PREMIER SPONSOR: Amada Senior Care
Long-term care insurance experts partner with families for optimal senior care In describing what distinguishes Amada Senior Care’s philosophy from their competitors’, CEO/Owner Ken Jenson offers a prime example: “You’d be shocked at how many times companies say, ‘Oh no — only your Mom is our client, so we will only make breakfast for her.’” He continues, “I think one of the biggest differences that Amada brings to the table is, if we’re there cooking breakfast for Mom, we will also cook breakfast for Dad. If we’re there doing laundry for Mom, we will also do Dad’s laundry. We’re there for the whole family.” Another advantage that Amada has, is that they’re experts at helping families navigate the ins and outs of
using long-term care insurance and VA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) Aid and Attendance benefits to pay for a myriad of services. Says Jenson, “A lot of seniors started investing in long-term care insurance eight to 25 years ago. We come in and help a family activate their policy. We bill the insurance company directly, they’ll pay us directly, and once we get through the deductible period that family pays no more money out of pocket. So instead of paying up to $30,000 over a threemonth period and having to wait to be reimbursed, we take that on. We become a partner with that family.” He explains that when it comes to long-term care insurance, families
often look at the value on the policy from the day it was written; not realizing that most of those policies have been growing with interest for years, and may be worth up to quadruple the face value. Says Jenson, “When we explain the value of these policies, people want to use them. Once everyone knows what they have, they can make decisions.” Jenson recounts how he even entrusted the care of his own parents to Amada. “My dad had a stroke about 10 years ago, so my mom became his caregiver. All of us kids thought, ‘Mom’s there, she’ll take care of Dad.’ But then she had a mini-stroke and all of a sudden it hit all of us — ‘What are we going to
do? We can’t have Mom taking care of Dad anymore.’” Jenson enlisted Amada’s services to provide care for them, but when he informed his parents of this, they fought the idea fearing that they’d lose their independence. But, he says, “Within about a week they fell in love with their caregiver, and as their son, I no longer had to worry.” He shakes his head as he recalls the irony, “They kicked and screamed at first … but when their caregiver later got married and moved away, they cried. They were so sad, because they had lost a friend. She gave my mom and dad more independence than they ever thought they could’ve had.”

STEPPING ON
Why should you be concerned about falling? Falling is very common. It can result in injury and can shake your confidence. The threat of falling can be a barrier to safely doing all the things you want to do at home and in the community. That’s why preventing falls is critical
to maintaining independence. If you’re 60 years or older, have had a fall in the last year, are fearful of falling, live at home and do not have dementia, then Stepping On is specifically designed for you. The program has been researched and proven to reduce falls in older adults. Topics covered include: Simple and fun balance and strength training, the role vision plays in keeping your balance, how medications can contribute to falls, ways to keep from falling when you’re out and about, what to look for in safe footwear and how to eliminate fall hazards in your home. More than one third of people over 65 years of age fall each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury, hospitalization for trauma and death
among older adults. Studies show that 35 percent of people who fall become less active, and 40 percent of people who enter a nursing home have had a fall in the prior 30 days.
STOP THE BLEED
The 2012 tragedy in Sandy Hook, as well as the multiple tragedies that have occurred in the ensuing years inspired the creation of what has come to be known as the Hartford Consensus. It was convened to bring together leaders from law enforcement, the federal government and the medical community to improve the rate of survival in man-made or natural mass-casualty events. In many situations, there may be a delay between the time of injury and
the time a first responder is on the scene. Without civilian intervention in these circumstances, preventable deaths will occur. The purpose of this demonstration will be to inform, educate and empower citizens with comprehensive and sustainable bleeding control knowledge. The injuries from these events generally present severe bleeding which, if left unattended, can result in death. The participants of the Hartford Consensus concluded that by providing first responders and civilian bystanders the skills and basic tools to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency situation, lives will be saved. The first responder program has received a very good response and is being used widely across the country.
PREMIER SPONSOR: Humana
What you need to know this Medicare enrollment season It’s that time of year when people with Medicare review their health insurance choices and enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug plan for the coming year. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions Humana licensed health insurance agents get from consumers during the Medicare Annual Election Period:
However, you should review your Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan coverage annually, since Medicare plans and personal circumstances can change every year. If you take no action during the annual enrollment period, you’ll typically be automatically reenrolled in your same medical or prescription plan for 2019.
