How the survey What’s important to workers was conducted WORKPLACE STATEMENTS

BY WAYNE HEILMAN

HOW PIKES PEAK REGION EMPLOYEES RATE THEIR WORKPLACE

My company operates by strong values and ethics. 94%

wayneh@gazette.com

The Gazette partnered with the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce & EDC and DataJoe LLC, a Boulder-based data collection and analysis firm, to determine the top workplaces in the Colorado Springs area. Providing a program to help businesses better serve customers and employees — and recognize excellence — is a logical step for the local business community. The Gazette sought nominations in July and by Aug. 31 received 267 from private, public, nonprofit and government organizations in the Pikes Peak region, nearly twice as much as last year. About 140 rolled out online surveys to their workers through Sept. 7. Nearly 3,600 responses were completed by Sept. 28. Employees were asked to answer 26 questions about organizational health, engagement and leadership plus other areas like worklife balance, training, pay, benefits and corporate social responsibility. They rated their employers with scores ranging from 1-7: a 1 represented “strongly disagree,” 4 was “neutral” and 7 was “strongly agree.” Employees also could write comments on topics such as motivation, referrals of potential employees, retention, leadership, values and ethics, direction and cooperation. Employers were required to have a response rate of at least 40 percent to be honored as a best workplace. Any employer with mostly negative responses was excluded. As a result of the increased participation, 78 employers were honored as best workplaces Employers were grouped into four categories by size — extra large with 299 or more employees; large with 76-299 employees; midsize with 30-75 employees; and small with 10-29 employees (because smaller employers tend to score higher than larger employers). Employers with fewer than 10 workers weren’t eligible for the program. The 78 employers selected as Best Workplaces in Colorado Springs were honored during a Dec. 5 reception at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Colorado Springs. The Best Workplaces program is designed to be an annual free survey and workplace health analysis to identify companies that are creating strong, healthy workplace cultures.

Strong credit union values its employees BY RACHAEL WRIGHT

“We encourage our employees to be a part of the community. We have a volunteer time-off program that encourages our employees to go volunteer for the organization of their choosing.”

Special to The Gazette

Ent Credit Union has added to its growing list of awards and recognitions with Forbes Magazine’s designation as the best credit union in Colorado. And according to Victoria Selfridge, vice president of corporate communication, the credit union’s success comes down to one simple, but important principle — their staff. “We try to find the right person, the right place, at the right time,” says Selfridge. “Forbes is a close second to The Gazette’s designation,” said Matt Gendron, chief engagement officer at Ent, of the credit union’s achievement. “As we move to other communities, we’d like to replicate what we’ve been able to achieve in Colorado Springs. We’d like to be the best credit union in Denver someday … the Rocky Mountain region!” In 1957, Ent Credit Union was chartered to serve the community of Ent Air Force Base. As more military bases were located in the Pikes Peak area, the credit union expanded to meet the needs of Peterson, Schriever (formerly Falcon) and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Bases. After several mergers in the 1980s and others between 2001 and 2008, Ent Credit Union expanded to serve members in Aurora, Firestone, Denver and Pueblo. As of September 2018, Ent Credit Union has more than 330,000 members, $5.4 billion in assets and 32 locations. “We were just awarded by the De-

partment of Natural Services six more counties that we can do business in in the state of Colorado, which effectively takes us up to the Wyoming border,” said Gendron. “In the next 10 years, we will have upwards of 50 locations in Colorado to serve our membership.” The years of mergers have done nothing but strengthen Ent Credit Union, says Gendron. “The employees we acquired, we guaranteed everybody a job. Where there was replication, we offered alternative employment — as far as a different type of job. Whenever a merger has happened, we’ve felt good about the excitement about entering a new market and, more importantly, having a more robust workforce. When you have new people looking at your organization it’s always helpful to us.” According to Sharie Flanagan, senior vice president of human resources, the core tenants of Ent Credit Union have not changed in 60 years of being in business. “Our business as a cooperative financial institution has remained unchanged through all of these years. Our core values are to be member-centric, and we put the member at the heart of everything we do. We also strive to be forward thinking — technology trends and where people are moving and living so we can better serve them.” Selfridge added, “We encourage our employees to be a part of the community. We have a volunteer time-off program that encourages our employees to go volunteer for the organization of their choosing.” Ent’s professional development pro-

gram includes partnering with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, to pay for a 6-month, classroom-based leadership development program for 30 of the credit union’s rising stars. “We’ve partnered with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and thirty of our rising stars in our leadership development program for a six-month classroom experience for selected middle-management and senior management folks to give them leadership perspective from the higher education level,” said Gendron. “We budget significant money annually to support local and statewide organizations. We support Pueblo, Denver and Pikes Peak United Ways. We have several senior management that sit on boards in Colorado Springs: Discover Goodwill, Catholic Charities, Care and Share, Boy Scouts, YMCA, Pikes Peak Workforce,” said Gendron. “You can hardly go to an event in Colorado Springs without somebody from Ent being there. We believe that the communities where we reside, we aren’t there to take, we are there to give back. We are proud to do that on behalf of our membership.” When asked what Ent’s biggest achievement is Selfridge summed it up perfectly: “Having a mission and a purpose that you can feel inspired by, gets you to the office, working with great people, makes it fun to keep coming back, and in turn having an organization that supports you and the things in your community that you are passionate about, is icing on the cake.”

