MAKEOVERS

Upgrading the heart of the home

T

BY GINA CRONIN, GINA.CRONIN@GAZETTE.COM

he kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s the space where families gather to cook up dinner recipes passed down through generations, bake those festive holiday cookies year after year, and bond while carving a pumpkin or squeezing fresh lemonade. It’s a space where timeless memories are made. This special room also happens to be one of the top two that will help sell your home, along with the master bedroom and

bathroom. The kitchen is worth investing in, whether for your own enjoyment with family and friends or for significantly increasing the value of your home. The changes made to the kitchen don’t have to be dramatic — even minor switches can make a meaningful difference. On the other hand, if you have an outdated kitchen and a total makeover is in the budget, it’s worth the splurge.

BACKSPLASH

There are near-endless options for backsplashes out there, and it can be a fun

process to choose which works best with your kitchen design. While the most popular choices are tile and natural stone, there are many other backsplashes to choose from. Rustic reclaimed wood, brick, subway tiles, marble slab, stainless steel, ceramic with glass tiles and copper tile are also popular choices. For something different, check out a chalkboard, backlit, river pebble, bold pattern or mirror backsplash. Budget friendly options include coffee bean cast in epoxy or tin sheets. Though the backsplash is an area where you can express yourself, it’s important to ensure that it does not

clash or take away from other elements in the kitchen.

FLOORS

Changing up the floors can make the whole kitchen feel new, clean and fresh. For durability, hardwoods such as oak and cherry work beautifully in open-concept floor plans. Vinyl flooring is great for those who cook a lot, are on a budget and need an easy-to-maintain floor. Porcelain is known for its durability and beautiful stone-finish, while cork is a wonderful eco-friendly option. Other popular styles CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

stainless steel METRO SERVICES

No matter the style of a homeowner’s kitchen, be it modern, traditional or farmhouse, stainless steel appliances can add a pop of shine and a touch of class. Proponents of stainless steel appliances note their easy maintenance, stylish look and durability. Plus, the neutral tone of stainless steel helps it blend in with just about any color palette. Stainless steel is lauded for its strength and resistance to corrosion and rust. These attributes make it a popular choice in kitchens, where moisture is an issue. Although they are certainly durable choices, stainless steel appliances require maintenance to keep them looking and performing at their best. Considering that stainless steel also costs more than other finish options, taking the time to learn proper care can help protect homeowners’ investments. Avoid chlorine bleach or other products containing chloride. Although stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, it is not completely impervious. Chlorine products can damage the surface of stainless steel appliances and stain them if the chlorine is left to sit. Do not use metal scourers or coarse abrasives on the stainless steel because such products may scratch the steel.

Steel wool pads can leave behind a residue of small metal particles that may eventually rust. Baking soda mixed with a little dish soap can be used to remove some tough dirt and stains. Rinse well and towel dry to avoid streaking. Clean and wipe the steel in the direction of the “grain.” Usually this means working from the top of the appliance and moving down toward the floor. Consult with the owner’s manual before undertaking any maintenance or cleaning. The appliance may have a special coating over the stainless steel to help protect it, and it’s best to know what you’re dealing with before getting your hands dirty. If you will be trying a cleaning product or scouring method, always test it first in an inconspicuous spot to see if it is effective or harmful. Julien, a leader in commercial kitchen equipment, recommends applying cleansers with a soft cloth or sponge. Then wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth or allow to air dry. Stainless steel remains a popular material in kitchens for sinks and appliances. With care, stainless steel can look like new for years to come.

Considering that stainless steel also costs more than other finish options, taking the time to learn proper care can help protect homeowners’ investments.

YEAR ROUND GARDENING

March garden calendar BY EILEEN TULLY, COLORADO MASTER GARDENER

This is winter’s final gasp. It’s been a tough winter in some ways — windy and dry. Even though we’ve had some warm sunny days, lack of moisture always takes its toll on the Colorado garden. It’s a transition month: some days will be fine for garden cleanup — some days, it will be deep winter. In the past, March has been our snowiest month, and while I love to see the miracle of emerging green life I’ll admit that a few good snow showers would be welcome. Become aware of the microclimates in your garden. Look for emerging plants and note which part of your garden is coming out of dormancy faster than other parts. In my front garden, lupine and Shasta daisies are sprouting up in mid-February while the gardens on my side yard are still dormant. The front garden faces east. Knowing which areas are warmer and more protected than others allows you to try plants that you normally wouldn’t.

