SHRUBS – Versatile Performers in the Garden BY EILEEN TULLY COLORADO MASTER GARDENER
Shrubs are the backbone of the garden. They serve many functions and add beauty and value to your home. A shrub is a multi-stem woody plant that is less than 15 feet tall. Landscape architects often call shrubs the “walls” of the garden, with trees as the ceiling and ground cover as the floor. Evergreen shrubbery will give you year round color, while deciduous shrubs provide seasonal interest and flower and fruit displays. Shrub Functions: Privacy --Taller shrubs can be planted as a windbreak in new and undeveloped properties. In other situations they can be planted as visual barriers to screen unwanted views and create privacy. These are usually evergreen shrubs such as Juniper (Juniperus sp.). A shrub border, or hedge, is less expensive than a fence but requires more maintenance. Privet (Ligustrum vulgare v. ‘Cheyenne’) is a good
example of hedge shrubbery. Foundation Plants – these shrubs impart a solid feeling to the home and break up the stark right angles of house and ground. They visually anchor a building to a site. Usually evergreen shrubs are used here to provide texture and foundation coverage year round. Boxwood (Buxus microphylla v.’koreana’) and euonymus (Euonymus alatus) are good examples of foundation plants but there are many more. Accent Plants – can be evergreen or deciduous. They are planted next to a prominent landscape feature to add emphasis to the feature such as a sign, boulder or sculpture. Shrubs placed on either side of a doorway or entry path are another example of how to use accent plants. Dwarf Alberta Spruce imparts a more formal feel while Dwarf American Cranberry (Virburnum trilobum v. ’compactum’) is colorful, lush and casual.
Specimen Plants – are strategically placed to create a focal point. Deciduous shrubs, especially those with colorful foliage, interesting bark, fruit or berries, are excellent performers in this category. Forsythia is a welcome sign of spring, Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens v. ‘Annabelle’) is a summer favorite and in late summer, Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) puts on a beautiful show. Mass Planting – creates a landscape statement. For example, shrubs grouped together in an island garden add dimension to the landscape. Many of the plants mentioned above can be used as mass plantings. For seasonal color planting several knockout roses in an island garden adds drama to an area. Ground Cover Shrubs – are 3’ or lower and often have a spreading habit. They contribute significantly to the overall landscape design and can be
used to cover large portions of planting beds. These shrubs are effective at erosion control. They have a threedimensional appeal, serve as wildlife habitat and reduce the amount of turf in the landscape. Creeping Western sandcherry (Prunus besseyi) a Plant Select of 2000 will do well in our area. Ground cover shrubs and mass planting are used in the ‘repetition’ principle of landscape design. This principle states that plants of similar size, shape, color and texture are repeated to easily lead the eye through the landscape. Simplicity and serenity are the result. When you go about the selection process learn the mature size and growth rate of the plants you are considering to purchase. Foundation plantings should be easy to maintain and not require excessive pruning. Also, you might want to consider adding some shrubs that produce edible fruit
and shelter for wildlife. There’s so much you can do with the right shrubs even in a small garden. Growing conditions in Colorado are challenging with late frosts in spring, desiccating winds and thin soil. But dry, sunny days, cool nights make plant diseases relatively rare and prolong bloom times on many flowering shrubs. And, oh, the spectacular colors! Dear Ken: I’ve seen lots of advertising for a special brand of electric heater. It’s a little expensive, and I was just wondering what you thought of it? – Cora I think you can spend Ken Moon less and get results just as good. If you think about it, the room you want to add heat to loses a specific number of BTU’s on any particular day, and it takes a precise number of electric watts to satisfy that loss. Whether you get them from an expensive or low priced unit is irrelevant. At the home center, there are two styles you might what to consider. A fan-driven, ceramic space heater or a quiet oil filled, radiator style model. The former will heat the room up a little more quickly, but the liquid filled one will provide more even heat over a longer time frame. One precaution, though. Electric heaters consume gobs of electricity. They can load a circuit up to its maximum allowable amperage in no time. That means that you won’t be able to use other
appliances in that room—maybe a lamp or two, but that’s it. If that’s inconvenient, an electrician can run another dedicated circuit into that part of the house. Dear Ken: Could you give me the pros and cons of asphalt and concrete driveways? I’m thinking of replacing my concrete one, and want to know which way to go. – Mark The choice depends, to a great deal, on what’s underneath. If yours is bad enough to rip out and replace, I’ll bet you have expansive soil on your lot. This is the clay-laced stuff most common in the foothill areas along the Front Range. When it gets wet, it swells up to such an extent that it can lift concrete into a new shape, replete with cracks and gaps. Concrete is a very brittle material after it cures, so it doesn’t do well when it’s disturbed. Asphalt, on the other hand, is a little more flexible and so can shift around somewhat with impunity. It, too, can crack, but these are more easily filled-and look better afterwards--than similar concrete blemishes. However, asphalt is the more porous material,
so it requires a bi-annual seal coat to fill the pores; and it’s more vulnerable to scrapes and gouges from snow removal (although, on the other hand, snow will melt faster on this darker surface). One way to help with the decision is to get your hands on the builder’s soil report for your site. If it indicates a relatively high expansion potential for the underlying soil, the more flexible asphalt material may be the way to go. Dear Ken: I bought a new furnace with a two stage gas valve and variable sped fan. The guy told me to run the fan all the time, but my power bill has really gone up. What do you think? – Jerry Unless there’s a specific reason to run the fan continuously--like cold and hot spots to even out--I wouldn’t do it. For instance, some folks use their basement family room to watch TV in the evenings, but it’s always colder than the upstairs. In that case--and for those few hours only--running the fan can moderate the temperatures on each levels. The same is true (in reverse) with air conditioning in the summertime.
