Equine Cremation
Most suggest that they are “gentle” or “respectful” but I would ask for a recommendation before I hired anyone to do such a delicate service. I googled ‘equine cremation’ in my area. I found one nearby. Shocked. I’ve never, ever even thought about it. Lo and Behold, there is a service nearby. So, google and learn what services are in your area. I never want to see a rendering truck in my driveway – and hopefully it will never be necessary.
The Homeward Bound Promise Let’s Be Brave

CREMATION I found out that most equine cremations are done in a small cat/dog furnace. So, you want to ask this difficult question, “Can you cremate the whole horse?” Some equine crematoriums tout that they have the ability to cremate an entire horse. Obviously, this is an From the blog important question to ask. Another way to know “Horse and Man” for sure is to ask to inspect their equipment. Then you will know whether the whole horse will fit in the crematory. Some facilities offer the option of allowing the owner to watch the cremation. They do this because notoriously, crematoriums are not always trustworthy to cremate your pet and/or give you the ashes of your own pet – if you know what I mean. So reputable crematoriums offer this service.

P.S. ~ Here at Homeward Bound,, we have a crematory that is large enough to accommodate the entire horse. We provide a private cremation for each animal, with the remains returned in an urn of your choice. We work with a reputable transport company who will pick up your friend from any location that can be accessed with his truck and trailer.

ripe old age Age equivalents for cats and dogs Cat and dog owners know that the responsibility of caring for their favorite felines and preferred pooches changes as those animals age. But owners may not know just what constitutes an “aging” pet. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that determining the age equivalent of pets is not as simple as “1 human year = X cat/dog years.” In fact, making such determinations is especially difficult with dogs, whose age equivalents depend on the size of the dog. But the AVMA does calculate pet age in human terms, and the following are the equivalents on which they tend to rely.
Cats
Cat years 7 10 15 20
Human years 45 58 75 98
Dogs (small-medium) Dog years 7 10 15 20
Human years 44 – 47 56 – 60 76 – 83 96 – 105
Dogs (large-very large) Dog years 7 10 15 20
Human years 50 – 56 66 – 78 93 – 115 120

keep your pets safe at home Lost pets can cause heartbreak for many families. If your pet is lost: Contact the local Humane Society and your neighborhood animal shelters. Someone might have delivered your pet to their door. Also, place fliers with a photo and description of the pet around your neighborhood. Start your search by heading north — some experts think 75 percent of all lost dogs will travel north.
Contact any veterinary hospitals in your area. If your pet was injured, whoever found it might have taken it to their veterinarian.
Here are some ways to keep your pets safe: Prevention is always the best course of action. Keep your dog in a well-fenced area. Never allow animals to roam. Instruct children on how to be responsible for their pets. Keep the doors and gates latched. When leaving home with your pet always have dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier.
Spay and neuter all pets. Spayed and neutered dogs and cats are less likely to wander off in comparison to un-neutered animals.
All pets should have an identification tag on the collar. The tag should list the animal’s name and your name and phone number. Familiarize your dog with its surroundings. Allow the dog to walk around the yard and develop it as his territory. Cats should be kept indoors at all times.
Consider having your pets microchipped. This is a procedure that can be done by your veterinarian. A small microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected under the skin between your pet’s back. If the collar and tag are lost, the microchip can be detected at an animal shelter or veterinary clinic. The information from the microchip can be used to identify who owns the pet.

the specialist’s spot Vet specialists take your pet’s care to a new level of success By Mike Bauer, DVM, DACVS
Veterinary specialization has become an integral part of today’s state of the art animal health care. General veterinarians provide the most vital care for your pet’s ongoing health and longevity, but specialists offer unique advantages when complex problems arise. Virtually all of the specialties available in human medicine also exist in veterinary medicine. The days of family physicians repairing a human’s broken leg or torn ACL seem long gone. Similar expectations and expertise now exist in veterinary medicine. Specialists typically undergo four additional years of intense training following veterinary school in the form of internship and residency programs. Once all criteria are met, the doctor must pass an extensive multi-day examination to become a “Board Certified” specialist in his or her field of study. Specialization allows doctors to focus on one area: for us, that happens to be small animal orthopedic surgery. Because of this focus on orthopedic surgery, our board certified surgeons acquire extensive experience in a specific area. For example, our surgeons have repaired thousands of canine ACL tears, and with this experience comes expertise. This expertise allows for a shorter time under anesthesia and in surgery, which leads to

