e all add the building materials, tangible and intangible, that make our community great. You helped construct this Model City. Now make the most of it. The 16th Annual Best of the Springs magazine will lead you to the best rock band, balloon artist, veggie dish, plumber, hiking trail, cocktail, radio station, accountant and more. On one level, the Best of the Springs is a guide that will help you find the leaders in a particular field. But it’s also a kind of People’s Choice Award, bestowing honors on tremendous achievements of the past year. Who says they’re the best? You do. About 4,000 readers, a major increase from previous years, voted in more than 200 categories.
Our staff experts also put in their two cents in some sections, and, as we did last year, we sought outside experts to give tips in three important areas. Carmichael Training Systems tells us the best places to train, a local artist with Celiac disease suggests where we can find the best gluten-free baked goods and a dad from a family of 13 points us to the best restaurants for big families. This year’s edition has expanded significantly from last year. You’ll notice, for instance, that in most Readers’ Choice categories, we give Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for first, second and third places. This expansion of awards lets us spread the love. We hope you have as much fun reading and using this magazine as we did putting it together.

MODEL CITY WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE MODELS?
OK, we’ll fess up. The images on the cover and at the start of each section may look like tiny models or dioramas for train sets, but they’re actually retouched photos.
We did throw in a few actual models just to mess with you. The effect was first created by photographers using what’s called a tilt-shift lens. It keeps things in the center in sharp focus and those in the foreground and background blurry, creating a miniaturized look. We were inspired to try this effect after seeing Manitou photographer Phil Barnett’s calendar, “Mini Manitou” (minimanitou.com). Barnett, like our photographers, used a digital camera and Photoshop to mimic the tilt-shift look. Why the shrinkage? Well, mostly we just think it looks cool and figured you might like it, too. But we also think it makes a statement about scale — that there are giants among us and they’re the ones we honor with this annual Best of the Springs guide.

Although the year didn’t bring new fine-dining spots to the region, there were plenty of swell ethnic entries, including two crêperies, two sushi bars and the Jamaican-themed pasta place. We went for Rumi’s over those worthy competitors because it introduced an entirely new taste to the Springs — Afghan cuisine — and it did it with such flavorful flourish. We especially like the dishes with pumpkin, spinach and lamb. BeSt OF the SPRINgS I 9

Roasted until the outer leaves are browned, sautéed with butter, wine, garlic, ginger, soy sauce and gochujang — a Korean paste made from red chiles and fermented soybeans aged in an earthen jar — then finished with honey, mixed with wilted radicchio and spooned over polenta. This little west-side taqueria serves hot dogs that raise the lowly dog to a whole other level. He splits and grills the wiener, wraps it in bacon, then serves it with onions so caramelized they have lovely bits of char along the edges, drizzles the whole thing with Mexico’s thinner, lighter sour cream cousin and a fresh tomatillo sauce, and sets it on a bun next to a heap of fries. Oh, yeah.

Who’d have figured that a college-area sandwich shop would serve quesadillas that are better than the Mexican joints? But try their black bean and chicken quesadillas and we think you’ll agree.

When the no-camping ordinance passed, they were there, helping 55 homeless people out of the camps and into shelters in two days. “They’re the best outreach workers we have,” said officer Dan McCormack of the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team.

In a production that would have impressed Stephen Sondheim himself, the brilliant Fine Arts Center cast and top-notch design team worked hand in bloody hand to remind us just how powerful a great musical can be.
As Eugene in the Fine Arts Center’s “Broadway Bound,” the young actor was both the narrator and central character. If his interactions with brother Stanley seemed particularly natural, maybe that’s because Stanley has been played by his real-life brother Oscar. It was born here, in 2006, when New York theater troupe The Civilians came to Colorado College to create a piece about the evangelical community. Before they were done, they’d amassed more than 150 interviews and were face to face with the Ted Haggard scandal at New Life Church. In December, the troupe returned with a version honed by performances at off-Broadway venues and other vaunted locations. It was dynamic, uncomfortable and thoughtprovoking.

In February, UCCS’ Gallery of Contemporary Art took over the space in Plaza of the Rockies inhabited by the Fine Arts Center Modern. “Point A,” the first GOCA 121 exhibition, was quirky and fun with a little taste of sophistication. With any luck, it’s a glimpse of the interesting things to come.
Using the NASA touring exhibition as a foundation, this ambitious show ventured into new territory by mounting the space-related work of local artists including Vance Kirkland, Eric Bransby and Monica Aeillo. The additional programming, which extended to the Bemis School of Art, lectures and a film festival, were fun, engaging and downright daring. “NYC in our own backyard,” wrote one reader.

Before the time change and the lengthening days, you could spot the Quinn running group by the masses of head lamps shining along downtown sidewalks. Beautiful sight. About 1,000 runners — and some of their dogs — gather at 6 p.m. each Tuesday for this 4-year-old, 5K pub crawl. It starts at Jack Quinn Irish Alehouse & Pub, and winds north through Monument Park to Uintah Street before looping back. Runners get to feast on a free appetizer buffet, and if you make it 10 times, you get a free Running Club T-shirt.

Much more than just a day care center, it’s a preschool with a 49-year history. “Where else can your kids enjoy chickens (they’ll cook with the eggs and sell extras to raise funds for the school), an organic garden they tend, crazy art projects (how about making prints by painting a dead fish and putting paper over it — no kidding!), great parent involvement. It’s exactly what a preschool is meant to be!”
OK, so the zoo has been getting more attention lately for its otter escapee than for the zoo itself. But it remains one of the top family attractions in the region, and it’s even better since it installed the Mountaineer Sky Ride and built the Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit.

RESTAURANTS FOR BIG FAMILIES PIZZA HUT AND FARGO’S PIZZA CO.
The ginormous Jeub family doesn’t eat out often, but when it does, value is important. “The most economical way to feed all the kids is pizza. We’re looking for quantity more than quality,” Jeub said. They often go for Pizza Hut because the pizza is filling and coupons make it affordable. But he also has taken most of his clan to Fargo’s and liked the food, atmosphere and the pop served by the pitcher.

PLACES FOR GLUTEN-FREE FOODS
Spear, a local artist, has Celiac disease, which means she must avoid foods with wheat and gluten. She also happens to be a major foodie and doesn’t like to sacrifice taste. So, she’s done plenty of research about where to find the best gluten-free foods.