Otherwise, you should take advantage of the variable speed blower and its computer to provide just the right amount of circulation to satisfy the thermostat. Dear Ken: I have a couple of broken fence posts. How can I get the concrete footings out of the ground without digging a huge hole? – Jan You could try a trick I’ve seen used on those pesky evergreen bushes with their complicated root systems that are past their prime and need to be removed. Call a towing company. They may be able to winch the post and its concrete footing out of the ground. Before you do that, however, ask a fence company to give you a bid on two steel posts on either side of the old wood one. Then they then can strap the fence cross members to the new posts, totally bypassing the broken ones. Ken Moon is a home inspector in the Pikes Peak region. For the first time in six years, Energy Star certification, a standard seal of approval for energy efficiency, has been expanded to include another major household appliance. Clothes dryers, perhaps the last of the major household appliances to be included in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program, became available in 45 Energy Star models starting Presidents’ Day weekend, according to the EPA. “Dryers are one of the most common household appliances and the biggest energy users,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. While washing machines have become 70 percent more energy-efficient since 1990, dryers — used by an estimated 80 percent of American households — have continued to use a high amount of energy, the agency says. The Energy Star program is designed to help consumers’ help save money and protect the environment by curbing energy consumption. “Refrigerators were the dominant energy consumer in 1981. Now dryers are the last frontier in the home for radical energy conservation,” said Charles Hall, senior manager of product development for Whirlpool. Energy Star-certified dryers include gas, electric and compact models. Manufacturers offering them include LG, Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag and Safemate. All of the energy-efficient models include moisture sensors to ensure that the dryer does not continue running after the clothes are dry, which reduces energy consumption by around 20 percent, the EPA says. In addition, two of the Energy Star-approved
models — LG’s EcoHybrid Heat Pump Dryer (model DLHX4072) and Whirlpool’s HybridCare Heat Pump Dryer (model WED99HED) — also include innovative “heat pump” technology, which reduces energy consumption by around 40 percent more than that, the EPA and manufacturers say. Heat-pump dryers combine conventional vented drying with heat-pump technology, which recycles heat. The technology, long common in much of Europe, is similar to that used in air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Although Energy Star models can cost roughly $600 more than comparable standard models, Hall said the higher cost is more than balanced out by energy savings and up to $600 rebates offered by government and utility incentive programs. But the real impact will be felt once the transition to Energy Star models is complete. According to the EPA, if all the clothes dryers sold in the U.S. this year were Energy Starcertified, it would save an estimated $1.5 billion in annual utility costs and prevent yearly greenhouse-gas emissions equal to more than 2 million vehicles. To earn the Energy Star label, products must be certified by an EPA-recognized third party based on rigorous testing in an EPA-recognized laboratory. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — How many remotes does it take to watch television, stream Netflix or record your favorite show on DVR? The Ray Super Remote wants to declutter your coffee table and become the central nervous system of all of your home entertainment systems. The touchscreen device, released Tuesday, is designed to control TVs, cable boxes, DVRs, video game consoles and Internet streaming players such as Roku and Apple TV. What’s more, it runs on software that learns viewers’ preferences so it can list programs suited to personal interests. “As we looked at ways to reimagine TV, it seemed like the remote control needed the most help,” says David Skokna, CEO of New York-based Ray Enterprises. “We think we have a big opportunity to do something magical.” Priced at $199, the remote won’t be released until May or June, but pre-orders are being accepted online at http://www.ray.co . It requires a Wi-Fi system and pay-TV boxes to work properly. This isn’t the first attempt to build a smarter remote control. Logitech and a few other electronics companies have been making universal remote controls for years. More recently, a variety of mobile apps have been offering ways to turn
smartphones and tablets into multipurpose remote controls. After nearly three years developing his device, Skokna is counting on the Ray remote’s versatility and intelligence to stand out from the other options on the market. The Ray remote controls more than 200,000 devices and can run applications that will enable it to control other Internet-connected home appliances, such as Google’s Nest thermostat. The search and recommendation features are set up to eliminate the need to spend a lot of time looking for content. Users can tell the remote what kinds of programming interests them, such as soccer or comedy, so shows fitting those categories are automatically highlighted on the nearly 5-inch screen. The remote’s battery lasts for about 10 days, and can be easily recharged in a power station that doubles as a holding tray. The biggest question facing the Ray remote may be this: How many people are so frustrated with juggling multiple remote controls that they will be willing to spend $199 on another device?
