EMPLOYEES IN THE PIKES PEAK REGION CHOOSE
THE BEST LOCAL COMPANIES Celebrating excellence in corporate culture, training, development, pay, benefits & ethics
Seventh Annual Edition • Sunday, December 10, 2023
HATS OFF TO THE 2023 BEST WORKPLACE HONOREES! I am always happy to give credit where credit is due, and delighted to share a hearty “Congratulations!” to the private, public, nonprofit and government entities in the Pikes Peak region named among the Best Workplaces of 2023. The award-winners share many things in common: clear missions, strong leadership and eyes ever-on success — of their people and their businesses. Yes, these organizations put people first, supporting — and engaging — their employees at every turn. They understand that happiness drives productivity … and strong businesses contribute to strong communities. These employers have set the standard for great company culture.
They care about — and were judged on — organizational health, engagement, leadership, work-life balance, training, pay, benefits, and corporate social responsibility. Their employees shared their innermost thoughts and feelings with us, confident in their position as an integral part of each business’ strength. As always, it was wonderful to learn about the teamwork, trust and respect exhibited in our local business community. “Best Workplaces” has been part of the Colorado Springs fabric since 2017; what a wonderful community we weave, whether at home, at work or at play. Thank you for being a part of our awards.

How the survey was conducted BY WAYNE HEILMAN
Special to The Gazette
The Gazette partnered with the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce & EDC and DataJoe LLC, a Boulder-based data collection and analysis firm, to determine the top workplaces in the Colorado Springs area. Providing a program to better serve customers and employees — and recognize excellence — is a logical step for the local business community. The Gazette sought nominations in June and by Aug. 1 received over 225 nominations from private, public and nonprofit and government organizations in the Pikes Peak region. Nearly 160 rolled out online surveys to their workers, generating nearly 4,000 responses.
Employees were asked to answer 27 questions about organizational health, engagement and leadership plus other areas like work-life balance, training, pay, benefits and corporate social responsibility. They rate their employers with scores ranging from 1-7; a 1 represented “strongly disagree,” 4 was “neutral” and 7 was “strongly agree.” Employees also could write comments on such topics as motivation, referrals of potential employees, retention, leadership, values and ethics, direction and cooperation. Employers were required to have a substantial number of responses from employees to be honored as a best workplace. Any employer with mostly negative responses was
excluded. Based on participation this year, 99 employers were honored as best workplaces. Employers were grouped into four categories by size — extra large with 300 or more employees, large with 76-299 employees, medium with 30-75 employees and small with 10-29 employees (because smaller employers tend to score higher than larger employers). The 99 employers selected as Best Workplaces in Colorado Springs were honored Dec. 7 during a gala at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel. The Best Workplaces program, now in its seventh year, is designed to be an annual free survey and workplace health analysis to identify companies that are creating strong, healthy workplace cultures.

