Employees in the Pikes Peak region choose the best local companies.
THE GAZETTE CONGRATULATES THE 2021 BEST WORKPLACES HONOREES The Gazette has been promoting the Best Workplaces since 2017. The companies showcased in this publication, “make work worth it,” in the eyes of their employees. Each of the businesses has several things in common: They value staff, support them and keep them engaged … particularly during a time of unforeseen and unprecedented change. The aforementioned employees are better judges than anyone of their respective workplaces. Those who voted to share their opinions of their “home away from home” have provided an invaluable service — to their respective companies and to our community at-large. We asked — and they told us — about organizational health, engagement, leadership, work-life balance, training, pay, benefits, corporate social responsibility and, yes, even the COVID-19 pandemic. The fact is, what is important to them is important to their
employers, for it is only with the knowledge gleaned from the survey that the Colorado Springs-area private, public, nonprofit and government entities in the Pikes Peak region can continue to achieve and enhance their businesses. The positive feelings of affection and connectedness that so many employees feel towards the winners are an inspiration. It is gratifying to know our local community is not only a desirable place to live and play, it is also a popular place to work. We feel fortunate to be able to put the spotlight on the best of the best for the fifth consecutive year, giving management the opportunity to become stronger, wiser and more grateful in response to our workplace survey. When these businesses flourish, so, too, does our society. We are all in this together; thank you for celebrating with us.

The Gazette partnered with the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce & EDC and DataJoe LLC, a Boulder-based data collection and analysis firm, to determine the top workplaces in the Colorado Springs area. Providing a program to help businesses better serve customers and employees — and recognize excellence — is a logical step for the local business community. The Gazette sought nominations in late July and by Aug. 31 received 679 for 269 private, public, nonprofit and government organizations in the Pikes Peak region, up more than 20% from last year. Nearly 180 rolled out online surveys to their workers Sept. 10-24, generating nearly 4,000 responses. Employees were asked to answer 27 questions about organizational health, engagement and leadership plus other areas like work-life balance, training, pay, benefits and corporate social responsibility. They rated their employers with scores ranging from 1-7: a 1 represented “strongly disagree,” 4 was “neutral” and 7 was “strongly agree.” Employees also could write comments on topics such as motivation, referrals of potential employees, retention, leadership, values and ethics, direction and cooperation. Employers were required to have a substantial number of responses from employees to be honored as a best workplace. Any employer with mostly negative responses was excluded. As a result of the increased participation, 108 employers were honored as best workplaces Employers were grouped into four categories by size — extra large with 300 or more employees; large with 76-299 employees; midsize with 30-75 employees; and small with 10-29 employees (because smaller employers tend to score higher than larger employers). Employers with fewer than 10 workers were not eligible for the program. The 108 employers selected as Best Workplaces in Colorado Springs were honored during a Dec. 2 virtual event. The Best Workplaces program, now in its fifth year, is designed to be an annual free survey and workplace health analysis to identify companies that are creating strong, healthy workplace cultures.