“Our high hope is to exceed expectations with our internal and external customers: whether that be our homeowners, our employees, our lot buyers, our traders.”

THE GAZETTE FILE

A good company culture, commitment BY RACHAEL WRIGHT

Special to The Gazette

Classic Homes is the only home building firm in Colorado Springs to be designated as the best home builder by both the Colorado Business Journal and The Gazette — for ten times to boot. But the company’s success doesn’t come down to one singular idea, said Doug Stimple, Classic Homes’ CEO, but a holistic perspective ingrained in the company culture. “Our high hope is to exceed expectations with our internal and external customers: whether that be our homeowners, our employees, our lot buyers, our traders,” Stimple said. “You achieve that through reflecting genuine care and concern for one another. We take pride in our work. We work hard. We treat folks fairly with respect and dignity and we stress the importance of sound leadership. Collectively that’s the sauce that creates a good company culture, and by definition, a good company.” In an industry where the average ten-

ure of employees is just three years, Classic Homes boasts an average five times that at 15. “It’s a place where people truly feel they are connected and they can be proud of,” Stimple said. “Leadership is about influence and inspiring people. We take our leadership principles seriously: character, duty and respect.” Stewardship of Classic Homes’ resources is at the forefront of Stimple’s mind, not merely the financial stability of the company. “A lot of companies say their employees are their number one asset, but when you look at their implementation processes, you say that couldn’t possibly be true. No one does it perfectly. “We say employees are our number one asset, we mean it and hopefully we have a number of things in place that validate that.” And it isn’t all about perks, though there are many, Stimple qualifies, it’s about making sure that employees know they are valued and appreciated. For the past six years, Classic Homes has closed

Sunday, December 9, 2018

— company-wide — from December 24 through January 1. “We don’t make anyone take vacations. We don’t make people take time off. We pay people during that period. All of us, whether you’re a millennial or in your fifties, we all have aging parents we want to spend time with, kids who live in different cities, or young kids and it’s an incredible time of year to spend with them. We tell our people to enjoy Christmas, to recharge, and come back January 2nd ready to get after it. It’s one of the most appreciated perks we have ever put into place and I don’t see that changing.” Classic Homes is also dedicated to building communities and supporting those communities. Kim Sandoval, director of corporate marketing, after seeing the lack of proper music venues in Colorado Springs, was responsible for stewarding one of the first outdoor concert series at Palmer Village. Stimple says the value of safe family atmospheres can’t be ignored.

Company has found perfect formula

“Our success is because of our employees. We take a hard look when we add staff, that it’s going to be a good fit for that individual, focusing on entrepreneurial spirit, because we’re an employee-owned company.”

BY PHILIP MELLA

Special to The Gazette

Although you may not be familiar with HDR, the architectural, engineering, environmental and construction company, it’s a textbook example of a superbly managed organization that puts its human capital first. It was founded in 1917 by H.H. Henningson as an engineering company in Omaha Nebraska, where its headquarters remains today. Its web site explains that Henningson’s focus “wasn’t on mega projects or global expansion. It was on helping rural Midwest towns adapt to a changing world. He brought power to the plains and water treatment systems where it was needed most.” After a century of deftly managed growth, HDR has about 10,000 employees in 200 offices, primarily in the U.S., but also in Australia, Germany, China, the Middle East and Canada. An informative discussion with Suzanne Casagrande, Senior Marketing Coordinator, Benton Barby, Marketing and Business Analyst and Ed McConnell, Program Manager, provided convincing evidence of the company’s leadership acumen. Indeed, successfully guiding growth in a company that last year celebrated its hundredth anniversary is a challenge that HDR has met through thoughtful leadership that fosters deep employee loyalty. It’s an employ-

ee-owned company that opened its Colorado Springs office in 1957 and has grown to 75 employees. As McConnell explained, “We’re a full-service architectural, engineering, environmental, and construction company. We design and build the communities where we all love to work and live. We’re working for the city of Colorado Springs as one of their supporting contractors.” They also provide planning services for military installations, and work municipalities for infrastructure design. “In Colorado our work maintains the great environment we have and mitigates environmental damage.” Benton passionately described how employee ownership “means we believe in being good corporate citizens. It’s how we respond to our communities, which includes sustainability and being environmental stewards. How we act affects how well we perform, so the little things our employees do add up to big things.” Echoing that commitment, Casagrande said, “It changes the attitude of how you approach projects, being actual owners of our own company. In addition, because we have such a variety of projects, employees can find projects that can enhance their skill set so they can continue to grow professionally.” Dovetailing that thinking McConnell explained, “We encourage employees