There is no limit for me in where I could go with Parsons! — PARSONS EMPLOYEE, BEST WORKPLACES SURVEY
Technology firm making a difference BY WAYNE HEILMAN
Special to The Gazette
SCAN TO SEE VIDEO
Parsons started participating in The Gazette’s Best Workplaces program this year but proved to be a quick study — the Virginiabased defense, intelligence and infrastructure conglomerate was named the top extra-large employer (those with 300 or more employees) on its first attempt. The company employs nearly 500 people in Colorado Springs, mostly from acquiring Braxton Science & Technology Group in 2020 for $300 million and Polaris Alpha for $489 million in 2018. Parsons employees in Colorado Springs work in software development, systems engineering, cybersecurity, space operations and ground systems development, and are spread among locations in downtown, the Catalyst Campus and the Colorado Springs Tech Center. Parsons continues to add to its defense contracting, aerospace and cybersecurity operations through acquisitions, spending more than $850 million during the past two years to buy defense contractors Sealing Technologies and Xator, cybersecurity providers IPKeys and BlackHorse Solutions and space contractor Echo Ridge. Xator is based in New Jersey, while the other four companies are based in the Washington, D.C., area. Three recent contract wins are expected to drive growth in Parsons’s Colorado Springs operations during the next few years:
12 | THE GAZETTE | Sunday, December 10, 2023
• Parsons won a $16 million contract in October 2022 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide engineering services, information technology functionality and flight operations support to operate the agency’s Polar Operational Environmental Satellite network. • The Defense Advanced Projects Agency selected Parsons in December 2021 for an $11 million contract to plan, standup and demonstrate a prototype ground operations center for the agency’s Blackjack surveillance satellite network in lowearth orbit. • Space Force awarded Parsons a $185 million task order to provide information technology engineering, space expertise, software development, scientific analysis and data analytics to develop, maintain, operate and enhance its space situational awareness software. The Colorado Springs operation also will play a key role in a new five-year single-award contract awarded earlier this year by the General Services Administration with a potential value of $1.2 billion. The contract supports the Department of Defense and the intelligence “community” in delivering global quick reaction capabilities using advanced technology. Parsons attracts employees not just for the pay and benefits — jobs in the aerospace industry routinely have annual salaries of more than
$100,000 — but also because “we feel like we are making a difference for the warfighter. People who work for us are incredibly smart and think outside the box, asking hard questions to make things better,” said Hedi Wright, vice president of strategic national solutions for Parsons in Colorado Springs. The company focuses much of recruiting on military personnel who are transitioning out the service and also new graduates from local universities and colleges across the state. Parsons participates in the Department of Defense SkillBridge program, which places those who will be transitioning out of the military within six months into an unpaid internship in many industries with a goal of the intern getting a job offer at the end of the internship. Chuck McGregor, vice president of military and veterans affairs for Parsons, said the company has hired 58 people through the SkillBridge program since joining the program in 2020 with a growing number of participants each year. Parsons also supports members of the National Guard and Reserves by offering them unlimited leave while they are activated, up to three weeks of leave after deployment and paying deployed employees their full salary. Ralph Parsons started the company in 1944 to initially provide engineering services to the oil drilling industry and four years later the firm helped design the Point Magu missile development and testing facility in California.

The Cutting Edge, Realtors’ (TCER) motto, “We are stronger together,” rings true as much now as when the agency opened in 2016. Five staff members, and 140 real estate agents, who are independent contractors, benefit from an environment in a supportive and dynamic culture. TCER provides unsurpassed real estate services to Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas. The goal is to make buying and selling a house as professional and low-stress as possible. Currently, there is only one office, as management has embraced the concept that agents prefer the synergy of all working together under one roof. “We are a place where agents can be themselves, be authentic, and have a place to grow,” said Partner Amy Kunce-Martinez. “We all came from a place where we had great mentors, and we want to give this back in return. We do a lot of education and training agents so they aren’t out there floundering and just winging it.” Emphasis is placed on allowing agents to be themselves, be comfortable with their personal working style, and grow the way they want to grow. “We support their vision of what success is to them,” maintains Kunce-Martinez. “We meet them where their goals are.”
14 | THE GAZETTE | Sunday, December 10, 2023
TCER provides a supportive environment for a wide range of lifestyle choices including earning potential, flexibility, ways of seeking referrals, and mentoring. Agents are encouraged to teach classes to fellow agents, share their personal skills and enhance public speaking expertise. As Kunce-Martinez puts it: “You can teach an old dog new tricks.” Real estate agent Brian Coram, is enthusiastic about being a part of TCER. “Working at The Cutting Edge, Realtors is like sharing an office space with all of your best friends. The staff is always inviting and uplifting, and everyone is always ready and willing to assist with questions and concerns or provide support. I’ve been with a few offices and The Cutting Edge, Realtors is the one I’m most proud to call home.” The six partners of TCER note that real estate is a stressful business, and employees deserve to have some fun. Events such as family barbecues, ice cream socials, ski days and poker nights serve to not only develop camaraderie, but to fuel a community of support and collaboration. Annual events are held locally and nearby providing national speakers, and a venue for networking, learning and sharing. An upcoming company retreat is set to prepare agents for developing
changes in the industry and the market. Plans are to provide classes from outside experts, coaching on personal and national levels, and information about how to experience a down market. Most agents have not been through a similar situation, and will greatly benefit from the support and advice of those who have survived this type of economy. One of the partners is a financial planner who offers TCER agents suggestions for managing their finances on a personal level. With projected changes in the real estate market, this advice will be invaluable. Team members are encouraged to serve the community through participating in food drives and volunteering to assist nonprofits. “The dynamic environment, collaborative teams, and opportunities for personal and professional growth make every day a rewarding experience,” said agent, Jessy Velez-Delacruz. “I am grateful to be part of an organization that values its employees and fosters a culture of innovation and creativity, allowing every single one of us that works there to thrive … Every day I’m personally inspired by the support of our broker owners and partners to challenge myself and grow.”

