Christmas

Germany IN

N

COURTESY OF EDELWEISS RESTAURANT

o one does Christmas better than the Germans! In Germany, Christmas begins on the first Sunday in December — the first day of Advent. Germans traditionally hang up a wreath with four candles, and each Sunday beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas a candle is lit, until finally Christmas arrives. Saint Nikolaus and his helper Knecht Ruprecht will come on December 6 and visit all the children. He carries a large sack filled with nuts and apples and also a notebook, which tells him who has been good or who has been bad. Good children will get apples and nuts, and bad children will get a spanking from Knecht Ruprecht. Saint Nikolaus will also make notes for The Christ Child. If Saint Nikolaus does not have time to visit them, children will put out their shoes or boots for Saint Nikolaus to fill with candy. December 24 begins like every other working day, except that by 2 18 HOLIDAY GUIDE 2018

Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve, as that is when The Christ Child was born. The children will not see the Christmas tree before December 24, as it is the Christ Child who will bring it, along with the gifts. It is all a very mysterious and festive occasion. Before unpacking the gifts, the children will sing Christmas songs and recite poems for the adults. The adults and children all dress up in holiday clothes. Supper usually consists of something very light and easy like potato salad and Wiener Würstchen. The family usually goes together to midnight mass, which with all the church bells ringing and the people singing, is very festive. As with most major German holidays, the Christmas celebration lasts not just one day, but also for December 25 and 26. The family gets

ure, we all love to hear Nat’s “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” and Bing’s “White Christmas” during the holiday season, but it also doesn’t hurt to spice up the rotation for upcoming holiday parties and gatherings. Here are 10 lesser-known Christmas albums to buy, download or stream this season that will keep your holiday events hopping!

THE BEACH BOYS CHRISTMAS ALBUM

CHRISTMAS WITH CHET ATKINS

In case you’ve forgotten (or were never aware) what a deft Jazz and Western Swing guitarist Chet was, the tracks on this collection will remind you. The track list is full of familiar titles, but you’ve never heard them quite like this. Standouts are the

slower pieces, like Little Drummer Boy and Blue Christmas — as Atkins’ reading of the latter might be the bluest version ever. WHERE TO FIND IT: AMAZON, SPOTIFY

A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOU FROM PHIL SPECTOR

Spector’s former stable of R&B artists are in fine form on this compilation of early 1960s hit-makers like Darlene Love, The Ronettes and The Crystals. If these tunes, complete with the “wall of sound” treatment Spector was famous for, doesn’t put some holiday pep in your step, you can’t be helped.

CHRISTMAS ON THE RANGE

Chock full of Pedal Steel Guitar and Straight Bass, 1950s Country music was very different (and arguably better) prior to its infusion with modern pop sensibilities. The song ‘Christmas Dinner’ and its line “If you don’t watch out you’re gonna double your size,” will never fail to make you smile.

SPRINGS ENSEMBLE THEATRE

dishes up irreverent ‘potluck’ of plays

A

man loses his dog and enlists his Amazon Alexa to help find it. Mrs. Claus goes to her lawyer, Jack Frost, for a divorce. A sketch entitled “A Very Pinterest Christmas”? Not your typical holiday fare, but all of these scenarios and more will play out four nights a week at the Springs Ensemble Theatre’s Holiday Play Festival to raise funds for their 2019 season, which will be their tenth. “I think it’s like turning the expected Christmas story on its head,” said Executive Producer Sarah Sheppard-Shaver. “We wanted to do a ‘potluck’ of original work, so we looked for playwrights who live and work in this region to submit their work. When we wrote the ad we were looking for nostalgic, inappropriate, wry, sad, funny … whatever the holidays mean to them. Because not everybody is into the nice sugarplum dreams; sometimes the holidays are really rough on people. We wanted to reflect that — what our community feels about the holidays.” Each night will be a series of 10 plays of varying lengths, all by different local playwrights whose work was chosen from the submittals. “Some of the monologues are three minutes, some of the plays are 15 minutes, so we’ll have a mix of all those.” For those who have not attended a SET show previously, it’s possibly the most intimate venue for local theatre, seating only 35 to 50 people for any given show. “You know, I feel like 36 HOLIDAY GUIDE 2018

