DO –  consult your vet about your dog’s overall health before going to a park  make sure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations  observe dogs in the park for potential health/behavior problems  clean up after your dog  supervise dogs when they are playing and interrupt any rough play  be willing to leave if your dog is being a bully or the play is getting too rough

DON’T –  bring a dog that is under four months old to a dog park  take sensitive dogs to an enclosed park where there are more than 2 dogs for every 20 square yards of space  bring or use treats and toys near other dogs  allow dogs to form loose packs or bully each other  let your dog off-leash in an unfenced dog park if he is not responsive to your verbal commands  bring intact males or females in estrus to a dog park  spend your time talking on a cell phone — you must supervise your dog at all times

hiking with your dog 1. Follow the rules of the trail. Do not take your dog on a trail where dogs are forbidden or take him off-leash when the rules call for on-leash dogs only.

2. Carry enough clean water for you and your dog. Drinking out of mountain streams can give your dog (and you) some nasty parasites. Purchase a soft, collapsible dog bowl that is lightweight and convenient for hikes.

3. Make sure your dog is fit enough for the

length of hike and type of trail you are planning to tackle, and always take a good trail map.

4. Always clean up after your dog. Bring plenty of potty bags in case more than one cleanup is needed.

5. Make sure you bring basic first aid materials for humans and canines alike.

Always bring a cell phone in case of an injury that leaves you or your dog immobile. It is always best to hike in groups.

6. Move to the right of the trail when passing another hiker, and restrain your dog. Not everyone wants to meet and greet your four-legged buddy!

7. Teach your dog to pay attention to you when passing other hikers or

animals. Bring a toy or treats to gain your dog’s attention while passing another dog or person.

8. Use the right equipment. If you know your dog pulls while walking, switch to a harness or “Gentle Leader.”

have pets, will travel While pets are beloved members of the family, they are often left behind when their owners travel, simply because many owners don’t know how to travel with their furry friends in tow. These pet travel tips will help keep you (and your pets) calm, allowing you both to enjoy the ride.

What to bring:

• Flea/tick prevention treatments and other medications your pet might be taking • Updated I.D. tags for traveling, complete with information on how to reach you while you’re on the trip • Clean-up bags and pooper scoopers • Food and water bowls — collapsible, light, leak proof and long lasting are best! • A photo in case your pet gets lost • Tennis ball or a favorite toy for tossing at rest stops • Using a carrier? Make sure your name, phone number and email are clearly labeled.

Tips for a smooth trip

You might want to ask your vet for sedating and/or anti-nausea medications. Make sure you do a check-up with your vet before the trip as well.

Before you place your pet in a carrier, attached his collar, leash and harness. You don’t want to risk losing him during a struggle to attach these items at the airport or a rest stop. Either bring your pet’s usual food, or make sure it will be available at your destination. Be sure to bring a few mealsized portions for before you arrive. If your pet sleeps with special bedding, make space for this so he feels at home. The scent of home will comfort him.

Going on a plane?

• Check ahead with the airline to understand its pet policies. • Airlines require animals be at least eight weeks old and fully weaned before traveling. • Fly direct, when possible. • Only pets in good health and behavior are often allowed to fly. • Bring copies of current medical and vaccination records from your vet. • To avoid temperature extremes, fly at night in the summer and during the day in the winter months. • Contact the airline to reserve a space for your pet as early as possible and reconfirm within 36 hours of departure. • Feed your pet within four hours of check-in and keep water on hand to hydrate them while waiting for boarding. • Travel with plastic, not wire carriers, as no part of the animal should protrude from the cage. • Be sure the carrier fits the pet. Your pet should be able to stand up and turn. • Carriers must have a solid, leak-proof floor, covered with a towel or other absorbent lining in case of accidents.

Oatmeal, peanut butter & banana dog treats

Ingredients: 1 egg 1/3 cup peanut butter (chunky or creamy) 1 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup oats 1/2 cup mashed banana Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 300°F. 2. Combine all ingredients in your mixing bowl. 3. Knead dough until ball forms. Add a little more flour if the dough is sticky. 4. Flatten dough on counter or cutting board, either with your hands or a rolling pin. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour. 5. Use doggie cookie cutters to cut pieces out. 6. Prepare cookie sheet by spritzing olive oil across the surface, or use parchment paper. 7. Bake at 300°F for about 20 minutes. This recipe will make a few dozen cookies. All ingredients are safe for human consumption. Because of the egg, it is not recommended to feed the dough to your pup while it’s raw.