less time in the hospital for you and your pet. Each month, a plethora of veterinary journals are published, and it is virtually impossible to keep up with the constant information explosion in all areas of veterinary medicine. By focusing our attention on one area, specialists are able to stay abreast of the exciting new research and emerging technologies. Specialization also affords access to sophisticated equipment. Training, practice, skill development, experience and expertise are vital to utilizing today’s high-tech tools. For instance, we perform arthroscopic surgery, computerized orthopedic planning and CT scans every day in our specialty hospital. We utilize advanced equipment, which leads to more precise diagnoses, less invasive procedures, improved post-operative comfort and more successful outcomes. If your pet has a serious medical or surgical problem the question you should ask is, “If I had this condition, would I see a specialist or my family doctor?”

have pets, will travel While pets are beloved members of the family, they are often left behind when their owners travel, simply because many owners don’t know how to travel with their furry friends in tow. These pet travel tips will help keep you (and your pets) calm, allowing you both to enjoy the ride.
What to bring:
• Flea/tick prevention treatments and other medications your pet might be taking • Updated I.D. tags for traveling, complete with information on how to reach you while you’re on the trip • Clean-up bags and/or pooper scoopers • Food and water bowls — collapsible, light, leak proof and long lasting are best! • A photo in case your pet gets lost • Tennis ball or a favorite toy for tossing at rest stops • Using a carrier? Make sure your name, phone number and email are clearly labeled.
Tips for a smooth trip
You might want to ask your vet for sedating and/or anti-nausea medications. Make sure you do a check-up with your vet before the trip as well. Before you place your pet in a carrier, attached his collar, leash and harness. You don’t want to risk losing him during a struggle to attach these items at the airport or a rest stop. Either bring your pet’s usual food, or make sure it will be available at your destination. Be sure to bring a few meal-sized portions for before you arrive. If your pet sleeps with a special bed or bedding, make space for these items so he feels at home. The scent of home will comfort him.
What should be in a pet first aid kit: • • • • • • • • • • •

PETACULAR 2014/2015 PET DIRECTORY
Extra items for in the car:
• Seat covers for seats • Portable litter box — get them used to it before the trip • Favorite chew toy or pillow from home
Going on a plane?
• Check ahead with the airline to understand its pet policies. • Airlines require animals be at least eight weeks old and fully weaned before traveling. • Fly direct, when possible. • Only pets in good health and behavior are often allowed to fly. • Bring copies of current medical and vaccination records from your vet. • To avoid temperature extremes, fly at night in the summer and during the day in the winter months. • Contact the airline to reserve a space for your pet as early as possible and reconfirm within 36 hours of departure. • Feed your pet within four hours of check-in and keep water on hand to hydrate them while waiting for boarding. • Travel with plastic, not wire carriers, as no part of the animal should protrude from the cage. • Be sure the carrier fits the pet. Your pet should be able to stand up and turn. • Carriers must have a solid, leak-proof floor, covered with a towel or other absorbent lining in case of accidents.

mighty dog mutt balls Ingredients: • • • • • • •
1 cup quinoa 2 cups beef broth or water 1/2 cup natural peanut butter 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey 2 teaspoons ground flaxseed 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Directions:
1. In a small pot bring the quinoa and 2 cups bone broth to a boil, cover and simmer for 18 – 20 minutes. Remove from heat. You don’t need to drain the quinoa. 2. Mix the remaining ingredients in a medium size bowl. 3. Mix in the warm (not hot) quinoa. The warmth will slightly melt the peanut butter and help everything combine. 4. Place in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to chill and firm up if needed. 5. Use a 1" cookie scooper or teaspoon to make the balls and place onto parchment paper lined baking sheet. 6. Place in the freezer until they are completely firm. You can use plain water when cooking the quinoa but the bone (beef) broth is healthier and tasty. Be sure to use homemade or, if purchasing, check the label to make sure the ingredients are safe for dogs. Will keep in the refrigerator up to one week and in the freezer for up to three months.