Sunday, December 9, 2018

to look at the website to see what we’re involved in around the world, so they know who to talk to about a given project, to see if it may be a good fit on that team.” That kind of self-directed work is a rare corporate culture that employees at HDR truly appreciate. Casagrande is particularly excited about a local project. “I’m especially proud of our participation with the Rocky Mountain Field Institute, a nonprofit, that provides trail and fire restoration. We were able to award them $10,000, and it was dedicated to Waldo Canyon restoration and Pikes Peak, at the Summit House, where our employees planted thousands of Willow trees.” In closing, McConnell returned to the sustaining value their employees bring to the company. “Our success is because of our employees. We take a hard look when we add staff, that it’s going to be a good fit for that individual, focusing on entrepreneurial spirit, because we’re an employee-owned company. They’re hired to do a job, but also to be a part of a large, diverse team, so we strongly promote the individual’s professional goals, which provides a return to the organization.” It’s abundantly evident that HDR has found the optimal corporate formula to deliver strong financial returns while cultivating a culture that incentivizes employees to deliver their best possible performance.

Dentistry has respect for staff, clients BY ELIZABETH EDEN

Special to The Gazette

Dr. Hans Egbert and Dr. Kent Stilson, co-owners of Cordera Family Dentistry, 9235 North Union Blvd. #170, know how to keep their office staff happy: “Snacks: a lot of snacks. We eat together a lot,” said Stilson, laughing. “There is a lot of laughter here,” he added. All joking aside, Egbert and Stilson work hard to make sure their employees feel valued. “We have a number of employees who have been with us for a long time, and we hope to keep them with us,” said Stilson. “We treat our personnel the way we treat our friends and family — with love, respect and trust. We believe employees do their best when they are treated with respect, when they aren’t micromanaged,” added Egbert. The dentists have a similar respect for their patients. “We strive to give our patients a great experience from start to finish. We have transparent billing, make sure we clearly explain insurance benefits and run appointments on time. All these things contribute to Cordera being a positive environment in which to work,” said Egbert.

Office Manager Bobbie Wilson, who has been with Cordera Family Dentistry for the past nine years, agrees: “Before I came here, I worked at another dental office for about six months. There was a very high turnover rate (among the staff ). We just didn’t feel special. At Cordera, the doctors really value us and our families. They make us feel valuable. In turn, we take a lot of pride in what we do and how we do it,” she said. Drs. Stilson and Egbert believe Wilson has helped shape the environment at Cordera. “It’s Bobbie who really deserves the praise and credit,” said Egbert. “She has put some amazing systems in place (in the office). She motivates the other team members to excel. Without her, Cordera wouldn’t be the wonderful place that it is,” he continued. Wilson believes the support of both Stilson and Egbert has enabled her and the rest of the staff to succeed. “They give us clear expectations, which really set us up for success. I am allowed to tailor responsibilities to the strengths of the employees. The staff is given the freedom to work together and fine tune

things. When you feel supported, it’s hard not to succeed,” she explained. “Dr. Egbert and Dr. Stilson are not just bosses, but friends. They have given me a lot of encouragement professionally. We here at Cordera are incredibly lucky to have such great bosses,” Wilson continued. The positive work environment at Cordera Family Dentistry is evident to all those who come through the door. “We have had dental sales representatives tell us that our office is very different from other dental offices, that they can tell the employees here care about one another. Our patients feel it, too. They look forward to coming in. They leave us reviews telling us they feel valued. We love getting those reviews,” Wilson said. Egbert and Stilson are grateful for their clients. “We are lucky to have our dental practice in the middle of a great community of people. Having such great people as clients makes our job easy,” said Egbert. Wilson agreed: “The patients we see at Cordera are genuinely wonderful people. They really become family to us.”