ExoAnalytic Solutions, a globally recognized leader in Space Domain Awareness data, is not only about products and services that help protect and defend space. The company values its employees and work culture as noted on the firm’s website, regarding the leadership team: “They are focused on building a winning culture, driving technical excellence through teamwork, and strengthening customer partnerships while pursuing breakthrough innovation.” This year, it was voted Best Workplace for Working Parents based on its family-friendly policies and practices. Employees, known as ExoNauts, shared why they consider the company a Best Workplace. Rebecca Kent has been with the company for two-and-a-half years. Seeing your work do something is such an important thing.” Newcomer Jamie Cline has only been on board for two months, and stated,” As a new employee at ExoAnalytic I can say without a doubt I have never been more excited to come to work as I have been since starting here. The culture, my coworkers, and senior leadership are without a doubt the best I have ever worked with.” Based in Foothill Ranch, Calif., ExoAnalytic has had a presence in Colorado Springs since 2015 and has 35 employees. The office is led by Rhett Butler, vice president of the National Security Space Sector and division manager. Michael Cook, an Exonaut for the past two years, wrote, “Not only is it a great place to work that’s making an impact in the defense industry, but every day I show up I work with friends and family. We talk, we laugh, we share and we make a difference.”
The Exonauts celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, and even dress up for skits during weekly company-wide video conference calls. Their culture of teamwork and camaraderie is unsurpassed. Mandie Edwards who has been an Exonaut for a little more than five years, wrote, “This is a place where your coworkers become your family and it is an amazing place to be every day. Our COS Team is exceptional! I love working at Exo, they truly care about you as a person and don’t make you feel like a number. I have never worked somewhere where the company shows their appreciation for you by paying for a trip for the whole company and their families to go to Hawaii. Exo is incredible!” Wendy Waters added, “Exo offers its employees an environment that truly feels like family. Yes, we work hard, but we also take time to laugh and enjoy friendships. I know that when I come to work, I am walking into a supportive environment that allows me to contribute as a valued team member. I am so very thankful to be an ExoNaut!”

Before founding his own business, Michael Pappas spent years working for a custom homebuilder who gave him a deep appreciation for attention to detail and quality. Fast forward to today, Alpine Contracting has been a recipient of multiple awards, including “Best Workplace” and “Best of the Springs.” “One of my primary objectives as the company began to grow was to form a culture that was rich in morals, ethics and values,” Pappas said. “I have always been unwavering in my commitment to ensure every team member shares these same core principles. As a result, our workplace has a vibrant, enjoyable atmosphere where each individual is eager to collaborate and support each other. The environment … is that of a closeknit family.” Alpine Contracting maintains ten in-house staff and over 50 trade partners who are some of the best craftsmen in their respective fields. Pappas pays close attention to every employee and takes great pride in witnessing their personal growth. Most of Alpine Contracting’s current in-house team members worked for

the company as trade partners and transitioned into the organization. Pappas credits the family culture, where employees genuinely look forward to coming to work, as the reason for the business’s success. From lunches together with the office staff, to vacation pay, and the company’s matching IRA program, Pappas has ensured that every employee knows they are a valued member of the family. “Our whole thing here is culture and family,” Pappas said. “We spend more time with each other than we do with anyone else, and we would take our shirts off our backs to help one another any day of the week. That said: it shows. It shows here and it shows with our clients.” To turn homeowners’ dreams into realities and to work with each client according to their individual needs takes a strong leadership team, and Pappas believes he has achieved that. “Delivering on promises, maintaining open lines of communication, and exceeding expectations is what allows us to grow year after year,” Pappas said. A signification portion of Alpine Contracting’s jobs are fixing problems other companies leave behind. The company’s trade partners are assured
of year-round work and a guaranteed paycheck every week. “This is not the case in much of the construction industry,” Pappas said. “Here at Alpine Contracting, our trade partners are guaranteed to get paid. They don’t have to worry about being treated right.” The company has grown significantly, Pappas said, and it is the source of his greatest pride, but none of it would have been possible without the people around him. “The culture we have cultivated and the family atmosphere we have at the office has instilled a sense of pride in everyone,” Pappas said. “It’s reflected in the quality of our work and our clients recognize it. It has become part of our identity and what we have evolved into.” The culture of respect and family is extended beyond the bounds of Alpine Contracting’s walls and into the wider community, aligning with local nonprofits, charities and community youth organizations. “We are able to make an impact and support local causes at the same time,” Pappas said. “On the youth side, I think it’s important to help with funds for sports, helping young people grow and learn how to work together as a team and individually.”