Matthew South, 32, an enrollment specialist at Rocky Mountain Health Care Services (RMHCS), has been with the nonprofit for four and a half years. He says it is the most rewarding work he has had in health care. It not only provides generous benefits, he said, but the satisfaction of helping elderly clients. “The heartfelt stories are many,” he said. “Just the other day a person told me they wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for us.” RMHCS, which administers the federal and state PACE program, has a mission to keep seniors living independently in the community and to improve their well-being. PACE stands for Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly. It is a Medicare and Medicaid replacement program providing doctors and services. There is a cornucopia of services for the 853 local participants. PACE provides for primary and specialty care doctors, nursing, physical and occupational therapies, vision and dental care, home health care, prescription drugs, delivered meals, an adult day center, emergency care, when needed, and transportation. Those 55 years and older who have been certified by Colorado as needing nursing home level care and live in the
Sunday, December 5, 2021
service area are eligible to apply for this individualized care. PACE uses 13 medical practice providers instead of large groups that have thousands of patients. They hope to open a second day care center soon. During COVID-19, the day center was closed, but other services were available. “I wish my mother would have had that sort of help with my grandparents,” said Summer Galceran, RMHCS marketing and community engagement director. She likes the friendly, family-like atmosphere at work, as well as how passionate everyone is to help clients. “Working here is a blessing,” she said. RMHCS was founded as Homemaker Services, housed in a small office with four employees in Grace Episcopal Church, in 1976. The client list generally has been growing at about 30% a year. Of those, 68% are women and the average age is 73. The ranks of seniors are increasing dramatically, especially with the baby boomers aging, Galceran noted. There are 73 million baby boomers in the United States, and all will be at least 65 by 2030, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The National Alliance for Caregivers points out there is great need for caregiver organizations, but the boomer
generation has not had enough children to care for the increase. Galceran noted that 41% of their staff is over 50, but is impressed that millennial-age workers, (those born between 1980 and 1996) are beginning to be drawn to the hands on health care — selfless not selfish, as that generation has sometimes been painted. Employees who voted RMHCS a best place to work praised the benefit packages, which include such things as choice of health care plans, a progressive time off program, generous pay, a matching 403B savings plan (nonprofit version of 401K); flexible health savings and spending accounts, short-term and long-term disability; education and licensing fee reimbursement, and wellness programs with rewards. There is also an employee assistance program which provides resources and financial assistance. South, the enrollment specialist, agrees with colleagues who said that the work atmosphere is friendly and enthusiastic. He highly praises the year-long leadership boot camp which he is taking. Employees receive coaching to develop their talents, and then individually get to develop and create a unique program that the agency could implement. “Working here gets better and better,” he said.
DRIVEN. FOCUSED. DEDICATED. TEAM. These core values motivate everything we do at Bordner Home Improvement. THANK YOU to our excellent staff of craftsmen and representatives for making Bordner a Great Workplace. Every single person contributes to our success and growth!

When she met the young former prostitute in Cambodia it was “one of those moments when God puts a mirror up to your soul,” Leisle Chung, chief executive officer of Vanguard Skin Specialists, has noted in a biographical sketch. The 17-year-old girl had taken care of her mother and siblings by working in a brothel. She was at a recovery center, rescued from the sex traffic trade. Studying to be a cosmetologist, she shyly asked to brush Chung’s hair. That trip became a defining moment for Chung and her husband Dr. Vinh Chung, a Colorado Springs dermatologist and skin cancer specialist. At that moment they knew why they had worked so hard to build their organization. “We knew our mission was to make a difference in the lives of not only our patients, but also the community and the world,” Leisle Chung said in an interview. Vinh Chung and his parents had fled Vietnam as boat people in 1979 after the end of the Vietnam War. He has a medical degree from Harvard University; the same school where his wife earned an MBA.

“We knew our mission was to make a difference in the lives of not only our patients, but also the community and the world.” — LEISLE CHUNG, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
The couple, who met in Arkansas, moved to Colorado in 2019 because it was so beautiful, Leisle Chung said. When Dr. Chung could not find a position in any clinic, he started his own, with a staff of four and three treatment rooms. Today, Vanguard has 100 employees, and nine dermatology and plastic surgery clinics in Colorado with some in under-served areas. As a result of their trip to Cambodia, in 2012, the Chungs created the Clara Counter. The subsidiary, named after one of their four children, provides retail skin care products in their clinics and online. All profits go to charitable works such as clean water in Rwanda and other areas with World Vision; a Haiti medical clinic in one of the poorest slums and also a maternal health program there; child protection in
Cambodia. They also give to numerous local charities such as CASA, Springs Rescue Mission and others. Staff members see their own work at Vanguard as a philanthropic calling, said Hannah Searcey, who oversees recruiting and has been with Vanguard three years. “When I heard their story of healthcare with a compassionate purpose I knew I had to work there,” Searcey said. Staff members can go on volunteer service trips to Haiti. They have been curtailed during recent unrest there, but she hopes to go eventually. “Those who have done that come back changed,” she said. Searcey likes Vanguard’s emphasis on work and life balance. “I have two children, six and 11 months and there is flexibility that fits into my life.” The benefits are attractive: a choice of several medical plans, a generous 401K match, bonding leave; Care Partners who can address emotional health. Employees like working at Vanguard because jobs are created around people’s passions, Searcey said. There also is a family feel to the organization. “We truly care for one another. Our motto is we never let another team member fail, Searcey said.