WHAT IS THE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD TO CHOOSE A MEDICARE PLAN FOR 2019?
DOES MEDICARE INCLUDE COVERAGE FOR MY PRESCRIPTION DRUGS?
The Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Annual Election Period takes place from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2018, for coverage that takes effect Jan. 1, 2019.
DO I HAVE TO RE-ENROLL IN MEDICARE EVERY YEAR? You don’t need to sign up for Original Medicare each year.
4 | SENIOR LIFE EXPO 2018
Original Medicare does not cover most prescription drugs. Many Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage, or you can sign up for a Part D Prescription Drug Plan separately. A licensed agent can look up your medications and tell you what the cost of each drug would be on a plan.
HOW ARE HEALTH INSURERS LIKE HUMANA ABLE TO OFFER MEDICARE
ADVANTAGE PLANS WITH NO MONTHLY PREMIUM?
Private insurers keep premiums low through programs like disease and chronic care management, which help people better manage health conditions and, in turn, reduce health care costs. Keep in mind that you still need to pay your Medicare Part B premium, which covers medical services and preventive care. You might want to use the additional premium dollars you save for out-of-pocket medical costs, such as co-pays.
HOW DO I FIND OUT IF MY DOCTORS, HOSPITALS AND SPECIALISTS ARE IN MY MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PROVIDER NETWORK? Most Medicare Advantage plans offer easy-to-use online tools to help you find doctors and hospitals that are in the plan’s network. A licensed agent can also help you
look up hospitals and doctors to see if they’re accepting a plan and taking new patients.
IF I SELECT A MEDICARE PLAN FOR THE COMING YEAR, AND THEN FIND I DON’T LIKE IT, CAN I DROP IT AND CHOOSE ANOTHER PLAN?
The plan you select by Dec. 7 will be your Medicare plan for all of 2019, with few exceptions, so it’s wise to research your options carefully. If you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan for 2019, and then find it’s not the right fit, between Jan. 1 and March 31, there will be an Open Enrollment Period during which you can switch from a Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Advantage-Prescription Drug Plan to another Medicare Advantage plan with or without prescription drug coverage, or choose Original Medicare with or without a standalone Prescription Drug Plan.

Here at Amada Colorado Springs, it is our goal to meet all of a family’s
senior care needs and to exceed their expectations of what care can be. If we have been brought in to provide in-home care for a senior, we go beyond assisting them with activities of daily living like cooking and housekeeping to enrich our client’s life in the most meaningful ways we can. This could mean discussing a favorite scripture with Aunt May, or baking Dad’s favorite cookies, or even helping Grandma keep her prized flower garden tidy. By adding these personal touches to the care we provide, we are able to show our senior clients that they are truly valued as we vastly improve the quality of their lives.
When home is no longer the ideal environment for a senior, we will guide that senior and his or her family to the assisted living environment that ideally suits their unique needs and preferences. We will even continue to check in on clients who have moved to senior housing communities, just to make sure we haven’t missed an opportunity to be of service to them. We invite you to contact us at Amada Senior Care Colorado Springs to learn more about how we can help a senior in your life age with dignity and give your family the peace of mind they deserve. Veteran volunteers at The National Museum of WWII Aviation are dedicated to telling the unwritten story.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WORLD WAR II AVIATION IN COLORADO SPRINGS ✮✮✮✮✮✮ is a one of-a-kind museum in which nearly half of the volunteers are veterans who are dedicated to telling the story of early war times. Volunteer co-owner of the museum and president of West Pac Restorations, Bill Klaers, evolved his passions of military history into a community legacy. John Lopes and Nick Cressy are among approximately 45 veteran volunteers at the aviation museum who work as docents. Jack Humphrey, retired Army and Air Force Academy graduate, volunteers in the construction of exhibits and display cabinets throughout the museum. “For us, it’s important to put it all together so people have something to see.” Humphrey said.
BY LESLIE JAMES, leslie.james@gazette.com
Veteran volunteers create an open and welcoming space for others who have served. War stories, good-natured teasing and a common bond float among, what is safe to call, a brotherhood throughout the volunteers. “We kid each other about which service was better,” Humphrey said. Lopes started as an employee of Westpac Restorations, the company that restores aircraft and also holds a prop shop that serves clients all over the world. In 2012, he was among many volunteers who started the construction of the museum. Lopes retired from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant after more then over 33 years in the service. As a Hawaiian native, he witnessed the attacks on Pearl Harbor when he was about five years old.
