What’s trending in your neighborhood? by hannah blick, hannah.blick@gazette.com
Trends might come and go, but home is always sweet. Some fads in home building might be here to stay, as function and creativity take precedence over square footage.
TIME ALONE, TOGETHER “Open concept, open concept, open concept — that is key when it comes to the main level living areas,” said Shelley La Judice, president and marketing director at The Marketing Group. “It’s a place for family to be together, but space for them to be doing their own thing.” La Judice and her agency work with local new home builders and see the trends ebb and flow. Builders are receiving more requests for personalized designs that incorporate thoughtful and creative hobby and work spaces. “People spend a lot of time in their homes, they want it designed around what they love,” she said. Flexible, practical space is also on trend for today’s new home owner. Functional storage and organization spots are musts, and drop zones inside the garage door provide for order in the chaos at the end of a long day. The same concept applies for custom-built charging stations that allow the entire household to manage charging cords and devices in a central location.
RETREAT TO AN OASIS Quality over quantity has become the mantra of new home builders and owners. “As the economy has changed, how people feel about their homes
has changed,” La Judice said. “Home builders now want smaller spaces, but with a better, more livable design.” But this doesn’t mean home builders want to sacrifice luxury, despite a shift in downsizing. In fact, it seems luxe is in. “Statement bathtubs are huge, regardless of the person’s price point,” La Judice said. “And statement lighting is the least expensive way to personalize your home. We’ve seen more chandeliers in master beds and baths recently.” Eric Helus, owner of The Glass Guru of Colorado Springs, said frameless showers have also grown in popularity. “It looks like floating glass; it’s a great way to streamline your design,” he said. “It takes away the metal hardware, and the maintenance is much easier without risk of rusting. Helus said The Glass Guru has also seen more requests for non-traditional, decorative glass that complements retreat rooms. This includes custom glass shelving, table tops and even twoway mirrors.
EASY EFFICIENCY A new home build is an opportunity to go green and keep some green in your pocket. Clean Energy Collective, in partnership with Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU), offers solar panels for purchase or rent to both home owners and renters to offset costs of home utilities. The 2,210 panels are located on a solar farm in Southeast Colorado Springs, off of Delta Drive.
ABOVE: open concept family rooms mix personalized and public space. RIGHT: save on utilities for your new home with an off-site solar panel.
Here’s how it works: your purchased or rented panel captures energy from the sun, and a correlating credit show up on your monthly bill from CSU. It’s good for the environment, it’s renewable and it can save you money each month, said Susanne Riis, marketing manager for the Clean Energy Collective. “Some HOAs don’t want you to put a solar panel on your roof, so this is a good option,” she said. “It’s off site on the solar farm, and you get the benefit of having zero maintenance.” Some opt to buy one or two panels; others purchase enough to zero out their monthly costs. Riis said home builders shouldn’t be scared away by the initial
investment of purchasing the panels, but factor it into their building costs and enjoy the long-term rewards of smaller monthly bills. La Judice said builders are improving their customization process and looking for more ways to be Energy Star compliable. “Homes today are so much more comfortable and efficient than 20 or even 5 years ago,” La Judice said. “Building standards have dictated that.” ❦

Comito Building and Design Teamwork at the center of custom builder’s process by heather mcdonnell, special to the gazette
In your mind, you can easily picture the home of your dreams. It has the perfect layout and the perfect finishes. Getting that home out of your head and into reality can be a complex process — but it doesn’t have to be. Comito Building and Design utilizes a “design-build” approach to creating custom homes, which works to take the stress out of what could be a trying experience for the homebuyer. So, what does design-build mean? In a word, it’s teamwork. The design-build approach involves the homeowner, builder and architect working together to design a home to a particular home site and budget, with all of the team members on the same page from the start. When clients come to Comito Building and Design, the team helps them select a home site if needed, and then establish the client’s goals, budget and ideas for the home. After this “discovery phase,” Comito then gets an
architect involved. Once the architect is involved the team then designs the home to the homeowner’s wishes, while focusing on the budgetary goals all along the way. A team of professionals working together means many eyes on the project from the beginning. Each is able to bring ideas, expertise and suggestions, finding ways to make a home more livable and efficient. Although quite a few people work on each project during this design phase, clients are not tasked with the job of juggling the roles of different professionals. Comito Building and Design handles all the coordination. “It creates a continuity of service,” said Claude Comito. “It’s working with the same group of people from start to finish who have heard the ideas, the visions, the whole style of the home from the beginning. And then it’s executed by those same people, giving clients a single

point of accountability.” “This design-build approach is a proven way to do a custom home very efficiently and at very reasonable cost.”

