GIFTS for NERDS

People with passionate hobbies prove nerd is the new cool

N

BY PATT Y TOMSK Y, THE GA ZETTE

erds are the ultimate cool these days. Seems like everyone identifies with some sort of fandom — whether that’s the Marvel universe or bluegrass mandolin players, chances are you have one of these passionate geeks on your gift list.

COMIC BOOK NERDS

This one’s a no-brainer — get your local Marvel or DC nerd a gift certificate to one of Colorado Springs’ comic book stores. Muse Comics and Games (1338 N. Academy Blvd.) says that the John Hickman X-Men series is very popular now. The Batman Three Jokers is also flying off the shelves because it has

been “teased” for so long — years, in fact. Manager Elisabeth Martin at Muse recommended two independent comic books: Department of Truth, about conspiracy theories people can believe into existence; and Dune House of Atreides, a tie-in to the brand new Dune movie, both of which are expected to be popular this season. All of the stores in town could use your business and the people who work there are also super helpful when it comes to deciding which comic book, graphic novel or Pop figurine will make the perfect gift. I should know — Elisabeth made me feel like I could confidently make a choice for a comic book store gift this year.

Many comic book nerds also enjoy graphic novels. One of the quirkiest of the year, Lucy Sullivan’s Barking, has been lauded as “one of the most memorable graphic novel experiences I’ve taken all year” by Zack Quaintance of comicsbookcase.com. Its themes include modern alienation and depression but the drawings make it feel uplifting somehow. And check out writer/artist Gene Lueng Lang’s Dragon Hoops for the b-ball fan on your list.

GAMING NERDS

There’s not a lot regular people like you and me can teach gaming nerds about their passion — and you can rarely source a gift that they don’t already have. But CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E

calling the many used computer stores around town will often help you source used but lovingly restored computers, iPads and phones for the desktop/handheld gamer on your list. As for gaming consoles and other gadgets for the gamer in your world, check out the pawn shops, too. These games are sometimes in their original packaging and I’m told that all reputable shops must verify their source (don’t worry about being an unwitting fence to stolen merchandise). If you want to buy new video games, visit GameStop (we like the one at 7481 North Academy Blvd.) or Best Buy where the gamers roam as retail associates and can tell you the appropriate gift giving choice for education or excitement. Remember, before gifting your nephew, check to see if he is allowed to receive first person shooter (FPS) games like Call of Duty Cold War — the hot holiday game I’m told ($60) or Payday 2, most of which are only appropriate for adults due to mature content. The new Super Mario legacy pack that includes 3-D, Sunshine and Galaxy for Nintendo Switch is a hotly anticipated all-ages choice ($60, GameStop) to mark Mario’s 35th anniversary.

comes to mind. The former poet laureate is extremely accessible and funny, too (really). Do some amateur sleuthing and find the books your poetry lover already has — trying to source a signed edition for a dog-eared volume says volumes about how much you care. I also found some cool office accessories for people who write poetry — a mug from

POETRY NERDS

The literary community is suffering during the pandemic — in-person readings and book launches have been canceled and some poets’ first collection launches have been put off until late 2021. I realize the poetry aficionado might seem like a slim cohort however, some poets translate well into gifts for run-of-the-mill readers — Billy Collins’ newest, Whale Day and Other Poems ($26 at Poor Richards, 320 N. Tejon St.)

6 2020 HOLIDAY GUIDE

TeeMonsterTees on Etsy ($16.99) that reads “Wow I never dreamed I’d end up being a super cool poet. But here I am killing it!” hits just the right ironic tone.

MUSIC NERDS

Music nerds come in a daunting array of tastes and genres. One of the best gifts is a premium version of iTunes and

Spotify for them — they get to pick the music and you get to be remembered each time they download a track. Personally, I’m a fan of merch. A lot of our favorite pop, rock and hip-hop artists had to cancel summer tours, making us miss the festivals we’d gotten used to attending. Hit up the Meadowgrass website (or any other large festival you’re missing) and check out the artists’ websites from there to see if you can help carry these performers to a time when they can sell merch at concerts again. Of course, the big label folks will have tons of T-shirts and such but if you do a little digging, you can sport your indie-rock local favorite instead, the people who are seriously hurting economically. Maybe you can donate in your friend’s name to a music nonprofit. MusicCares from the Recording Academy offers a “safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need” and receives a five-star rating from the Charity Navigator. There are philharmonics (including the Colorado Springs Philharmonic) who would love to have your support as we all ease slowly into in-person auditoriums, God willing, once again. Or, if your music geek is missing Sunshine Studios Live or another music venue, consider buying them tickets for their favorite show — hosted safely. Call before you go — Sunshine Studios will honor tickets for shows that are rescheduled and provide refunds due to new restrictions that may arise. Your faraway metalhead Mom would probably dig a Sunshine Studios T-shirt, too ($25, various styles) sunshinestudios.com

Teens like staying abreast of the latest technology, and what better way to do so than with hot-off-the-assembly-line products? GAMING

Thank you for voting us

Many teens immerse themselves in gameplay, whether solo or online multiplayer. Games can be enjoyed while using various consoles, computers and even smartphones. Find out which platform teens are using and then purchase gift cards, points or e-codes so that they can get new games or enjoy in-app purchases and upgrades.

