PROFILE: ADD STAFF
‘Big small business’ still going strong after 30 years BY LESLIE MASSEY ■ SPRINGSJOBS.COM
It all started with a volunteer job in a school library. There, Cari Shaffer helped a harried librarian organize a cadre of parent volunteers to make the library run smoothly. Shaffer enjoyed giving people tasks to match their interests and strengths; she discovered her niche. In 1984, Shaffer founded ADD STAFF, a Colorado Springs staffing company specializing in administrative, accounting, engineering, medical, technical and professional arenas. Thirty years later, the company is still going strong. That success has everything to do with Shaffer’s high quality staff, she says. “There are 18 of us, and our average tenure is 10 years. That’s huge corporate knowledge. Plus, ten of the staffers hold the Certified Staffing Professional designation from the American Staffing Association. Our bench strength is probably deeper and broader than any other staffing company in Southern Colorado,” Shaffer says. In an industry that often has a lot of “churn and burn,” it’s unusual for a staff to have so much experience. Why have ADD STAFF employees stuck around so long? Because Shaffer has been lucky enough to hire people who dedicate themselves to their jobs and their coworkers. “I’ve tried to hire smarter than me, train them to be better than me, and then stay out of their way,” Shaffer says. Although she admits she’s not always successful at getting out of the way, the formula seems to have worked. Even through the tough economic times of the past few years, ADD STAFF has stayed in the black and continued making charitable contributions in the community. Shaffer says her staff is dedicated to satisfying client-employers’ needs, working hard to place the right people in the right jobs so that everyone is happy with the results. Part of that is treating everyone with respect. “Success is built on having a head for business
and a heart for people,” Shaffer says. “I remind my coworkers to imagine walking in the shoes of our candidates and our client-employers, but not so long as to get blisters, because it’s important to remain objective in our decision making.” ADD STAFF became a family business in its 10th year, when Shaffer’s son, Kelly, and husband, Larry, joined the team. Larry works part-time in a support capacity, while Kelly has spent 21 years learning the ins and outs of every facet of the business. When Shaffer decides to retire in a few years, Kelly will take over the business. His vision for the company may involve expanding the business to branch offices along the Front Range. The company is already bigger than a lot of people expected it to be, Shaffer says. “Because of the staff’s accomplishments, we have become a big small business,” Shaffer says. “We want to be a big company in terms of staffing capacity, but we don’t want to lose our personal touch. To our clientemployers that rely on us, we want to maintain our strong attitude of service so we can stay friendly, caring and listen.” Listening is an important skill when working with employers, interviewing candidates and checking references. The staff has to understand a clientemployer’s culture in order to place the right person,” Shaffer says. The staff takes care to place candidates in environments where they can thrive. “It isn’t just about placing a person with the best hard skills, which you can test for or reference for,” Shaffer says. “You also need to place them with their soft skills, where they’re going to feel more comfortable and where the company’s going to feel confident with that person.” ADD STAFF excels at that type of placement because of its longstanding relationships with local businesses. “ADD STAFF represents a huge base of candidates,” Shaffer says.
“With over 30 years of experience with Pikes Peak region employers, we really get to know what different companies need.” Through the years, despite recessions, growing pains and a little bit of trial and
error, Shaffer is still having the good time that started with that volunteer library job. “It has been so much fun,” Shaffer says. “I feel very, very lucky to have started ADD STAFF. And I feel even

This position reports to the Revenue Manager and is responsible for analyzing and interpreting medical records to ascertain medical coding, providing complete and timely diagnostic information to regulatory agencies, and reviewing data to maximize revenue within regulatory guidelines. Must be a certified coder (CPC – Certified Professional Coder preferred) and have a minimum of three years hands-on medical coding experience with electronic health record systems. Directs personnel engaged in inspection and testing activities to ensure continuous control over materials, facilities, and products. Plans, promotes, and organizes training related to product quality and reliability. May investigate and adjust customer complaints regarding quality. Coordinates and calibrates gauges, measuring instruments, and testing equipment using master gauges or master parts, and inspection accuracy of new gauges and instruments for conformance. Maintains calibration program. Conducts first piece, ISIR, PPAP inspection on parts. Maintains raw material and subcontract certification documentation. Leads division ISO certification program and compliance including scheduling internal and external audits and record keeping. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