it’s a really home-y environment. You walk into the lobby, and we always have it decorated … to me it’s like my other home, so I hope it feels that way for our patrons,” said Sheppard-Shaver. Of the performance area she added, “It feels kind of like a living room. There’s almost no distance between you and the performers. You’re right there, like you’re living the scene with them.” Although accommodating 10 plays in one evening sounds like a daunting task with regard to sets, props and costumes, SET has developed a strategy from past productions to keep the festival on track. Sheppard-Shaver said they’ll employ, “A very simple black box set with some festive background decoration. We have two musicians, The Rogue Spirits, and local poet Jonathan Andujar who are going to be involved, doing musical and poetic

interludes. In the past we’ve also had some sexy elves or inappropriate Santas move the props between scenes while the music is playing.” The local playwrights whose work has been selected for this year’s festival include: Travis Duncan, Jeremiah Walter, Sue Bachman, Max Ferguson, Rachel Baker, Jessica Weaver, Cyndi Parr, Gene Kauppila, Lori Isbell and Richard Sebastian-Coleman. As for the price of admission, they’re using a “pay what you can” model with a suggested donation of $20. But, Sheppard-Shaver said, “If you want to have some holiday fun, and just have pocket change or linty dollar bills in your pocket, just come anyway and have a good time with us.” Homemade cookies will be available in the lobby, along with both “naughty” and “nice” egg nog. “I think it’s an alternative to your typical Christmas fare, so if you’re sick of being wholesome and want to be bad for a minute, then just come over and play with our extended SET family for a little bit.” The SET Holiday Play Festival will be performed December 6 – 22 at 1903 E. Cache La Poudre Street. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday performances are at 4:00 p.m. Please note that there is no Sunday performance on December 9. Seating is limited, so reservations are recommended. Visit springsensembletheatre.org for more information.

Additionally, they pride themselves in having a studio that’s a positive learning space so young dancers can thrive, and they bring in the best Guest Teachers from around the country to share their knowledge with their dancers. 38 HOLIDAY GUIDE 2018

There are many unique aspects of

KDA that separate it from other dance

studios. They offer a well-rounded training program for their dancers: Their students are required to study all forms of dance, and KDA considers it their job to prepare dancers for the real world. Their dancers need to be able to do anything asked of them at an audition, as well as in any job or career path they may choose. Kemper believes that the biggest mistakes she sees dancers make, is when they get caught up in “trends” based on what they see on social media and try to emulate them. Jeni loves to see dancers embrace their own gifts and talents — to really take pride in being individuals, rather than imicking other dancers. At KDA , they strive to teach young dancers to have pride in themselves as individuals, and to stand in their own light. Kemper has been sharing her passion for, and knowledge of, dance for over 20 years. Born and raised in Colorado Springs, her training has taken her from coast to coast, where she has danced

with many influential dancers and choreographers. Following her performance career she opened Kemper Dance Academy in June 2010, knowing this was her true calling to the arts. With KDA , she set out to create a dance studio that would be unique to the area and would focus on providing the highest-quality dance training and education to dancers. With a startup company of five and an encouraging support team, the KDA Company began, and the studio quickly started to transform into a nationally recognized establishment. A dream come true! Kemper Dance Academy and Kemper pride themselves on their dance showcases throughout the year. These provide the dancers an opportunity to perform in front of large audiences and gain confidence as they grow as dancers and as individuals. The winter and spring showcases are filled with fun adventures, amazing dancing and great memories for the dancers, parents and audiences alike.

carry on holiday traditions MONUMENT HILL KIWANIS

tarting the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, the TriLakes mountain air will once again fill with the merry sound of Salvation Army bells. Since 1987, the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club has carried on this holiday tradition, and for many of the 150 men and women of the 44-yearold, award-winning service club, this is a favorite annual event. On any given day during the holiday season, a Kiwanis volunteer may be found ringing the bell at a Monument Walmart, Safeway, or King Soopers — cheerfully wishing all a safe and happy holiday season. Club members and supporters donate over 1,000 service hours, often in extreme weather conditions, but always with a heartfelt smile. Assisting The Club each year are students from the District 38 high school Key Clubs and middle school Builders Club. These student-led clubs are part of the Kiwanis program to teach leadership through service. Local Boy Scout troops also participate in this important community outreach project, as do The Discovery Canyon Campus Cheerleaders, employees of King Soopers, local CEOs and other volunteers.

