FOSSIL BEDS HIT A HOME RUN Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument 15807 County Road 1, Florissant, 748-3253, nps.gov/flfo
Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is famous for its abundant and exceptionally preserved insect and plant fossils found in the mudstones and shales of the Florissant formation. Based on argon radiometric dating, scientists say the formation is Eocene (approximately 34 million years old). The fossils have been preserved because of the interaction of the volcanic ash from the nearbyThirtynine Mile volcanic area, an extinct volcanic area located inTeller and Park counties. Petrified redwood stumps up to 14 feet wide and thousands of detailed fossils of insects and plants reveal the story of a very different, prehistoric Colorado. There is a fee to enter the park, but the National Park Service will offer three more free days this year:Aug. 25 (National Park Service Anniversary); Sept. 28 (National Public Lands Day); and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).

LOCAL SPORTS LEADER SHAPES TELLER’S YOUTH Joe Roskam, Woodland Park High School football coach/athletic director Woodland Park High School, 151 Panther Way, Woodland Park, 686-2067, wpsdk12.org/wphs
Joe Roskam is a Teller County icon. As the head football coach of Woodland Park High School, he is among the most recognizable faces in the community. Football is the highest profile sport at most high schools, and Woodland Park is no exception. It is Roskam’s job to help mold young men into responsible and productive members of the Panthers nation, as well as leading young people in the community. Roskam is also the school’s athletic director, assuming that role last fall on an interim basis and later named the permanent AD. It requires him to spread his time to all sports, something he does well. And Roskam’s Teller County roots are not limited to Woodland Park. In the early 2000s, he was the head football and athletic director at Cripple Creek-Victor High School. Roskam’s wife, Shannon, is a Woodland Park High School graduate.

A breathtaking view of Teller County’s mountainous landscape isn’t the only thing that’ll take your breath away when you sit down for a meal at Fiesta Mexicana. Their home-cooked classics served up with love and care in every bite will do that, too. Fiesta Mexicana is the place to go for a small “rinconcito” (corner) of Mexico, says owners Martin and Patricia Rangel, who opened the restaurant in 2000 with brother-in-law Caesar Camberos. Following the success of their inaugural Woodland Park location, in five years seven Fiesta Mexicana restaurants had been opened and established throughout the southwest, including two in Colorado, while maintaining complete family ownership. Dining | HIDDEN GEMS SLIDE BACK TO THE ‘GOOD OL’ DAYS’ AT THIS STAPLE GATHERING PLACE The Pantry
Micah Redfield Pikes Peak Newspapers Food Writer
6980 Lake St., Green Mountain Falls, 684-9018, thepantryingreenmtnfallsco.com
This is the type of small-town eatery that I always associate with the “good ol’ days.” It’s the place where everyone knows each other because everyone takes their Saturday breakfast here, where the neighborhood cat roams from table to table, looking for ear-scratches. Located far from the growing bustle of larger towns, the Pantry boasts a prime location that boarders Fountain Creek and the idyllic Lake Park. Select a table outside, soak in the Colorado sun and savor the mountain breezes that rock the Ponderosa pines as they give off their vanilla scent. Join the locals in sipping coffee, and order that signature dish, the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. It’s Photo by Micah Redfield gonna be a good weekend.
BURGER, MEET MOUNTAIN BREEZE Shining Mountain Golf Course 100 Shining Mountain Lane, Woodland Park, 687-7587, shiningmountaingolf.com
Located a few miles up Highway 67 from Woodland Park, the Clubhouse at the Shining Mountain Golf Course is an unexpected surprise. With stunning views of greens, both manicured and wild, from either the comfortable lounge with its fireplace and great wooden trusses, or the covered wraparound deck, this clubhouse is all about the views. Nevertheless, I’m impressed by their burger, freshly decked with generous produce and a juicy beef patty. Pair it with a Goat Patch Hazy IPA and you might just forget Photo by Micah Redfield your tee time.

