Hollywood-level luxury can be yours, right here in the Broadmoor neighborhood SPONSORED FEATURE
Can you imagine yourself a modern-day Jay Gatsby? Indeed, the most frequently used noun in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s mostfamous novel is the word “house,” which appears no less than 95 times within its pages. That’s because the houses the characters live in are so closely tied to their identities. Make no mistake — this architecturally sound work of contemporary artistry seems as though its primary reason for existence is to
impress and entertain. One look at this marvel of a home, currently being offered for $2,900,000, will have you imagining legendary gatherings with esteemed guests, friends, and family. Despite its location in the Broadmoor, a stroll through this house will have you feeling as though you’ve been transported to the Hollywood Hills. The resort-style amenities include everything from a heated swimming pool with adjacent
hot tub to a tennis court. And although the luxuries and amenities give it that Hollywood feel, the open floorplan and vast spaciousness of the house evoke the expansive landscape, wide-open spaces and spectacular views of Colorado’s timeless scenery. The MLS reports that it was built in 1957, but don’t let that fool you. The original house was expanded to three times its original size with additions built

in the 1990s, and then was entirely gutted and remodeled in 2015 creating a dazzling one-of-a-kind structure. There are some echoes of Frank Lloyd Wright in its design, but by and large, this house — spanning an incredible 8,732 square feet and containing four levels, six bathrooms and five bedrooms — is unapologetically contemporary and modern. After entering the electrical gated entrance, you notice that the entire 2.73 acre property is fully enclosed and secure, leading you to feel as though you’ve left the outside world behind. Rounding the circular drive you are struck by the
majesty of the contemporary stucco, steel and glass exterior. The serene setting offers both a private escape and the convenience of not being too far from a hiking trail, fire station, hospital, plus schools and a shopping center — so you feel far from reality, but close to necessities. The property also offers a greenhouse large enough to satisfy even the greenest thumb, three water features and a detached heated four-car garage, complete with a half bathroom. And, that’s even not counting the attached twocar garage. Do you have a car collection?
If not, maybe you’ll start one. Upon entering the front door, you’re greeted by the entryway’s beautiful tilework, and a two-tiered slate fountain that echoes relaxing bubbling water sounds throughout the atrium. Then, you’re awed by the breathtaking 36 footlong atrium, which opens to all the major living areas and serves as a dramatic focal point for the home. The 24 foothigh peaked glass ceiling allows glorious sunlight to bathe the entire area. As you walk across the new oak floors, you can’t help but marvel at how the geometric steel and glass design aspects contrast,
yet perfectly frame the beautiful natural scenery outside the home. The large living room features three symmetrical coved ceilings, and as a dramatic centerpiece, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace wall with sculpted steel gas logs created by artist Doyle Svenby. The entire area is naturally lit by a wall of stackable sliding-glass doors that part to create a 20-foot opening onto the patio area for entertaining. The equally ample dining room mirrors the living-room layout and coved ceilings, and shares the opposite-side view of the floor-to-ceiling fireplace wall from

The kitchen area measures 30 feet by 18 feet, and simply must be seen to be believed. One could imagine the filming of a cooking show happening in this kitchen! include: a stainless Thermadore gas range with four burners, a griddle and grill, a Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer, a beverage cooler, two wall ovens, a microwave, two dishwashers, and a Thermadore warming drawer. Between the dining room and kitchen, four gorgeous pendant lights are suspended above the counter seating and an abundance of cabinets. The main-level bathroom is in a sleek black motif, with a mosaic-tiled floor and a metallic-sheen tiled shower. You’ll eventually realize that all the bathrooms in this home are their own respective works of art — all unique with regard to design and amenities. A spacious family room with 16 foot-high ceilings is sure to be the sight of many memorable gatherings. For cooler months it features a Travertine fireplace with gas logs, and has media capabilities with an included drop-down wide screen, audio visual equipment and a projector. For the warmer months, it also has a set of stackable sliding-glass doors that create another 20-foot opening to the patio. Standing in this room, you can easily imagine memorable summer afternoons entertaining guests — the way it opens up into the pool area almost resembles a top-notch resort. To add
