ho doesn’t love a large ice cream sundae with gooey hot fudge, soft whipped cream and any toppings in the world? That sounds like heaven — until you have to decide if you want peanut butter cups, fresh strawberries, chocolate chips, nuts — the list goes on. Not only is the physical landscape of Colorado Springs diverse, but so is its educational landscape. With public schools, private schools, charter schools, online schools, colleges, universities, the United States Air Force Academy and military bases, Colorado Springs has just about everything. And the cherry on top? Colorado is a choice state, which al-
lows students who live in one district choose to attend school in another district as long as there is capacity for them and they can find transportation to and from their school, according to Devra Ashby, Public Information Officer for District 11. “It’s a good thing and a bad thing,” Ashby said. There are so many strong, diverse options for schooling, that sometimes it is overwhelming to choose where your children fit best. Colorado Springs students have so much opportunity to get an a strong education right in the area, that it comes down to picking the best place for them to grow. “It was funny, when I was growing up here, I swore I would never go to UCCS let alone a college in Colorado,” Anderson said. But things change, and she said she is glad she had different options close to home.
Davis Tutt also grew up in Colorado Springs, but travelled through private schools on his way to attending Colorado College. He went to Fountain Valley School of Colorado for high school and he said that it was one of the best CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

What I also found is smaller class sizes that have given me the personal assistance I need to be successful and I love networking and making new friends. Educational divErsity in colorado springs continuEd FroM pagE 6 decisions of my life. He was a day student, so he was able to spend his days with students from all over the world, but at the end of the day, he could go home to his family. It really reinforced his love of Colorado and was one of the key factors in his decision to attend college here. He even visited colleges in other places, but in the end wanted to be here as he loves the community and outdoors of Colorado. “Colorado Springs is where I want to be after school for the rest of my life,” he said. Tutt said the options for education are so great for such a diverse community. He said no matter what schools parents choose, everyone is working to help students succeed. According to Ashby, there are 17 districts and many different types of schools in Pikes Peak area. Students have the opportunity to find the best place for their learning, but it just may take a little time to discover the correct location. Parents tend to help their students make these decisions early in life and then students have a better idea for themselves when they are ready for high school. Along with public and private schools, there are also charter schools which have
been an important development in Colorado Springs. Stacy Rader, Director of Communications at the Colorado League of Charter Schools said that these schools provide students and parents with a new choice for education. There are yet another one of the many toppings Colorado Springs has to offer. No longer are schools “one size fits all,” according to Rader. “Parents are now shopping for the right school.” Rader also emphasized the importance of having colleges nearby for collaboration between schools. Schools can collaborate with colleges to help students at both places. So with all these options, and even college looming ahead in the future, how does shopping for the right school go? Ashby said to research and listen to all of your options and tune it to your students. Take a tour of schools and meet the principal. Take the time to understand the schools. “You’ll get a gut feeling about where your student will thrive,” Ashby said. Rader agrees. “My best advice to parents is to trust your instincts,” Rader said.
education 8 I the gazette I Sunday, January 19, 2014
According to Rader, the first two charter schools to open in Colorado Springs were Cheyenne Mountain Charter Academy and Community Prep School. These both opened in 1995. The first charter schools in Colorado opened in 1993 in Castle Rock and Pueblo. Students love the outdoors here. It is their backyard and playground, and one of the main reasons they loved growing up here. The educational landscape in Colorado Springs ranges as much as its topography. There are online schools, charter schools, religious schools, private schools, public schools, universities and colleges. According to Ashby, because of the military and transient population, it is so important to constantly educate students and families on the educational system in the area. According to Tutt, the East Coast filled with too many trees and it felt claustrophobic when he visited college there. The plus side of Colorado Springs? The area is filled with mountainous, open space to grow.