UCCS grows, supports community

NO. 2

BY RACHAEL WRIGHT

Special to The Gazette

At a time when many other universities are stagnant or declining in enrollment, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs has found ways to continue to grow. “It’s a testament to our leadership’s vision and all of the people it takes to implement that vision. It’s definitely something to be proud of,” said Megann Murphy, associate director of event services. Since its founding in 1964, when Gov. John Arthur Love signed legislation allowing the University of Colorado to assume custody of 80 acres of the Cragmor Sanatorium at the cost of only one dollar, UCCS has remained dedicated to its staff of 1,600, its students and the Pikes Peak community. “UCCS is proud to be a valuable contributor to the Colorado Springs community,” said Anja Wynne, chief human resources officer. “The workforce pulls together to share ideas and respects one another’s opinions. I appreciate that as we grow larger, we still maintain our close connections, while also welcoming our new employees to the Mountain Lion community.” “We seek to engage employees and students throughout the community,” said Stephen Cucchiara, director of student activities and community service. Along with a Civic Engagement and Community Service Office that offers opportunities to students in Colorado Springs and voter registration drives, the university also provides time for employees to volunteer in the community without having to take vacation or unpaid leave. “The university values the importance of community involvement, and seeks out innovative and new ways of engaging faculty, staff and students in a beneficial way that supports our surrounding community,” said Cucchiara. Over the last five years, UCCS has pursued avenues to support the growth of its staff; from enrichment programs to workshops and a professional development grant that allows employees to apply for funding to cover costs for conference fees and similar programming. “Supervisors and leadership of departments continue to restructure their budgets to help support staff member development with an emphasis on internal initiatives,” said Cucchiara. “This also includes publishing and presenting at regional and national conferences. I personally have never worked at a university that is focused on helping their employees grow. This, in turn, has increased the retention of

faculty and staff.” In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked UCCS’s online MBA as one of 50 best programs in the nation, and No. 1 in Colorado. “I am pleased to say that the UCCS environment attracts faculty and staff for lifelong careers,” said Wynne. “Each year we recognize employees who have been on campus for five or more years, and it is amazing how many have reached 25 to 30 years of service. We are nationally and locally recognized as one of the best universities to work for, which is helping our recruitment efforts.” To further demonstrate its commitment to the staff of UCCS, the university started offering a paid parental leave program in 2018 for the birth, adoption or fostering of a child. “After researching other Front Range organi-

The Human Resources Department also released a service in conjunction with CU called “Real Help Hotline.” “It helps mitigate some of the life stressors that face faculty and staff from financial issues, relationship challenges, mental health crises and more,” said Cucchiara. In conjunction with its HR programs, senior leadership at UCCS conducted a study to assess the feasibility of implementing university-wide winter closure by December 2019. “This would create a mandated break for all university faculty and staff, something that many businesses and universities do not have,” said Cucchiara.

A unique learning environment

“We begin with the conviction that all human beings can know truth, create beauty and practice goodness.”

BY PHILIP MELLA

Special to The Gazette

As Plato wrote in his Republic, “Knowledge of the good is the ultimate virtue; without it the attainment of other virtues is impossible.” If that metric is the gold standard for education, knowledge of the good at Thomas MacLaren School is deeply embedded in every aspect of its culture. Indeed, its Mission Statement asserts, “We begin with the conviction that all human beings can know truth, create beauty and practice goodness.” Joy Oram, the school’s Director of Community Engagement, whose passion for her school, its students and faculty, is positively contagious, said “Although academics informs our core values, the pursuit of truth, beauty and goodness is our overarching philosophy. We strive to be fully human and fully awake to the world.” Thomas MacLaren was an architect whose work is evident throughout Colorado Springs. As their website states, “Our namesake left the Pikes Peak Region more beautiful than he found it… he embodied learning that weds the arts to the sciences and the needs of a city with the delight of one’s own heart and eye.” Founded in 2009, Oram said “The school has grown from 77 to 823 students, and from 11 to 117 employees,

with 68 percent of faculty having postgraduate degrees. Historically, we’ve had students in grades six through 12, but this is the first school year we’ve had Kindergarten through fifth grade, and it’s so exciting to see the beautiful little children in their uniforms — we’re beyond thrilled.” As part of their educational experience, these impressionable young students are exposed to the teaching methods of Hungarian music teacher Zoltán Kodály. Their website explains, he “taught that music was meant to be enjoyed…that the human voice is the instrument most natural to us all, and that folk music is the musical mother tongue of the child.” Oram noted that, “We celebrate each academic subject equally, and we model a respectful environment which includes confidentiality and the dignity of each student.” That promotes an academic milieu that optimizes learning opportunities and engages students’ instinctive curiosity. Eighth graders are introduced to Faulkner and Dostoyevsky, while 10th graders delve into John Locke and Edmund Burke. As they enter twelfth grade they’re studying Descartes, Rousseau and Hegel. Informing the school’s academic culture is Mortimer Adler’s assertion articulated in The Paideia Proposal, that “It is natural for children to rise to meet

higher expectations; but only if those expectations are made both reasonable and attractive.” Inspiring students to experience the wonders of learning is at the heart of the school’s culture, and Oram said, “Several of our graduate award winners are at Hillsdale College.” She also discussed outreach to the broader Springs community. “We have a special branch to spread our truth, beauty and goodness message, the MacLaren Society, which provides a variety of enriching, free events.” As well, the school features a Socratic seminar, which all high school students attend. It focuses on history, literature, politics and economics, and desks are set in a circle with a teacher as facilitator. The curriculum is further distinguished by using original texts, and there are separate classrooms for high school boys and girls. A wise rule is that the tyranny of cell phones is mitigated because they are checked at the front door. Moreover, while athletics are important, “At MacLaren, the student athlete is first and foremost a student.” It’s at once refreshing and encouraging to see that the light of learning is burning brightly at a school committed to developing young minds by providing a rigorous curriculum coupled with the virtues so necessary to ensuring the full potential of every student — a teacher’s dream.