to that, there’s even a sleek wet bar adjoining the room with a wine chiller and dishwasher for celebratory libations. Walking from the family room onto the expansive 40-foot by 30-foot patio, you notice the uniquely designed gas fireplace, and gorgeous in-ground heated swimming pool powered by a recently installed industrial-grade heating system. The pool also has a raised deck area with a porcelain-tiled floor, and on the other side of the pool is a new built-in hot tub with Batu wood decking. There’s not just one upper level to this home, but two upper levels situated on opposing sides of the atrium. Located on the first upper level, the stately office with sitting area has a vaulted and peaked wood ceiling, refinished hardwood floors and a three-sided gas log fireplace. The desk area offers a plethora of bookshelves and built-ins. From the office, a hallway with hardwood floors and peaked skylights leads you to the guest/family wing. This is the portion of the house that remains from the original home. All recently updated, it contains two guest bedrooms with impressive mountain and city views. One of the bedrooms offers direct access to the bath. The other bedroom has a vaulted ceiling
and a sliding glass door to a covered deck. There is also a guest suite with a private bath, which features a jetted tub with shower head, tiled floors and vanity with a quartz countertop. The level is completed by a spacious laundry room, all nicely updated with tile floors and a newer washer and dryer included. The second upper level is entirely occupied by the master bedroom/bath suite with private access via a majestic staircase that offers a sweeping view of the main floor and outside views through the atrium windows that just get better and better as you climb. The master bath also boasts a huge, walk-in steam shower with three showerheads, and a sleek suspended quartz vanity with two sinks, and a skylight. Adjacent to the bathroom,
The expected impact of the ‘Silver Tsunami’ on the housing market COURTESY OF THE PLATINUM GROUP, REALTORS
While most baby boomers are still a decade or more away from retirement living, the members of that generation are poised to play a key role in shaping the future housing market. Edging away from clichéd senior housing, baby boomers appear to have a trending preference for urban lifestyles, convenience and entertainment. Therefore, developers are closely watching these trends to plan future projects accordingly. With the so-called “Silver Tsunami” on the horizon, nursing-home living has been on the decline for the past two decades and the alternatives have experienced growth. The Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University (JCHS) reports that the number of Americans over the age of 80 is expected to double from 6 million to 12 million over the next two decades. They also predict that by 2035, one in three U.S. homeowners will be over the age of 65. Research shows that most baby boomers would prefer a lifestyle that does not include renting or nursing homes. Some experts believe age-restricted housing developments may experience growth in the near future. Technology is also expected to be a game-changer when it comes to senior housing and assisted living for the baby-boom generation — because of a desire for more freedom and flexibility, most people of that generation are used to having instant access to information and resources. As a result of our society becoming more health conscious, it is predicted that baby boomers will live longer than previous generations. Therefore, as this generation ages they may find themselves forced to deal with financial challenges tied to a longer lifespan. The JCHS estimates 17.1 million older adults will experience some type of financial strain stemming from factors like shortfalls in Medicare and Social Security.
“Baby boomers are looking for low-maintenance housing developments that allow them to enjoy a more carefree and active lifestyle,” says Dean Weissman, Owner/Broker with The Platinum Group, Realtors. “But this comes at a cost.” In a time when bigger is not necessarily better, the future of senior housing design will vary. As builders and developers look for ways to stand out among senior housing options, creative alternatives will be crucial. “‘Lock-and-leave’-type patio homes with true one-level living and no stair entries will be highly sought after in the not-too-distant future,” says Weissman. Some of the hottest housing community trends are aimed at people aged 55 and up. Unlike previous generations of aging Americans, baby boomers are not interested in settling into rocking chairs to celebrate their “golden years” in a sedentary lifestyle. As nearly 75 million baby boomers (defined as being born between 1946 and 1964) move into their retirement phase — the largest generation ever to do so — developers and builders are expecting big opportunities. Active-adult communities are cropping up across the country, and many new developments are raising the bar with regard to bigger and better amenities. Explore the variety of options located throughout the Pikes Peak region for active-adult communities with a Platinum professional. another sliding glass door opens into a remarkably large, and seemingly neverending walk-in closet. Moving on down to the basement level, the theater room is sure to make any movie buff’s celluloid dreams come true, complete with comfy theater seats, a wide movie screen, projector, built-in speakers, and all audio equipment included. Behind the viewing area is an upscale beverage bar with built-in cabinetry, wine rack, refrigerator, dishwasher and counter space with quartz countertop to keep yourself and your fellow moviegoers sustained with snacks and drinks. Just down the hall from the theater is a powder room that extends the theater theme, with a tiled floor, glass-tiled accent wall, and a shelf vanity with vessel sink. As you move a few steps down the hall from there, you see a large exercise room, complete with a mirrored wall and an adjoining sauna that will allow you and your guests to get your workouts in. Last but certainly not least, you arrive at the deluxe guest suite — a generously large bedroom with a walkout and private entrance/exit to the front of the home. It’s the perfect space to lodge distinguished guests, or as a suite to house an elderly parent. The adjoining private bath features