critter care Treat pet periodontal disease effectively at the clinic and at home By Russell Welfare, DVM
By their third birthday, 85 percent of pets will develop periodontal disease. The most common clinical condition in adult dogs and cats, the disease is completely preventable by developing a simple care routine for your pet’s teeth and gums. Evidence of periodontal disease often appears gradually and subtly, but the disease has been linked to many long-term problems. It is important to address any developing dental issues as soon as they are noticed.
Signs of dental disease
Problems caused by gum and tooth disease in pets can be difficult and expensive to treat, but if noticed and cared for early on, they can often be completely avoided. Frequently removing dental plaque and tartar that forms on teeth can keep many problems from even developing. If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, schedule an appointment to have your cat or dog examined for dental disease: • Bad breath • Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar • Loose teeth • A sensitive or painful mouth • Drooling or dropping food from the mouth • Bleeding from the mouth • Loss of appetite or loss of weight (this combination can result from diseases of many organs, and early veterinary exam is important) • Red, swollen, painful gums • Infection at the gum line or roots of the teeth • Gum loss or bone loss around the teeth • Tooth loss or broken teeth • Hole (Fistula) formation from the oral to the nasal cavity • Damage to other organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys

Treating periodontal disease in pets starts with a thorough, oral exam and For more information or professional dental cleaning from your to have your pet treated veterinarian. A professional dental for periodontal or other cleaning should include: diseases, please contact: • Pre-anesthetic exam: This North Powers Animal Hospital allows your vet to minimize the risk 5470 Powers Center Point #100 associated with anesthesia. Today’s 719-282-1222 advanced anesthetic protocols www.northpowersanimalhospital.com allow us to safely anesthetize and recover many patients, even older ones. • Anesthesia monitoring: Monitoring your pet’s vital signs (temperature, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and others) helps ensure safety and allows your veterinarian to adjust the anesthesia as needed. • Dental radiographs: Radiographs (X-rays) of the teeth allow your veterinarian to evaluate below the gum line for any abnormalities that cannot be detected during an oral examination. • Scaling and polishing: This removes the tartar and smoothens the surface of the teeth to slow down the recurrence of bacterial accumulation and tartar. Scaling under the gum line is one of the most important steps in a dental exam. • Fluoride treatment: Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and decrease future plaque formation. Most dogs and cats will need regular dentals (just like people) as tartar recurs. By addressing dental care at home you can slow the progression of the disease and often the frequency of dental cleanings. Always discuss home care with your veterinarian. Some methods might be more effective or feasible for your pet, but the more consistent you are, the better the longterm results. With a little routine care, you can extend the length and quality of your pet’s life. Home dental care for your pet should include: • Teeth brushing: Just like people, this is the best way to slow tartar buildup • Oral rinses: Helps decrease the bacterial count in the mouth • Proven dental diets: Be careful, many “dental” diets are not proven to decrease tartar • Dental chews: Additives in these chews decrease bacteria and reduce plaque on the teeth • Water additives: Decrease bacteria in the mouth

tips for hiking with your dog 1. Follow the rules of the trail. Do not take your
dog on a trail where dogs are forbidden or take him off-leash when the rules call for on-leash dogs only.
2. Carry enough clean water for you and your dog. Drinking out of mountain streams can give your dog (and you) some nasty parasites. Purchase a soft, collapsible dog bowl that is lightweight and convenient for hikes.
3. Make sure your dog is fit enough for the length of hike and type of trail you are planning to tackle, and always take a good trail map.
4. Always clean up after your dog. Bring plenty of
potty bags in case more than one cleanup is needed.
5. Make sure you bring basic first aid materials for humans and canines alike. Always bring a cell phone in case of an injury that leaves you or your dog immobile. It is always best to hike in groups.
6. Move to the right of the trail when passing another hiker, and restrain your dog. Not everyone wants to meet and greet your four-legged buddy!
7. Teach your dog to pay attention to you when passing other hikers or animals. Bring a toy or treats to gain your dog’s attention while passing another dog or person.
8. Use the right equipment. If you know your dog pulls while walking, switch to a harness or “Gentle Leader.”

Grade A: This dog is extremely well behaved. Congratulations! Grade B: Dogs in this category are typically wonderful family dogs with a few rough edges. This dog could easily move to the “A” Group with some training. Grade C: While these dogs need training, frequently they don’t receive it because their annoying behaviors are “just not bad enough.” It’s unfortunate because “C” dogs can improve quickly and bring great joy and happiness to families. With training the owner can be assured the behaviors will only get better- not worse. Grade D: This category of dogs has issues that can be serious if not addressed soon. Owners of these dogs are constantly being annoyed and irritated by their behavior, and are beginning to think, “Something has got to be done.” Fortunately, dogs can change their behavior quite easily, so these owners should seek help immediately. Grade F: Most people with dogs that rate an “F” are desperate for change, but many don’t know what to do. These dogs are out of control and serious problems can arise if they are not trained. Owners of these dogs sometimes consider putting them down. However the vast majority of dogs can be saved with training, eliminating the owner’s grief and guilt.
