilling matches and enthusiastic participation.

Lance Kettering, Executive Director, expressed the success of hosting the 2023 USA Pickleball Middle States Regional and the 2023 USA Pickleball North Sector Ambassador Meetings and Retreat. An estimated 600 competitors will visit Springfield for the event, contributing to an estimated economic spending of over $275,000 for the four-day extravaganza.

The growing popularity of pickleball is evident not only in regional events but also in the vibrant activities at Drury University.

The university has announced plans for a co-ed pickleball team, with exciting developments underway, including the construction of the Panther Pad—a multi-purpose facility featuring six new pickleball courts, revitalized basketball and tennis courts, and a pavilion grill and beverage area for students and spectators alike.

SPRINGFIELD SPORTS COMMISSION

WELCOMES NEW STAFF MEMBER

The Springfield Sports Commission would like to announce the newest addition to our organization, Mr. Stan Adams, who joins us as the Director of Sports Business Development. Stan and his wife, Allie, have recently made the move from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and we are thrilled to have them as Springfield’s newest residents!

Stan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his role. A graduate of the University of Alabama, he holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in sports management. His academic achievements have laid a solid foundation for his impressive career in the sports business sector.

Prior to his relocation to Springfield, Stan served as the Sports Business Representative for Wicomico County in Maryland and was then the Executive Director of Sports at Visit Tuscaloosa where he made significant contributions to the growth of sports-related activities in the region.

We are confident that Stan’s extensive background and leadership skills will play a pivotal role in advancing the sports business landscape in Springfield. His passion for sports and commitment to fostering strong community connections align seamlessly with the values of the Springfield Sports Commission.

Upon Stan’s hire he offered these remarks “I am immensely excited about the opportunity to join such an amazing organization that already exists at the Springfield Sports Commission. I look forward to building on the success that Lance and his team have already built over the years. Combining the first-class facilities with my 8 years of experience in the industry, I am extremely eager to get started. I would like to thank Visit Tuscaloosa for helping me get to this point in my career. The past 6 years have been nothing but an amazing ride that has led me to this next chapter. Springfield is a community that both my wife and I are thrilled to be moving to and cannot wait to be a part of.”

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Stan and Allie. We look forward to achieving new heights and successes together with Stan on the team!

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

Q: What is your day job?

A: Sporty HR Banker for Central Bank of the Ozarks

Q: What is your favorite aspect of your job?

A: Coaching and Assisting others to reach their career aspirations or finding the right talent to add to the team.

Q: Why did you join the Sports Commission?

A: I was recruited by Erin Boster, who is another board member. I thought I knew what the Sports Commission did, but it is so much more. Once I read through what the Commission did to bring sports to our area for the enjoyment of watching, but also bringing economic development by visitors staying in our hotels, buying food, visiting local sites, and buying our local products, I knew I had to take part.

Q: What do you love most about the Sports Commission?

A: I think all competitive people love the “get.” The “get” in the sports commission is when we land a big event. When we put out a media announcement that we are bringing a week of homeschool sports or that the NXTPRO basketball tournament, which could have picked anywhere in the country but chose this area, it feels fantastic!

Q: What’s your most significant professional accomplishment(s) so far?

A: My athletic life is competing for Team USA in the Sydney Olympics. Walking into the Opening Ceremonies knowing everything you worked for has come to fruition. My “real” career is Human Resources. I get the privilege of overseeing our Prosper U program. It is an honor that I was picked to lead this when it doesn’t really fit under the Human Resources um-

brella. Central Bank dedicates talent and time to giving free financial education to our community. We hired the right Director/Talent. We have helped almost 800 people in our first six months!

Q: When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time?

A: I like to spend time hanging out with my family and walking and playing ball with our dogs, Oliver and Frankie. I love watching college football the most, but will watch anything sports-related. I find the most joy in following my son all over the country, doing things he loves, and hanging out with my husband.

Q: If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?

A: It would be pretty cool to see what a female power 5 athletic director like Desiree Reed-Francois at Mizzou does to succeed in a male-dominated profession.

Q: What characteristics do you admire most in others?

A: Hard work and the ability to stay positive and find solutions instead of roadblocks and those that show traits of being a good teammate.

SPORTS COMMISSION AWARDS

SET FOR JUNE 18

Mark you calendars for June 18 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds Eplex. The Sports Commission presents the 12th annual Elliott Lodging Springfield Sports Commission Awards.

Originating in the 2012-2013 school year, this yearly gathering serves as a platform to honor exceptional athletic accomplishments by individuals and teams across southwest Missouri. The event goes beyond accolades, spotlighting inspirational moments and recognizing the region’s top boys and girls athlete, as well as the top boys and girls team.

Since its inception, the Sports Commission has bestowed nearly 500 awards, honoring over 2,000 deserving individual athletes and teams who have left an indelible mark on the sporting landscape. This event isn’t just a ceremony; it’s a celebration of the talent and dedication found in Ozarks area High School Sports.

Lance Kettering, Executive Director, highlighted the crucial role of corporate support from Elliott Lodging in making the event possible. “Elliott Lodging was at the forefront, being the first to lend their support as the title sponsor for this event, and they persist in fulfilling this vital role today. Having a title sponsor consistently for 12 years is truly impressive, and we are honored to continue receiving their steadfast support.”

If you’re eager to be part of this community staple, like Elliott Lodging, various opportunities await your support. Reach out to a member of the Sports Commission team at sports@ springfieldmo.org to join in the celebration and contribute to the recognition of excellence in high school sports.

PBA BOWLING COMING TO ENTERPRISE LANES

Pete Weber’s greatness and persona has touched every corner of professional bowling. The history of the PBA cannot be told without him — and neither will the 2024 season.

The fourth title event of the season in Springfield, Mo. — Weber’s home state — will be the PBA Pete Weber Missouri Classic. The event will be held at Enterprise Park Lanes, Feb. 12 - 18 with the finals being aired live on FS1 at 1 pm ET for a national television audience.

Pete Weber is among the most accomplished players the PBA Tour has ever seen. He’s the only player to win the Triple Crown twice over, and remains the youngest player to reach 10 and 20 PBA Tour titles.

“Pete is the most fascinating bowler the sport has seen,” said PBA Tour Commissioner Tom Clark. “While many equate Pete with his classic antics on the lanes, to me it’s Pete’s timeless gift to bowl that puts him at one with the essence of the game and is mesmerizing,” Clark continued. “Having his name on the tournament means the event will be all the more special.”

The classic will have a total of 64 bowlers competing for a total prize pool of $180,000. The field will be comprised of:

• The top 50 2023 PBA Tour point leaders

• PBA Tour Champions winning from 2014 – 2023 (that are not in the PBA Top 50)

• Up to two (2) Commissioners Exemptions

“The Springfield Sports Commission is extremely proud to be a partner of this amazing event”, said Springfield Sports Commissions’ Director of Sports Business Development Stan Adams. “Enterprise Park Lanes is a fantastic facility that has been the host of the Greater Ozarks Open for the past 66 years which makes it the perfect location to host a major PBA Tour event. Bowling is a major part of this community and to have the opportunity to partner with Keegan Standage of Enterprise Park and the PBA Tour was a no-brainer for us.”

Enterprise Park Lanes hosted its first-ever PBA Tour stop last season. Sam Cooley defeated Springfield native Keven Williams in the title match on BowlTV.