“We pay tribute to those warriors by the work we do and what we do to tell their story, so that they’re not forgotten.” 10 | SENIOR LIFE EXPO 2018
“For me, 9/11 was Pearl Harbor all over again, and I was bemoaning the fact: ‘What did we learn from history? Absolutely nothing.’ Because now I’m witnessing a second Pearl Harbor. But what I also witnessed was another great generation answer the call and respond. There is something about the American spirit.” The museum’s docents focus on involving touring students emotionally and teaching history differently than in textbooks.
“This museum is not dedicated to the warrior, it’s dedicated to the American people. The people who built the weaponry that we fought the war with, and the kids we sent off to war.” “But it’s imperative that we teach the modern generation about what the older generation did.”
From left to right: John Lopes, Jack Humphrey, Nick Cressy
The artifacts on display revolve around the STEM program, focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (that is the “buzzword” in education today). Lopes highlighted that it is necessary for the students who visit the museum to know the subject matter before they can ask questions. “If there’s no one to tell the story, then it gets lost. And right now we’ve got people who are rewriting history to satisfy political wants, needs or whatever, he said. “Our job here is to tell history the way it was, and of the unsung war heroes — the young men.” “When you come here, hopefully you’re thirsting for knowledge about what these kids went through and what the American people did to build the weaponry that you look at.” Lopes said that after guiding students through the museum, he knows that often times the children go home to their parents with excitement, attracting the adults too. The museum’s collection includes over 3,000 artifacts and documents that represent one of America’s most historically significant times, according to the museum’s website. The aircraft on display throughout the museum shows what aviation technology was like during World War II, and most of the planes have been restored to flying condition. The museum holds the title to some of the airplanes, while others are on loan to the museum from private collectors. A tour of Westpac Restorations is also included in any of the museum’s tour.
“We build the airplanes better than they did in World War II. We love what we do.” “As of the airplanes we are trying to replicate, in 1943 there was a pilot waiting to go do combat with bad guys. That’s an important fact. We pay tribute to those warriors by the work we do and what we do to tell their story so that they’re not forgotten. But the reality is, they were humans just like us. They all contributed something to our freedom.” Lopes said. Cressy retired from the Army as a Colonel and is a Vietnam veteran. Along with the camaraderie in the museum, Cressy enjoys getting out of the house and working with other volunteers. The veteran volunteers show many interests and commonalities, especially through war stories. “I enjoy being here, for what it is and what it represents; to be dedicated to telling the story.” Cressy also agrees that the museum acts as a gathering place for past or active military men and women to keep memories fresh of those who were lost during war, and have a place to honor each other. “I was 57 when I was in Afghanistan, and to see anyone wounded or killed in combat, you never forget that, but we have to remember them. If we remember them, they’re never forgotten.” “This is where it gets emotional,” Lopes said. “The people who are not here to speak for themselves, are the people we honor and we cherish.”
The museum is a heart that beats within the body of a military city. The museum was honored as one of the 11 museums in the country to have a national designation. “It’s important for us in donations and recognition,” Cressy said. “Everybody juggles a lot of balls,” said Humphrey. But the museum is open to volunteers who’d like to contribute on their own time, whether they work every day or once a week. “Restorations can take three or four years, and a lot of money.” “It took an amazing coming-together of people. I thank Bill Klaers for his leadership capabilities, for being able to project the image of what he wanted this museum to represent: Our statement to the world about who and what we are, and what we care about,” Lopes said. To tell the story of the losses and gains of a remarkable war, the veteran volunteers dedicate many hours to educate how the war really was.
“America would not be what it is today industrially if not for World War II,” Humphrey said. Cressy reminds any veteran of any war that, “We all did our duty, no matter where it was, and we are proud of it.” To find out more about the museum or volunteering go to WorldWarIIAviation.org. BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE
Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits METRO SERVICES
The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of dementia and other neurological issues.
EXERCISE
Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with I’m looking to move but am not sure if I will qualify for a mortgage now that I’m retired.
Making that monthly mortgage payment is tough sometimes.
I want to retire and stay in my home, but I need a new roof and kitchen
physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.
QUIT SMOKING
The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.
EAT HEALTHY FOODS
Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains,
fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets such as Mediterranean and MediterraneanDASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.
CONSUME CAFFEINE
Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and
anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.
WORK THE BRAIN
Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.