BASIC GARDEN CHORES

Early spring, before major planting, is a good time to have your soil tested. That way you’ll know what you’re dealing with and it will help you prepare your ground for planting. Soil test kits are available at the CSU Extension Office,17 N. Spruce St., Room 220. Prune Clematis jackmanii in early March before it comes out of dormancy. This cultivar of clematis blooms on new wood every year and if left unpruned, it will become spindly with decreased blooms. Cut stems back to nine to 12 inches above ground with clean, straight cuts. Prune to just above two strong buds. In the coming weeks, when new growth appears, apply a balanced 10-to-10-to-10 fertilizer and train the new stems, or tendrils, around a support like poultry wire. Other vines can be pruned now when they are still dormant. If you can’t do it now, wait until after they have bloomed before pruning.

PLANT

Indoors, after March 15, start seeds under grow lights. Perennials like lupine

and delphinium and annuals like cardinal vine, hyacinth bean vine, marigolds, zinnia, nasturtium and many more. As soon as ground can be worked, till in one-inch to two-inch of composted cotton burrs or aged manure into your vegetable garden. Mid-March plant peas and sweet peas directly in the garden, soak the seeds overnight. Lettuce can be planted next, then radishes. Fall-bearing raspberries can be planted mid-March. Some varieties are: Heritage, Fall Gold, Fall Red, September, Pathfinder or Trailblazer. Garden centers will have small bare root trees and shrubs and bare-root roses on sale to tempt and tantalize you.

HG 4 I THE GAZETTE I SATURDAY, MAR 4, 2017

Go ahead and succumb. These can be planted from now through April. If you’re planting in March look for a time when we have predictions of three or four mild, pleasant days. Soak the roots overnight in a bucket to give plants a good start. Late March fertilize evergreens and deciduous trees.

LAWN

Core aerate the lawn or have it done by a qualified lawn service. Aeration can be done anytime during the growing season, but to get your lawn off to a good start do it in March. Before aeration make sure the soil is moist to get three-inch plugs. Leave plugs on the lawn.

If you had crabgrass problems last year apply a pre-emergent herbicide. However, once you’ve applied a preemergent you won’t be able to put down grass seed. The herbicide will block the seed from taking root.

TOOLS

Get your lawn mower ready. Clean and sharpen the blade, drain gas and oil, and replace the sparkplug. If your hand tools weren’t cleaned last fall, do it now. BY KEN MOON, SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Dear Ken: Which way should those plastic deflectors on the heat vents face? Into the room or to the wall? – Tom The quick answer is neither. I don’t like these gizmos because they nullify the original design of your heating system. The reason we put heat vents against the outside walls and under windows and patio doors is so that the warm air will wash over these cold surfaces. The air then rises up and out into the room and returns as cool air to the perimeter — setting up sort of a convection loop. If you short-circuit this scheme by diverting air into the center of the space with your deflectors, then the room ends up feeling colder than it should, as heat radiates from your body to the cold outside walls. That makes you run to the thermostat and turn it up as compensation for your perceived chill. So, lose the deflectors, except in one special case. If you have draperies directly over your heat vents — on both sides of a picture window, for example — then they will balloon out into the room when the furnace is on. Pretty ugly and inefficient. In that case, the deflectors are useful in pushing that air out from under the curtains. KEN MOON

Dear Ken: I have a two year old home. When my furnace kicks off, we get a very loud sound — like a vent slamming shut. Can this be fixed or quieted? – Sarah It sounds like the big, box-shaped ducts – called a plenum – connected to the furnace is flexing too much. When the blower shuts off, the air inside is suddenly depressurized, and as it collapses slightly, you can get that “drum head” metallic sound. Sometimes the fix is as simple as applying a few small dimples on the surface of the plenum with a ball peen hammer to distort it a little. If the sound is coming from one of the branch ducts, there may not be enough metal straps holding them to the

wood floor joists; or maybe the existing straps aren’t screwed extra tight.

Take the pledge and win prizes at changethecurrent.com.

Dear Ken: I’m getting too old to clean the gutters. Is there anything I can cover them with? – James Gutter screens, which are touted to be self-cleaning will work for a year or two — then they, too, will clog up with leaves and needles trapped in the mesh. There are gutter covers — like the Leaf Guard and Gutter Helmet brands, for example — that add a metal plate, which covers most of the trough, expect for a small slit. Because of its innate surface tension, the rainwater will curve around that lip and run into the gutters, while the leaves go overboard. These system work pretty well, but they do have a tendency to overflow a little during heavy rains or hail storms. Plus they can encourage ice dam formation on north exposures. But, overall, they are worth it, particularly on tall homes where manual gutter cleaning is a dangerous proposition. Dear Ken: We live in a ’50s home and want to remodel the kitchen — maybe take out some walls, change the cabinets and appliances. Do you have some ideas how we can plan the project and get started? – Ellie There are some great new software packages you should check out. For less than $20, you can get your hands on a floor planning program, complete with color schemes and furniture and appliance lay outs. You can add or delete walls and rearrange your cabinets as you desire. Check out Sweet Home 3D at Amazon.com. Two caveats, though, before you start. The plumbing arrangement is the hardest system to move and is usually best left in place; plus the interior walls in a 50’s house may or may not be load bearing. TAKE OUR ADVICE ADVICE