Nonprofit serves and inspires BY WAYNE HEILMAN
Special to The Gazette
If there was a hall of fame in The Gazette’s Best Workplaces program, The Resource Exchange would be in it — the Colorado Springs nonprofit has been honored six consecutive years by the program, including four times in the top three extra large employers, including first place last year. The organization employs more than 400 to support more than 9,000 residents of El Paso, Park and Teller counties with intellectual and physical disabilities. Physical, occupational and speech therapists, nutritionists, developmental interventionists, family and individual counselors and service coordinators provide services such as early intervention for children up to three years old, and information for older children, teens, adults seniors and their families on about available services and how to access them. The Resource Exchange will expand March 1, 2024 into Pueblo County, adding about 4,000 clients, replacing Colorado Blue Sky and the Pueblo County Department of Human Services as the contractor for the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing. The nonprofit will need to hire about 75 employees and up to 100 service providers to support the long-term care needs of its Pueblo clients, Resource Exchange CEO Colleen Batchelor said.
20 | THE GAZETTE | Sunday, December 10, 2023
“We will be providing case management for people with long-term care needs and will be connecting them with services in the community,” Batchelor said. “Pueblo is very different from the Colorado Springs area, so the challenge is hiring the workforce that meets the needs of Pueblo. We will need to provide residential and employment support and connections in the community to help those clients gain access to services they need.” Much of the work done by staff focuses on coordinating care for clients, including long-term care, residential and employment support, activities and transportation, and other help getting out in the community. All services are funded by Medicaid — The Resource Exchange administers all waivers for the federalstate program — and are designed to help disabled persons remain with their families and in the community. Batchelor said applicants want to work for The Resource Exchange not because of pay or benefits, but instead are drawn by clients and teamwork among their coworkers to meet the needs of those they serve. While pay has not kept up with inflation, benefits are comparable with many major employers, including health, dental and vision coverage, matching for employee contributions to a retirement account, flexible scheduling and a generous paid time off policy.
The Resource Exchange puts a lot of resources into reinforcing its workplace culture, including a weekly email Batchelor sends to all staff members that reinforces the organization’s mission of advocating for independence and inclusion and its values of putting clients first, having a collaborative spirit and holding themselves accountable. The agency also started a monthly leadership development program called “LevelUp” — with about 15 participants — to ready them for management roles. “People come to work here because they care about others. They have a passion of wanting to improve the lives of those we serve and that comes across in (employee) engagement and staff morale,” Batchelor said. The nonprofit recently sponsored a showing of the documentary “Unseen,” about a family with eight children, including one with profound disabilities. The showing was designed to help Resource Exchange staff better understand the challenges caregivers face in supporting people with long-term care needs. The Resource Exchange was started in 1964 and four years later was serving 85 children and adults with a $75,000 annual budget that supported a full-time coordinator, a secretary and two bus drivers. The nonprofit has grown to an annual budget of more than $25 million.

Every team member at Vanguard Skin Specialists embraces the inherent message of its mission statement: “to make a positive impact on our patients, our community, and our world.” Members of the team genuinely care about their patients from start to finish, love what they do and where they work. A visit to Vanguard reveals the staff’s sense of purpose and professionalism. The pride and dedication attached to being part of the Vanguard team is summed up by Adeline Howell, referral coordinator. “When a large group of like-minded people come together with the same passions, values and goals, it’s not really work. You are just living your purpose. Hard to get a better job than that!” Vanguard provides advanced services in comprehensive dermatology, plastic surgery reconstruction, cosmetic surgery, dermatopathology, and aesthetics in the southern Colorado area. There are eight offices with plans to open a ninth location in Colorado Springs in spring, 2024. A total of 115-120 employees support and participate in Vanguard’s