Katey Blehm started Colorado Springs Therapy Center in a converted storage room in a friend’s office in 2012. She was working solo, but soon that small space would not work at all. That’s because one day her entrepreneurial light bulb came on while watching her two children, then aged 4 and 2, take swim lessons. She wondered if there would be a benefit to conducting speech therapy in a swimming pool. She took the dive, finding a training program, new at the time, and became one of the pioneers to use aquatic speech therapy. Blehm was amazed by the success. The beauty of the exercises is that water provides pressure to breathe and maintain correct positions, important in not only speech but occupational and physical therapy. The sessions, which use waterproof tools including I-Pads, help children focus, promote relaxation and motivate them to communicate more. It’s entertaining, too. “Blowing bubbles for oral-facial work is just lots of fun,” Blehm said. The aquatic program immediately became popular with parents looking for additional inspiration for their challenged children. Colorado Springs Therapy Center grew from two employees (herself and her mother, who did the bookkeeping)
Sunday, December 5, 2021
to today’s staff of 35. There are offices at two local locations that provide not only speech work but also occupational and physical therapy for children and adults. They use a swim school pool for aquatic therapy. Blehm is considering expanding because facility space will hit maximum soon. Blehm, who has a graduate degree in speech-language pathology, has 27 years in the field. She never dreamed how fulfilling and successful her work would be. The staff includes full-time and part-time employees. Aside from benefits such as health club memberships and generous pay and days off, what keeps them there they say, is that the center is a caring place for both workers and patients. Erica Cyboron, whose job includes credentialing new staff, has been at the center for six years. “It has a small town feel where everyone is comfortable and cares about everyone.” Katie Vera echoes that sentiment. Her son was originally a client. Seeing his progress and always having wanted to work with pediatric patients inspired her to get an occupational therapy assistant degree. After graduation in 2016 she joined the center. She appreciates having flexible hours to have time with her son. Blehm credits the company’s success to an educated, enthusiastic and
caring team that adore their clients. “They have big hearts and are the kindest people,” she said. They are generous, too, often taking meals to those in need and participating in programs like Challenger Baseball for children with disabilities. The center’s therapists use teen volunteers to help out because clients respond to those their own age. In turn, the teen volunteers learn to communicate and become friends with challenged kids in their own schools. Blehm’s family has been part of her business success. Her inspiration for going into this field came from her late grandfather who was deaf. “I saw how he overcame challenges,” she explained. Her husband Doug, who owns his own business, helps with computer technology. Their son and nephews and nieces have also helped. Because of COVID-19, the center has provided therapy by teleteaching. Many kids have thrived because they are tech-savvy and feel comfortable. Her staff’s generosity was on display when they heard that another provider was not versed in teletherapy. “My employees said ‘let’s help them out’ and they did.” Blehm hopes to have regular swim therapy programs in January. Summit Wealth Group navigates the path to a better, secure future BY CAROL MCGRAW
Special to The Gazette
Brand logos are sometimes mere designs. But in the case of Summit Wealth Group, both the name Summit and the logo — a thriving tree — have significant meaning for employees and clients. The company, an independent wealth management firm, was founded by Randy Morris, chief executive officer, in 2002. He chose the name Summit to denote the path upwards to success. The tree logo alludes to the biblical Psalm 1:3, a reference to wisdom as the road to prosperity. Summit’s corporate headquarters are in Colorado Springs. There are a total of 53 employees in seven locations in Colorado, Tennessee, Arizona and Mississippi. They provide independent, customized advice to clients with a financial planning emphasis on such things as investment management, college, taxes, and retirement preparation. The Colorado Springs office has 11 local team members and 650 clients. Carmelle Nemechek, corporate operations director, has been in finance for more than 30 years, the last 12 years

with Summit. Why has she stayed? She enjoys the family atmosphere in the workplace and the stable environment, where most staff have been for at least four years. She points to the many employee benefits: four health plans to choose from, a generous monthly cash bank allowance to assist with benefits, paid group life insurance, employee stock purchase, financial plan benefits, bonus incentives, and professional growth opportunities. She especially likes how the firm builds close relationships with clients. Some families are second and even third generation. Serving the community is also important to the employees, with charitable giving to such groups as Christmas Unlimited, The Never Alone Foundation, Colorado Springs Christian Schools’ Lionheart Foundation. The firm was recognized in 2017 and 2019 as being among the 5,000 fastest growing private firms, by Inc. Magazine. Forbes has also lauded the firm’s work. Nathan Archuleta, senior financial advisor, has 15 years in finance, 10 of those with Summit. He had worked
for a large institution in the past, but it had been the typical impersonal emphasis on only business. “Here, we work as a team. We walk with clients on their life journey,” he said. He likes that there is an emphasis on accountability for staff and clients. “Everyone takes ownership of outcomes.” Archuleta likes that client education is part of Summit’s mission. One program, lifestyle coaching, helps clients find balance in life and make smart decisions. He recalls one woman whose husband died, leaving life insurance, but also confusion on what to do. The team helped her determine what she really wanted and needed, and created a plan that included paying off the house, possibly starting a business and planning for retirement. He and the other employees see their work as “a calling, helping clients reach contentment and the life they want, and to give them the freedom to follow their dreams,” he said. “We believe anyone who is serious about it can take control of their financial freedom,” Archuleta said.

