etting adequate exercise at home can be difficult, since it can be challenging to stay disciplined without the guidance of an instructor/ trainer or the motivation that comes from working out in a gym-setting. However, if you have a space set aside that is exclusively dedicated to fitness, then getting in the groove of daily physical activity can become much simpler.

DECLUTTER: You do not need an entire home-gym to have dedicated workout space. Sometimes all it takes is donating some extraneous furniture to gain the space you need. For example, a living room with a huge sectional couch, two end tables and a large coffee table

with little room to move will never inspire you to lay down and do some crunches. Try working with wide open floor spaces in the living room, bedroom, basement or den. You can remove that table smack dab in the middle of the room and instead have weights, a yoga mat, and an exercise ball. You can even workout while watching television! You’d be surprised how much of a difference ample floor space makes.

CHOOSE YOUR EQUIPMENT: If you have a room in your house that has some extra space, it can be the ultimate spot for some workout equipment. Popular in-home equipment for cardio includes a punching bag, rowing machine, air bike, elliptical and treadmill. For strength you can purchase adjustable dumbbells, weight lifting bench and medicine balls. For those on a budget,

HG 2 I THE GAZETTE I SATURDAY, FEB 25, 2017

a jump rope, ab wheel, elliptical trainer and yoga mat are great options.

HIT THE PAVEMENT: Getting into the habit of taking brisk walks or jogs in the morning and evening is wonderful for the body and mind. Especially with all of the stunning views that this city holds, taking a nice run, jog, walk or bike ride around your neighborhood can be deeply enjoyable. With springtime just around the corner, you will have plenty of beautiful weather to savor while you get the cardio you need. You can also utilize your backyard for swimming — if you have a pool, jump roping, hula hooping, playing with your dog, or even playing tag with the kids! BUILD YOUR IN-HOME GYM: If you have an entire room that is never

utilized and a little extra money in the budget, why not build an in-home gym? Oftentimes there is wasted space in the basement that can instead be a beneficial space for health and wellness. Optimal flooring for your in-home gym can be carpet tiles, rubber flooring, foam flooring or vinyl tiles. For wall colors, first consider what kind of home gym you are building. If you will be weight-lifting, blue is a popular choice. For aerobics, bright reds and oranges are energizing. For yoga rooms, ocean-blues and grass-greens are calming. To top it off, install a high-quality sound system to keep you motivated with your favorite music. It is very important for your in-home gym to have proper ventilation and fans for safety and comfort. Add your equipment and you’re set for workout success.

Maintenance for older homes and appliances

BY KEN MOON, SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Dear Ken: I have a house built in the ’60s. Can I add more wall insulation? What kind? – Dan First you need to know how much you have. Pull the cover off of two or three electrical outlets on exterior walls. Turn off each circuit and probe around the edges of the box with an old kitchen knife. If you need more space for your examination, cut the edges of the sheet rock to make a wider opening. Don’t worry, you can cover the hole with a new, oversized plastic plate. You will probably hear the crinkle of insulation paper facing. In a home of this vintage, you undoubtedly will find a twoand-a-half-inch thick batt. This examination will demonstrate to you how difficult it will be to inject more material in those wall cavities — whether loose cellulose or polyurethane foam, it will get hung up on the batts plus any pipes and wires that run through the space. Bottom line: It is seldom a good idea to add more insulation to an existing wall. You can, however, add more R-value if you ever change the exterior wall covering. If you were to switch to stucco or vinyl siding, the contractor can include a layer of half-inch Styrofoam to start with.

breaks. Once the filament is exposed, grip the inside of the bulb with needlenosed pliers and twist the base out of the socket. If the socket wants to rotate, let it. My experience is that the bulb will release before the socket is damaged. To help for future removals, rub a little Vaseline on the bulb threads first.

Dear Ken: I have a ceiling fan with four bulbs. When a light blew out, I tried to remove it, but the socket turned with it. The bulb is too small to grip inside the tulip globe, and I can’t slide the globe off without unscrewing the bulb. Any ideas? – Stan Use a piece of duct tape — glue side out — wrapped around your hand, grab the bulb and turn it with this extra grip. If it won’t budge, you’ll have to break it. First, put on goggles and gloves, then cover the end of the bulb with a cloth and tap it with the pair of pliers until it

Dear Ken: I have a two year old dishwasher which isn’t cleaning very well. Could the drain be stopped up or is it a water pressure problem? – Kirsten Make sure the spray arms are working properly. If there’s both an upper and lower rotating arm, check for rotation by swiftly opening the door mid-cycle. If, on the other hand, you have a tower arm that rises to the glassware level, check that it fully extends and that its path isn’t blocked by other dishes. If these tests check out, take the lower arm apart by unscrewing its center. You may need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the parts all the way down to the pump. Check for debris inside this well. Finally, while you have that spray arm loose, clean out its spray holes with some fine wire. Dear Ken: The paint on the bottom of our water heater is peeling. The heater is working fine. Is this okay? – Gene Condensation in and around the tank jacket is normal, and usually reveals itself as minor rust spots. It’s probably from the vapor produced by the burning of natural gas. On the other hand, rust and corrosion blemishes accompanied by continuous dripping water — whether a gas or electric model — usually means it’s time to replace the water heater itself. Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers. Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family.

WORK OUT IN THE MORNING

LOOK FOR GYMS WITH CHILDCARE

Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, and women who get up just 45 minutes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day.

EXERCISE WITH THE KIDS

Working mothers looking to find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly post-meal walks. Exercising with kids is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children.

Working out at a gym can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren’t going to waste. But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

EXERCISE DURING LUNCH

If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of onsite exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk.

YEAR ROUND GARDENING

Wind damage

W

BY EILEEN TULLY, COLORADO MASTER GARDENER

ind. Air in motion. On a hot summer day, a breeze is heavenly. But fierce, damaging winds over 50 to 60 miles per hour are another story. And, this has been a winter of winds. In winter, high winds are caused by horizontal air pressure differences — masses of hot air and cold air. These large temperature contrasts result in a jet stream in the upper troposphere bringing strong whipping winds that blow over fences, tear off roof shingles and uproot mature trees. It’s not just trees that suffer. Forceful, persistent winds dry out needle and branch tissues, causing damage. Wind contributes to soil erosion and root damage. During the Jan. 9 mega-wind — along with other damage — high winds blew away so much mulch and soil in one corner of my garden that allium bulbs were exposed. Sustained wind increases moisture loss from soil, and can leave moisture levels dangerously low

HOW TO DEAL WITH THE SURVIVORS Trees: First, assess the damage and be careful around large trees and power lines. Call an arborist if the tree is leaning or if there are major broken limbs high in the tree. Large, mature trees that are leaning probably cannot be saved. Sometimes young trees can be gently pulled upright. Again, this is a job for a professional. The bad news: It will be harder for the tree to recover if there many large, broken limbs. And, if there are cracks in the trunk, or roots are exposed and lifted out of the

CDOT WORKERS CLEAR A FALLEN TREE FROM THE SOUTHBOUND OFF RAMP FROM I-25 AT S. CIRCLE DRIVE DURING THE JAN. 9 WIND STORM. PHOTO BY MARK REIS, THE GAZETTE

soil, even if the tree is upright, chances for recovery are limited. The good news: There are things you can do to help your trees that haven’t had as much damage. On branches closer to the ground, you can cut down broken jagged limbs or loosely hanging attached branches. Then remove branches that are cracked or broken. Do not remove or prune more than is necessary right away and don’t use paint or ‘wound dressings’ to cover the cut. After you remove broken branches you can leave fine pruning to early spring. Roses and shrubs: Wind-whipped broken canes and branches can be cut back to just above the break.

HG 4 I THE GAZETTE I SATURDAY, FEB 25, 2017

If you have significant soil erosion on slopes, terraces and hills plan to create a defense to control erosion. Replace as much soil as necessary and plant hardy ground covers and creeping shrubs such as Sedum Angelina in sunny spots and Sweet Woodruff in shade. Add some rocks or a boulder in strategic places. Cover any exposed soil until the groundcovers fill in with a one-and-a-half-inch layer of mulch. Trees and shrubs have a remarkable ability to recover so once you’ve pruned back dangling, broken branches wait until spring. Don’t fertilize any tree or large shrub that’s recovering from this major stress. On warmer days, when temperatures are over 40 degrees, water

trees, shrubbery and garden areas deeply where perennials are planted. If your mulch has been blown over the lawn rake as much as possible back into the garden and around trees. Living in Colorado means always dealing with wind. Fortunately, the wild weather we experienced on Jan. 9 is rare. But preparing for wind in all its forms and knowing what to do when serious damage occurs in your landscape is smart. For answers to urban horticultural questions, contact ask.extension.org. Simple ways

to avoid injuries when working out METRO SERVICES

A desire to live a healthy, active life compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out.

CONF IRM YOUR T ECHNIQUE IS T HE RIGH T ONE

Exercise science is continuously evolving, and that means workouts and fitness machines are evolving as well. When using a piece of equipment for the first time or altering a workout routine, men and women should consult with a gym employee or personal trainer to learn the correct technique. Incorrect technique can lead to minor and serious injuries because muscles are used in ways they are not intended to be used when exercises are performed properly. Research appropriate techniques, taking advantage of online video tutorials if you don’t exercise at a gym, to ensure the exercises you want to perform are done properly. When beginning a new routine, ask a friend or gym employee to observe your workout and let you know if you are doing anything incorrectly.