COMPANY OAKWOOD HOMES

COURTESY OF OAKWOOD HOMES

“We develop integrity in our staff, a passion for their work, and look for those who are deeply peopleoriented, and customerfocused.”

Sharing community while creating a home BY PHILIP MELLA

Special to The Gazette

If one were looking for a distinguished business model in the world of home building Oakwood Homes would be an excellent place to start. Jessica Scott, their marketing manager, describes their unique approach: “We buy the dirt and turn them into communities — we don’t just build neighborhoods.” Indeed, the company’s model belies the notion of the proverbial “developer” who merely subdivides large tracts. Scott described the concept which is “centered on a what we call our Ranch House, which is the activity center. It features community events, campouts, movies, or trick-or-treating activities. The goal is to get all the people to come together and share community life, creating a sense of place. We want people to love where they live.” Founded in 1991 by Pat Hamill and several partners, it’s grown to over 500 employees in Colorado Springs, Denver and Salt Lake City. Two years ago, it transitioned to a publicly held company, joining Clayton Homes, which has led to expanded market share and optimal scale. Another distinguishing characteristic is expressed in their Mission Statement, “We help families build their dreams. Luxury at every level.” Scott is passionate about the company’s goal of

“achieving livable luxury for our customers. We include luxury items in all home levels, including spas and kitchen islands, which are typically only found in expensive homes.” Another core value at Oakwood is their focus on customer retention. “Our goal is to build customers for life. They often return to us to build up or down later in life. We feature different types of homes in different locations within a community, so they can move to one or another seamlessly.” Equally remarkable in this time of exorbitant housing prices are homes that begin in the $200s. That’s welcome news to young families looking to realize their dream of home ownership, which in today’s market seems out of reach to many. In terms of location, Scott explained, “Our master plan community is Banning Lewis Ranch, which is our primary focus. We’re also active in Cumberland Green in the Fountain area.” Since quality of life and affordability are at the top of many buyers’ lists, the Springs has a special allure because U.S. News & World Report placed it in the vanguard of similar-size cities. Indeed, although she reports that growth in Denver is strong, the advantage of the Springs is that people who relocate here “can downsize on price but enjoy a

comparable-size or larger home.” In terms of employee culture, she highlights the value of a highly trained and professional staff. “We develop integrity in our staff, a passion for their work, and look for those who are deeply people-oriented and customer focused.” In addition, Oakwood Homes provides “a variety of educational opportunities, leadership training, Excel classes, and the highly rated learning opportunities at Dale Carnegie. And, when it comes to promotions we first look internally.” These employee programs have resulted in low turnover and highly satisfied customers, which are the hallmarks of a company at the top of its class. In the important area of community outreach, she describes Oakwood’s work to “partner with the Switchbacks, the professional soccer team, and we are actively involved the Housing and Building Association’s neighborhood cleanup programs. In addition, we work with the Chamber of Commerce to identify community needs.” If the past 27 years of steady growth at Oakwood Homes is any indication, the company is on a trajectory to continue its strong performance and well-deserved reputation as a premier home builder and community developer.

StableStrides (formerly Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center) is a unique nonprofit organization. “Our staff connect with people and animals; most nonprofits work with one or the other,” said StableStrides executive director Shannon Mitchell. “The staff here get the opportunity to go spend time with horses during the work week, whether it is for their own mental health therapy, helping out with riding lessons or grooming the animals,” she explained. StableStrides provides alternative, horse-centered therapy to individuals with physical, emotional, psychological and behavioral needs at a reduced cost. “We partner with both Children’s and Memorial hospitals, so we have a lot of kids come in — kids with mobility issues and amputees,” said Office Manager Jenna Miller. “We, the staff, get the opportunity to see what they go through on a daily basis, to watch them on the horses, see them gain strength, courage and confidence — it’s really a beautiful energy partnership,” she added. StableStrides works with many veterans in the Colorado Springs community.

“We offer Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to any individual in need. We found that our enlisted and retired soldiers greatly benefit from these services because they can bond with and find trust in the horse,” said Miller. “StableStrides is working close with Wounded Warrior Project, Mount Carmel, River Deep Alliance, Peterson Air Force Base as well as Fort Carson to provide our soldiers with the care they need to move forward in this world. Our horses give them the stability and trust they look for in making a journey into health and healing,” she continued. Miller believes StableStrides is run in a highly organized and efficient manner. “I have been working since I was 14. I have worked in everything from entry-level jobs to Fortune 500 companies. StableStrides is incredibly well run for a small business. That gives me a lot of peace of mind as an employee,” she said. Mitchell strives to create a supportive workplace for her employees. “I want us to work as a team. I want to give the staff a place where they can voice their concerns, their needs and wants; a place where they can share the things that might be affecting their work.