A local healthcare practice management company has become a “hero” with underserved children and their families. Hero Practice Services (HPS), a healthcare practice management provider, exists to deliver high-quality care to children in need. Because of its compassionate dental, vision and orthopedic care services excellence, HPS, for the second year, has captured honors as one of Colorado Springs’ Best Workplaces for 2021. Located at 2221 E Bijou St., Suite 100, HPS seeks to be the leading provider of high-quality and compassionate dental, vision and orthodontic services to underserved children. HPS offers these services all in one location, making it easier for parents to take care of more than their child’s healthcare needs. HPS serves primarily children on state-assisted insurance, and this year launched a rural vision care program in New Mexico. “Doing what is right for the children they serve every single time, consistently putting our efforts toward serving more children in medically-underserved communities is priority one,” said Denise Baker, vice president of People Services. Founded in 2006, HPS has support-

ed offices that have helped more than one million children gain access to the care they need. In particular, HPS supports offices that provide care to underserved communities across the U.S. More than 300 employees serve the Colorado Springs branch, and about 1,100 teammates nationwide. Baker praises employees for the company’s success. “Our employees are committed to our mission … Whatever it is you want to do or be at Hero, we are ready to help our teammates get there. That kind of support and growth, combined with the opportunity to have a positive impact on children’s health, results in fulfilled and happy teammates,” Baker said. This year HPS embraced growth opportunities for its teammates, Baker said. The company cultivated a grassroots mentorship program to develop up-and-coming leaders, reduce burnout, promote professional growth and drive retention. “In addition, we developed and implemented a ‘Careers on Purpose’ initiative that allows our entry-level teammates to own their own professional growth and earn more income by simply improving their skills and abilities in their current job position,” Baker said. “We’ve also learned that adaptation
is required for success. The ‘old’ way or ‘known’ way is not necessarily the way of the future. Our company motto of ‘Best idea wins’ has proven to be true time and time again, and has truly been put into action this past year. Now, more than ever, we need to listen to our people, actively listen and adjust.” Looking ahead, Baker hopes HPS continues to improve the healthcare of more than 2 million kids and employ more than 2,500 Heroes in more than 50 communities nationwide. HPS also wants to build and develop a strong pipeline of Heroes who give back to their communities and positively impact the lives of children it serves. HPS also seeks to be the employer of choice in the Dental Service Organizations/Healthcare space, Baker said. “Being able to take care of children in difficult situations and restore a child’s faith in humanity is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “We dispatched mobile teams to areas where just 3% of children on state-sponsored health insurance had seen an eye doctor in the past year. No one is there to provide care to these kids and we knew we had to do something about that. Developing programs in rural areas of Colorado is next on our list,” Baker said.

Classic Homes believes in always ‘doing the right thing’ BY ROBIN INTEMANN
Special to The Gazette
When Classic Homes employees gather for the annual holiday party in December, 34 awards will be presented to those who have been with the company for at least five years, but several among the group have been on staff for 10 years or more, including two who’ve been there for 30 years. Human Resources Director Amy Grier is marking her 21st year. “I can’t imagine working anywhere else,” she said. “The culture here is of people first.” Classic Homes has 200 employees. Grier said the number increased a little this past year due to demand in the home building industry. When it comes to what makes Classic a best workplace, Grier said it’s difficult to attribute it to just one thing since an emphasis is placed on a work/ life balance. “Everybody here works hard,” she explained, “because the company gives