focus to provide quality patient care, and to purposefully impact their community and the world. From the outset when employees are hired, they receive support and encouragement to develop their potential to become the best they can be professionally. The primary hiring criteria is to engage employees who see medicine as a calling. Staff frequently further their education and upgrade certifications; all the while receiving mentoring, and guidance towards finding their best selves. Vanguard CEO Leisle Chung, and her husband Vinh Chung, MD, who immigrated from Vietnam and graduated from Harvard Medical School, started the practice in 2009. Leisle Chung describes her husband as an incredible physician who takes exceptional care of his patients, is dedicated, caring and focused on Vanguard’s mission. All the physicians at Vanguard provide their cell phone numbers to their patients in order to be available to them and to provide the highest quality medical care. Leisle Chung states: “What I love about my job is I work with
incredibly generous people. I see it in the way they take care of patients and each other. I’m the one who’s grateful for my team.” Vanguard begins with exceptional patient care. What follows is service to the southern Colorado community in ways such as collecting and distributing coats for the underserved, and donating to Care and Share Food Bank. Underserved areas are provided with quality medical care. In 2022 Vanguard awarded over $100,000 to local charities through their Give Thanks program. These grants ranged from $500 to $25,000. Vanguard’s aesthetic skincare shop, Clara (named after the Chungs’ daughter), donates all profits to local and worldwide charities serving women and children. Vanguard also ministers to the world through projects in Honduras, Haiti, Cambodia, and Rwanda. Assuring access to clean drinking water, supporting medical projects, sending volunteer teams to areas in need, and sponsoring disadvantaged children are examples of engagement in worldwide compassion that truly make an impact.

Constructing and maintaining infrastructure are not the only focus for Basis Partners; its employees and company culture are equally important. “Ultimately, it comes down to two things that make Basis a great place to work,” said Bailey Gonzalez, marketing manager. “It’s unlike any other firm or workplace I’ve been in. People here actually care about each other. It’s more about you as an individual and not just the bottom line. There’s support to make sure we’re all wellrounded professional individuals.” Basis Partners was established in Colorado Springs in 2019. It is a privately-owned consulting engineering firm. It provides professional services to public agencies in the transportation industry. It boasts 60 employees and has 136 engineering-related projects across the state. This includes bridge inspection, transportation design and construction management. If the company name is unfamiliar, many of its projects are not. Parkway interchange, inspection of 233 of the city’s bridges and numerous other undertakings. “The second thing that’s important here is that we’re focused on the local community and only do business projects throughout the state of Colorado,” Gonzalez continued. “Helping with the infrastructure of our community is a source of pride. We can say ‘hey, we helped with that project.’” Community involvement is reflected in the company’s culture. “We believe in supporting local businesses,” Gonzalez said. “For example, we have local food trucks come in for Food Truck Fridays for our team.” Employees participate in numerous community events that support nonprofits. Gonzalez cited the Starlight Spectacular, Christmas Unlimited, food drives at Thanksgiving, the annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K run and more. Basis Partners is also involved with the Pikes Peak Business and Education Alliance. “It’s a way to introduce students to engineering and related fields,” Gonzalez said. “Our team all lives and works here. We want to make sure we give back to our community by volunteering
and supporting local organizations. We like to keep it local.” In addition to an impressive benefits package and health care, Gonzalez said there are a number of ways Basis Partners demonstrates its appreciation of its employees. These include providing incentives to encourage attaining a Professional Engineers (P.E.) license along with certification preparation. Training and continuing education in other areas are also available. “Basis is not hesitant to venture out into new areas,” she said. One example is drone training. “Cross training is also possible,” she explained. “If someone is interested in another one of our areas, they have access to training so no one ever feels stuck.” Quarterly team building events, quality swag for employees and fleet vehicles for field staff are additional perks. Monthly meetings are scheduled to address topics that will benefit employees, such as financial planning. Many members of the team participate together in the Spartan Run, and last summer Basis employees attended a Switchbacks soccer game. Plans for similar activities are being discussed for 2024, Gonzalez said.

