CHRISTIAN MURDOCK, THE GAZETTE

Whole fresh artichoke with lamb at Tajine Alami in Manitou Springs.

THE DISH

Top 5 favorite dishes by Teresa J. Farney, food editor teresa.farney@gazette.com

BURRATA ALLA BELLA VITA

LA BELLA VITA RISTORANTE ITALIANO 4475 Northpark Drive, 260-4730, labellavitaristorante.net Giuliano Casulli, owner and executive chef, spares no expense to spoil customers with authentic dishes, particularly this appetizer. He starts with a thick square of bread that is brushed lightly with fine olive oil and grilled. Then he tops the crostini with crispy grilled prosciutto, a thick slice of tomato, a wedge of creamy burrata cheese and a drizzle of pesto oil. This could make a meal by itself. $11.75

BORSCHT

P.J.’S BISTRO 1015 W. Colorado Ave., 632-6309, pjsbistro.com Thank you, Paul Jakubczyk, for moving the bistro from Manitou Springs to near downtown. Now it’s possible for Colorado Springs residents to enjoy the light version of borscht that chef Asia Barczynska ladles up more often. She calls it “clear borscht.” The bright red soup is more like a broth with a few chopped beets. The delicious crowning jewel is a fat, handmade mushroom ravioli. Sour cream, if you must, is delivered on the side. $5.95 for a cup and $7.95 for a bowl.

CARNE ADOVADA

DOUG’S BREAKFAST, LUNCH 3659 Austin Bluffs Parkway, 354-4620, dougsbreakfastlunch.com Looking for a big plate of food with a New Mexico-style flare? Here’s the place to tuck in for excellently prepared eggs, hash browns, pancakes and other comfort food. The carne adovada ($10) is at the top of my list. The slowly braised pork is piled onto a blue corn tortilla covered with butter browns (hash brown potatoes) and topped with New Mexico red chili. I asked for Christmas, meaning I got half red chili and half green chili. Both full of flavor.

WHOLE FRESH ARTICHOKE

TAJINE ALAMI 10 Old Man’s Trail, Manitou Springs, 685-1119, tajinealamimanitousprings.com Here’s the place to go for an exotic dining experience. After all, you’re seated on the floor, eating with your fingers, watching belly dancers twirling brightly colored silk scarves and keeping rhythm to the music with finger cymbals. Add to the mood by ordering the specially spiced whole artichoke ($14). The veggie is simmered in broth seasoned with turmeric, cumin, coriander, lemons and olives. It’s presented in the small tajine in which it was braised. As the waiter lifts the conelike lid of the tajine, your senses are awakened with the aroma of a Moroccan market. In a way, you’ve taken a magic carpet ride to the Middle East without the expense of airfare. 4 2015 DINING GUIDE

Then he douses the pan of goodness with about a half bottle of Abita beer. Several slices of crispy grilled bread come alongside for sopping up the flavorful cooking broth.

BREAKFAST

THE KITCHEN 1025 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs, 424-7444 Don’t be surprised if you’re issued an apology as soon as you walk in the door. It’s probably because the homemade cinnamon rolls ($4) need a little more time in the oven. You aren’t likely to go hungry, though. The k’uiche ($8) provides an excellent example of the owner’s culinary expertise — honed from operating a food cart for many years in Portland, Ore. The quiche boasts a flaky crust with an airy egg custard. Be sure to get the home fries — diced chunks of potatoes seasoned with onions and pieces of bacon. If you’re too full for the cinnamon rolls, get one to go.

CHRISTIAN MURDOCK, THE GAZETTE

The margherita pizza at Duca’s Neapolitan Pizza in Colorado Springs. The pizzas bake quickly in Duca’s 800degree, brick, wood-fired oven.

PIZZA

DUCA’S NEAPOLITAN PIZZA 12229 Voyager Parkway, #170, 487-3200; 236 E. Cheyenne Mountain Blvd., 247-8830, ducaspizza.com Thanks to an 800-degree, brick, wood-fired oven, it takes longer to select the toppings than it does for the pizza to bake. It helps, too, that this is Neapolitan style, which means the crust is exceptionally thin. But that doesn’t mean it lacks texture or flavor — it has plenty of both. Everything is made to order and diners have the option of selecting one of the three classics (marinara, white or margherita, $5.75 to $9.95) or from the list of eight specialty pizzas ($8.95 to $10.95). There’s also the option of creating your own pie. No matter what, the result will be full-flavored and fast.

PANANG CURRY

THAI MINT 1725 Briargate Blvd., 598-7843; thai-mint.com With seven types of curries to choose from, the Panang Curry ($9.95) is among the more traditional. Thai Mint earns high marks for its version. It’s considered one of the milder Thai curries, but that doesn’t mean it’s bland. In fact, it’s slightly sweet, but not in a cloying way. The nuances of the fish sauce, lemongrass, Thai basil, red curry paste and coconut milk combine for a fragrant dish topped with chopped kaffir lime leaves. It’s possible to ask for a little more spice heat, but a lot of its charm is its sweetness.

AVOCADO TOAST

FIFTY-FIFTY COFFEE HOUSE 330 N. Institute St. Sure, go to Fifty-Fifty for the coffee, but don’t overlook the food options. The simplicity of the Avocado Toast ($5.50) is part of its appeal. Thick slices of just-the-right-softness avocado, doused with a blend of honey and spicy Sriracha, are layered over a toasted bagel, or you can opt for an English muffin. A sprinkling of sea salt is like a savory icing. The unusual orange hue of the sauce over the green fruit doesn’t create the perfect color palette, but when something tastes this good, who cares?

FISH STREET TACOS

ACME BAR & GRILL 925 8th St., 634-2263, acmebarcolorado.com For now, the fish tacos ($9.95) have yet to land a permanent place on Acme’s menu. That doesn’t mean they won’t. Everyone who ventures into this friendly bar and grill should request these beautifully plated, exceptionally flavorful soft tacos. After all, that’s how the Brandonburg ($9.95) became a menu “keeper.” The tacos are served with a pineapple and mango salsa that tops golden-fried battered cod wrapped in corn tortillas. The fish is drizzled with Sriracha mayonnaise for a surprisingly delicate kick of spice. As for that burger, it’s juicy and, thanks to the addition of blue cheese dressing, pepper jack cheese and jalapeño, its place on the menu is well-deserved. It can share the limelight with the tacos. 2015 DINING GUIDE