us so much. We all want to work hard. I think the big picture item that ultimately motivates everyone is knowing we’re helping someone’s dream come true with a new home.” Classic Homes doesn’t just sponsor a holiday party for its employees, the list of fun events is extensive and includes summer cookouts, drive-in movie nights and an annual trip to Mexico. “The vast majority attend the drivein movie, which was something we started during COVID,” Grier said. “Everybody had such a good time we did it again.” She estimates as many as 85% of the employees participated. An equally high number go to Mexico and attend the holiday party at Flying Horse. “There is such cohesiveness between departments. This is a business that relies on a lot of collaboration. It lends itself to good relationships with others outside your own department,” Grier said. “So, when we get together you
know other people and look forward to catching up outside the office. It’s always a lot of fun.” She added that the culture at Classic Homes is different from many places. Beyond putting people first, “It’s a culture of praise by treating us to the very best of things. There is also a do-theright-thing mentality even when it isn’t always the easy thing to do.” The longevity of so many employees is an indicator of low turnover. Grier said, “It makes your job a lot easier when you’ve dealt with the same teammates. You know how to work with them and what to expect.” In addition to the company-wide activities, each department budgets for regular team-building events. Profit-sharing is also among the benefits employees receive. Classic Homes was established in 1989. It has received numerous industry and community awards, including being named a Best Workplace in 2018.

HDR runs an office where ‘smiles are contagious’ BY ROBIN INTEMANN
Special to The Gazette
It may sound like an over-simplification, but there’s a belief by at least one member of upper management at HDR that smiles have a trickle-down effect. “I try to make sure I’m happy every day because I believe if the people at the top are happy everyone else will mimic that,” explained Joe Schwarz, professional engineer and managing principal who runs the Colorado Springs operations. “Smiles are contagious.” The local office has 73 employees who, Schwarz said, work as teams on the company’s various undertakings. “The team focus on the types of projects we do has a lot to do with people enjoying what they do. We work more as a family and rely on each other. They can see they’re helping America and the impact of what they do,” he said. “There really isn’t a reason not to be happy,” Schwarz added.
Sunday, December 5, 2021
COVID-19 necessitated a lot of virtual work with less travel to various project sites, but this didn’t change the approach to the work, Schwarz said. “We still had projects and we still worked as a team.” The annual team-building program did not occur due to COVID-19, but there’s an expectation it will happen again within the next year. Even with the pandemic, though, Schwarz said the number of employees has remained stable. “I’d say in the last two years we had two employees go. That’s one a year out of 70-something. People stay. A lot of that comes from the program leaders in the office.” HDR, which stands for Henningson, Durham Richardson, provides engineering, architecture, environmental, construction and planning services. Founded in Omaha, Neb. in 1917, it is an international company with offices primarily in North
America, boasting more than 10,000 employees. Locally, HDR does work for the federal government, specifically the Department of Defense, by providing military planning, asset management and GIS (geographic information system) services. A smaller segment addresses transportation and water resources concerns. Schwarz has been with HDR for more than seven years following a 30-year career in the military. “I like it here; I think we all like Colorado Springs,” he said. HDR apparently does, too; the company opened its first branch in Colorado Springs in 1975. Schwarz noted HDR is an employee-owned business, which may be another reason attrition is low. “Every employee benefits from what they do,” he said. “We provide shares of stocks every year, so people can reap the rewards of their hard work. This helps make people smile, too”

Women-owned, veteran-founded family business specializes in commercial, residential construction BY ROBIN INTEMANN
Special to The Gazette
Christy Selvig, president and co-owner of Tall Pines Builders, is a thirdgeneration builder. Her background and years in the business have helped establish her commitment not only to her customers but also her employees. “My goal in running Tall Pines as a woman, and I am a general contractor,” she said, “is yes, we do construction, but we are also building relationships.” Tall Pines Builders was formed in 2014 as a spinoff from Selvig’s grandfather’s construction company formed in 1969. Selvig’s son, who is part of Tall Pines, is the fourth generation in the business. The company specializes in commercial and residential projects. said. “We have an amazing team of individuals, no role is beneath anyone, and everyone will do whatever it takes. This is across the board. I love everyone.” Part of the shared attitude is derived from the company’s core values: integrity, quality and customer service. These took the spotlight at an August team-building event. “We had everyone talk about what they look like for them and what they think they look like for our customers. Our core values help us keep our focus.” Team-building is a regular occurrence, with monthly meetings and special activities throughout the year. These include picnics, an Independence Day get-together and a holiday party in December, all of which contribute to a cohesive staff. Selvig added, “I try to watch and gauge how everyone is doing. Sometimes that means having lunch brought in for everyone
or having everyone take off early on a Friday afternoon.” She acknowledged that “What we do isn’t necessarily a fun job, but we work hard to play. The construction business is a very stressful and hard industry. We have to have employees who can put themselves in the shoes of the customers who are living in the midst of chaos. Everyone here is passionate about what they do and serving our customers.” Nonetheless, COVID-19 has had an impact on staffing numbers. Construction was considered an essential business from the beginning. Selvig said, “We have been so busy and business hasn’t slowed down. We have had tremendous growth and at times it’s been hard to find employees.” She admits it takes a certain type to fit the needs of Tall Pines, “We need self-starters, someone who can just jump in and make things happen.”

