LOS ANGELES — Homeowners who spend more time talking about renovating their living room than doing anything about it soon will have one less reason to procrastinate. After a decade in storage, TLC’s “Trading Spaces” has returned, hoping to ride the same wave that brought old
favorites “Will & Grace,” “Full House” and “Roseanne” back onto the popculture landscape. Paige Davis, the show’s unsinkable host, said her social media following ballooned by 20 percent the day the reboot was announced. “It really felt like the right moment with this big sweep of nostalgia hitting
the media,” said Nancy Daniels, who left her position as TLC president last month to become chief brand officer at Discovery Channel and Science Channel. “From the moment we announced it, people have been coming out of the woodwork with their favorite episodes and stories.”
The network has fanned the flames by luring back almost all of the show’s favorites, including Ty Pennington, Vern Yip and Genevieve Gorder. “You don’t bring back ‘Friends’ with only half the group,” Gorder said. “When I heard rumors about it, I was scared because if other people weren’t going to
do it, it would lose the power of what it was. The sum of all of us will always be more than any of us on our own.” With so many familiar faces on board — including Carter Oosterhouse, whom TLC is standing behind despite allegations of inappropriate behavior on the set of HGTV’s “Carter Can” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Two neighbors still swap house keys for 48 hours with the mission of turning each other’s most neglected room into a center spread for Architectural Digest. The budget has been doubled to $2,000, which is probably how much Pennington spends annually on hair products. “When we first started the show, we were dumpster divers,” said returnee Frank Bielec. “I mean, we almost got arrested taking down people’s fences and stuff. With $2,000, at least we can get a good lawyer if we need one.” In the two-hour premiere, which incorporated a reunion special, decorators Doug Wilson and Hildi Santo-Tomas spend more time rebuilding their prima donna images than picking up a paintbrush. The biggest question looming over the first episode is whether a couple will accept Wilson’s concept for burlap wallpaper — or end up stuffed into a burlap bag. “If you’re the average homeowner, it can become incredibly overwhelming to figure out how to make the most out of your money,” Yip said. “It’s
part of our job to show people how to embrace everything that’s at their fingertips right now.” “Spaces” was a hit by basic-cable standards, but it never posted the numbers enjoyed by the network shows that have been resuscitated recently. At its 2003 peak, a “Spaces” special could draw 9 million, a little more than half the number tuning in that season to “Will & Grace.” But the show, based on the British hit “Changing Rooms,” unexpectedly drew youngsters, especially girls ages 6 to 17. In 2003, during the show’s only Twin Cities taping, three preteen girls staked out the set, giving carpenter Amy Wynn Pastor a Domino’s Pizza coupon and passing around pillows for the cast to sign. The show launched five spinoffs and dozens of copycats, from TLC’s “The Adam Carolla Project” to DIY’s “Yard Crashers.” Nate Berkus, who will make a guest appearance on an upcoming episode, has his own inspired hit in “Nate and Jeremiah by Design,” which will kick off its second season immediately following the “Spaces” premiere Saturday. “I was always in awe when people approached me at airports,” said original cast member Laurie Smith.
“Half of them were men, husbands, coming up and going, ‘Hey, I watch a home design show. Let me show you a quick picture of our kitchen.’ That was really thrilling for someone who went to school for interior design and has a passion for it, to feel like we were educating on some level.” But the show’s success may also have contributed to its downfall. Some of its most popular personalities, including Gorder, Pennington and Yip, left to launch their own shows. TLC also started monkeying with its image, putting the emphasis on tabloid TV titles like “Little People, Big World” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” By the time “Trading Spaces” was canceled in 2008, viewership was less than 2 million a week. But as the success of TLC’s more tawdry shows has waned, executives believe they can benefit by relying on old friends rather than chasing new ones. “It feels like a particularly poignant time in our history where a lot of people are looking for something familiar,” Yip said. “A lot of people are looking for comfort. … It just feels like the right time.” Especially if you have an open mind about burlap walls.

