How to create

extra space

for guests

••

omeowners who enjoy entertaining frequently sometimes host overnight guests. While many hosts and hostesses have spare bedrooms for overnight or long-term guests, many others do not. But those among the latter group willing to get a little creative can find more places for overnight guests to rest their heads.

SOFA

Living room or den sofas can double as bedding for overnight guests. As a short-term solution, a night or two on the couch can be comfortable enough. Be sure to cover the sofa with freshly laundered sheets and provide those amenities one would expect in a guest space. Access to a television, a reading lamp, a fan for some white noise and a table on which to place a phone or alarm clock are helpful to have. Such items will make guests more comfortable. If your living room or family room has a door that can be closed, this will help create more privacy for guests.

CONVERTIBLE BED

Marketed frequently under the brand name Murphy Bed, convertible beds can incorporate sleeping options into rooms with limited space. This furniture essentially is a bed that folds vertically or horizontally into a frame. When closed, the bed can look like a decorative storage closet or armoire. Some convertible beds come with bookcase accessories to expand storage space and also make

the piece look like a more cohesive unit. Designers also have experimented with these beds, and some transform from a desk or even from a low-lying bookshelf or bench into a bed.

SOFA BED OR CHAIR

Sofa beds and chairs have a fold-out bed nestled beneath their cushions. Depending on the size of the couch, a twin, full or queen-sized bed may be housed within. Sofa beds vary in regard to their comfort levels, so prospective hosts should investigate their options to ensure guests have the most comfortable sleeping situations possible. A bed in a couch can turn an office or living space into a guest sanctuary in a matter of minutes. In addition, some sofa beds also have extra space built within for storing blankets and pillows. Many popular furniture retailers offer couch brands that can be equipped with a bed. And if space is especially tight, consider a convertible chair that has a twin-sized bed tucked away.

BUNK BEDS

Bunk beds may seem like child’s play, but they make great use of vertical space. Share a kid’s room with your son or daughter and let the guest take your own bedroom. Otherwise, equip a home office with bunk beds and have two more sleeping spaces available. Accommodating guests when you don’t have a guest bedroom can take some creativity, but those willing to think outside the box can find options that don’t compromise guests’ comfort.

aving a comfortable and accommodating guest bedroom is important to many homeowners. People love to welcome family and friends with everything they need for an enjoyable and memorable stay. Designer Katherine Speas of Speas Interior Design in Colorado Springs shares her top tips for arranging the ultimate guest bedroom: COLORS can vary in a guest bedroom,

but I usually stay with the theme of the rest of the house. We recently finished a guest bedroom with taupe and yellows, along with white and grays; which are cheerful yet can be dramatic and sensual. A lot of people like to use soft blues, beiges and greens in bedrooms as they are restful and calming colors. A PRACTICAL USE OF SPACE for a guest bedroom is doubling it as an office — if desks are kept neat. When a Murphy Bed is used, you can also double the room as an exercise or yoga room. Of course, it can also be used by a spouse that is restless or not sleeping well. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

GUE S T BEDROOM IDE AS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4

The ideal guest bedroom has a spa bath to go with it. At Speas Interior Design, one of our guest spas includes a soaking tub and partial glass panel, to create a “wet room” like in European hotels. A guest wanting a luxurious bath or a hot shower can enjoy this bath. MOST IMPORTANT — the mattress must be comfortable! Twin beds work great for kids, while king and queen beds work well for couples. They all work for individuals — it just depends on the size of the room and the needs of most of your guests. If you have more than one guest room, I would suggest one room with twin beds and one with king or queen. NICE DESIGN TOUCHES are soft bedding in layers so that guests don’t get too hot or cold. A bench at the foot of the bed is great to set the bedding on when not needed. A chair or chairs are good to have in case a guest wants to read or relax or just sit down to put their shoes on. I like to have a TV in the guest room, so a guest can get away if they want some quiet time to themselves. Black out shades or draperies are good as guests could be coming from different time zones and have trouble sleeping. Good lighting for reading in bed is also important. A nice clock that is not lit up helps as well. A chest is not necessary if there are drawers in the closet; and I do think it is nice for guests to unpack their suitcase. Make sure there are plenty of empty hangers in the closet for a guest to hang their clothes. An iron with an ironing board is a nice touch if you have an extra. A table or night tables also help for setting items down. A vanity to sit at to apply makeup with a magnified makeup mirror is a nice touch if you don’t have one in the guest bath. Licensed Insured

GUEST ROOMS ARE MADE WELCOMING by adding scented real or LED candles, dimmable lighting, fresh flowers and soft throws. Luxurious linen or cotton sheets freshly washed, and down or polysilk pillows are wonderful additions for guests. Washable duvet covers work well for suites. Don’t forget art for the walls too — never leave them bare. A Keurig coffee maker is a great way to keep guests selfsufficient with coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Remember the more amenities they have, the less time you spend waiting on or entertaining them. The ultimate guest suites should be as pleasant as staying at a boutique hotel. THE SPA — the ideal guest bedroom has a spa bath to go with it. At Speas Interior Design, one of our guest spas that we designed included a soaking tub and partial glass panel, to create a “wet room” like in European hotels. A guest wanting a luxurious bath or a hot shower can enjoy this bath. Of course, a heated floor and heated towel bars complete the comfort. Another guest bath we designed had an aromatherapy and Chroma therapy steam shower and separate dressing room with vessel sinks. The use of mosaic tiles, heated floors and towel bars were used again. You can also include a bidet commode seat. Blow dryers, toiletries and extra toothbrushes and toothpaste are always a nice touch. To learn more visit SpeasInteriorDesign.com.