a dual vanity and an amazing tub/shower that’s designed like a swimming pool; it’s fully tiled, with steps that descend down into the basin. It’s truly unique, as it can be used as a shower or filled with water to become a walk-down wading pool. Located just blocks from the legendary 5-Star Broadmoor Hotel (which is currently celebrating 100 years of hosting U.S. Presidents, celebrities, and other international dignitaries), this home will most assuredly give you and your guests the 5-star treatment. Every time you stop to admire its beauty, you’ll be reminded of why you invested in it. Every time your guests marvel at its features, you’ll know the purchase was worth it. It’s a toast to you and your achievements — a truly private playground beyond your wildest dreams. If unmatched elegance, luxury, and glamour are what you’re searching for, look no further. How to identify your job strengths to make a career change Do you feel stuck in a job that makes you unhappy? ‘The Art of Living Dangerously’ author Jennifer Murphy says the first step to determining your perfect job match is knowing what makes you tick. BY ANNE FISHER, MONSTER CONTRIBUTOR
Ever had a job — maybe even your current one — where you felt like a square peg trying to squeeze yourself into a round hole? Jennifer Murphy has been there. After a decade as an Army officer, Murphy earned an MBA and snagged a series of plum senior management positions at huge global corporations. You know, the type of jobs everyone would be happy to have … right? Unfortunately, job satisfaction isn’t onesize-fits-all. And in Murphy’s case, these highlevel, dream-worthy jobs made her absolutely miserable. “I felt trapped,” she recalls. “I had created a lifestyle for myself that demanded a big salary, so I felt I couldn’t step off the treadmill, even though I didn’t want to be there.” Her book, “The Art of Living Dangerously: The Rebels’ Guide to Thriving in a World that Expects You to Conform,” explains how she discovered her true calling and made a career change — and how you can, too. Since starting her coaching firm, No Limits Life Empowerment Institute, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2012, Murphy has counseled hundreds of people who are unhappy in their careers because they aren’t using their talents to do work that challenges and excites them. “When you don’t like your job, you then tend to think about how much you don’t like it everywhere else you go,” she writes. Not only is this highly stressful and hard on your health, but “your friends don’t want to hang [with you] because all you do is complain about your boss or co-workers, and you can’t relax enough to enjoy your personal time.” Monster recently spoke with Murphy about identifying your strengths and using them to
your strengths, do some strategic, big-picture thinking, and ask yourself: What kind of life would I want if I could start over tomorrow? What kinds of experiences do I want, and what kind of people would I surround myself with? What would I like to create and be remembered for? Get really clear on that, or you could find yourself taking a job you’ll like even less than your current one. Then, it’s OK to start small! If you are looking at taking a pay cut, at least in the short run, figure out how much money you really absolutely need. When I left my last big corporate job, my then-husband and I started with small cutbacks in spending, like downgrading our cable TV plan and driving less. Start small, but start tomorrow — don’t put it off. By the same token, you don’t need to make a big dramatic leap right away. Try “shadowing” someone for a day or two who has the kind of job you think you want. You may love it even more than you thought — or you may discover you just liked the idea of it, rather than the reality.
Q. What specific advice do you give your coaching clients who are job hunting? bolster your search for meaningful work.
Q. Why is it so important to know what our strengths are? A. It’s the difference between thriving and just
surviving. Tapping into what you’re good at makes you happy to go to work every morning. If one of your biggest strengths is connecting with other people, for instance, a job that isolates you in a corner is not a situation where you’ll do your best work. Yet, so many people find themselves settling, as I did, for a role that’s just not right for them. I recommend using the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center’s
strengths-assessment tool (called the VIA Survey of Character Strengths), which anyone can take online for free. It ranks 24 strengths we all possess, in varying degrees, and tells you which ones are “most present” and “least present” in you. You can use that information, along with feedback from bosses and colleagues who know you well, to pinpoint the kind of work that’ll make you thrive.