Nothing is Free These Days Except … College?
It’s no secret these days that the average cost of an in-state, public college education is running upwards of $20,000 per year; double that price tag for a private institution. Bottom line: college isn’t cheap! This news is discouraging when considering that there is a need for more college graduates for the U.S., to keep pace with developing countries and meet the demands of a world yet to be imagined. There are many reforms in public education underway, aimed at producing these future college graduates, but the one that seems to be gaining momentum is the Early College High School (ECHS) movement. ECHS programs combine high school and college curriculums, condensing the time it takes to complete high school and the first two years of college. You may ask what the difference is between the ECHS programs and advance placement (AP) classes that may also offer college credit. The answer is that while students in traditional, year-long AP classes may earn some college credit (assuming they pass the AP Exam) while still in high school, ECHS programs offer up to 60 college credits, or the equivalent of a two-year associate’s degree—for FREE! Recently, Colorado Springs School District 11 opened the doors to the first public Early College High School in the Pikes Peak region, located at the Roy J. Wasson Academic Campus, formerly Wasson High School. Partnering with Pikes Peak Community College and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, nearly 80 students have embarked on a journey that will challenge them and prepare them for a bright future. “By courageously choosing to experience high school differently, our students have the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree or 60 credit hours towards their bachelor’s degree. At Early College High School, we consciously integrate the high school and college experience, at no cost to parents,” explains D11 ECHS Principal Aurora Umana-Arko. “Whether our students graduate on to the second half of their four-year college degree or move straight into their career, by attending Early College High School, they will carry the internalized discipline necessary for success throughout their lives.” While it may seem the ECHS method is aimed only at academically gifted students, ECHS is appropriate for a wide variety of students. Research shows that average, underachieving, and well-prepared high school students are all inspired by the rigor, depth, and intensity of college work. ECHS’s focus is to create a smooth transition into postsecondary education. Students in D11’s ECHS will not be placed into a class for which they are not ready or able to pass. Due to the small class sizes, ECHS students will receive more support from teachers than students in a traditional high school. The goal of D11’s ECHS is to help students succeed, not to set them up for failure. “At the beginning of the school year, Early College opened with 52 students. Of those original 52 students, 23 percent have passed the Accuplacer and will move into “guarantee transfer” college English and algebra. Our students’ efforts are paying off!” says Umana-Arko. By offering the opportunity for students to ultimately graduate from the ECHS with both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree, this method is opening doors for low-income families, first-generation college students, English language learners, and others who are so often underrepresented in higher education. It is one way Colorado Springs District 11 is preparing every student for a world yet to be imagined. t’s time to move toward a more meaningful future. And to do so, it helps to have the “right” connections that help you get from where you are to where you want to be. Colorado Technical University can help you get there. At CTU, busy professionals pursue their education while also achieving their personal and professional goals because the university keeps them connected to what matters most in their lives. Students have access to innovative learning technologies that give them control over what, where, when and how they learn. Plus, experienced, real-world professors — who average 16 years of industry experience1 — lead courses, so students gain the knowledge they need to hit the ground running and build a powerful, profes-
sional network in the process. CTU is leading the way when it comes to delivering an extraordinary education for the not-so-ordinary student. The university has a top-rated MBA program2 and its key business programs are ACBSP accredited3, which certifies that the teaching and learning processes within the Business and Management degree programs meet the rigorous educational standards established by this governing body. But the true benefits of an accredited CTU education are seen after graduation, where the number of senior-level job titles held by alumni more than doubles after earning a degree4. Graduates are connected to more than 70,000 alumni, some of whom hold positions in a number of Fortune 100 companies5. Connect with CTU at coloradotech.edu/ colorado-springs or call 719.598.0200.

tional public schools. What’s different about them is simple: Charter schools are independently run. They have a school-based board of directors and are able to make decisions about hiring, budgeting, curriculum, mission, and more, at the school’s level. Charter schools enter into a “charter” contract with a local school district or the state of Colorado. In exchange for independence and flexibility, the school is held accountable by the district and possibly the state for values like student performance and financial responsibility. There are almost 30 charter schools to choose from in Colorado Springs. You can find them in different areas, from Harrison District 2 to District 11 down South; Falcon District 49 to Academy District 20, and even in Monument. If you’d rather keep your child at home, there are multiple online charter school options available. Colorado Springs is home to many types of charter schools. Some focus on gifted and talented learners, others teach most of the day’s instruction in a second language, and there are even charter high schools that offer the chance to earn college credits. Waldorf-inspired models and Expeditionary models focus on project-based learning, or learning through doing and many prepare students for college, starting as early as Kindergarten. There are charter schools that focus on music and the arts and there is even a charter school that has all students participate in orchestra. Want to learn more? Visit the booth sponsored by the Colorado League of Charter Schools on Saturday, January 25, at the 2014 Education Fair. We would be happy to talk through your student’s educational needs and recommend a school or two that might just be the perfect fit for your family.