RELAX WITH TRULY TREASURABLE TEAS Colorado Hidden Treasures & Tea House 1079 U.S. 24, Woodland Park, 235-0719, facebook.com/Colorado-Hidden-Treasures-245879096154698
I almost hate to disclose this undiscovered gem for fear of it growing overly popular. As it stands, the storefront location — tucked in amongst a row of strip-mall ubiquity — is as unassuming as possible. The teahouse itself hides behind a double curtain in a backroom, behind the front-of-house novelty shop filled with “hidden treasures.” But the true treasure is the charmingly quaint sitting room stocked full of various self-serve teas. For the cost of an overpriced latte two friends can share a pot of Earl Grey while perched in cushioned armchairs and listening to Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” waft through the air. It’s the epitome of classical relaxation.
CLASSIC AMERICAN BBQ JOINT COMBINES THE AUTHENTIC WITH THE SCRUMPTIOUS Mike’s Corner BBQ 11027 U.S. 24, Divide, 687-7427, facebook.com/mikescornerbbq
Okay, I challenge you to find better barbecue anywhere along Ute Pass, particularly Mike’s pork. Locals and passers-through alike all find this Divide landmark authentically welcoming, with owners Mike and Lisa making everyone feel a part of the family as they regale you with stories — like the time they met Anthony Bourdain. Come on a good Photo courtesy of Mike’s Corner BBQ weather day and enjoy their dog-friendly patio after a full day tromping around Muller State Park or hiking the Crags. Sides are à la carte; just don’t forgo the baked beans or a taste of all their housemade sauces.

The opportunity to explore, roam and revisit the highways, byways and trails of the Pikes Peak region is never lost or taken for granted by my family and I appreciate these roads forged by the UteTribe, mountain men, ranchers and miners. The Gold Belt Scenic Byway encompasses the historic roads ofTeller County, including Phantom Canyon, Shelf Road, High Park Road andTeller County Road One, all linking to Cripple Creek and bringing passengers and supplies to and from the gold mining district. Rocky Mountain Motorsports, located in Florissant at the crossroads ofTeller 1 and U.S. 24, is a great outlet supporting motorcycle and off-road enthusiasts for sales, service, parts, accessories along with clothing and riding gear for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes and motorcycles — including Harley Davidson. Owner Steve Bond comes highly recommended for any mechanical work or maintenance needs on your vehicle or sporting equipment.
TELLER COUNTY’S FULL OF GEMS — LITERALLY Front Range Minerals 631 W. Midland Ave., Woodland Park, 354-8612, frontrangeminerals.com
Traipsing off into National Forest in search of gems and minerals is my way to exercise and rejuvenate.Teller County’s Pikes Peak and Crystal Peak are almost legendary for the abundance of gems and minerals including topaz, smoky quartz, amazonite and gold. Oftentimes, after finding such a beauty, I wonder, “What exactly did I find?” or “What can I do with this piece of treasure?” Front Range Minerals entrepreneurs Isaiah Nickerson and Michael Pierce have established an outlet for rock hounds and jewelry aficionados alike. They feature a wide selection of jewelry and faceted gemstones from various places around the world, including Colorado. Both are self-taught and, according to Isaiah, “always learning.” The store also offers coffees and hot chocolate to sip on while perusing the displays.

Know The Facts About CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Agricultural Hemp: is part of the cannabis plant family and by definition contains less than 0.3% THC. It must be registered, inspected and certified by the respective state program in which it is grown and harvested. (Cannabis plants with higher amounts of THC are classified as marijuana.) CBD: is the abbreviation of Cannabidiol, one of many cannabinoids found predominantly in hemp. CBD is non-psychoactive (does not make you "high") and is considered to be very safe and beneficial. Cannabis: Properly known as cannabis sativa, is the "parent" plant of both marijuana and agricultural hemp, which are two very different plants cultivated and utilized in very different ways. Endocannabinoid System (ECS): The ECS is a biological system that helps regulate homeostasis (balance) in the body. It is composed of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced in the body), enzymes, and cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2) found on cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as the immune system. Full-Spectrum: True full-spectrum hemp oil is made with the whole hemp plant (NOT a CBD isolate or concentrate) and contains high levels of both cannabinoids and the other beneficial phytonutrients, including terpenes (beta-caryophyllene, humulene, and limonene), flavonoids, polyphenols, and others. In contrast, CBD isolate or concentrate has very small amounts of the other phytonutrients. THC: is the abbreviation for Tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive cannabinoid (one that gets you high) found predominantly in marijuana. At Whole In The Wall Herb Shoppe we sell Functional Remedies brand Full Spectrum Hemp Oil because this company starts with the most nutrient-dense hemp plants (600 phytonutrients) on the planet-grown organic on their own farm just east of Pueblo, CO. They use Lipid Infusion+Coconut oil under low pressure and low heat for their extraction method so no harsh chemicals or destroying the benefits through the extraction process. Also, we like the fact that Functional Remedies uses respected independent labs to validate the specifications and nutrient levels of all their products so there’s no bias in testing. Many of our customers have taken this product for Pain Perception, Stress Response, Mood, Cellular Energy, Immune Function, Inflammation, Sleep, Memory, Metabolism, Appetite and Digestion. We currently have a 10% off sale, in the store right now.

QUALITY, FASHION AND SCENERY ON THE WAY Aspen Mine Center 166 E. Bennett Ave., Cripple Creek, 689-3584, aspenminecenter.org
Who knew that the Aspen Mine Center in Cripple Creek had a fashionable boutique inside? I thought the center was a resource for the residents in need, a place that accepts donations.According to Executive DirectorTed Borden, the center often receives “treasures.” Bingo! There’s the inventory – from women’s fashions, purses and jewelry to home décor items – and some surprises. On a spur-of-the-moment jaunt over to the center recently, I bought designer purses and shawls – one with sequins – leggings and scarves. And Borden says the inventory is quality-rated, meticulously washed and cared for.The sales, pegged at $50,000 a year, help fund the organization’s programs, and the drive to Cripple Creek highlights the stupendous scenery inTeller County. Not a bad way to begin and end a shopping excursion.

TREASURES FOR EVERY TASTE SYS Auctions & Sales 110 W. Midland Ave., Woodland Park, 505-2015, sys-auctions-resale.business.site
The merchandise is displayed in artfully-arranged scenes, some Early American orWestern-themed. SYS relies on the designer techniques of the vendors. Owner Nick Pinell rents space to artisans who display their wares in themed vignettes. He describes it as “a vintage market with new and old items,” creditingVictor’s Junque Posse owner Judy Akins for the staging idea. I found the shop fun to browse and get ideas for sprucing up my home.As well, Pinell and his vendors try to tap into various tastes. If you like sweets, there’s the Amish-made candies, including cashew or pecan crunch, brought in from Ohio. Pinell has chosen a spot for his shop that has cachet — in theWoodland Square Vintage Market, a go-to place.

THIS TELLER GEM’LL HELP SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME BTR Interiors 11102 U.S. 24, Divide, 687-4286, btrinteriors.com
If Divide’s the center of the universe, as some bumper stickers proclaim, then BTR Interiors is in the right place. Opened in 2008, BTR — Better than the Rest, says owner Mike Sewell — has a comprehensive selection of tile, cabinetry and flooring. When I inquired about maybe re-doing my kitchen, Sewell gave me the rundown. First, let’s talk budget and take the job in pieces, if the whole thing is off-limits. Sewell’s got two tile and carpet crews each, sub-contractors who’ve worked with him for years. He does the measuring himself. With plenty of styles to choose, along with a consultation in my home, there may be a way to update an old condo. After my visit, I’m thinking Divide might really be the Center of the Universe.

LOOK YOUR WESTERN BEST The Cowhand 200 W. Midland Ave., Woodland Park, 687-9688, bit.ly/2QhzCBG
Rows of magnificent Stetson hats greet the customer at The Cowhand in Woodland Park, distinguishing the business now in its 54th year on the city’s main street. But there’s more. While there may be fewer cowboys and cowgirls around these days,The Cowhand’s selection of boots reflects today’s fashion trends. For instance, I get many compliments on my red cowboy boots — people ask where I got them. And I tell ‘em! In fact, everything I’ve ever bought at The Cowhand gets nods: a long purple dress and a light purple jacket that looks like leather. Oh, and the handkerchief-style skirt appropriate for dress-up occasions. But the best part of The Cowhand is the service by the owners, the second-and-third-generation team of Merry Jo Larsen and Marty McKenna. With their knack for buying what attracts the customer, the store is a kick to browse as inventory includes jewelry, leather belts, shawls, shoes, stylish tops and even leggings! And the Western-designed jackets reflect the store’s attention to detail. “Our Western clothes are made for active lifestyle,” says Larsen.