Changing perceptions, easing clients’ pain BY RACHAEL WRIGHT

HOPE Physical Therapy & Wellness opened its first location in 2016 after Adrian Hope, vice president and director of operations, retired from the U.S. Army. For a decade Chera Hope had followed her husband from one duty station to the next. The many disruptions from relocating meant Chera was forced to restart her career again every two or three years. HOPE Physical Therapy & Wellness’ first location combined physical therapy along with float therapy and, as the company grew, additional services were offered to better serve every client. HOPE Physical Therapy & Wellness was even chosen to be on the television show, “Shark Tank,” because of its unique combination of therapy services. “We are changing the way people think about physical therapy,” Adrian Hope said. “Physical therapy is not just post-injury or post-surgery. Physical therapy can be preventative. We believe in getting people better, in fewer visits.” The Hopes have oriented their entire business toward maintaining close connections with both employees and clients. The environment is

designed to be calming and homelike and each therapist has their own private treatment room. “Some of our clients have been chronic pain suffers for the majority of their lives, and we have created a place where they can find some relief,” Adrian Hope said. Hope admitted that they had difficulty attracting the best talent in physical therapy in Colorado Springs, as they compete against larger organizations who can offer benefits that their organization simply cannot. But HOPE works hard to earn top therapists. They are allowed, for the most part, to make their own work schedules and a work/life balanced is highly valued. “We also hire military spouses,” Adrian Hope said, “knowing that they may only be with us for a few years before their family receives a new duty station. This was the struggle for Chera for many years.” HOPE Physical Therapy & Wellness partners with other small businesses to make health and financial options available to all employees, and, when physical therapy is needed, they provide it internally. The company’s retention program is also focused on providing employees with a focused
environment to treat patients with care and specialized programs. For the past three years, HOPE Physical Therapy & Wellness has been the recipient of various medals in the ‘Best of the Springs’ awards and to win a Gold in the Physical Therapy Category was extremely rewarding, Adrian Hope said. “As a business owner, it is also wonderful to provide employment to others. It’s awesome to think that our organization can provide for others.” Adrian and Chera Hope also maintain an outward community focus. The Hopes have donated for years to Hope and Home Foster Care, whose mission it is to provide homes to foster care children across the state. The Hopes also partner with Casa de Luz in the Dominican Republic. Casa de Luz is an orphanage for disabled children in Santo Domingo, where Chera volunteered while they were stationed at the U.S. Embassy. “Now, HOPE Physical Therapy & Wellness donates to Casa de Luz to pay the annual salary of a physical therapist that works at the orphanage,” Hope said. “It means a lot to us to contribute to the community, the contribution is more important than the visibility of our team.”

Comprehensive care, unique workplace BY WAYNE HEILMAN
Special to The Gazette
Rocky Mountain Health Care Services has been regularly ranked among the top workplaces in Colorado Springs among the city’s largest employers, ranking in the top three each of the last three years, including this year’s third place finish. The nonprofit was ranked last year as the second-best workplace for employers with 300 or more employees and as the top workplace in the extra-large employer category in 2021. Rocky Mountain also was honored as a best workplace in 2020 but did not rank in the top three. Nathan Olson wanted to make Rocky Mountain the city’s top workplace when he became CEO in 2017, said Debbie Baum, who joined the nonprofit a year after Olson as director of people experience. “After he arrived, I wanted to work for this organization,” Baum said. “We did it! He started something here. We do so much for our employees, such as great benefits, generous paid time off, training days, a holiday party and holiday bonuses, a boot camp for leadership development, service anniversary bonuses and an employee recognition rewards program. We want to be the type of place where good people go to work and stay.” Employees also receive an annual bonus of $100 for each year of service that are distributed during a monthly service awards event during the month of their service anniversary.
28 | THE GAZETTE | Sunday, December 10, 2023
The year-long leadership boot camp trains 12-15 a year with coaching to develop their talents and each participant develops a project or project that is pitched to Rocky Mountain’s executive leaders in a “Shark Tank”-like format. About a third of the nonprofit’s leadership has been through the camp. The employee recognition program, called Kudos, allows Rocky Mountain employees to recognize each other on a Facebook-like platform for “going above and beyond” their job and living the organization’s core values. Those recognized earn points for gift cards or cash donated to nonprofits. Rocky Mountain holds contracts totaling nearly $100 million with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing to operate the PACE (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly) in the Colorado Springs area. Under the program, the nonprofit provides a wide range of medical and social services to nearly 1,000 clients that are 55 years and older and require nursing home care. The organization employs 438 employees that include doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, behavioral health specialists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians, home health care coordinators, transportation providers and other roles. They provide services ranging from primary, specialty and emergency
medical care to meals, transportation and prescription drugs through an adult day care center, Rocky Mountain, that operates at 2502 E. Pikes Peak Ave. The nonprofit spent $3 million remodeling a building where it opened a second center earlier this year at 8595 Explorer Drive in the Briargate area and is spending $6 million to open a third center late next year or in early 2025 on Quail Lake Loop near the Broadmoor World Arena. Baum said Rocky Mountain has applied to the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing to add Falcon to its service area. Rocky Mountain also has distributed tablet computers called GrandPads that connect to wireless networks at no cost to all clients for virtual doctor visits, to send and receive email, take photos, listen to music and participate in virtual bingo. Rocky Mountain was started in 1976 as Homemaker Services with four employees in a small office in Grace Episcopal Church to provide home health care. The organization merged in 1993 with the Diabetes Education and Support Agency, and added programs for brain care and to assess clients to determine if they qualify for long-term care. The nonprofit changed its name to Rocky Mountain Health Care Services in 2003 and won its first PACE contract in 2008.