I feel that really helps employees to thrive,” she said. Mitchell encourages her employees to continue to learn and grow in their careers. “I try to create a continual learning atmosphere (at StableStrides),” she said. “I want my employees to continue to grow professionally, even if that means they grow outside our organization. If one of my employees wants to open her own horse therapy practice someday, I want to give her the tools to do that,” she explained. The employees at StableStrides feel inspired by the difference they make in the lives of those they serve. “We have an amazing team of staff and volunteers here; day in and day out, it’s just the best thing. The work we and the volunteers do and the impact we have on clients is just amazing,” said Operations and Volunteer Program Director Michael Mersman. “The clients and volunteers are some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. COMPANY SCHOOL DISTRICT 11 THE GAZETTE FILE

Area’s largest school district flourishing BY RACHAEL WRIGHT

“The fact that we offer so many different perks, and the way the District takes care of the staff, they know we have a vested interest in them and wanting to ensure they like coming to work.”

Special to The Gazette

Colorado Springs School District 11 may be the oldest and one of the largest school districts in the state, but its dedication to employees and students alike make it anything but a large bureaucracy, and anything but disconnected from the modern community it serves today. D11 encompasses 54 schools consisting of four high schools, five charter schools, nine middle schools, 32 elementary schools and the Roy J. Wasson Academic Campus. When it was formed in 1872, the district’s jurisdiction spanned 21 square miles. Now, with 28,000 students, 3,800 employees, 19,000 volunteers, 4.2 million square feet of facilities and 70 square miles, the task of managing School District 11 is an expansive one. According to Dani Ewen, executive director of human resources, the district’s family atmosphere is the key to its success. In addition to leave programs, benefit packages and competitive salaries, the district also provides its employees with a robust professional development program. “We offer a significant amount of classes to our employees. The classes range from basic computer classes, all the way up to very specific things for teachers regarding their growth and develop-

ment. We run the gamut,” Ewen said. “The fact that we offer so many different perks, and the way the District takes care of the staff, they know we have a vested interest in them and wanting to ensure they like coming to work.” Phoebe Bailey, assistant superintendent of personnel services, and an employee of D11 for 25 years, echoed the opportunities available within the district. “We are a learning district that invests time, energy (and) money into maintaining and ensuring that our employees have a voice in everything we do as a district.” Devra Ashby, public information officer for School District 11, expressed the challenges facing D11. “We are in a unique position in El Paso County; we have 17 schools districts in the Pikes Peak Region, and there is a lot of competition for high-quality staff.” Ashby echoed Ewen, explaining that it was the family atmosphere that makes D11 what it is today. “We have this family atmosphere for our employees. It doesn’t matter what school you’re at or what department you are in, you are just part of the family.” “You run into people who have worked for the district for years and who send their children to the district. You find the loyalty. It’s what you do. You’re a D-11 Person. You’ll always be a D-11 person,” Ashby said.

Sunday, December 9, 2018

In October 2017, School District 11 voters approved a $42 million mill levy override that provided critical funding for building improvements, staff pay increases and six new elementary counselors as a part of its district-wide, social-emotional learning curriculum. Ashby believes the 2017 mill levy override — the first in 17 years — is D11’s finest achievement, regardless of funds. “We were hurting. It doesn’t fix everything, but it breathed a breath of life into our staff. They needed to hear that their community supported them.” Because 80 percent of the district’s voters do not have children in school, senior staff sit on a variety of boards, including the Chamber of Commerce, and partner with local, state and national businesses to increase the effectiveness and visibility of the district. New to the School District is Superintendent Dr. Michael Thomas, formerly of Minneapolis, who has expressed the desire to make D11 the school district of choice for the Pikes Peak region. Because of the size of the district, it straddles the socioeconomic strata, yet the staff remain focused on equity and educating students to the best of their ability regardless of where they come from. “At the end of the day, what we do for the students is always our greatest achievement,” Ewen said.

Davidson Technologies, Inc. (DTI) is a company at the vanguard of defense contractors as well as one that has a compassionate corporate heart and a team of community-minded employees. Founded in 1996, in Huntsville Alabama by Dr. Julian Davidson, it began operations with fewer than ten employees, but has experienced robust growth and today boasts nearly 200. In June, DTI was excited to open offices in Colorado Springs, where they now have 45 employees. The company’s core business lines are missiles, aerospace, intelligence and cyber. A discussion with Mandy Kerce, chief human resources officer and Rick Powers, senior vice president, western operations, confirms that DTI is on the cutting edge as one of the most sophisticated defense technology companies in America. When Dr. Julian Davidson died in 2013 his wife, Dr. Dorothy Davidson, transitioned to chief executive officer, and DTI became a female-owned business. She was diagnosed with cancer in June, but, as Kerce said, “Dr. Davidson remains actively involved in all aspects