TAKE OUR ADVICE ADVICE

AMY DICKINSON

Dear Amy: My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. I am 26, and he is 49. He has been married and divorced twice. I have heard from his friends that he has not had a great track record with being faithful. My boyfriend’s response to this is that I should believe him over

his friends. I have just recently found out that he has been having an affair with another woman (whom he works with) for almost a year. Amy, I am completely broken. I cannot eat or sleep. He came crying back to me, telling me he wants to make things work with me and wants me to move in immediately and get married! I am not sure what to do. I have absolutely no trust in him. He has said he will do whatever it takes to make it work. He has suggested counseling (which he never did in either of his marriages) and he has even suggested that we have tracking apps put on our phones so I know where he is at all times. Even with all of this, I do not know what to do. A part of me feels like saying “once a cheater, always a cheater,” but the other part tells me to give him a chance because I still love him very much. — Cheated On

ADVICE

Question: One of my neighbors thinks vaccines are a health risk, and she can’t be convinced of the science. DR. OZ AND DR. ROIZEN I read her your columns about HPV vaccines because she has three daughters, but I can’t get through to her. What else can I do? — Jenny E., Largo, Fla.

Dear Cheated On: I can’t say for certain, “Once a cheater, always a cheater,” but I can say this: Not to put too fine a point on it, but if a 49-yearold man with a cheating history can’t manage to stay faithful to a young and fine woman he is in a new relationship with, then he is a certified and chronic cheater. Do not marry him. Do not move in with him. Do not put tracking apps on your phone — this puts you in the position of trying to police his movements. A new relationship should not have the pressure of mutual surveillance in order to maintain trust. There are so many good men out there who don’t cheat. Don’t sell yourself short, and make all of your future choices in service of your own self-esteem and personal worth.

Answer: It’s ironic, but it’s precisely because of the great success of vaccines that she has the luxury to think like that. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980, and we’re betting your friend has never seen a child die from measles or witnessed the crippling and scarring left behind by polio. The chance your friend’s kids will benefit versus suffer a serious complication from an entire battery of vaccines is more than 40,000 to 1. When vaccines are doing their job and most of the population is getting them, it makes it seem far less urgent to get the inoculations — but actually, it’s just as important as ever. Here’s another example that shows how important vaccines are and how effective they can be in protecting the general population: Rotavirus is a highly contagious stomach bug that triggers stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Traditionally, it sent 1 in 5 children to the doctor and 1 in 10 to the hospital. But since the rotavirus vaccine was developed in 2013, childhood cases have dropped almost 70 percent. And after it became part of the national infant immunization program in the U.K. (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also lists it on their infant vaccination schedule), British researchers noted something else: Cases of rotavirus, as well as acute gastroenteritis, declined in older children and adults. They call it “herd immunity” — everyone benefits from the vaccine even if they haven’t had it, because of the overall decrease in instances of circulating rotavirus. In short, because babies are vaccinated, we all stay healthier.

ADVICE

HINTS FROM HELOISE

Dear Heloise: I like to walk my dog early in the morning, so I wear a reflective vest. But my dog is black and not easily seen. So, I got another vest and cut it down to fit him. The vests are held together with a hook-andloop closure, so I can make it fit perfectly snug on my black Lab/ greyhound mix. Now everyone can see us. — C.P.S. in Virginia

Very smart indeed. For other readers, they do sell ID tags and vests for dogs that are neon, much like the safety vests that law enforcement, road workers and others wear to be seen. Hop online and type in “dog safety vest.” — Heloise Dear Heloise: Those weeklong pill-of-the-day medicine boxes are handy for things beside pills. They work well to store portions of fish food or tiny dried shrimp for turtles, and medications for dogs or cats, too. I’m sure your readers would have other uses; how about if they suggest some? — Brenda in New Hampshire You bet! I’m always happy to print reusing, repurposing and recycling hints. Email Heloise@ Heloise.com; fax 210-HELOISE (435-6473); or write Heloise, P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279. — Heloise Dear readers: When renting an automobile, you are responsible for keeping the car in good condition. Any NEW scratches, stains, dings, dents, etc., can all be charged to you. When you are going over the car with the rental agent, take pictures of the condition of the car, noting scrapes or flaws. — Heloise Dear Heloise: I’ve discovered an easy way to brush the dog. I found an “undercoat rake” at the pet store. It is specially built to loosen and remove more hair from the dog than regular brushing. This is all fur that is loose but doesn’t come off without a struggle. The rake makes grooming much easier, and it is safe and painless for the animal. I love it! — S. Anderson, via email —