TAKE OUR ADVICE ADVICE

Dear Amy: My in-laws always seem to feel the need to comment on people’s weight, either right to their faces at a family function or gossiping about it behind their backs. My mother-in-law has said to AMY my daughter, in front of everyDICKINSON one at Thanksgiving, ‘”You were pretty heavy there for a while, but you look pretty good now.” My daughter is the recipient of at least one insult per visit. These comments are usually made during holidays, and with these zingers being hurled on a regular basis, people are not eager to be with them. My husband will never stand up to them, and he’s in his 60’s. Also, they never seem interested in anything we do, be it trips we’ve taken, movies or concerts we’ve seen or our jobs. Whatever we’ve done, they’ve either seen it, done it or put it down as something or somewhere they would never go or do. I hope they see themselves in this letter and think about how hurtful their actions are. — Weight Does Not Equal Worth

ADVICE

DR. OZ AND DR. ROIZEN

— Gregory T., Portland, Maine

Question: I’m miserable this winter with the cold and damp — my back hurts and my joints ache. Is there something I can do to ease my discomfort?

Dear Weight Does Not Equal: When I was a child, my own grandparents lived across the country. We rarely saw them. But whenever we did see them, my grandmother’s only comments to her grandchildren involved our weight, our looks and our relative standing (in attractiveness) to our cousins. Realistically, my grandmother might have had much more extensive conversations with my siblings and me, but once she called me a little fatty, my ears started ringing and I didn’t hear anything else. If your mother-in-law casually hurls one of these comments your way, in the moment you should say, “Please, let’s not discuss our weight today.” Otherwise, concerning their behavior — gasbagging on about themselves, hurling insults across the table, demonstrating a lack of interest in others — all of this simply means that family members will do their best to avoid spending time with them. This is too bad for all of you, and it is probably not the way they want to be remembered.

Answer: Sorry, Gregory, but if you believe that cold weather makes your joints painful and achy, well, Australian scientists say you should really blame your miseries on something else! In a recent study from down under, researchers documented the weather a day or two before almost 1,000 people with lower back pain said their pain kicked in. Taking into account temperature, air pressure, humidity, even wind direction, the researchers couldn’t find any direct connection between weather and the people’s pain. And in another study of weather and osteoarthritis knee pain, researchers found no correlation between increased knee pain and temperature, relative humidity, air pressure or precipitation. So what gives? Probably you just notice pain more on cold, dreary days or would rather attribute pain to something external. But whatever the reason, it’s time to take steps to ease those aches. • Lose weight, if needed. Every extra pound puts pressure on joints and soft tissue. • Get moving! For arthritis: Appropriate, regular physical activity strengthens muscles around affected joints, protects against bone loss, may reduce joint swelling and pain, helps lubricate cartilage, improves sleep and boosts energy. For lower-back problems: A study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that exercise (strengthen your core!) reduces pain episodes by 35 percent. • Add ALA and DHA omega-3 to your diet! Randomized, controlled trials found that both omega-3s decrease joint pain. • Learn to manage stress! Studies show that managing stress decreases joint pain by about 35 percent. Try mindful meditation, aerobic exercise and/or cognitive behavioral therapy.

ADVICE

Dear readers: Housebreaking a new dog or a new-to-you dog requires two things above all else: patience and consistency! Here are some doggone good hints to help: • Make sure that dogs know HINTS where they are allowed in the FROM house. Training time is NOT a HELOISE good time to let your dog have free roam of the house. • A crate works well as the dog’s own space, and for many it’s a “safe haven.” Line with an old shower curtain topped with plenty of newspapers for easy cleanup. • Frequent bathroom breaks are a must! Especially upon waking up and an hour or so after eating. * Positive praise works far better than negative words. — Heloise P.S. Woof, woof from Chammy and Henry VIII, our two dog adoptees! Dear readers: For many of us, myself very much included, a good cup of coffee in the morning is a great way to start the day! Delicious and satisfying, the aroma, warmth and flavor all come together to say “yummy in the tummy.” However, a dirty coffeepot can spoil the day. Coffee-bean oils and sediment can gum up the workings. Clean the pot with hot, soapy water. Rinse well and dry to prevent a buildup. To clean a drip coffee maker, run a few cups of full-strength vinegar through once and let it sit in the unit for 20-30 minutes. Then turn on, run through a second time and follow with several cycles of water. It’s ready for the next pot of joe. I’ve compiled my favorite coffee, tea and hot-chocolate recipes in a handy pamphlet. To order, just send a long, stamped (70 cents), self-addressed envelope, along with $3, to: Heloise/Coffees and Teas. P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. Or you can order online at Heloise. com. Some folks insist on filtered water, but tap water from my tap works just great. The real hint is to wash (with soap and water) the pot often, NOT just rinse with water and put it back. — Heloise —