Making a commitment to achievement BY LIBBY KINDER
Special to The Gazette
Talk about a turnaround! When Mike Wedor became the principal of Skyview Middle School (District 49), beginning in the fall semester of 2022, he was faced with a school culture that was not in a positive place. He quickly committed to turning things around to “overcome the hole we had fallen into.” Skyview has a population of approximately 100 staff members and 1,000 students. First on Wedor’s agenda to move forward was to hold everyone accountable. Bolstered by his enthusiasm and commitment, all were on board from day one. Staff are continually surveyed to ensure a safe, collaborative and supportive culture. Results from the VOW (Voice of the Workforce) District 49 survey, given at the beginning of the fall 2023 semester, showed a vast improvement within a short period of time. Staff gave feedback on two essential questions: “How is the district doing supporting staff?” and “How is your direct leadership supporting you and helping you be successful?” Three years ago staff indicated they did not have confidence in school leadership, or in the communication they received. The most recent VOW survey responses from Skyview convey the highest satisfaction ratings in District 49.
30 | THE GAZETTE | Sunday, December 10, 2023
“I feel strongly that if you enjoy your work, you are already a success,” said School Registrar Jessica Wilkinson. “I enjoy my job, my work family and our community and that success is made possible due to the continued appreciation, support and respect shown to me and the position I hold.” This upward trajectory is supported through continual engagement between staff; including frequent get-togethers and biweekly staff meetings. The team has become increasingly comfortable being vulnerable with each other, lifting each other up, and providing ongoing encouragement in a more positive environment. Wedor sums up the current school culture: “The work that we get to do every day is very challenging. But we all enjoy coming to work because of the people we work with at Skyview. We have established a thriving culture that is built around the relationships that we have developed.” During the first week of school in August, a gala celebration was held to recognize not only student growth and achievement but also the accomplishments of the staff. Skyview had the highest CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) growth data within District 49 middle schools and compared to surrounding districts, and the state average was surpassed.
When students and staff arrived at school the day of the celebration, they encountered balloon-decorated hallways, a large sign outside stating: “Congratulations Skyview,” a rollicking dunk tank, and sweet treats for everyone from Rizuto’s Ice Cream truck. Skyview students and staff go above and beyond to engage with their community. Recently, 300 books were provided to families with NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) patients. A “Maui Rally” raised $1,200 in donations for the Maui public school system to aid with recovery from the devastating fires of August. Donations are regularly made to support organizations such as Care and Share Food Bank, and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado. This community engagement is largely student-run, speaking volumes about Skyview Middle School’s student culture to be accountable and actively involved. Students are tasked with organization, communication, advertising, collection and executing student-led assemblies. Wedor notes that, amazingly, the recent changes and successes at the school came about within less than two years because everyone believed in the possibilities, and was motivated to move forward into a whole new realm. He emphasized that Skyview sends the positive message that change is not only possible, but probable.