TODAY’S HOROSCOPES BY JERALDINE SAUNDERS ARIES (March 21-April 19) Stay on the fence. Choosing a side in a disagreement may do little to benefit you, so it may be wiser just to keep out of it altogether. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Agree to disagree. You and a loved one may have trouble getting on the same page. You may be better off doing your own thing rather than arguing over who’s right. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Take a breather. Do what is expected of you, but otherwise keep a light schedule and use your free time to recharge your batteries after a long week. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Put a premium on trust. You should ask yourself whether someone has truly earned the right to your confidence before sharing secrets or entering commitments.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Maintain a direct course to your objectives and don’t become sidetracked by distractions. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Everybody may be jumping off buildings, but that doesn’t mean you should join them. Steer clear of those who give in to flights of fancy as they may lead you down a rather pointless path. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22.) You can live without it. A purchase may seem alluring now, but in a day or two you could realize it is both impractical and frivolous. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Stand by your convictions and maintain your opinions even if everyone around you disagrees with them. You may fare better off on your own or in small groups rather than being part of the crowd.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) He who makes waves could get in over his head. Trying to make changes or railing against a consensus opinion could be an uphill battle. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) A push in the wrong direction could upset the apple cart. Give a situation some time to unfold on its own before taking impulsive action that could send you back to square one. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Don’t lose your cool. You could say or do something that could have lasting consequences if you allow your emotions to get the best of you. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Hurrying into a relationship with unrealistic expectations could put you in a no-win situation. Keep your feet on the ground and get to know someone better before making plans for the future.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jan. 28 During the upcoming four to six weeks, you may be too quick to take offense or may find that those in charge rub you the wrong way. Get some extra exercise and funnel your fury at the unfairness of life into constructive outlets. Clean the baseboards or paint the garage floor and wait until May, when your business savvy is at a high point, to make changes to your financial plan or to make an attempt to boost your career.

AROUND THE HOUSE

GOREN BRIDGE

Tips for fixing your doorbell and replacing your dishwasher

WITH BOB JONES ©2016 Tribune Content Agency, LLC

weekly bridge quiz q 1 - Neither vulnerable, as South, you hold: ♠AJ54♥AqJ7♦AJ♣kJ6

BY KEN MOON, SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Dear Ken: I’m having trouble hearing my doorbell in certain parts of the house. Any recommendations? – Mildred KEN MOON Why not go wireless? It would be impractical to add another ringer to your existing system. You would have to string wires through the walls and maybe add a bigger transformer. A self-contained wireless door bell system, on the other hand, can go anywhere. I found a package on line with two plug-in receivers — the chimes – and a battery powered button for about $25. A similar bundle with two buttons and three receivers is less than $40. To install, you simply unhook the old bell transformer, remove the old door button and place the new selfadhesive one over the hole where the wires used to come out. Then insert the receivers into an outlet in whichever rooms you want to hear the chime. Incidentally, the receivers are programmable with dozens of melodies for your listening pleasure. Dear Ken: What do I look for in a whole house fan? Does the fan bother the loose insulation? What about the size of the vents? – Diana Look for a belt driven fan and motor combination. These units tend to be a little quieter than the direct drive models, where the motor sits right on top of the fan blades. To keep the blown insulation at bay, we usually build some sort of a framed, boxlike barricade around the fan with plywood, sheet rock or even stiff cardboard. It not only protects the insulation, but it also makes a good base on which to set some Styrofoam sheets during the winter. You’ll probably need some more attic vents. Most new homes have minimal ventilation, and many

weST NOrTH eAST 1♦ Pass 1♠

times those soffit vents behind the gutters — which are half the system — are blocked with insulation. Plan on installing a couple of turbine vents and/or a gable vent or two if you don’t already have them. The installation instructions for the fan you’re considering will have a net free vent opening number — expressed in square feet — they recommend to handle the enormous air flow from the unit. These fans are fairly complicated to install. They may involve framing modifications to the rafters, drywall patching, an electrical line and those extra vents. Some heating contractors will do this work, and there are also small companies you can find on Google which specialize in nothing but whole house fan installation. Dear Ken: I have to replace my dishwasher. Unfortunately, it’s trapped in the hole because of a ceramic tile floor added after the house was built. Is there any magic way to get it out? – Deb Maybe. Loosen the two screws which secure the dishwasher to the countertop, then pry up on the metal frame a little to take the weight off the four adjustable legs. Have a helper screw these “feet” upwards until they stop. That will probably buy you most of an inch of extra play. Then you can ease the dishwasher out of the hole by first tilting it backwards into the opening. If you need a smidgen more play, you can pry the metal frame which holds the feet inward a bit to partially collapse it. Reverse this process to install the new dishwasher. You can even remove the adjustable feet entirely to gain about three-eighths inch more leeway. Ken Moon is a home inspector in the Pikes Peak region. His radio show airs at 9 a.m. Saturday and is carried on KRDO, AM 1240 and FM 105.5. Visit AroundTheHouse.com.