SCHOOL FUNDING

Fueled by Knowledge and Passion

When you’re here you’ll feel the love!

Some gifts can focus on the future, including teens’ education. Consider donating to or opening up an account to help fund college costs. Different plans have different annual contribution limits and tax deferments, so it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to figure out which avenue is right for you and your gift recipient.

RETAILER GIFT CARDS

Teenagers always enjoy some extra purchasing power, so gift cards to their favorite retailers are likely to be a hit. If you’re not sure where the teen on your list shops, consider a gift card good for any store in a local mall.

Exciting libations for holiday fun Shake it up — yes we mean cocktails — for your next family gathering BY PATT Y TOMSK Y, THE GA ZETTE

E

ver wonder how you can spruce up your holiday gathering quickly and simply this holiday? Wine, beer and spirits will often create a welcome respite from your classic eggnog (even though we love that!) or provide an off-the-beaten path alternate to white wine with turkey and mash. Suppose Dad’s go-to drink is whiskey and Mom likes a vodka-something. This year forgo the usual suspects — try a Colorado whiskey or scotch with super premium mixers like a fancy ginger beer (for a Moscow mule) or a juice you might not have thought of right off the bat. (Mango martini anyone?) Or take a shine to moonshine. One of our favorite distilleries is 3 Hundred Days of Shine (279 Beacon Lite Road, Monument) which offers a peach cobbler “shine” that’s sweet and smooth but packs a punch. We like to mix it with peach La Croix or tonic water and ginger-peach black tea for a simple, sparkling option for guests. Check out their website for more recipes and visit their tasting room. Call ahead for holiday hours at 719-466-0023.

Cocktails that sparkle for the season

Our friends at Coaltrain (330

W. Uintah St.) are the experts for everything holiday — and these two cocktails will be sure to spice up your annual event, even if it’s only a few of your besties, make a fancier choice for a more festive time all around.

ESPRESSO MARTINI • 2 oz. Irish Cream Liqueur (we recommend Five Farms or Hard Chaw) • 1/2 oz. Vodka (Spring 44 is a great choice) • 1.5 oz. Espresso In a shaker filled with ice, add all the ingredients and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Using zester, shave an espresso bean and sprinkle on top of drink. WINTER WALTZ AFTER DINNER DRINK • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters • 2 oz. Rye Whiskey (we like Rittenhouse) • 1/2 oz. Amaro (such as Cio Ciaro) • 1/4 oz. Allspice Liqueur (Bitter Truth Pimento Dram) Star Anise Place all in a shaker with ice and shake until frosted on outside. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with star anise and enjoy!

Spread holiday cheer with an easy, festive espresso martini that’s bold and bright — and sure to delight.

Don’t worry if you’re a bit overwhelmed by all of the choices for libations this holiday. There’s help available. “We have customers come in during the season to plan their special dinners and celebrations with us — for decades. We’d welcome any questions you might have about making this year’s holiday meals even more special with the right wine, beer or cocktail,” said Coaltrain co-owner Jim Little.

Selling your home during the holidays BY PATT Y TOMSK Y, THE GA ZETTE

B

ecky Gloriod, one the most trusted and successful real estate professionals in the Pike’s Peak region, kindly sat down with us to explain the ins and outs of holiday selling. From staging to cutting the clutter, Gloriod has the tips and tricks you’ll need to “deck your halls” for a fast, easy sale.

Q: A:

Is it smart to sell during the holiday season? We still have people shopping during the holidays, however, many people will take their home off the market during the holidays so they can partake in traditions at home without worry about touring prospective buyers. But that’s why competition decreases — which is a

big plus, especially for homes listed for over a million.

Q: A:

Why do you think people continue to shop for a home during the holidays? Over the years we’ve noticed people have more time during this season — to fly here and tour homes or, if they’re military, many are working with reduced hours. In addition, many will start shopping now to move in the spring.

Q: A:

How should people decorate for the holidays if they’re selling their home? They should remove their everyday decorations and then put up the Christmas decorations. Otherwise it just looks cluttered,

not Christmassy. If you bring four things out to put on the mantle, take four away. Buyers can’t focus on the house if there’s too much competing for their attention.