The Tri-Lakes community contributes about 10 percent of the overall Pikes Peak area Red Kettle campaign’s donations. This adds up to well over $40,000 in critical income for needy families and individuals in the region. The Salvation Army puts these funds to work “Doing the Most Good,” providing a 24/7 emergency shelter, nutritional meals and transitional housing. The Salvation Army also uses about 35 percent of Red Kettle funds on programs for children and young people. The Monument Hill Kiwanis Club thanks the community for its generosity and teamwork on behalf of this worthy mission. The North Pole at Tri-Lakes Arts and Crafts Fair is another Monument Hill Kiwanis Club holiday tradition. Begun in 2003, this year’s event

will be held in concert with the Monument Small Town Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 1. Held at Monument’s Grace Best Education Center at 66 N. Jefferson St. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will offer handmade crafts and art objects for purchase, as well as food, featuring Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church’s Cookie Walk. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day by District 38 school choirs and bands, along with other local musical groups. The special musical headliner will be “America’s Got Talent” finalist Miguel Dakota, who will perform at 1 p.m. The Arts and Craft Fair is free of charge. In lieu of admission, donations of non-perishable food items, unwrapped toys or cash are gratefully accepted. All donations will benefit Tri-Lakes Cares, our local family services organization. The Monument Hill Kiwanis Club is a federally designated 501(c)(3), public charity with the mission of “Making a Difference for Youth and Our Community.” The Club meets each Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at “Big Red,” the District 38 Administration Building at 146 N. Jefferson St., in Monument. For more information, visit www.monumenthillkiwanis.org. HOLIDAY GUIDE 2018 41

O

COURTESY OF EMPTY STOCKING FUND

ver the past 34 years, Empty Stocking Fund has been a constant presence in the Pikes Peak region. What started in 1984 as a campaign to provide clothing and toys to needy families during the holiday season has grown into a multi-million-dollar effort with 20 incredible partner agencies. Since 1997 El Pomar Foundation has matched $1 for every $3, up to $200,000. The Bruni Foundation joined Empty Stocking Fund in 2000 with another matching grant, $1 for every $10, up to $70,000. Add Staff, Wells Fargo and The Gazette also support the campaign, making it possible for 100 percent of donations to go directly to partner agencies. Over the past 34 years, the fund has raised more than $20 million. In 2017, the Empty Stocking Fund exceeded its goal to raise $1 million, raising $1,176,984. Hopes are to repeat that during the 2018-19 campaign, in an effort to meet the growing demand for services in our community. Every year ESF agencies touch over 325,000 lives — over 50 percent of the region’s population. This partnership allows ESF to spark the giving spirit of the Pikes Peak region, to benefit local nonprofits serving neighbors in need. Each agency provides unique services to its clients, whether that is rent and utility assistance, shelter and safety, warm meals, health screenings or resource referral. Even a $1 donation can drastically increase the capacity of our partner agencies. With just $1, the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region can give a military family a day of fishing at Camp Shady Brook in Deckers. This trip is a time to put down the electronics and to connect with nature and family. Military personnel cherish this time to strengthen their family bonds. A $20 donation allows Care and Share Food Bank to provide 150 meals to residents of Southern Colorado. An incredibly generous gift of $200 can pay for eight hours of behavioral health services delivered to a child and family in crisis through CPCD … Giving Children a Head Start. Only three of the 20 agencies are highlighted above. The collective impact of ESF and its partner agencies stretches far beyond these metrics by creating a system of care unlike any other. The thirty-fifth annual Empty Stocking Fund campaign begins on Thanksgiving Day. Show your support for our agency partners and help your neighbors in need by donating at www.fillanemptystocking.org.