Digital company has a strong appeal BY ROBIN INTEMANN
Special to The Gazette
Rather than being called employees, those who work for Raft LLC are known as Rafters but not the kind that wind their way down rivers. Rather, the 30 Rafters in Colorado Springs are among the 240 companywide digital consultants. “It’s difficult to say just one or two things about what makes Raft a best workplace because there are so many reasons,” said Danielle McCoy, senior director of people. “But the number one thing we really push is we truly do put people and culture first.” This is further expanded on the company website: “By valuing all Rafters as individuals and customers, we foster a culture of empathy, collaboration, and excellence across all of Raft. We anticipate needs, value feedback, and foster long-term partnerships.” Raft is based in Reston, Va., with hubs in five other cities and a presence in 35 states. This is thanks to a hybrid work environment that embraces a “remote-first approach.” The Colorado Springs office opened in 2020; the company was founded in 2018.
32 | THE GAZETTE | Sunday, December 10, 2023
The ability to work remotely is part of what contributes to Raft’s success in attracting and retaining staff. Its attrition rate is 8% compared to the national average of 13.1%, according to McCoy. “We have no problem bringing people onboard,” she said. “They’re very excited to join and to stay.” Much of the appeal lies in the company’s manifesto which puts people and culture first. “This is true even when bringing on a new customer, we ask if this is what we want,” McCoy said. Even though much of the communication among Rafters is virtual, McCoy said there is a lot of collaboration and connections among them. For example, along with the term for employees is that of Raftees. These are recipients of Bonusly, a program that encourages team members to acknowledge one another through gifting gift certificates. Included among its comprehensive benefits package, Raft offers a “take as you need” vacation plan, 11 paid federal holidays and everyone gets a day off on his or her birthday. “Everyone also gets cookies on their birthday,” McCoy said.
Many prospective Rafters learn about the company at conferences. The recruiting team attends a lot of different such events, but McCoy said the biggest drawing factor is word of mouth. “It’s a big driving factor,” she said. “Everyone is passionate about Raft.” McCoy added that Raft has a “robust referral program,” where Rafters earn cash bonuses when referring someone who joins the team. Additionally, Rafters with their spouses and dependents enjoy a full range of benefits ranging from health to vision and dental. Every year Rafters receive a technology budget which allows them to upgrade and enhance their remote environment. Cash bonuses are given to those who publish their work and speak at conferences. “Another of our values is continuously growing,” McCoy said. Toward this end is an education stipend awarded each January to all employees, regardless of length of employment. This can be applied toward attending conferences, online training and other forms of continuing education.

Concepts of constant innovation, flexibility BY RACHAEL WRIGHT

In 2005, Treasure Davis began selling real estate in Colorado Springs equipped with a commitment to constant innovation and a desire to give her clients the absolute best experience before, during and after the sale. Success followed success. The first two employees Davis brought aboard remain with her company to this day, after nearly 20 years in business. “I really enjoy the atmosphere here,” said Nick Juhl, Treasure Davis Team operations manager. “It’s hard to put into a few words, but Treasure has a knack for getting to know people, and she takes care of the people around her. When you see someone bringing a ton of value to the team and to our clients, you want to do your best as well.” Juhl originally started with the company as an agent but quit as he found the schedule of an agent unmanageable. He was job hunting when Davis’ staff approached him about a 9-5 office job. Juhl then progressed from inside sales to agent development, then to business development and then to his current position. “They are amazing at taking care of their people,” Juhl said. “We have

a leadership team of five people, and everyone has a voice in the company; no one gets shut down. I think the leadership here listens well and implements changes when needed.” The Treasure Davis Team has consistently been ranked in the top 1% of Realtors, but was recently named the top firm in Colorado, which Juhl said was a huge accomplishment. But client experience is what the team most values. “I would go back to how we helped each individual client along their real estate journey,” Juhl said. “Each time you get someone into a home, help them move out of a home or help them build an investment portfolio, there’s an amazing sense of accomplishment because of the impact you’ve made in that person’s life and in their family’s life.” From the outset, Davis was adamant that all the company’s systems, processes and procedures be written down clearly so that every agent and staff member was able to produce the same service and the same experience for every client. “It’s the little tweaks and changes that make me most proud,” Juhl said. “We learn something from every transaction and from every client, so we steadily make our systems bulletproof.”
Employees are offered a flexible schedule so that families can be taken care of without the necessity of being in the office. The team is cohesive, and Juhl said the environment was one of great energy, “so positive and infectious.” The caring and efficacious nature of the Treasure Davis Team extends into the wider community, which Juhl said points directly to the company’s leader. “She’s always been into giving back and donating to the community,” he said. “We ultimately just want to give back and be known for trying to improve the community and create opportunities for people in any capacity that we can.” The Treasure Davis team volunteers their time at various organizations, like Care and Share, and donating to charities that have a similar impact and mission. “Once a month, or once a quarter,” Juhl said, “we get out into the community. It’s about going out and helping people. Whether it’s packing 550 bags for Care and Share or stuffing backpacks. We do this because it’s the right thing to do, we have a unique opportunity to help others and we like to take advantage of it.”