Culture of caring extends to employees at The Resource Exchange BY ROBIN INTEMANN
Special to The Gazette
The shared commitment of the 275-member staff of The Resource Exchange (TRE) manifests itself in a shared desire to simply assist others. Knowing they work together toward that common goal is what helps make TRE a candidate for best workplace. “The individuals we support in our organization are people who actually seek our help, and this is what drives our staff to do the best they can,” explained Collen Batchelor, CEO of TRE. “Motivation is really what drives our staff. Teaming is a big part of how we operate as an organization when it comes to solving problems.” Batchelor said, “Our teaming environment is one of our biggest assets. We are professionally-based but personally supportive.” This is accomplished through virtual activities such as coffee chats, as well as socially-distanced events including picnics and barbecues.
Sunday, December 5, 2021
“We are trying to support the connections we have with each other,” she said. This then benefits the connections with those TRE serves. The needs of those served have definitely increased because of COVID-19, Batchelor said. “People with disabilities are even more isolated with the challenges of being able to get out and be with other people. With the realm of mental health awareness expanding, the need for support has greatly increased.” Batchelor noted that compassion fatigue is reaching higher and higher levels these days. This is where those in positions of providing aid can be overwhelmed by increased demand for services. “It can feel as if your help isn’t always successful. With this type of work the goal is always to improve things for other people.” Still, just as those receiving assistance have anxieties and fears these days, staff also can be overwhelmed. “Our entire general population is dealing with this,” she added.
TRE provides services to individuals and families facing challenges associated with intellectual and physical disabilities in El Paso, Pueblo, Teller and Park counties. The organization’s two areas of general assistance include early intervention for infants from birth to three years of age; and for children, teens, adults, seniors and their families who need information on what services are available, where and how to access them. In July 2019, TRE assumed Single Entry Point entry responsibilities and now administers all of Colorado’s Medicaid waivers. The nonprofit was incorporated in 1964 when it served 85 children and adults with one full-time coordinator and two bus drivers. Physical, occupational and speech therapists, nutritionists, developmental interventionists, family and individual counselors and service coordinators are among the TRE staff. Today, according to Batchelor, it serves 9,000 people.

For four decades, Bryan Construction (BC) has built a reputation of having fun while providing customer services excellence. Founded in 1995, BC delivers premier construction projects across the Front Range, the western U.S. and abroad. BC does this on schedule while providing superior customer service, uncompromising quality and exceeding expectations, resulting in the company being named one of Colorado Springs’ Best Workplaces for 2021. “BC wants to serve people with integrity, with work we proudly stand behind. We believe in quality work, but also creating the Gold Standard of places to work. Our vision is to provide a thriving community while building great culture and environments for all,” said company President Brian Burns. Committed to customer service excellence, BC has grown to include Bryan International and Bryan Power Generation which expanded its business model into the international and power generation sectors. “This is our approach to relationships with our employees as well as clients, trade partners and suppliers. We want everyone to know they’re part of our team and their contributions are ap-