Q: A:

Should sellers invest in staging and if so, should stagers bring in holiday décor? We often recommend that people take down photos and most of their personal décor and hire a stager — the little pops of color stagers know how to add create a total ambiance you can’t get with a mix-and-match of personal items and staged items. It’s important to note that we often do “soft staging.” Even a holiday flower arrangement can keep a home from feeling so sterile. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E

Stagers know how to create a seasonal ambiance, regardless of the actual season.

Q: A:

How has the real estate market been and what do you think it will do over the holidays? Our lower price ranges have seen a considerable amount of appreciation — and upper price ranges are selling better than they have in years. Homes listed for over a million dollars are seeing more activity because Colorado Springs has been discovered nationwide as a desirable place to live. For the higher end home, there’s not much to choose from — and some of our people who have looked for years are still looking. We are also getting a lot of people from Denver moving down here. In the lower range, sellers are getting full price offers and often more. But for homes of over a million, you usually do negotiate, even in a so-called hot market.

Q: A:

How are Realtors handling open houses these days? We are not seeing as many open houses as before, however, I just did one over near Garden of the Gods — for a cool little house that sold quickly. I had chairs by the front door and had two couples in at a time — one pair to go upstairs and one to go down — plus an associate in the house to monitor that people stayed socially distant. Others had to wait outside. I recommend people make an appointment for private showings if they miss the open house.

24 2020 HOLIDAY GUIDE

What general advice do you have for folks who want to sell now — or really, at any time of the year? I enjoy it when people say I always like your listings – I think it’s because we’re careful to get great photography done. Usually, we achieve this effect only after the homeowners follow some easy tips to get things shipshape for buyers: 1. Get most of your knick-knacks and pictures down. 2. Pictures show up everything that’s “off” in a home. If towels are crooked or there’s too much on a countertop it shows up in photos ten times worse than it is in real life. 3. Move or store furniture. Less furniture makes a room look bigger 4. Clear off kitchen and bathroom counters. 5. The master closet is so important — if you can store any clothing, box up the off season clothes and clear the floor; otherwise it looks like the new owners’ shoes won’t fit. 6. Make sure your plants are flourishing and healthy or put them away; remove any fake greenery — it will date your home. 7. Make sure holiday décor and lighting is tasteful — no blowup reindeer to date the pictures should your listing linger into the spring. In fact, as soon as spring creates a greener look outside, we’ll usually take new photos.

HOW TO HOST

virtual holiday CELEBRATIONS

T

METRO SERV ICES

he 2020 holiday season figures to be vastly different than seasons past. The novel coronavirus COVID-19 has transformed daily life in many ways. The public has become accustomed to wearing masks while shopping, limiting the number of people in public venues and keeping their distance from friends and loved ones. Many events have been reimagined as virtual celebrations because of social distancing protocols. For those with large families or people with inherent risk factors that make them more susceptible to illness, sharing the holidays over video conferencing apps may be the safest way to go.

Pick a bright, festive spot

Set up your tablet, smartphone or computer in a bright area with a festive backdrop. You’ll want others who join the virtual hangout to be able to see you clearly. A Christmas tree or a decorated fireplace in the background can set the scene.

Choose the right conferencing app

Certain programs may work better than others depending on your needs. For example, if everyone has the same operating system platform (iOS or Android), you may be able to use an app inherent to that system, which won’t require a separate download or login. Apps also may be chosen depending on how many people can be invited in, as some set limits. Do your homework and conduct a test run prior to the holidays.

Keep props nearby

If the goal is to open gifts virtually, be sure to

have everyone gathered and gifts nearby so no one is scrambling in and out of view.

Position the camera at eye level

Try to set up the camera so you’re not looking up or down. Practice looking straight into the camera instead of at yourself in the minimized window or even others on the screen. This way you’ll appear engaged.

Use mute when not speaking

Muting yourself (and encouraging others to do the same) when you are not speaking will limit the amount of background noise. As the host, serve as the moderator and encourage everyone to speak one at a time. Choose a visual cue to signal when someone has the floor to speak, such as raising a hand or even showing a festive picture.

Tune into virtual worship

While some places of worship have reopened to some capacity, others may still be offering hybrid services. If your place of worship offers services via YouTube or another video platform, gather around and watch together and participate just as if you were there in person. Better yet, share the link with other family and friends so they can tune in as well.

Share dinner ‘together’

Set up your camera source so it captures the holiday table. All parties gathering virtually can then sit down to the holiday meal as one and enjoy one of the season’s more endearing traditions. 2020 HOLIDAY GUIDE 29

Gift of Giving

O

ur wonderful community has truly stepped up giving during the pandemic and the beginning of an economic recovery we’ve been lucky enough to experience. Some of our friends and neighbors won’t be so lucky — that’s why, now, more than ever, it’s your time to shine with as many volunteer hours and dollars you can spare. Investigate ways to share your good fortune with others this season via our deserving Pikes Peak area philanthropic organizations.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES FOR COLORADO SPRINGS

Not everyone is having a very “happy holiday” and there are people waiting to help. For 37 years, NAMI Colorado Springs has helped people navigate mental illness. The organization provides programs and services directly to people with mental health diagnoses and to their family members, and works to educate providers, law enforcement and the general public. During COVID-19, NAMI Colorado Springs is offering primarily online services; however, it offers in-person classes, groups and presentations whenever circumstances allow.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

If you ever experience a severe mental health crisis, of course you would dial 911 first. Walk-in crisis stabilization is available at AspenPointe (115 S. Parkside Drive) or via the Crisis Stabilization Unit Crisis line at 719-635-7000. To connect with a counselor for free, at any time of day, you can call the Colorado Crisis Services Hotline at 844-493-8255, or text “TALK” to 38255; if needed, counselors there can send out a mobile crisis response team staffed by members of the fire department, police department and AspenPointe. For more specifics about these crisis services, go to coloradocrisisservices.org. NAMI offers peer and family support groups, regardless of any specific mental health diagnosis. You can also call the office at 719-473-8477 for information and referrals. If you would like to donate your time or resources to NAMI, you can connect via namicoloradosprings.org or call the office. Those are also places where you can simply find out more about what NAMI has to offer, and to discover opportunities for enhanced mental wellness and a sense of community when you may need it the most.

Keep recovery going for our community

Now, more than ever, struggling neighbors need your help

S

BY PATT Y TOMSK Y, THE GA ZETTE

ince 1984, the Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) has raised over $22 million dollars to help your neighbors stay in their homes; put food on the table; retrain for a career; find resources for their mental and physical health in the community; plus so much more. The collective impact of the Fund’s donors and its partner agencies can assume many of the burdens that our community faces, especially in light of recent global events that have left many of our neighbors vulnerable to hunger and homelessness, as well as to help assist with children’s and healthcare needs. You can help. 32 2020 HOLIDAY GUIDE

A tradition of compassion

Last year, the ESF raised $1,226,725, the third highest amount ever raised in its 36 years. Now, more than ever, the Fund commits to surpassing all former fundraising records and really stepping up for the community of friends and neighbors who need a temporary handup in these challenging days. “Our partner agencies are on the front lines of helping people in crisis and obtaining self-sufficiency, and for more than 36 years, the collective impact of this campaign has transformed lives. It is through the partnerships we have fostered, from businesses and

foundations to individuals, that we will continue to help these nonprofits keep long term recovery going within our community,” said The Gazette President and Publisher Chris Reen.

See how far your dollar goes

Every dollar donated can grow over 45% through matching funds. Your giving dollars last campaign and in years past have allowed the El Pomar Foundation and The Gazette via ESF to provide these goods and services: $1,000 provides 10,000 lbs. of food for neighbors in need. $500 provides rent or mortgage

EMPTY STOCKING FUND AGENCIES assistance for two households for a month. $250 provides a month of career-readiness workshops, budget counseling, and on-site childcare for a family working to overcome homelessness. $100 provides utilities for a veteran to keep the lights and heat on during the winter months. $25 provides a bag of groceries for a family in need. $10 provides books for a child’s home library — and so many more specific, sustainable opportunities to put your generous giving to work.

Stepping up in challenging times

Many of our community partners have been working under difficult circumstances to engage those in need both virtually and in-person, where possible. These ESF “angels” allow us to reach out and ensure those who require philanthropic services know where they can go, log on, or call to obtain help. The ESF team would especially like to thank The Broadmoor, The Broadmoor World Arena, Almagre, Paul Franco, Summit Catering, Picnic Basket Catering, Fieldhouse Brewing and Signature Homes by Steve Scott as well as many other partner organizations and individuals for stepping up to create these opportunities.

New ESF partner agencies

Two new agencies have joined the Empty Stocking Fund this year: Mt. Carmel Veteran’s Service Center and the National Alliance for Mental Illness of Colorado Springs (NAMI). Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center connects veterans, active duty military and their families with resources in the community to ensure they can obtain transition and wellness services that are sustainable over the long haul for veterans and their families. Chief Operating Officer Bob McLaughlin, a 29-year U.S. Army veteran and a 2016 appointee to the Colorado Department of Veteran Affairs said the team at Mt. Carmel is “grateful to become an Empty Stocking Fund agency.