A. The most successful job hunters approach
clients are in that boat, too. First, once you know
the whole search as a learning experience. After each interview, ask for candid feedback from the interviewer, and write down what you learn from that—especially if you don’t get a job offer. What can you do differently next time? What do you just need to let go of? Don’t forget to make a note of what you did well and what went right, too. Job hunting is hard on the ego, particularly if you’re moving beyond your previous experience and your comfort zone into something different. In doing that, you’ve put yourself out there. You’ve allowed yourself to be vulnerable, and that’s not easy — so give yourself the credit you deserve.
Stay in the know. Keeping your personal brand fresh, current, and relevant is especially important for older workers since one of the potential hesitations a prospective employer may have is that you’re not “up-to-date” on the latest trends, says Joseph Liu, career consultant and host of the Career Relaunch podcast. To stay informed, he recommends subscribing to relevant industry newsletters and podcasts to learn about trends, leaders, and happenings, and attending conferences to hear the latest thinking on hot topics in your field. Unplug from your old tech ways. “I think technology bias is valid in some cases, so it is important that as people go through their career they are continually learning the latest technologies,” says Arnold. Do what you can to demonstrate that continual learning and self-improvement are part of your core values by taking training courses and embracing new technologies. Dress the part. Keeping well-groomed and
wearing modern styles can go a long way, says Arnold. “Hire a personal shopper to help you dress, and work with your stylist — or go to a younger one — to keep appropriately current,” he suggests. This is especially important if you’re doing the job interview circuit. Consider an age-friendly career switch. If you’re not having luck finding positions in your field (or keep facing the “overqualified” dead end), consulting work could be the answer. “Consulting is one potential industry where being an older worker could be an asset,” says Liu, “especially because dependability, domain expertise, a wealth of knowledge and skills, and a mature, well-informed outlook can be incredibly useful.” Although you might think of your age as an asset, it’s important to understand that not everyone will. “Companies talk about cultural fit, but it is a mistake to equate age with culture,” says Arnold. “I have met people of all ages who retain their sense of youth and vigor.” And so can you if you keep your skills fresh and embrace change.
Q. What if your perfect job means taking a big pay cut? A. Been there! And so many of my coaching
How old is too old to work? If you’re feeling pressure to throw in the towel, use these tips to stave off retirement and remain relevant to the workforce.
BY DAWN PAPANDREA, MONSTER CONTRIBUTOR
Many companies value the skills that more experienced workers offer. While many people dream of early retirement, there are some who are perfectly content with working well into their golden years. The unemployment rate for workers 55 and over remains steady at 3.2 percent, nearly a full point lower than the national average of all workers. In fact, the American workforce is aging, with 35 percent of the workforce projected to be over 50 years old by 2022. The question is how old is too old to work? While answers may vary by individual since it often depends on a person’s physical health, the nature of the job, and their financial situation, research shows that it’s going to become increasingly common to work past retirement age. In fact, less than half (45 percent) of workers 45+ said they expect to retire at or before age 65, according to an AARP study. When that same question was posed in 2004, the number was 62 percent. For those who plan to stay in the workforce for the long haul, here’s what you need to know.
Is age bias common?
Short answer: Yes, though ageism doesn’t appear to be rampant across the board. However, in certain industries, it’s almost unheard of to see people in their 50s or 60s thriving. Take tech, for example. “Being in Silicon Valley, we face real age discrimination and the work culture is definitely one of youth,” says Dave Arnold, President of Arnold Partners, LLC, an executive recruiting firm. Age bias can certainly hamper older job seekers. “It can come in the form of
employment algorithms that screen out anyone above a certain age, or job advertisements that call for ‘digital natives,’ or that prospective employers think an experienced candidate will cost too much without ever asking,” says Susan Weinstock, AARP Vice President of Financial Resilience Programming. The good news is that many companies have really come to value the skill sets, knowledge, and work ethic that more experienced workers can offer. One study commissioned by AARP called “A Business Case for Workers Age 50+: A Look at the Value of Experience” found that members of the workforce who are 50 and older continue to be the most engaged age cohort. Weinstock also points out that studies reveal older workers to be: • Less resistant to change • Less likely to leave the organization • Less likely to miss work • Innovative and able to keep up with technology
How to embrace your age
Working well into your retirement years is certainly possible, but it does require personal branding effort and sometimes even a little creative career reshaping. Consider this: Nearly 40 percent of workers age 50 and over haven’t updated their resume in the past decade and, for those age 65 and over, the figure jumps to nearly 50 percent, according to a 2017 national AARP survey. In other words, just because you’ve been working for decades doesn’t mean you should take your foot off the gas — not if you want to have career staying power, that is. Keeping your resume updated is just the start. Here are some other strategies to try:
