exposure, Gayle Gross launched an exhibit by foot. Artist and founder of Reserve Our Gallery in Woodland Park, Gross gives guided monthly art walks on the last Sunday of the month. The walks, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., begin at the gallery and mosey on through downtown with stops to view artists’ works in various businesses. New this year are the strolling minstrels: Ben Pratt, guitar, the Silverwood Flute and guitar duo; Ray DeMers, guitar and mandolin; and Shavano Wyckoff, keyboard. The musicians alternate Sundays. Drivers have been known to slam on the brakes when they see Serrano’s Food Truck parked in front of BierWerks Brewery on Woodland Park’s main street. Pepe Serrano’s truck is back after a two-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions. Of the mouthwatering Mexican foods on the menu, the most popular item is the street tacos, Serrano said. But the choices are tantalizing — especially for people who crave Mexican food. The Chile Con Queso, for instance, is a white creamy cheese dip spices with jalapenos. Or try the Carne Asada, steak marinated in special seasonings and grilled until moist and tender. On a cool early June day, when the temperature topped out at 65 degrees, tourists and residents gathered at picnic tables to enjoy food fresh from the truck. Many picked up a frosty mug of beer from the brewer to accompany it. The food truck serves from 5-8 p.m. Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For those who would rather dine indoors, Serrano’s has a brick-and-mortar restaurant at 1079 E. US 24 in the Safeway plaza in Woodland Park. Serrano’s also offers a catering service.

The shop offers free coffee and water, a TV and a service observation window. Or you can leave your cellphone number and get your steps while walking through the beautiful neighborhood. You can also shop across the street at Mountain Naturals. The shop offers partial and full-service oil changes using premium oils and filters or, if your vehicle needs a special oil they don’t carry, you can bring your own. Other general maintenance services include but aren’t limited to checking and topping off fluids, rotating tires, changing air filters and checking and changing belts and windshield wipers. If it seems like Woodland Park has a lot of coffee shops, the observation is correct. Residents and visitors have their choice of several around town, but there is only one coffee roaster in town. The Coffee Cottage in Gold Hill Square South features Model Citizen coffee roasted by Enrique Camacho, a U.S. Army veteran. According to the Model Citizen website, Camacho started roasting in his garage, having discovered various kinds of beans throughout his military career, with deployments in various countries. Now retired, Camacho roasts his beans at the Coffee Cottage in Woodland Park. He believes coffee unites people due to the universal love of coffee which reflects the various world cultures. In addition to coffees and espressos, the cottage features zebra mochas and lattes, and sells Model Citizen coffees by the pound. The Coffee Cottage launched a food truck last year which is available for events around town.

A landmark business with the legendary white horse on the front, The Cowhand has attracted shoppers from all over the world. A business that carries on the Western tradition, for 57 years The Cowhand has been owned by one family. Today, Merry Jo Larsen and her daughter, Marty McKenna, share responsibilities for the shop on Woodland Park’s main street. Cowboy hats, in various sizes and styles, are the store’s trademark. The hats can be fitted right there in the store. Recently, The Cowhand expanded the hat line to include fedoras and other styles of fashion hats. “We have something for everybody,” Larsen said. Along with the hats, The Cowhand is known for its line of Western boots, in addition to Native American jewelry, antiques, gifts and clothing, including beautiful suede jackets. Active in the community for decades, Larsen is dedicated to preserving the city’s Western heritage.

I found Florissant Mercantile by accident. The building on US 24 opposite of Circle Drive, which leads to the Florissant Public Library (another hidden gem), used to be merely a convenience store that sold sandwiches, and I was hungry. What I found when I stopped wasn’t the typical truck-stop-style store that happened to sell sub sandwiches that I remembered. It was the same place, but it certainly wasn’t the same store – it was a full-fledged, if tiny, grocery store. I must confess, I love small-town grocery stores. You never know what you’re going to find. Also, access to healthy food in rural areas is difficult unless you grow it yourself, not always easy at high altitude. Florissant Gas and Convenience helps fill that gap and has saved me many trips to the larger stores in Divide, Cripple Creek and Woodland Park. It sells fresh produce, milk, eggs, bread, baking supplies, frozen foods and almost anything else you might need in a pinch. It also sells sandwiches.