AMY DICKINSON

Dear Amy: I’ve been with my boyfriend for six months. He was living out of state and returned shortly before we started dating. He had dropped out of grad school and moved back in with his mother. He doesn’t have a car, and has significant student loan debt that he claims is preventing him from getting his own apart-

ment or vehicle. He has a job where he makes about the same as me, but I’m able to afford an apartment and car. I look down on him for this. I worked my way through college. If I could do it, he should be able to. He’s almost 30. His monthly student loan payment is about equal my rent, but I’m becoming concerned that there’s more than debt holding him back. He gets offended and says he feels judged or stressed out when I try to push him toward making positive changes. I’m beginning to doubt that I can ever rely on him as a life partner, and sometimes I feel that he is just so incompetent. I also wonder if I’m being too harsh, but it’s embarrassing for me to have to tell my family and friends that he still lives with his mom and doesn’t have a car. I haven’t expressed these feelings to him because he always reacts so sensitively, but I’m thinking about an ultimatum. What do you think? — Fed Up

ADVICE

Question: I’m worried that in the future, my family is going to have a hard time finding health insurance and affordDR. OZ AND DR. ROIZEN ing health care. How we can make sure we are protected? — Julia P., Garden City, Kan.

Dear Fed Up: You say you haven’t expressed your feelings to your boyfriend, but of course you have. He reacts defensively and feels judged, because you are judging him. If his student loans are equal to your rent and he makes the same as you do, then how would you suggest he secure an apartment and a car? Despite the fact that he is older than you are, you two are at different life stages. If he is truly “incompetent,” then you — a highly competent and independent person, will never think he is adequate. This imbalance isn’t good for either of you. An ultimatum would definitely force this issue, but don’t expect him to capitulate or cooperate.

Answer: Good health care coverage includes preventive health services, such as vaccinations and checkups as well as medical treatment. That’s why losing health insurance is a threat to you, your family and society. A healthy, well-cared-for population contributes more to the economy and isn’t a drain on public money or the resources of hospitals. What can you do? Speak up: Make your worries known to your representatives. Then take steps to make sure you and your family avoid preventable health problems. The American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 guidelines on protecting your heart also help you fight lifestyle-triggered cancers; reduce weightrelated digestive, mental and joint problems; beat diabetes; and stay happy! A study in the Journal of the American Heart Association estimates a savings of $41 billion a year if all Medicare patients achieved five of the seven steps, but with all savings considered, it could hit over $200 billion. 1. Stop smoking. 2. Get daily physical activity. 3. Upgrade your nutrition. 4. Maintain a body mass index below 30 (Google “calculate your body mass index”). 5. Control your blood pressure (aim for less than 120 over 85). 6. Control your cholesterol. 7. Control your glucose level (aim for less than 100). So let’s all meet the challenges to America’s health: Support accessible health-care coverage for everyone, and take responsibility for making sure you and yours are as healthy as possible.

ADVICE

Dear readers: My mother, the original Heloise (1919-1977), published a book titled “Hints for Working Women” in 1970! She was a big advocate for working women taking care of themselves. HINTS A solid hint from this book? FROM Straight from her mouth! “Take HELOISE an hour for yourself. Make sure hubby and kids will be okay — send them off to the park, the mall or to the movies, and then settle in. Draw a warm (not hot) bath and jump in, slather on your fave facial moisturizer, and relax. After several minutes, scrub your feet to revive them. This is a luxury, and a necessity. The new refreshed you will be all the better to care for your family!” I agree! So much is going on today, we all need and should have some alone time. Even if you have to go sit in the car, on the stoop or hide out in the bathroom. — Hugs, Heloise II Dear readers: Owning a pet is wonderful, and pet animals and humans can share a very special bond. Pets can provide love and companionship for people of all ages. Mine do! Pet owners generally get more exercise from walking a dog or playing with Fido or Floppy. Kids, especially only children, benefit from pet ownership. Pets teach kids empathy and how to be social and active, especially if they are fun creatures. And seniors can thrive! Dogs and cats help older folks around the house, while having the responsibility of caring for a four-legged friend gives them a sense of responsibly. Visit the shelter and adopt a four-legged friend. “Woof, woof ” from Chammy and Henry VIII, both adoptees. — Heloise Dear Heloise: I keep a set of fabric paints on hand. When I have a top or other piece of clothing with a stain on it, I put on a little paint to make a design over the stain. I can make a small flower (my favorite) or initials, or another small design. — Marjorie M., Reading, Pa. —