preciated. We strive to create a work environment that is comfortable, and give everyone the tools they need to perform at a high level,” Burns said. Taking care of clients is the company’s top priority, Burns said. “We own each construction project and stand behind our work. Construction isn’t our clients’ business, it is Bryan’s business and specialty,” Burns said. “Any time we work on a project, whether it is a new school, medical facility or office space, the work is a distraction to our clients’ day-to-day operations. We want them to know we stand side-byside throughout the process and that BC is here to help relieve as much pressure from them as we possibly can.” According to Burns, it isn’t just the services BC provides, but the way in which services are provided. “People can log into our systems and access anything they want to see. Whether project photos from the day, safety reports, cost information or to look at plans, we offer complete transparency for clients which builds trust and confidence in the team,” Burns said. Seeking to be purposeful with the way it provides a service is BC’s most rewarding aspect in serving the community, Burns said. BC tries to partner with community organizations and donate its time, talents and funds to
create an impact and change in society. “One example this year was our donations to the Community Partnership for Childhood Development, where we provided food trucks, school supplies and gifts to the teachers and staff of CPCD,” Burns said. “We wanted to show our appreciation for what CPCD does for our community and make sure their dedicated team knows how much we value what they do day in and day out.” BC boasts about 150 employees and placed approximately $270 million in construction in 2021. Because of this growth, BC will be relocating to a new facility that accommodates its needs, allows for room to grow and provides employees with state-of-the-art facilities. “The new space has numerous areas to collaborate, a training room for continuing education, a ‘Phone Booth’ for people to get out of their open office space. This new office is going to be a great space for the future of BC and the opportunities that lie ahead,” Burns said. He hopes the company in five years will be the largest locally owned general contractor and serve as a model by which others emulate. “Having fun is the cornerstone of our mission and will always be a part of what we do,” Burns said.

Nationally recognized early education program creates happy children, families BY WILLIAM J. DAGENDESH
Special to The Gazette
Connecting with children and their parents to provide quality daycare services is priority one at Young Scholars Academy (YSA). In operation since 1995, YSA offers individual attention, a nationally recognized early childhood education program, and teachers who create happy children and families confident in their child’s experience. For these reasons, YSA has earned a place as one of Colorado Springs’ Best Workplaces for 2021. “Our goal is to connect with children and families. We’re not just another ‘daycare,’ we’re a partner to anyone crazy enough to raise children. Their brains, their development mean that much to us,” said YSA Executive Director Jennifer Winters. According to Winters, YSA’s daycare offers infant, toddler and preschool programs for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Also, 87% of its recent graduates tested past kindergarten standards, she said. Kids who enroll at YSA notice that students are happy and learn better. Also, YSA offers a connection by providing meal trains for families in need, children’s books when a family loses a pet, and donating socks and trees during the holiday season. Its class-