Recent development in Colorado Springs and its impact on the market SPONSORED FEATURE
For the past year, we have been excited to see multiple indicators of growth in the Colorado Springs area. After years of very little change in the downtown area, there are numerous large development projects in progress. Construction has begun on the U.S. Olympic Museum, as well as several new hotels. Denver restaurants ViewHouse, Anthony’s Pizza & Pasta, and Denver Biscuit Company have all planned expansions into Colorado Springs. Reasons cited for the growth southward include friendlier development regulations, lower employee overhead
costs and its geographical proximity to some of the best outdoor recreation Colorado has to offer. In addition to the new commercial growth in Colorado Springs, the downtown area is seeing a significant increase in residential properties, as new multi-unit apartment projects are currently under construction in the area. The 333 ECO apartment building, located in central downtown at the intersection of Colorado and Wahsatch Avenues will have 171 units, and is aiming for completion this summer. To the west, another 184-unit
apartment project is scheduled for completion next year at South Cascade Ave. and Rio Grande St. While residential development in recent years has mainly been confined to the northern and eastern parts of the city, and the Fountain to the south, it’s exciting to see such a robust level of investment in the heart of our city. The pace of growth in the Colorado Springs area has not gone unnoticed. Statistics show that between 2015 and 2016, El Paso County experienced the largest growth of all Colorado counties, outpacing even Denver County.
It appears that the millennial generation especially has come to appreciate all that Colorado Springs has to offer. Between 2010 and 2015, our millennial population grew by more than 14 percent — a larger percentage than in any other city in the U.S. As a result, investors from all over the country are focusing their attention on our community. There have recently been several multi-million dollar investments in existing commercial and residential properties. One of those — The Vue 21 apartments, a 332-unit complex located east of Powers and Union Boulevards
— was recently purchased by an Ohio investor for $77.6 million, a 43 percent increase over the 2013 purchase price of $54 million. The residential real estate market also continues to grow at a record pace, with the average home price for March 2018 reaching a record high of more than $340,000. WASHINGTON — The S&P CoreLogic CaseShiller national home price index released Tuesday jumped 6.3 percent in February from a year earlier, matching December’s increase. That jump was the largest in nearly three years. Steady job gains and rising numbers of millennials moving out on their own has intensified the competition for homes. February’s price gain far outpaces average increases in wages or inflation. Americans are reluctant to sell their homes as mortgage rates rise, preferring to renovate instead. Others are holding onto their homes because they
see few other options available. That’s kept supply tight: The number of homes for sale fell 7.2 percent in March from a year earlier to just 1.67 million. Sales of existing homes ticked up in March but actually declined slightly from a year earlier as the housing shortage constrained sales. Homebuyers are getting increasingly aggressive, snapping up homes an average of 30 days after they are listed in March, down from 34 days a year earlier. “Competition is fierce, offer windows are short and tensions will inevitably run high for many buyers as the spring shopping season unfolds,” Svenja Gudell, chief
economist at real estate data website Zillow, said. There are signs that the supply crunch could ease later this year, as listings have picked up in recent months, only to be quickly sold. And developers are breaking ground on more homes, lifting single-family home construction 5.2 percent in March compared with a year earlier. Seattle, Las Vegas and San Francisco remain the nation’s top real estate hot spots, with home prices jumping 12.7 percent in Seattle, 11.6 percent in Las Vegas and 10.1 percent in San Francisco. Strong job gains in some cities, which hint at
an influx of new residents, are pushing up home prices, Standard & Poor’s said. Seattle reported the biggest increase in employment, and had the largest home price gain. Chicago ranked 19th out of the 20 cities tracked in both home price increases and employment. Cleveland came in at 18th place in home prices and 20th in employment. But in San Francisco and Los Angeles, home prices are rising much faster than their job gains would suggest, a sign that regulatory limits on homebuilding and limited land availability are pushing prices even higher.