At The Newport Company, quality over quantity is more than just a catchy concept — it’s a core value and business model. For more than 35 years, The Newport Company has been leading Colorado Springs in the arena of custom-built, luxury homes. Though it only builds a few homes each year, this ensures a greater attention to detail, said owner Rick DeLesk. “We are a full-service operation with access to architects, interior designers and landscapers,” he said. “Our customers have the opportunity to purchase resources and items directly, at wholesale prices. Everything we do is with quality in mind.” Walk down any street in the prestigious Broadmoor area and see one of many Newport Company homes, built by skilled contractors who have worked with The Newport Company for generations. “We are proud to be building a new community in the Broadmoor proper,
the area just below the Broadmoor Hotel,” DeLesk said. “It’s a multiple-acre site divided into four lots, over three-quarters an acre in size each. These rick delesk lots should be available by this summer.” The Broadmoor, known for its grandeur and beauty, has maintained its value, despite market fluctuation. With mature trees, large lots and traditional architecture, a spot in the Broadmoor area is sure to be a restful home for generations to come. Meeting and exceeding the expectations of her customers has been a central focus of Debbie Reardon’s efforts for the last 20 years as a real estate professional in Colorado Springs. As a top-producing Realtor since 1994, she has won many awards and accolades but nothing has been more rewarding than the relationships she has built and the knowledge that she has given her clients a positive real estate experience. “I have been truly blessed in this business,” Reardon said. “I have developed tremendous relationships with clients, vendors, and colleagues.” Reardon has her late mother, Marie kelly and debbie reardon, courtesy of reardon partners
(also a Realtor), to thank for her successful business. “When we relocated to Colorado Springs we bought one of the first homes in a new development,” Reardon said. “When my mother came to visit, she quickly realized the potential of the local market and strongly encouraged me to get into real estate.” And, 20 years after entering the industry, Reardon is proud to welcome her daughter, Kelly Reardon, to The Reardon Partners Real Estate Team. switching to financial planning. As Reardon’s business continued to grow, Kelly happily accepted the offer to join the Reardon Partners Team as a thirdgeneration realtor. Coming from a large family of nine children, Reardon understands the value of relationships and believes it’s one of the aspects that has helped her build and sustain a business in such an exceptionally competitive field. “The greatest satisfaction I receive in the business is from providing good, solid services and having satisfied customers,” Reardon said. “Our team’s primary focus is on taking good care of our clients.” In fact, even with the high volume of transactions Reardon handles each year, she maintains a 100 percent customer service rating with a high percentage of her business coming from past client referrals. “I believe we have developed a solid system for selling homes that we have had great success with,” Reardon said. “When a client puts their faith and trust in me, I really take that to heart and leave nothing to chance.” From vendor programs, to assistance with preparing a home for sale, state of the art marketing, and many more processes through to closing, Reardon’s attention to detail ensures smooth transactions and satisfied customers. Since relocating from her hometown in New Jersey in 1990, with her husband of 36 years, Vince, Debbie has enjoyed watching Colorado Springs grow and has been blessed to sell many homes in the area. During her real estate career she has been credited with being the number one Realtor in the Northwest area of the city each year