of the company, attending to daily work, conducting weekly meetings, and is fully participating in her treatment regimen.” Powers describes their overarching mission as “Solving complex technical problems through innovative and value-added solutions. We support the United States and our allies with a variety of means, and against emerging threats.” Even a cursory understanding of our nation’s defensive needs and the threats it faces demonstrate the seriousness of DTI’s work. “Our corporate culture,” Powers explains, “engenders pride in keeping our nation and allies safe, especially as we see changes in defense postures and threats.” In these times, when corporate loyalty has become somewhat rare, DTI’s focus is on maintaining the vision that informed their founder’s commitment to employees. As Kerce attested, “Our leaders model our values of treating employees as family. After Hurricane Michael, 18 employees were displaced, but their colleagues donated leave so that all of them had 40 hours of leave to help them recover. Others opened their homes to fellow employees, which allowed them to continue working; we’re mission minded.” Moreover, DTI provides comprehensive benefits which Powers said includes funds for employees to pursue advanced degrees. “They can continue working

full-time while working towards those goals. In addition, special certifications are required in this business and we cover the cost of maintaining them, or for employees to move in a different career direction within the company.”

“Our corporate culture engenders pride in keeping our nation and allies safe, especially as we see changes in defense postures and threats.”

With respect to community outreach, in Colorado Springs the company’s female engineers mentor middle school girls interested in STEM, in District 11. At their corporate headquarters in Huntsville, Kids to Love is their foster care program, a branch of which is Davidson Farms, a foster home for girls. As well, DTI is a key sponsor for the American Heart Association, whose annual fundraiser, the Heart Walk, supports the fight against heart disease and stroke. Their Tie the Ribbons program is dedicated to awareness of, and research into, breast and ovarian cancer. The St. Jude Golf Tournament is a fundraiser for Special Olympics. Powers said, “We’ll be developing many of these organizational efforts in Colorado Springs, as well other locations where we don’t have an office but a presence.” Maintaining a strong focus on community involvement while experiencing significant corporate growth is a challenge DTI has clearly risen to, and that commitment shines throughout their entire company. As Kerce affirmed, “We strongly encourage our employees to become involved, and to have a servant’s heart to help others.” That places DTI in the pantheon of enlightened companies that provide superb services to their customers as well as their communities.

The team at AMERGINT Technologies is used to doing incredibly intense work. “We work in the space industry,” said Rob Andzik, president of AMERGINT. The company’s products have been used on the International Space Station, the GPS satellite and on numerous launch systems. “It is really critical work, but there is always an excitement around it: Space is just cool,” Andzik continued. AMERGINT strives to create a relaxed atmosphere at their office in Colorado Springs, one where both employees and customers feel welcomed and at home. “We have a huge kitchen with three coffee makers and lots of snacks. We have an employee gym and showers on-site. We are a dog-friendly office. There are photos on the walls of many of the missions we support and the family events we do throughout the year,” said Andzik. Some of these outside-the-office events include an annual trip to the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch facility, a yearly Colorado Rockies Game and many cook-offs and barbecues. “At AMERGINT, we try to create a family-friendly, fun environment in a high-

We have a management team, but I never feel as if I can’t talk to them. In previous jobs I’ve had, there has been a lot of negativity from management. Nancy Peterson, who works in the finance department, believes AMERGINT does an excellent job keeping the employees happy. “The benefits here are beyond anything I’ve had at previous jobs. Mingo believes her staff at the Network Support Center come to work each day with a unique enthusiasm, fueled in part by the knowledge that their ideas are heard and taken into consideration. “The work we do here is very innovative, very creative. I allow the staff to have input into the leadership process. Our leadership at CEC is very interested in listening to our ideas. They are relational; they don’t talk down to staff but rather empower them. I have the autonomy to create a lot of innovative systems,” she said. Mingo’s staff feel that autonomy as well; “I enjoy the freedom and trust to bring my best self to work every day. I also appreciate the commitment to innovation and spirit of entrepreneurship that mirrors (CEC’s) mission of providing students with an early college education,” said Jennifer Malenkey, Director of Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships. The team at the Network Support Center believe the work they do positively impacts the lives of the students enrolled in CEC. “When I saw the washer and dryer in our Aurora school campus for the students who may not have access to this at home, it brought tears to my eyes. At that moment I realized this is an organization that thinks of education ‘holistically:’ it is truly a place that is supportive of today’s young adult,

with a strong team of individuals backing them from all walks of life. That’s what makes this a great place to work: knowing I’m a small part of someone’s future,” said Deborah Lowder, administrative assistant. “Our team here at the Network Support Center is very diverse; we range in age from about 20 years old to about 70. But we are proof that there is a way for people of diverse backgrounds to

work together when they are united by a common goal,” said Mingo. Mingo strives to ensure every member of her team feels they are an important part of the organization. “I think a workplace is only great when each individual is valued. I believe that every employee should be treated with dignity, value and worth. Every employee is important; no one is ‘only’ anything,” she said.

OAKWOOD HOMES:

Helping families build their dreams Courtesy of Oakwood Homes

OAKWOOD HOMES knows their associates are also their customers, since many of them have chosen to live in an Oakwood Home. Associate Damon Richards said, “Your customer doesn’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” This quote has become the mantra for the Oakwood Homes — Colorado Springs Division. Oakwood Homes helps families build their dreams. To accomplish this goal each day, their Division President, Aric Jones, and their associates are determined to tackle each obstacle with integrity, passion, a ‘people-first’ attitude, customer focus and adaptability. Oakwood Homes aims to build customers for life — an everlasting relationship built on trust, going the extra mile, the value of their products and services, and providing clear and timely communications through each buyer’s stages of life. In the past three years, the Colorado Springs team has more than doubled their number of associates, growing from a team of 16, to 52 associates by the end of 2018. And, growth is anticipated to almost double that in 2019. None of this could have happened without the dedication of their associates. They have a team that is humble, hungry and smart … that strives for the betterment of their company focus. 2018 has brought many successes to the

Oakwood Homes — Colorado Springs Division. They were awarded many Parade of Homes awards this year, ranging from the coveted People’s Choice Award to the Industry Award of Excellence in several categories. The Briarwood Bungalows Collection was really the star of the show, and they are very proud of it. They stand firm that they could not have had so much success without the dedication and hard work from their associates, as well as the strong partnerships they have with their trade partners. It was truly a team effort and a labor of love. In the past year, the Oakwood Homes — Colorado Springs Division has given back thousands of dollars and many labor hours to the local community through a program called ‘Oakwood Homes Gives Back.’ A few of the beneficiaries have been St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Children’s Literacy Center, HBA Cares, Atlas Preparatory School and the Banning Lewis Ranch Academy Foundation, just to name a few. As a division, not only do they build communities, but they want to give back to the region as much as they can. In addition to these philanthropic activities, the Oakwood team enjoys time spent with coworkers, and loves to have fun! This year, a few Sunday, December 9, 2018

|

activities have included a fall tailgate party, billiard competitions, the HBA Chili Cook Off, a Halloween Bash with a scavenger hunt, a Thanksgiving Feast, as well as their yearly company picnic with the Switchbacks. In December, their office team supports their field associates through Field Appreciation Month. Their field team consists of their new home counselors, builders and customer care associates. During this time, their office team prepares all sorts of fun food and treats to take out to team members, helping to lift their spirits during the coldest and busiest time of the year. It’s a fun way for the office associates to let their field team know how much they are appreciated. One of the key factors in building this strong Oakwood team has been finding individuals who are driven in their pursuit of excellence. Referencing the team culture, Jones uses the following analogy: “Each of our associates comes to us with a tool belt, with a variety of tools already on it. We want to utilize those tools, however, we also want to continue adding tools to further grow the individual and grow our company.” To learn more about Oakwood Homes and how to join their team, visit OakwoodHomesCo.com.

Our average employee tenure is approximately 12 years. Such continuity and commitment leads to higher quality and a better experience for each customer,” says Kim Sandoval, Classic Homes’ director of corporate marketing. GLOBE CHARTER SCHOOL: We make magic every day Courtesy of GLOBE Charter School

What separates a good school from a great school? Well, every now and then you create a blend of the right students and teachers … and magic happens. We make magic every day at GLOBE Charter. GLOBE teachers are a special breed who thrive on success, and we see a lot of successes every day. It’s that payoff that makes coming to GLOBE every day so rewarding. To make it as a GLOBE teacher you have to have something special. Our teachers give new meaning to the word “committed” when it comes to our students. Sometimes functioning more like a family than coworkers, the GLOBE staff is always looking for new and exciting ways to engage students and parents, and often volunteer their time to make extracurricular programs fun and successful.

With an eye on class sizes smaller than many other schools, GLOBE teachers can focus less on managing chaos, and more on what they love — teaching! Students get more personal attention and have an opportunity to engage more. The staff meets regularly to evaluate what is working and where they need to pivot to a new approach. GLOBE and its staff make sure students are getting a well-rounded education with programs that include the arts and technology. Their special team teachers collaborate with the classroom teachers to support in-class learning, integrating seamlessly with the curriculum. Students are expected to follow SHELL (Safe, Honorable, Effective, Logical, Lifelong Learner), and teachers hold them accountable for making sure they are

following it on a daily basis. The teachers work together as a team to ensure that students are being held to high academic standards. When you enjoy what you do and where you work, you perform at your best. We strive for that every day at GLOBE Charter School. GLOBE Charter School is located at 3302 Alpine Place in Colorado Springs. For more information, visit them online at www.globecharter.org.