rooms provide children a place where they can explore, discover and enjoy learning through hands on experiences. “YSA seeks to partner with parents to enhance the development and learning of each child. YSA shares love and concerns for family members as it works to build a foundation for their happiness and success,” Winters said. It isn’t the first time YSA was voted as one of the city’s best workplaces as the agency also captured top honors each year since 2018. Winters attributed YSA’s team and their understanding of the company’s daily work routine to its continued success. “It’s not just changing diapers and sweeping floors. It’s being an advocate for them, being someone the kids can come to. We collectively see our impact beyond the day-to day-and that’s why we believe we’re changing lives,” Winters said. According to Assistant Director Jordan Moylan, the COVID-19 pandemic left a huge impact on the services YSA provides. “We’ve pivoted to go beyond what we used to think were ‘normal’ communication practices and excel. (We) recreated our curriculum to ensure kids are safe, but still offer them the developmentally appropriate curriculum they need,” Moylan said. Looking at how the school has progressed this past year, Moylan said
YSA has continued to build on its reputation despite the fact it is not as staffed as in past years. “Throughout all the hardships that have been thrown our way, our core values and roots in the business have not changed. In fact, one could argue that they have changed just for the better. More appreciative of the little things, like being able to smile at one another and stick your tongue out to make a tiny human laugh,” Moylan said. Looking ahead, YSA hopes to attract and interact with more families, Winters said. “We hope to be able to help more families through an expanded space. We don’t consider ourselves (a) large (business), just a humble small business.” Moylan explained that serving families, past, present and future, is the most rewarding aspect of YSA providing an invaluable service to the community. “It’s rewarding to know families from 10 years ago still interact with us. Kids who are now entering middle and high school say they want to come back and work at YSA for their first job. ‘Home’ is what we’re often referred to and I don’t think that can be cherished enough,” Moylan said. Residents concerned with oral care, comfort and affordable prices are leaning about the customer services excellence offered by Espire Dental – Briargate (EDB). That’s because residents know EDB offers a wide range of services, ranging from exams and cleaning to composite fillings and cosmetic dentistry. The company’s dedication to quality patient service has earned them recognition as one of Colorado Springs’ Best Workplaces for 2021. EDB is located at 8610 Explorer Dr., Suite 315 and specializes in stress-free general dentistry from routine cleanings to cavity fillings. EDB uses the best technology available, from laser cavity detection to digital x-rays, to ensure all treatments are efficient and high quality. In short, patient comfort is priority one at EDB. “Patients, always. The soul of our practice is the beauty we make and the confidence we create through incredible smiles. We strive to make each patient’s experience with us incredible, every single time,” said Practice Operations Supervisor Michelle Bowers. “We Espire to transform lives one smile at a time by empowering all of us to be the best version of ourselves. We are Espire Dental. Your smile is our smile.”
Sunday, December 5, 2021
According to Bowers, staff figures heavily in the company’s success. In operation for 39 years, EDB is a small, growing dental organization with 10 employees serving the Briargate office. “Our office is like a close family. We have all been in dentistry for years and work like a well-oiled machine,” Bowers said. Upon check-in, EDB offers a beverage station and a warm smile. While patients are being treated, they can wrap themselves in a blanket and watch Netflix using noise canceling headphones while resting their head on a memory foam pillow. “We even have hand paraffin treatments, so you feel like you are at the spa! At the end of each experience, patients leave with freshly baked cookies and a protein drink,” Bowers said. EDB employs highly-trained hygienists, dental assistants and an administrative team to care for patients, Bowers said. Everyone has been trained on everything from bite issues and systemic health, as it relates to a patients’ overall health, to leadership and customer service. Soon after the arrival of COVID-19, EDB was limited to only seeing patients for emergency treatment. Now, it sees all patients for preventive, cosmetic, and emergency care with standardized protocols and safety standards, including
increased Personal Protective Equipment thorough sterilization procedures. Additionally, the team also has been trained on the latest COVID-19 safety processes and many team members also were part of crafting Colorado’s state guidelines. Since re-opening, it has been safely and successfully treating patients. “It is so rewarding to help people get out of pain. It is equally rewarding to give people their confidence back to smile! All of our whitening proceeds go to charity to support local and national organizations. This month, our proceeds are going to Freedom Service Dogs of America,” Bowers said. Proceeds from any teeth whitening service at EDB is granted to deserving local charities and funds humanitarian aid. Since 2010, EDB has given more than $200,000 to local charities and has traveled internationally as a team to provide dental care to those in need. “Whether coming in for a routine cleaning, cosmetic dentistry like veneers and teeth whitening, or crowns or dental implants, we have you covered. Along with our team’s exceptional workmanship, you’ll enjoy state of the art technology that creates fast, effective and often pain-free treatments. Your comfort and satisfaction are our top priority,” Bowers said.

BRIGHT FUTURES PSYCHIATRY
A smart, shining, ‘can-do’ staff is the key to our success SPONSORED FEATURE
Bright Futures Psychiatry’s main office is nestled in Southern Colorado Springs. We established our practice in August 2018 with the goal of bringing much needed, modern psychiatric and therapy services to Colorado. “I want anyone seeking care to get service, regardless of where they are in Colorado,” said CEO Erin Recinos. “We set our foundation with telemedicine in mind while also establishing a physical location in Colorado Springs. This ‘can do’ attitude is what our culture thrives on and is the reason our staff are proud to work here.” Staff have commented that it feels good to tell someone looking for services “Yes, we can get you in this week.” In 2021 we will have established more than 2,100 Coloradans with over 14,500 psychiatric visits delivered, most of which were delivered via telemedicine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We know that our team is second to none, from the front office to clinical assistants, billing and a variety of providers; they are key to our success.
We are dedicated to the staff who make our day-to-day operations work, supplying them with the latest software so they can do their jobs efficiently (and with as little stress as possible) and allowing them the flexibility to use their judgement and color “outside the lines,” as needed. We compensate our employees significantly higher across the board and offer most of the perks of much larger organizations. Of particular interest to our staff is that we do not just offer traditional psychiatric services, but also offer cutting-edge care that is not found at most practices. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation ( TMS), Spravato, and IM-Ketamine are additional tools that our providers use on a regular basis when traditional medications simply do not work well. Simply put, “ WE LOVE OUR STAFF! ”