since 2002, as well as ranked in the Top 8 of all El Paso County Realtors, each year since 2008, which effectively illustrates Reardon’s ability to sell homes throughout the Pikes Peak region. Her own personal experience with relocation has helped her to identify with the emotions that are involved with all types of moves — whether local or state-to-state. She understands that each family member is affected and she sincerely wants to make is as stress free as possible for everyone involved. “It’s been a great ride,” Reardon said and she wants to say “thank-you” to all of the people who have supported her business and helped her along the way. The real estate market continues to improve and she looks forward to great future business with her daughter working beside her. And when the Reardon family is not selling real estate, they know how to have a good time. Debbie loves to entertain a busy house full of out-ofstate relatives and in-town friends. The Reardons lead active, Colorado lifestyles with hikes and season tickets to Rockies games, though they also enjoy trips to Italy, where they can see the roots of their strong legacy. “I’m very family oriented,” she said. “I come from a big, Italian family, so we’re always together, eating and cooking and enjoying each other, and that’s how a home should be.” If you’re considering buying or selling, call Debbie or Kelly Reardon at The Platinum Group, Realtors for a private consultation at 719-9558525. The MacGuire Team
Free home buying service can be priceless by hannah blick, hannah.blick@gazette.com
You are ready to take the plunge — but knowing where to begin in buying or building a new home can be daunting. “Home buyers don’t mike macguire always understand that they don’t have to pay me,” said Realtor Mike MacGuire, “It’s a free benefit to them of having someone do their due diligence.” MacGuire said he wants to put buyers at ease and be seen as an advocate and someone to lean on as they search for a new home. Heavily involved with his customers throughout the build process, MacGuire knows the ropes from his 23 years of experience in real estate. “I understand the pros and cons of each area and which builders have good and bad reputations,” he said. “As I do with the sellers, I like to sit down and
have a conversation to find out what you are trying to achieve. What are your long-term goals?” MacGuire will also help establish a comfort budget range rather than a qualification budget to help stay within a budget that is comfortable for you. “It’s always better to work off a budget consistent with your lifestyle,” MacGuire said. “I am usually the one pulling in the reins. This is a major life event, there is no reason to rush, and I will be honest and direct with my buyers. I will help people be sure they are making good, solid decisions that are not going to adversely affect them in the future.” MacGuire doesn’t just sell homes, he consults and is not afraid to point out potential issues and ask tough questions. Ninety-three percent of his business comes from past clients and referrals. “I want to help home buyers become more knowledgeable as they walk through the home buying process,” he said. G.J. Gardner Homes
The 5 things you need to know about building a custom home courtesy of g.j. gardner homes
G.J. Gardner Homes is a locally owned builder with an incredibly responsive owner and staff. They seek to demystify the building process, educate customers about every aspect and clearly outline their commitment to delivering affordable, high-quality custom homes on time and on budget. You’ve got questions — G.J. Gardner has answers.
1. FLEXIBILITY Building a custom home can provide exactly what you want — from the site, to the floor plan, to the fixtures and finishes. Look for a builder who offers a diverse range of floor plans and design options to choose from, but who is also willing to let you use your own plan if you’d like.
2. AFFORDABILITY A custom home can be surprisingly affordable, and the final cost can be exactly what you would expect. You might have heard stories about hidden
extras and unclear promotions that put buyers over budget and delayed home completion time. You should insist on the total costs up front, with all customizations fully priced before signing a contract. Hint: Don’t forget to determine if the construction loan fees are included in your fixed price quote.
3. RELATIONSHIP Building a home might be the biggest investment you will make: G.J. Gardner knows this. With easy access to its staff during the entire home-building process, let them completely exceeded your expectations with their professionalism and personalized support.
4. LOCATION Choosing a location is a key consideration. G.J. Gardner builders are willing and able to tailor their construction methods to get the best out of your lot. Site conditions can be a

daunting unknown and typically present the largest potential for significant cost overruns. The best way to minimize, and possibly eliminate, this risk is to get the soil test and grading plan before signing a contract. Your builder can even handle this for you.
5. BUILD TIME & TR ACKING PROGRESS Your builder will actually invite your participation during construction

— both because it can be fun and give you peace of mind. You will be able to inspect your new home at the five major stages of the building process: base, frame, exterior enclosed, trim and substantial completion. You might be surprised at how quickly your home will be completed — and without sacrificing quality! With custom homes starting at $300,000, personalized service and over 60 floor plans to choose from, G.J. Gardner is a great fit for you! ❦

Many women do not feel safe answering the door when they are home alone, but that is not necessarily the best approach. Burglars ring door bells looking for an empty home — and no answer, to them, means no one is home and they should break in. Do not open the door, but do flash the lights or call out to scare off potential intruders.
HIGH RISK WINDOWS Windows hidden from a neighbor’s view are usually the highest risk for breaking and entering. If you’re installing window sensors, be sure and arm your windows with both opening and breakage sensors for maximum protection.
GAR AGE DOOR SAFETY Burglars have figured out how to use a wire to hook the release rope on a roll-up garage door, allowing easy entry. Protect your home by cutting the release rope so the door cannot be entered without a code or remote.

Wasson Academic Campus. The ECHS program offers up to 60 college credits, or the equivalent of a two-year associate’s degree, for FREE! It’s no secret that the average cost of an in-state, public college education is running upwards of $20,000 per year; double that price tag for a private institution. Bottom line: college isn’t cheap! This news is discouraging when considering that there is a need for more college graduates for the U.S., to keep pace with developing countries and meet the demands of a world yet to be imagined. Partnering with Pikes Peak Community College and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, ECHS students can embark on a journey that will challenge them and prepare them for

a bright future. “By courageously choosing to experience high school differently, our students have the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree or 60 credit hours towards their bachelor’s degree,” said D11
ECHS Principal Aurora Umana-Arko.
Integrating the high school and college experience may make it seem the ECHS method is aimed only at academically gifted students; however, ECHS is appropriate for a wide variety
of students. Research shows that average, underachieving, and wellprepared high school students are all inspired by the rigor, depth, and intensity of college work. Students in D11’s ECHS will not be placed into a class for which they are not ready or able to pass. ECHS’s focus is to create a smooth transition into postsecondary education. By offering the opportunity for students to graduate from the ECHS with both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree, this method is opening doors for low-income families, first-generation college students, English language learners, and others who are so often underrepresented in higher education. It is one way Colorado Springs School District 11 is preparing every student for a world yet to be imagined. For more information on D11’s Early College High School, visit EarlyCollege.D11.org. ❦
